Preview: Brewers (27-39) at Reds (41-27)
Game: 2
Venue: Great American Ball Park
Date: June 15, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

Although the Milwaukee Brewers are thriving at the plate during Ryan Braun's absence, they couldn't end their struggles against the Cincinnati Reds last time out.

With Braun now on the disabled list, the Brewers will try to snap a five-game skid to their NL Central rivals and avoid losing for a 10th time in 11 games in Cincinnati on Saturday.

Milwaukee (27-39) is batting .305 and has scored 41 runs while winning five of seven games. Braun was out with a sore right thumb in the last four of those contests, and the slugger was placed on the DL after Friday's series opener.

"This is a move we tried to avoid," manager Ron Roenicke said. "After talking to him, I think this is the right way to go."

The Brewers had 12 hits Friday but suffered a 4-3 loss in 10 innings. Jay Bruce's game-ending home run gave the Reds their fourth win in five contests.

"I told somebody earlier it never gets old," said Bruce, who is tied for the team lead with 11 homers. "I hit homers, but walkoffs are completely different. They're a little sweeter, especially this one because of (Thursday's 6-5 loss in 14 innings to the Chicago Cubs)."

Homer Bailey (4-4, 3.47 ERA) will try to help Cincinnati (41-27) keep rolling by building on one of his best starts of the season. He gave up one unearned run over eight innings and struck out eight in a 6-2 win over the Cubs on Monday.

"I just wanted to be aggressive and try to be very efficient," Bailey said.

Bailey is 3-0 with a 1.70 ERA in his last five games against NL opponents but is 1-5 with a 5.81 ERA in 11 career starts versus Milwaukee. The right-hander, though, gave up one run over eight innings and struck out 10 in his most recent matchup, a 3-1 home win July 20.

Like his counterpart for Saturday, Yovani Gallardo (5-6, 4.74) will also seek to build on a superb outing. He tossed eight scoreless innings in a 6-1 victory in Miami on Monday after going 1-5 with a 6.21 ERA in his previous seven starts.

The veteran struck out four to became the third Brewers pitcher to strike out 1,000 batters, joining Teddy Higuera and Ben Sheets.

"Getting 1,000 strikeouts, it's a big number," Gallardo said. "It's definitely a lot of work. It's a lot of pitches thrown. It's one of the goals and hopefully keep moving forward to get to the next one."

Gallardo struggled in his lone start of the season against the Reds, allowing three runs, five hits and five walks in four innings of a 4-3 road loss on May 10. He has a 5.17 ERA in losing his last three starts at Great American Ball Park.

Bruce, hitting .387 in his last seven games, is batting .419 (13 for 31) with two home runs versus Gallardo. That's the second-highest average of the 15 hitters who have faced the right-hander 30 or more times.

Rickie Weeks has the best average against Bailey of any hitter who has faced him at least 20 times, going 11 for 24 (.458) with a pair of homers.

Preview: Phillies (33-35) at Rockies (35-33)
Game: 2
Venue: Coors Field
Date: June 15, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

A minor injury forced Tyler Chatwood to miss a start.

The Colorado Rockies are hoping the right-hander doesn't miss a beat when he returns to their rotation Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Following a rough first start for Colorado (35-33), Chatwood (3-1, 2.14 ERA) is 3-1 with a 1.30 ERA, while racking up 27 strikeouts against just seven walks. He was having another solid outing in Cincinnati on June 3, before feeling pain in his triceps on a pitch to Shin-Soo Choo in the third inning. The pain bothered him whenever he threw a fastball, forcing him to leave after four innings of one-run ball in a 3-0 loss.

An MRI showed no serious problem, however, allowing the Rockies to plan for a quick return.

"Very, very good news on Chat,' manager Walt Weiss said on June 5. "They just saw a little inflammation in there, nothing major.'

He'll face a Philadelphia offense that finally broke through in Friday's series opener, pounding out 13 hits and rallying for an 8-7 victory. The Phillies (33-35), who had plated 21 runs in the first seven contests of a 10-game road trip, trailed 7-2 after five innings before mounting their biggest comeback of the season.

"This is a park where the ball flies,' said Freddy Galvis, who hit a pair of 2-run triples and scored the go-ahead run on Humberto Quintero's single in the seventh inning. "You've just got to keep hitting and we got 'em.'

Jonathan Pettibone (3-2, 3.70) can only hope such abundance carries into his start. The right-hander has received just five runs of support over his last five starts, and not surprisingly, hasn't won since May 14.

In his first career start at Coors Field, hardly a pitcher-friendly venue, Pettibone will look to put his road woes behind him. He has a 5.32 ERA in four starts away from Philadelphia.

Pettibone struggled his last time out, surrendering a season-high six runs in a 9-1 loss at Milwaukee on Sunday. He gave up just four hits but was undone by two walks and two hit batsmen.

Pettibone will face an explosive Colorado offense that erupted for double-digit hits for the sixth time in nine games Friday. The Rockies lead the majors with 48 home runs at home and are tied for second with their .282 batting average.

Josh Rutledge and Carlos Gonzalez each homered Friday for Colorado, which fell to 24-3 when plating at least six runs.

For Philadelphia, center fielder Ben Revere dropped off his torrid pace. After recording seven hits in his final 10 at_bats in Minneapolis, he went 1 for 5 Friday.

First baseman Ryan Howard went 0 for 3 with two walks, and still has just one home run with 40 strikeouts in 109 at_bats since May 8.

Galvis, who arrived in Denver mired in a 1-for-20 slump, spoke for an entire lineup after lifting the Phillies to consecutive wins following a season-high five-game skid.

"Hopefully, I'll keep swinging good and help the team," Galvis said. "Sometimes, that's the kind of game you need to get back on track.'

Preview: Royals (32-33) at Rays (35-32)
Game: 3
Venue: Tropicana Field
Date: June 15, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

Strong pitching continues to pace the Kansas City Royals during their recent surge.

Jeremy Guthrie looks to continue that success on the mound and help the visiting Royals to a fourth straight victory Saturday against the struggling Tampa Bay Rays.

Luis Mendoza gave up two runs with six hits and three Kansas City (32-33) relievers pitched three hitless innings in Friday's 7-2 win at Tampa Bay. The Royals, winners of nine of 10, have held opponents to three runs or fewer in all 13 games this month, going 10-3.

Kansas City's pitching staff has surrendered 20 earned runs in June and remains a big reason the club is within a game of reaching .500 for the first time since it was 21-21 on May 21.

"You can't say enough good things about what our pitching staff's done,' said Kansas City slugger Billy Butler, who is 8 for 17 with five RBIs against the Rays this season. "It's been really fun lately to have them meshing together with the offense and defense."

The Royals own a 34-13 run advantage while going 4-0 this season against the Rays (35-32), who have dropped five of six.

Guthrie (7-3, 3.60 ERA), who won eight games for Colorado and Kansas City in 2012, is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in three starts since he posted a 7.91 ERA while losing his previous three. The right-hander gave up a two-run homer to Miguel Cabrera over 6 1-3 innings of a 3-2 win over Detroit on Monday.

Guthrie is 6-10 with a 4.05 ERA in 19 starts against the Rays, but has not faced them since 2011 with Baltimore.

After recording three hits, including a three-run homer in Kansas City's 10-1 win over Tampa Bay on Thursday, Ex-Ray Elliot Johnson had two more hits with an RBI on Friday.

Traded by the Rays to the Royals in February, the light-hitting infielder is 8 for 15 (.533) with both of his home runs and five of his eight RBIs in four games against his former team this season.

Tampa Bay has totaled four runs and 18 hits during its current three-game skid that followed a four-game stretch where it averaged 7.8 runs and 13.0 hits.

The Rays rotation has allowed 33 runs in 31 innings over the last six games.

"We can talk about our offense all we want, but until we start pitching like we can it's going to be tough to get on a nice roll again,' manager Joe Maddon said.

Tampa Bay's Alex Cobb (6-2, 2.95) takes the mound looking for a more complete outing. He allowed six first-inning runs before he settled down and gave up seven hits and walked three over a season-low four frames of a 10-8, 14-inning loss to Boston on Monday.

The right-hander gave up four runs and 16 hits in 28 2-3 innings to go 2-0 over his previous four starts.

Cobb, who yielded four runs and 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings of an 8-2 loss at Kansas City on April 30, is 1-2 with a 5.23 ERA against the Royals.

Johnson is 2 for 3 against Cobb.

Despite the Rays offensive struggles, Matt Joyce is batting .417 (10 for 24) with three homers and four RBIs in six games. He's hit .414 with four homers and five RBIs in his last seven versus Kansas City.

Preview: Nationals (33-33) at Indians (33-33)
Game: 2
Venue: Progressive Field
Date: June 15, 2013 7:15 PM EDT

Though he may not attract as much attention as some of the game's other top pitchers, Jordan Zimmermann has been as consistent as they come.

Zimmermann tries to build on another stellar outing Saturday night as the visiting Washington Nationals face the Cleveland Indians, who appear to be back on track.

Among the major league leaders in wins and ERA, Zimmermann (9-3, 2.00 ERA) has allowed two runs or fewer in all but two of 13 starts. The right-hander has gone at least seven innings in 10 of those outings and is holding opponents to a .205 average.

"It means I'm pitching pretty well, I'm going deep in the ballgame," he told MLB's official website. "I'm giving the team a chance."

Zimmermann had everything working Sunday in a 7-0 win over Minnesota, striking out a season high-tying eight over seven innings of two-hit ball. He showed up wearing a heating pad due to a stiff neck but didn't appear to be hindered at all.

"I'm hoping he wears that neck brace every time he goes out," manager Davey Johnson said. "That was a heck of a game."

While Zimmermann is 6-0 with a 1.06 ERA at home, he was tagged for a season-worst seven runs and a career-high 10 hits over six-plus innings during his last road start, a 9-6 loss to Baltimore on May 29.

Zimmermann has never faced Cleveland (33-33), but he's had his way with Drew Stubbs (0 for 10) and Michael Bourn (1 for 9). Mark Reynolds is 3 for 7 with a homer in their matchups, but he enters Saturday in a 2-for-23 slump and homerless in 13 straight games.

The Indians had dropped eight straight and 16 of 20 before winning their last three while allowing five runs. Cleveland held Washington (33-33) to a season-low two hits before Jason Kipnis drove in Stubbs with a fielder's choice in the ninth inning of Friday's 2-1 win.

"Losing eight or nine in a row is not the character of this team," said Stubbs, who just beat first baseman Adam LaRoche's throw home. "We just needed a few breaks to go our way to turn things around."

LaRoche grounded out with runners on second and third to end the third inning for the Nationals, who went 0 for 3 with men in scoring position after batting .313 in those situations while winning four of five.

"We had the right guys up with runners in scoring position with less than two outs," Johnson said. "Didn't put the ball in play. We've got to be better than that."

Hitting a major league-worst .211 on the road, Washington is down to .192 during its current 4-10 stretch in opposing ballparks. Away from home, Denard Span is 1 for 24 in six games this month while Jayson Werth is 4 for his last 37 and LaRoche 7 for his last 41.

The Nationals will try to break out against Scott Kazmir (3-4, 5.33), who has allowed at least four runs in four of his last six starts. The left-hander surrendered four and eight hits over six-plus innings Monday in a 6-3 loss at Texas.

"I just feel bad we couldn't get (Kazmir) any more runs," Reynolds said. "He deserves a lot better."

Kazmir could benefit from getting back home, where he's gone 3-0 with a 3.68 ERA while striking out 24 and walking four over four starts spanning 22 innings.

Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki is 2 for 22 against Kazmir, who will be making his first appearance versus Washington.

Preview: Tigers (37-28) at Twins (29-35)
Game: 2
Venue: Target Field
Date: June 15, 2013 7:15 PM EDT

With a dominant effort, Anibal Sanchez came within two outs of history the last time he faced the Minnesota Twins.

Sanchez - having skipped his last start - looks to shut down Minnesota again Saturday night at Target Field as the Detroit Tigers seek their eighth win in 11 games.

Sanchez's bid to become the fourth active pitcher with multiple no-hitters was foiled on May 24 by Joe Mauer's one-out single in the top of the ninth. That proved to be the only hit against Sanchez, who finished with 12 strikeouts while going the distance in Detroit's 6-0 win.

"It's not that I go to the mound and want to do something special," Sanchez said after his fourth one-hitter. "It's just that I want to go nine innings, go deeper, get a good command, get a good game."

It was the continuation of some recent success versus the Twins, whom he's 1-1 with a 1.37 ERA against over his last four starts. They tagged him for five runs and 12 hits over 5 1-3 innings the first time they saw him in a 9-3 Minnesota win Aug. 13.

Sanchez (6-5, 2.65 ERA) was slated to face Cleveland on Sunday, but was scratched due to tightness in the back of his right shoulder. He said he experienced a similar issue last year in spring training and was OK after sitting out one start.

"I'm not worried. I just need to take care of it," Sanchez told the team's official website. "It's early. We're in June right now, so we have a lot more starts to go. We're working with our body, and when something happens, we need to take care of it."

The Twins (29-35) were dominated by another Tigers pitcher in Detroit's 4-0 win Friday, as Rick Porcello limited them to three hits and no walks over seven innings - the 19th quality start by a Tigers pitcher over the team's last 20 games.

Meanwhile, Minnesota has scored just 24 runs over the last 10 games while going 15 for 92 (.163) with runners in scoring position. Twins hitters were 0 for 6 in such situations Friday.

Twins starter Samuel Deduno (2-1, 3.47) was hit hard by Detroit (37-28) in his season debut May 24, surrendering six runs and nine hits over 5 1-3 innings in a 6-0 defeat. He rebounded to win his next two starts while giving up one run in 13 innings, then took a step back at Washington Sunday with an inefficient five innings that saw him allow three runs, six hits and three walks.

"Today I didn't feel I had my best stuff," Deduno told the team's official website. "I couldn't throw first-pitch strikes. That was the problem."

Austin Jackson was 0 for 3 Friday but walked and scored a run in his first game since May 11 as he had been out with a strained right hamstring. The center fielder had played three times in a rehab assignment for Triple-A Toledo, where the Tigers optioned Avisail Garcia in a corresponding move prior to Friday's game.

Mauer is 5 for 12 off of Sanchez while Josh Willingham and Justin Morneau are a combined 5 for 30.

Andy Dirks is 6 for 10 against Deduno with two doubles.

Preview: Yankees (37-30) at Angels (29-38)
Game: 2
Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Date: June 15, 2013 7:15 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Angels are showing signs of regaining their hitting stroke but could have a difficult time keeping their bats going if David Phelps can continue his recent resurgence.

Phelps will try to deliver another superb outing while helping the New York Yankees avoid a season high-tying fifth straight loss Saturday night.

Los Angeles (29-38) has produced 14 runs and 25 hits in its second set of back-to-back victories since the end of an eight-game win streak May 27. The Angels had 13 hits - their most in 16 games - in Friday's series-opening 5-2 victory over the Yankees (37-30).

Albert Pujols registered his second three-hit effort in as many games and four other players contributed two or more hits.

"We need to keep going tomorrow," first baseman Mark Trumbo, who also had three hits and drove in a run. "We did a lot of things right. ... We got a nice win and that's what we need."

The Angels will try to keep hitting when they face Phelps (4-3, 3.90 ERA), who has bounced back splendidly from the worst start of his career. The right-hander is 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA in two outings since he failed to make it out of the first inning in a loss to the New York Mets on May 29. He's given up a combined four hits while striking out 13.

Phelps allowed one run over six innings and fanned six while helping the Yankees get past Seattle ace Felix Hernandez in a 2-1 win Sunday.

"Regardless of who I'm pitching against, I'm going to go out and try to put up as many zeros as I can," Phelps told the team's website.

Phelps will make his first start against the Angels. He had a 1.23 ERA in two relief appearances against them last season, covering 7 1-3 innings

The Yankees, meanwhile, will try to help him by snapping out of their extended funk at the plate. The Yankees are batting .220 in their last 23 games and .189 during their four consecutive defeats.

They produced six singles in Friday's loss, and placed Kevin Youkilis (back) on the disabled list before the game.

First baseman Mark Teixeira is 3 for 29 in his last seven games, while former Angel Vernon Wells is 4 for 28 during that same span.

"Keep fighting through it. That's all you can do," manager Joe Girardi said. "Every team is going to go through it. We're not immune to it, and we've got to find a way to get out of it."

Tommy Hanson (3-2, 4.12) will try to be the latest to stifle Yankees hitters while earning his second win since returning from the restricted list. The right-hander, who had been dealing with family issues, gave up two runs over five innings last Saturday in a 9-5 victory in Boston despite allowing seven hits and four walks.

"Tommy was on the edge it seemed like the whole game - a lot of baserunners and it's a tough lineup to give up a lot of opportunities," manager Mike Scioscia said. "But when he needed to make pitches, he did and was grinding it out for five innings."

Hanson is 2-0 with a 3.48 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees. The most recent was a 10-5 win for Atlanta on June 20.

Preview: Mariners (30-38) at Athletics (41-28)
Game: 2
Venue: O.co Coliseum
Date: June 15, 2013 7:15 PM EDT

With their longest home winning streak in 11 years in the past, the Oakland Athletics face a stiff challenge trying to bounce back against the Seattle Mariners' Felix Hernandez.

The star right-hander looks to continues his recent success overall and in Oakland on Saturday.

A day after posting an 18-inning, 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees, Oakland (41-28) seemed to lack energy as its 11-game home winning streak ended with Friday's 3-2 loss to Seattle.

Mike Zunino homered in his second career game and Joe Saunders allowed a run and five hits over seven innings for the Mariners (30-38), who improved to 5-3 against the A's this season.

"I felt no difference,' Oakland manager Bob Melvin said about any possible fatigue from Thursday's marathon contest. "(Joe) Saunders pitched well. It was Zunino's home run.'

The AL West-leading A's have lost six times in 27 games, but now must find a way to get the best of a pitcher that's enjoyed taking the mound in Oakland during his stellar career.

Hernandez (7-4, 2.49 ERA) is 7-2 with a 2.82 ERA in 15 starts at the Coliseum, and hasn't lost there in 10 starts. He allowed three hits and struck out eight in 7 2-3 innings of a 2-0 season-opening victory at Oakland on April 1, the fourth time in five starts there he yielded one run or less.

"He's a tremendous pitcher, obviously, but you go out there and try to throw up zeros because his track record says he's going to do it, too,' said currently disabled Oakland pitcher Brett Anderson, who took the loss in that contest.

Hernandez gave up 11 runs and 19 hits in 10 2-3 innings to lose consecutive starts from May 19-25, but has since yielded six and 14 hits over 22 1-3 innings while going 2-0 in three outings. He allowed a run, five hits and struck out seven in seven innings of a 2-1 home loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday.

He's 5-2 with a 1.96 ERA in eight road outings in 2013.

Three of Oakland's 11 home losses have come to Seattle.

Called up Tuesday, Zunino is 2 for 7 and happy to contribute.

"I'm just happy (his first homer) could come at a time like that to help the team out," he said. "The bigger part was getting the W. That was my first one, too.'

Mariners rookie second baseman Nick Franklin added two hits and is 6 for 11 in the last three games.

Scheduled A's starter A.J. Griffin (5-5, 3.78) is 0-2 in his last three starts overall, but has a 2.12 ERA in winning his three career starts against the Mariners. The right-hander allowed two runs in six innings of an 8-2 win over Seattle on April 4.

Set to make his first home start since May 19, Griffin has allowed four runs in three of his last four starts, including Sunday over 7 1-3 innings of a 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Oakland's Chris Young went 3 for 3 with a home run Friday. Young is hitting .184 this season, but is 5 for 9 with two doubles and two homers in three games versus Seattle.

The A's hope to have third baseman Josh Donaldson in the lineup after he was rested Friday while dealing with a leg strain. He's hitting .310 overall, but is 1 for 17 with six strikeouts in his last four contests.

Preview: White Sox (28-36) at Astros (24-44)
Game: 2
Venue: Minute Maid Park
Date: June 15, 2013 7:15 PM EDT

John Danks said he wanted to be a "stopper" after his last start.

The Chicago White Sox hope he's finally going in the right direction.

The left-hander looks to build off his first victory in a year as he takes on the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park on Saturday night.

Danks (1-2, 4.13 ERA) flew through his last start, retiring the last 21 hitters he faced to finish with eight innings of one-run ball Saturday. He surrendered three hits in a 4-1 win over Oakland, picking up his first victory since May 19, 2012.

"I want to be a stopper," Danks said. "I want to be a guy that goes out there and can be depended on to give us as good a chance to win as anybody."

For a long time, the White Sox (28-36) have been unable to depend on Danks as a stopper. The left-hander went so long between wins due largely to a shoulder injury that kept him out for the better part of a year. He's made four starts since returning.

"His velocity is climbing, it looks like, as he goes, but he's definitely pitching with less velocity than he's had when it was years ago," first baseman Paul Konerko said. "But that can be a good thing if he pitches now and learns to do some things that he might have to do. Then if he gets back to where he's going to get to - which I'm sure he will - now you have both weapons."

His only start against Houston (24-44) was a loss in 2007. The only player on the young Astros who has extensive experience against Danks is lefty-hitting Carlos Pena, who is 4 for 17 against him but with two homers and a double. Danks, holding lefties to a .207 average this year, is facing a Houston team averaging 1.9 runs in its last eight games.

He'll also look to take advantage of a venue that has seen a lot of pitchers' duels lately, including Houston's 2-1 victory Friday night. Just 46 runs have been scored in the last seven games played at Minute Maid Park, with the winning team scoring four runs or fewer in five of them.

Lucas Harrell (4-7, 4.52) is very familiar with a lack of offense, receiving 12 runs of support over 11 of his starts. He's won all three outings when getting more than three runs. Houston scored one over his last two outings as Harrell went 0-1 despite giving up two runs - one earned - and seven hits in 14 innings.

He held Kansas City off the scoreboard for seven innings Sunday in a 2-0 loss. Harrell, tied for third in the majors with 40 walks, did not issue one after walking three in the first two innings and threw 33 of his final 48 pitches for strikes.

"I was more aggressive," Harrell said. "I started pounding the zone and using my sinker more to get ahead. And then I threw some really good curveballs."

Harrell, though, has 27 walks in 41 innings at home while posting a 6.15 ERA. The right-hander won his only start against the White Sox, yielding five runs in 7 1-3 innings of an 11-9 road win June 10, 2012.

Adam Dunn homered off Harrell in that matchup and has hit four in his last five games, though he was 0 for 2 with an RBI on Friday.

The White Sox have committed eight errors in their last six games, including three in a loss to Toronto on Tuesday and two by shortstop Alexei Ramirez on Friday which allowed Houston to score its only two runs.

Preview: Diamondbacks (37-30) at Padres (33-34)
Game: 2
Venue: PETCO Park
Date: June 15, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

Superb starting pitching has the San Diego Padres gaining ground on the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks, and on the brink of their longest winning streak of the season.

Giving the ball to Jason Marquis may keep them rolling.

Marquis attempts to extend his longest winning streak in nine years Saturday night against the Diamondbacks.

The Padres (33-34) have won four in a row thanks largely to a 1.71 ERA from the starters, who have each gone at least seven innings in each contest.

That's helped San Diego move within four games of Arizona for the division lead, though it also has San Francisco and Colorado to pass.

Eric Stults provided the latest gem Friday, tossing a two-hitter in a 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks (37-30) in the opener of this three-game series at Petco Park.

"Anytime you start you want to finish the game," Stults said.

Marquis (8-2. 3.59 ERA) hasn't done that this year, but he's won all seven decisions over his last nine starts behind a 3.15 ERA. That includes going 5-0 with a 2.50 ERA in six games at Petco Park.

The 34-year-old right-hander's overall winning streak is his longest since a career-best 11-0 run over 17 starts with St. Louis in 2004.

His outstanding run may be why the Padres opted to move him up a day, bumping Clayton Richard to the series finale.

Marquis battled through his latest outing Monday, allowing two runs and a season high-tying five walks while throwing 108 pitches in 7 2-3 innings of a 7-6 win over Atlanta.

"He weaves his way through a game. It's great," manager Bud Black said.

Marquis did that to beat Arizona on May 3, yielding three runs and four hits while issuing five walks in six innings of a 7-6 win.

Another strong performance may be important because the offense has been held to a .214 average during the four-game win streak. The Padres haven't had a longer one since an eight-game run in August.

Logan Forsythe has been one of the team's few bright spots on offense lately. He's 4 for 12 with a homer and five RBIs in four games after spending the first 2 1/2 months of the season on the disabled list recovering plantar fasciitis.

The second baseman singled home both of San Diego's runs in the sixth inning Friday. Forsythe is 2 for 3 with a homer off Wade Miley, the Diamondbacks' scheduled starter.

Arizona, which has dropped four of six, has been feast or famine at the plate while splitting the first four of a six-game road trip. The offense has 31 hits and 13 runs in those victories compared to six and four, respectively, in the defeats.

This contest will see manager Kirk Gibson return from a one-game suspension for his involvement in Tuesday's brawl with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Gibson is turning to Miley (4-5, 4.89), who is 1-4 with a 7.52 ERA in six career starts against the Padres.

The left-hander lost to them twice last month, surrendering 11 runs and 16 hits in 8 2-3 innings. The most recent of those meetings was a 10-4 loss May 25, when he was tagged for seven runs in a season-low 3 2-3 innings.

That was part of Miley's four-game losing streak, during which he compiled a 9.14 ERA. However, he's since posted two straight quality starts - both Arizona victories - while going 1-0.

Preview: Nationals (34-33) at Indians (33-34)
Game: 3
Venue: Progressive Field
Date: June 16, 2013 1:05 PM EDT

After letting his back heal up over the last two weeks, the Washington Nationals' Stephen Strasburg is ready to return to the mound.

Strasburg tries to win a fifth consecutive interleague start Sunday as the visiting Nationals conclude a three-game set against the Cleveland Indians.

Strasburg (3-5, 2.54 ERA) had gone 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA over a three-start stretch before exiting his last one after two innings due to a strained muscle in his back May 31. The right-hander was placed on the disabled list six days later but is scheduled to come off when first eligible Sunday.

"(The back) feels good. Threw some good pitches, spotted the fastball, do what I need to do and get a move on, throw a bullpen and hopefully be ready to go," he told MLB's official website after throwing a simulated game Tuesday. "I feel the strength has really stayed there, even though I missed a couple starts."

Strasburg was later cleared to return following Thursday's bullpen session at Coors Field.

"He's never satisfied. He didn't have the pinpoint control that he expects out there," manager Davey Johnson said of Strasburg, who isn't expected to be on a strict pitch limit. "I think he attributes it more to the light air. Steve's always a perfectionist."

Strasburg won all four of his interleague starts last year, improving to 5-1 with a 2.13 ERA over seven career meetings against AL opponents. He's allowed one or two earned runs in each of those outings while striking out 66 in 42 1-3 innings.

Strasburg's only appearance versus Cleveland (33-34) came in his second career start June 13, 2010. He overcame a career-worst five walks to allow one run and two hits while striking out eight over 5 1-3 innings in a 9-4 road victory.

After a 2-1 walkoff loss in Friday's series opener, the Nationals (34-33) bounced back in a big way with Saturday's 7-6 win, their fifth in seven games. Washington hit a season high-tying five homers, none bigger than the first of rookie Anthony Rendon's career, a go-ahead shot in the ninth inning.

"I guess it's not a bad one to get on the board with," said Rendon, who finished 3 for 5 with two runs scored. "I don't even know how to explain it."

The former highly-touted prospect went deep two pitches after his foul popup dropped in between Nick Swisher and Jason Kipnis, one of a season-worst three Indians' errors.

"That shouldn't happen to us but it did and it cost us the game," Swisher said. "It was a little miscommunication. It was something we handled already."

Cleveland fell to 5-24 when committing at least two errors since the start of last season, including 0-7 this year. Despite Saturday's loss, the Indians are 17-7 over their last 24 home games.

Cleveland now turns to Corey Kluber (4-4, 4.08), who's gone 2-2 with a 3.09 ERA and 37 strikeouts in his last six starts spanning 35 innings. The right-hander turned in one of his best performances Tuesday, allowing one run and six hits over a career-high eight innings during a 5-2 win at Texas.

"He's getting better right in front of our eyes," manager Terry Francona said. "For him to go out there and kind of shoulder that responsibility, was, (we're) really proud of him."

Mired in an 0-for-18 slump, Denard Span is the only Nationals player with any experience against Kluber, going 2 for 6 with two doubles.

Preview: Cardinals (44-24) at Marlins (20-47)
Game: 3
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: June 16, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

Tyler Lyons hopes to prove the St. Louis Cardinals made the right decision by keeping him aboard following the return of teammate Jake Westbrook.

The rookie left-hander takes the ball for the Cardinals as they look to avoid losing their first series since late April on Sunday against the Miami Marlins.

When Westbrook came off the disabled list Friday, St. Louis (44-24) had to choose between keeping Lyons (2-2, 3.51 ERA) or highly regarded rookie right-hander Michael Wacha in the rotation.

Manager Mike Matheny said he gave the nod to Lyons, 25, because he's three years older and has more professional experience than Wacha, who was optioned Friday to Triple-A Memphis.

"It's nice having that left-hander in the rotation," Matheny said. "It has been nice to watch Tyler do his thing. He has been very efficient and given us a chance when he has been out there. Michael did a great job, too, but right now it's a better fit for Tyler."

Lyons, though, hasn't been as sharp since giving up two runs and six hits over 14 innings while winning his first two starts. He's yielded eight runs and 14 hits over 11 2-3 innings in consecutive losses.

Although Lyons appears to have a good chance to regroup against one of the worst offensive clubs in the major leagues, the improving Marlins (20-47) have hit .293 and scored 43 runs during a 5-3 stretch at Marlins Park.

They've split the first two of this three-game set with St. Louis, which hasn't lost a series since dropping two of three to Pittsburgh from April 26-28.

The Cardinals had been limited to seven runs and 24 hits while losing two of three games before matching a season high with 17 hits in a 13-7 victory Saturday. St. Louis improved to 5-3 on a nine-game road trip.

Carlos Beltran led the attack with three hits - two homers - leaving him with a .369 average and six home runs over a major league-best 14-game hitting streak.

"I feel great," Beltran said. "I've been healthy, and good things are happening for me and the team."

Giancarlo Stanton is finally healthy and also wielding a hot bat for Miami. He's gone 8 for 20 (.400) with two homers, two doubles and seven RBIs in five games since coming off the disabled list.

"This is a good as I've seen him all year," manager Mike Redmond said. "He's going to the plate with a lot of confidence right now, and that's fun to watch."

Teammate Juan Pierre is 4 for 9 in this series and batting .383 during a season-high 11-game hitting streak.

The Marlins, though, could be without Logan Morrison, who has missed the past three games because of tightness in his back.

Scheduled Miami starter Ricky Nolasco (3-7, 3.80) had a 2.17 ERA over his prior four starts before yielding four runs and a season-high 10 hits over 5 1-3 innings in a 6-1 loss to Milwaukee on Monday.

The right-hander has been hurt by the team's lack of scoring, getting seven runs of support over his last eight starts.

Nolasco is 1-4 with a 4.82 ERA in eight career starts versus the Cardinals, though he hasn't allowed an earned run in his past 18 2-3 innings against them.

Beltran is batting .341 with a homer in 41 career at_bats against Nolasco.

Matt Holliday also has ripped Nolasco, going 11 for 24 with two homers and three doubles. David Freese, who went 3 for 4 with a homer Saturday, has five hits in six at_bats in this matchup.
