New York Islanders at New York Rangers (-170, 5.5)
The New York Islanders’ magic number to clinch the playoffs is one. This means they need a single point to play meaningful hockey this Spring. This afternoon, the Islanders take on their rival, the New York Rangers, in a rematch from Tuesday night. The Islanders got the best of the Rangers this week as they skated to a 4-2 win at UBS Arena, but today should have a much different feel to it.
This is now a very important game for the Rangers, who are battling for first place in the Metropolitan Division and the entire NHL. This game feels like it will be a goaltending battle between Ilya Sorokin and Igor Shesterkin. Even though the head coaches haven’t named an official starter when writing this, that is the expected matchup.
Ilya Sorokin is getting the start today for the first time in quite a bit. This will be his first start since April 4th, so this is a very important game for him personally. In his last three starts, Sorokin is 2-1-0 with a 2.03 goals against average and a .920 save percentage, but Semyon Varlamov has been their guy in the blue paint as of late.
This is going to be a playoff game. I expect both teams to play very tight defensively, doing their best to not give up an inch to their opponent. This game should have a great buzz right from the opening puck drop, but both groups will lock it down defensively.
NHL Best Bet: Under 1.5 goals in the first period -110

The latest Kraken vs Stars odds have the Stars as -250 favorite on the moneyline, while the over/under is set at 6 total goals. There have been three or fewer total goals scored in two of the past three meetings between these two teams.
There have been five or fewer total goals scored in each of Seattle's past three games, a trend that exists due to multiple factors. First, goaltender Philipp Grubauer has found his groove.
Grubauer has allowed two or fewer goals in four of his past five starts, posting a 4-1 record with a .924 SV% and 2.01 GAA over that stretch. This success could continue against Dallas, a team he boasts a career .919 SV% against.
It also helps Grubauer's cause that he plays behind one of the best blue lines in hockey. This season, the Kraken rank second in the league in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60).
Therefore, it is not shocking that they rank in the top 10 of the league in both goals allowed per game and shots on goal allowed per game. However, the same dominance is not expected out of the offensive zone.
Entering this matchup, Seattle ranks in the bottom half of the league in goals scored per game, shots on goal per game, power play percentage and shooting percentage.
Those offensive struggles are likely to continue against Dallas, a team that ranks in the top 10 in goals allowed per game, shots on goal allowed per game, penalty kill percentage and penalty minutes taken per game.
The Stars prevent high danger scoring chances at an equally elite level, ranking third in xGA/60. Backing up this elite defensive team is goaltender Jake Oettinger, who has played tremendously over the past month.
Oettinger is 8-1 over his past nine starts with a commanding .937 SV% and 1.67 GAA. One of those starts came against Seattle, a game in which Dallas won 3-0.
Oettinger's success is likely to continue against the Kraken, a team he is 5-1-1 against in his career with a .910 SV% and 2.43 GAA. This game features two goaltenders in great form that are backed behind two tremendous blue lines.
Yes, Dallas' offense is also elite, but that can be offset by Seattle's underwhelming forward play.
