Best bad weather over/under bets in baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The way the weather has been this month, players around the major leagues don’t quite feel like “The Boys of Summer”. More like the “Sultans of Soak”.

The 2013 MLB season has been plagued by cold, rain and even fog, forcing schedule makers to postpone 31 games so far – the second most cancellations by this point of the season since 2002. The 2011 campaign had 53 games shuffled due to crappy climates, with 32 PPDs as of June 12, according to John Schlegel of MLB.com.

There could be more postponements on tap this month, which has already had its share of delays and cancellations. Weather has been downright terrible in June and another rash of thunderstorms and rain is in the forecast over the next two days.

But rather than run for high ground, baseball bettors can find a way to make money off this stretch of soggy weather. If you’ve been stashing your bankroll away for a rainy day, we have six MLB stadiums that have produced value for totals bettors when the sun doesn’t shine.

Best bad weather over bets

Dodgers Stadium

That Albert Hammond was full of $hit man. The British singer once chimed “It Never Rains in Southern California”, but L.A. has seen its fair share of wet weather this spring. The Dodgers have produced a 13-5 over/under record when the forecast calls for clouds/rain. Their crosstown rivals, the Angels have also leaned toward the over in bad weather, with Angels Stadium boasting an 8-4 over/under when the skies grow dark.

Comerica Park

According to MLB.com, the Tigers have suffered through 24 postponements since 2002 – tied for eighth most in the majors. Detroit hasn’t let the cold spring climate cool off its bats, posting a 14-7 over/under count under a grey sky at Comerica Park. The Tigers are on the road this week but thunderstorms are in the extended forecast for trips to Minnesota and Baltimore.

Citizens Bank Park

The Phillies poor play isn’t the only thing keeping fans away from Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia has had 28 postponed games since 2002 – sixth most – and has been chilled by fall-like weather to kick off the summer. The Phillies are 14-8 over/under at home when rain clouds are in the forecast. Total bettors have also gotten a life from the winds in Philly, with a 10-5 over/under record when winds get up over 10 mph.

Best bad weather under bets

PNC Park

If you think your weather’s been bad, just thank your lucky stars you’re not a Pirates season ticket holder. Pittsburgh has played 34 games at PNC Park and every single day has either been cloudy or raining, and Thursday’s home date with the Giants is no exception. The Bucs have gone 12-21-1 over/under in those games, compared to 18-13 over/under on the road where they hit .298 compared to .248 as hosts. The Pirates are expected to get hit with thundershowers Friday and may see more showers versus the Dodgers this weekend.

Kauffman Stadium

Kauffman Stadium was singled out for its bad weather by Schlegel, with a grounds keeper telling him, “You don't need the Farmers' Almanac. You can pretty much follow the Royals' schedule, and the rain chances increase when they come into town”. The Royals average 3.91 runs at home when the sun is shining but 3.36 when the forecast predicts clouds and rain, leading to an 8-13 over/under mark in those games.

Oriole Park at Camden Yards

Flash floods and even hail storms have terrorized most of Maryland this month, and there’s more to come this weekend. Baltimore is 7-12 over/under at home in bad weather this season and averaging just 3.95 runs in those games for compared to 6.00 under the sun. A soggy Camden Yards is also impacting visiting teams, who average 5.62 runs in nice weather compared to only 4.24 at Oriole Park.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yankees, A's could be fades after marathon Thursday tilt
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees will both have depleted bullpens heading into their respective games Friday.

The A’s prevailed 3-2 in 18 innings Thursday to complete a three-game sweep of the Bronx Bombers. Both teams gassed seven pitchers in the affair.

The A’s get to sleep in their own beds Thursday night before hosting the Seattle Mariners, while the Yankees make the short trip to duel with the Los Angeles Angels Friday.

The Yankees will have a very tired bullpen against a well-rested Angels squad. New York got a lackluster effort from starter Phil Hughes Wednesday night, who pitched only 4 1/3 innings before handing the ball over. The Yankees were then forced to use four relievers in the 5-2 loss to the A’s, making it two consecutive nights that the bullpen has seen a heavy workload.

New York will send Andy Pettitte, who has been dealing with back issues this season, to the mound Friday. If he can't go at least six innings, the Angels (-125) could be a good bet with the Yankee pen ailing. The veteran lefty is 14-11 in 31 career starts against the Halos but has a lofty 4.49 ERA.

The A’s (-199) will send Tom Milone to the hill Friday and should be in better shape than the Yankees. The lefty has pitched at least seven innings in his last two starts, surrendering only three earned runs over the pair of outings.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's MLB betting cheat sheet and tips
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

National

Los Angeles Dodgers at Pittsburgh Pirates (-159, 8)

Weather: High-60’s. Clear skies expected. Winds will blow out to right field at 8 mph.

Probable starters: Dodgers RH Stephen Fife (1-1, 3.78 ERA) vs. Pirates LH Jeff Locke (5-1, 2.39).

Fife has never faced the Pirates, and no player on Pittsburgh’s roster has a major-league at-bat against him, while Locke is 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA in three games (two starts) lifetime against Los Angeles. The Pirates are 6-1 in their last seven games as a home favorite.

St. Louis Cardinals at Miami Marlins (122, 7.5)

Weather: Roof will most likely be closed due to thunderstorm risk.

Probable starters: Cardinals RH Jake Westbrook (2-1, 1.62 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Jose Fernandez (3-3, 3.17)

Westbrook will make his first start since mid-May after being sidelined with elbow inflammation. Fernandez has pitched well at home, allowing just five runs in as many starts - but has yielded three homers. The Cardinals are 6-0 in their last six Friday games.

Chicago Cubs at New York Mets (-127, 7.5)

Weather: High-60s. 40 percent chance of showers. Winds will blow from left to right at 10 mph.

Probable starters: Cubs RH Edwin Jackson (2-8, 5.76 ERA) vs. Mets RH Shaun Marcum (0-7, 4.96)

Marcum can't buy a win this season, but he does own a 4-0 career mark versus the Cubs. The under is 4-1 in the last five meetings between the clubs and 4-0 in Marcum’s last four starts.

Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds (-140, 8.5)

Weather: Mid-70s. Clear skies expected. Winds will blow left to right at 6 mph.

Probable starters: Brewers RH Kyle Lohse (2-6, 4.03 ERA) vs. Reds RH Bronson Arroyo (6-5, 3.35)

The Reds swept a three-game set from the Brewers at home by a combined 22-11 from May 10-12, but Milwaukee has actually done quite well for itself lately with wins in five of the last six games. The under is 8-0 in Lohse’s last eight starts vs. a team with a winning record.

San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves (-132, 7)

Weather: Low-80s. Clear skies expected. Winds will blow in from left field at 3 mph.

Probable starters: Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (5-4, 3.58 ERA) vs. Braves RH Kris Medlen (3-6, 2.87)

The Braves return home after being swept in San Diego, and will face the last team to hand them three losses in a row. The San Francisco Giants defeated Atlanta at home May 10-12, outscoring the Braves 23-4. The over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.

Philadelphia Phillies at Colorado Rockies (-116, 9.5)

Weather: High-70s. Partly cloudy conditions expected. Winds will blow from right to left at 8 mph.

Probable starters: Phillies RH Kyle Kendrick (6-4, 3.22 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Juan Nicasio (4-2, 4.61)

Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki reportedly suffered a broken rib Thursday against Washington and could require up to six weeks to recover. Outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Dexter Fowler also were hurt, although their injuries are not considered serious. Philadelphia won seven of nine meetings in 2012 and has taken a remarkable 27 of the last 33 encounters with Colorado dating back to Sept. 2007.

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres (-121, 7)

Weather: Low-60s. Partly cloudy conditions expected. Winds will blow out to right field at 4 mph.

Probable starters: Diamondbacks RH Trevor Cahill (3-7, 4.02 ERA) vs. Padres LH Eric Stults (5-5, 3.53)

Cahill has lost three straight decisions and was rocked by the Giants in his last turn, giving up eight runs on nine hits in a season-low 3 2/3 innings. He has been tagged for 21 runs over 22 2/3 innings during his four-start winless drought, during which his ERA has risen from 2.48 to 4.02. The over is 10-1 in Arizona’s last 11 road games.

American

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles (-110, 9.5)

Weather: High-70s. A 10 percent chance of showers. Winds will blow from left to right at eight mph.

Probable starters: Red Sox RH Ryan Dempster (4-6, 4.40 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Chris Tillman (6-2, 3.89)

Dempster has put together three straight quality starts and has gotten plenty of support in the last two, with the Boston offense busting out for a total of 27 runs in those games. Tillman has had his own problems keeping the ball in the yard with 16 home runs allowed in 76 1/3 total innings. The BoSox are 0-4 in the last four meetings in Baltimore.

Kansas City Royals at Tampa Bay Rays (-170, 8)

Weather: Dome

Probable starters: Royals RH Luis Mendoza (1-3, 4.19 ERA) vs. LH Matt Moore (8-2, 3.78 ERA)

Mendoza has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last seven starts but is just 1-2 in that span. Moore has been knocked around in his last two outings, surrendering 15 runs (14 earned) over seven innings to suffer his first two defeats. The under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings at Tropicana Field.

Toronto Blue Jays at Texas Rangers (-131, 10)

Weather: Mid-90s. Mostly cloudy skies winds blowing in from center field at six mph.

Probable starters: Blue Jays LH Mark Buehrle (2-4, 5.06 ERA) vs. RH Justin Grimm (5-4, 5.25 ERA)

Buehrle has registered five quality outings over his last six starts - including a seven-inning stint last time out that saw him limit Texas to a run on four hits.
Control will be a key for Grimm, who has issued six walks over his last two starts after surrendering only one free pass in his three previous outings combined.
Eric Cooper will be the umpire behind the plate and the under is 4-1 in his last five behind the dish.

Chicago White Sox at Houston Astros (+165, 7.5)

Weather: Retractable roof

Probable starters: Chris Sale (5-4, 2.68 ERA) vs. Erik Bedard (1-3, 5.34 ERA)

Sale is looking to rebound after suffering back-to-back losses to the Oakland Athletics. Bedard was handed his first loss since April 26 on Saturday as he surrendered six runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings at Kansas City. The over is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings.

Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins (+126, 9)

Weather: A 30 percent chance of showers by game time and temperatures in the mid-70s. Winds will blow in from center field at 11 mph.

Probable starters: Tigers RH Rick Porcello (3-3, 4.86 ERA) vs. Twins LH Scott Diamond (4-5, 5.19)

Porcello was roughed up for five runs and 10 hits over five innings in a no-decision against Minnesota on May 23. Diamond is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts against Detroit this season and 2-2 with a 2.98 ERA in seven career outings against the Tigers. The Tigers are 16-6 in the last 22 meetings in Minnesota.

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels (-148, 8)

Weather: Sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s. Winds blowing out to right field at 6 mph.

Probable starters: Yankees LH Andy Pettitte (5-3, 3.82 ERA) vs. Angels LH C.J. Wilson (4-5, 4.02)

Pettitte picked up his 250th career victory in style, allowing just one run on three hits in 7 1/3 innings in a 3-1 triumph over Seattle Saturday. Wilson suffered his second straight loss and fifth in his last six decisions after allowing four runs in five innings against Boston Saturday. The Yankees are 1-6 in Pettitte's last seven road starts vs. Angels and they could be fatigued from an 18-inning affair last night in Oakland.

Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics (-185, 7.5)

Weather: Sunny skies and temperatures in the low-60s. Winds will blow out to right field at 10 mph.

Probable starters: Mariners LH Joe Saunders (4-6, 5.12 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Tommy Milone (6-5, 3.69)

Saunders has a 3.47 ERA in 22 career starts against the Athletics and is 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA in two outings this year. Milone is 3-0 in his last five starts after giving up five runs and six hits over five innings in a loss to Seattle on May 12. The under is 6-1 in Milone's last seven starts vs. the Mariners.

Note: The A's used seven pitchers in an 18-inning victory over the Yankees Thursday.

Interleague

Washington Nationals at Cleveland Indians (-135, 7.5)

Weather: Temperatures in the mid-60s and winds blowing in from center field at 9 mph.

Probable pitchers: Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (3-3, 3.59 ERA) vs. Indians RH Justin Masterson (8-5, 3.68)

Gonzalez saw his winless streak stretch to six starts with a no-decision Saturday in a 4-3 setback against the Minnesota Twins. At Progressive Field, Masterson is 5-1 with a 2.36 ERA this season. The under is 5-0 in Masterson's last fave interleague starts.

Preview: Cubs (27-38) at Mets (24-38)
Game: 2
Venue: Citi Field
Date: June 15, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

Nate Schierholtz continues to make a case for remaining in the Chicago Cubs' lineup.

David DeJesus won't be in it for awhile.

Schierholtz looks to continue his hot hitting and help the Cubs win for the sixth time in seven road games against the New York Mets on Saturday.

Schierholtz has appeared in 50 of Chicago's 65 games, starting 43 while splitting time in right field with Scott Hairston.

Lately, Schierholtz's impressive stretch is giving him the edge over Hairston, who is batting .153 on the season.

Schierholtz is 9 for 26 (.346) with two homers, two triples and two doubles during a seven-game hitting streak. He's also homered four times over his last eight starts, matching his career high of nine set in 2011 with San Francisco.

Manager Dale Sveum has moved Schierholtz up to third in the order, dropping Anthony Rizzo to fifth. Schierholtz responded by connecting for a solo homer in the first inning of Friday's 6-3 win in the opener of this three-game series at Citi Field.

"I'm just kind of mixing it up. Right now you could say he's our best hitter," Sveum said.

Schierholtz has a .333 average against the Mets, his highest against any opponent with at least 65 at_bats. He's 9 for 23 (.391) with two homers and two triples over his last eight meetings.

Rizzo has a .405 average in nine games against New York after getting three hits Friday.

DeJesus is headed for the disabled list after injuring his right shoulder when he crashed into the outfield wall trying to make a catch Friday.

Ryan Sweeney, who may replace him in center, is 8 for 18 (.444) in six games versus New York, which has lost nine of 11.

The Cubs (27-38) will send Scott Feldman (5-5, 3.22 ERA) to the mound hoping he can come close to matching his most recent appearance against the Mets. The right-hander tossed 6 2-3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts in an 8-2 home victory May 18.

He's making his first appearance in Flushing since June 13, 2008, when he gave up seven runs in five innings of a loss with Texas.

Feldman had one of his worst outings of the season in Monday's 6-2 loss to Cincinnati, yielding five runs and seven hits, including a grand slam, over six innings.

The Mets are scheduled to turn to Jonathon Niese (3-5, 4.24) for the second time since skipping a turn in the rotation due to a sore shoulder.

Despite the injury, he's compiled a 1.37 ERA over his last three starts. The left-hander, though, is 0-1 over that stretch since he's been backed by five total runs, while the defense has committed three errors.

Niese was in line for the win Sunday against Miami after allowing three runs - two earned - in 6 2-3 innings, but New York's bullpen failed to hold a one-run lead before the Marlins won 8-4 in 10.

He's 0-2 with a 7.47 ERA in three home starts versus Chicago, losing 7-0 in the most recent July 8. He gave up four runs in the first before serving up a three-run homer to Starlin Castro and leaving after the seventh.

Preview: Red Sox (41-28) at Orioles (39-29)
Game: 3
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Date: June 15, 2013 4:05 PM EDT

The Baltimore Orioles are in position to record their longest home winning streak over the Boston Red Sox in 43 years.

Chris Davis and Manny Machado will likely have a say in that.

Davis and Machado look to continue their respective success at the plate Saturday as they try to help the Orioles move even closer to the AL East-leading Red Sox.

Baltimore (39-29) has won seven of eight against Boston (41-28) dating to last season, including five in a row at Camden Yards. The Orioles haven't had a longer home streak in the series since reeling off seven straight wins bridging 1969 and '70.

Getting closer to matching that run would also put Baltimore in position to overtake the Red Sox for the division lead heading into Sunday's finale of this four-game series.

For now, the Orioles trail by 1 1/2 games, the closest they've been to first place since May 13.

Davis and Machado are big reasons Baltimore is gaining ground. Davis hit his major league-leading 22nd homer and Machado had three hits with two doubles in Friday's 2-0 win. They had two hits apiece and combined for three RBIs a day earlier, when Davis' walkoff single secured a 5-4, 13-inning win.

"Obviously you want to continue to play as well as you can, no matter if you're at home or on the road, if it's early or late in the season," Davis said. "But we know we're close. And any time a division rival comes in, you want to try to take as many games as you possibly can. I think we're pleased with the way things have gone so far, and hopefully we can continue it."

Davis is hitting .424 with six homers, 10 RBIs and 10 runs over his last 10 meetings with the Red Sox, while Machado - the major league leader in hits (95) and doubles (30) - has put together a career-high 12-game hit streak.

Freddy Garcia (3-3, 4.47 ERA) will try to win for the fourth time in five starts for the Orioles. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his past five outings overall and is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his last three at home.

The only runs the right-hander allowed in six innings of Monday's 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels came on a pair of solo homers, and only a long rain delay kept him from continuing.

Garcia is 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA over his last six games - four starts - versus Boston.

The Red Sox were held to three hits Friday and have a .167 average with 11 runs over the last five games at Camden Yards.

Dustin Pedroia is 3 for 18 over that span after hitting .344 during his first 15 games there.

John Lackey (3-5, 3.14) will try to win for only the second time in seven road starts this year.

His struggles away from home continued against Tampa Bay on Monday, when he allowed four runs and 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 10-8 win in 14. The right-hander is 1-4 with a 4.88 ERA on the road this season, yielding five homers in his last 11 2-3 innings.

Lackey is 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA in his last three games at Baltimore, but this is his first appearance there since June 6, 2010.

He'll face Machado for the first time, but he may not be thrilled to get re-acquainted with Davis and Nick Markakis. Davis is 8 for 17 (.471) with two doubles and a homer off him, while Markakis owns a .357 average with three doubles and a triple in 42 career at_bats.

Preview: Blue Jays (30-36) at Rangers (38-29)
Game: 3
Venue: Rangers Ballpark in Arlington
Date: June 15, 2013 4:05 PM EDT

A matchup with the sputtering Texas Rangers might be just what R.A. Dickey needs to break out of his funk.

The Toronto Blue Jays knuckleballer will try to bounce back and become the latest pitcher to stifle the Rangers on Saturday.

Dickey (5-8, 5.11 ERA) has yielded at least six runs in three of his last four starts, and had to deal with a dense fog Monday on Chicago's South Side. The right-hander gave up seven runs and 10 hits over five innings in a 10-6 defeat to the White Sox.

"It was the first time I've ever played in those conditions. It was tough. But I had opportunities to make big pitches with two outs," he said.

Dickey will try to get back on track in his second career start against the Rangers (38-29), and first since 2008, with Seattle.

He'll face a team that's batting .216 and has scored 36 runs in 13 games this month, going 4-9. Texas has plated five runs during a season-high four consecutive defeats, all at home.

Elvis Andrus showed his frustration Friday by getting ejected for arguing a called third strike in the sixth inning.

"When going through the spells they're going through, they're going to get upset," manager Ron Washington said. "If they don't get upset, that probably means they don't care."

The Rangers had five singles in an 8-0 loss to the Blue Jays (30-36), who are now on the verge of matching their longest win streak in 2013.

"This is what we believed since the beginning that we could do," designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion said. "So we know what we can do and we want to keep doing it."

Texas, meanwhile, is hoping to avoid dropping five straight a home for the first time since Sept. 13-18, 2009. The Rangers are 1-4 against the Blue Jays this season.

Texas' Josh Lindblom (0-1, 5.91) will try to deny Toronto from winning four straight for the first time since May 11-15 in his third major league start.

After being recalled from the minors to fill in for an injured Alexi Ogando, Lindblom gave up three runs and five hits over a career-high six innings Monday and did not get a decision in a 6-3 win against Cleveland. The right-hander, who has totaled 103 appearances in the majors, also fanned a career-best six batters while issuing one walk.

"In both my starts I've had to go out there and battle, but the other team doesn't care about that," Lindblom told the team's official website. "I was able to compete, even though I didn't have my best fastball, and I was able to keep them off balance."

The Rangers are hoping Jeff Baker can return to help the team's fledgling starter. The utility player sprained his right thumb on a high-five from a teammate in Thursday's opener and is day to day.

Baker is batting .317 with nine home runs, his most since he hit a career-best 12 for Colorado in 2008.

Baker has never faced R.A. Dickey but catcher A.J. Pierzynski is 4 for 9 with a home run and a double all-time versus the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner.

Mark DeRosa is the only current Blue Jays player to register more than one hit against Lindblom, going 2 for 2.

Preview: Giants (35-31) at Braves (39-28)
Game: 2
Venue: Turner Field
Date: June 15, 2013 4:05 PM EDT

The Atlanta Braves will face a tough decision when one of their pitchers returns from injury in the near future, but it's hard to imagine Mike Minor being removed from the rotation.

Looking to stay unbeaten against NL opponents, Minor tries for a sixth consecutive victory as the slumping Braves try to avoid a season-worst fifth consecutive loss Saturday against the visiting San Francisco Giants.

Already three wins away from matching his career high set last season, Minor (8-2, 2.44 ERA) has thrived in his fourth year in the majors. The left-hander, whose only two losses came against Kansas City and Detroit, is 7-0 with a 1.94 ERA over 10 starts against the NL.

Minor has been especially good over his last seven starts overall, going 5-0 with a 1.76 ERA while striking out 47 over 46 innings. He turned in another solid showing Sunday, allowing one run and six hits over six innings during an 8-1 road win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"It's just a friendly competition among everybody. You always want to top the guy before you," he said of the Braves' rotation, which ranks fifth in all of baseball with a 3.44 ERA.

Despite those impressive numbers, Atlanta is looking to create a spot in the rotation with Brandon Beachy (Tommy John surgery) expected back soon. Originally on track to return Tuesday, Beachy will instead be held out a little bit longer after feeling some soreness.

Considered a candidate to move to the bullpen when Beachy returns, Kris Medlen was outpitched Friday by San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner, who combined with Sandy Rosario to three-hit Atlanta in a 6-0 win.

The Braves (39-28), who have totaled five runs in their last three games, have gone 4 for 25 with runners in scoring position during their skid. Jason Heyward was hitting .395 during a 10-game hitting streak before going 0 for 4 Friday.

"Right from the very beginning we go down 1-0 and they added some runs, which probably made (Bumgarner) even tougher to face," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Our bats didn't look very good."

The Giants (35-31), meanwhile, are heating up, plating 42 runs in their last six games after totaling eight in their previous six.

Gregor Blanco went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and Buster Posey added three hits and scored twice Friday for San Francisco, which is 12-16 since May 14 despite winning four of six.

"We're coming up on the second half here," Bumgarner said. "If we want to make a playoff push, I think everybody knows it's time to turn it around."

San Francisco now turns to Chad Gaudin (2-1, 2.32), who's won both his starts since transitioning to the rotation. After allowing two runs and four hits over six innings during a 4-2 victory at St. Louis on June 2, Gaudin gave up two runs and five hits in six innings to beat Arizona 6-2 on Sunday.

Gaudin has struck out 12 during those outings while issuing one free pass, an intentional walk.

"It's letting the hitter know that you're not going to pitch around him," he told MLB's official website. "It makes for a better game."

Gaudin is 0-1 with a 7.78 ERA over 13 games - one start - versus Atlanta. He's had a rough time against Dan Uggla, who's 4 for 12 with two homers and a double in their matchups. Gaudin, though, has held the Upton brothers to a combined three hits in 28 at_bats.

Justin Upton is hitting .190 with just one homer and two RBIs over his last 16 games, and B.J. Upton is hitting a major league-worst .159 after going 0 for his last 8.

Preview: Dodgers (28-38) at Pirates (40-27)
Game: 2
Venue: PNC Park
Date: June 15, 2013 4:05 PM EDT

As good as Clayton Kershaw was in his last outing, he has now gone nearly a month without winning and still doesn't feel real comfortable.

The Los Angeles Dodgers ace hopes to avoid his longest winless drought in 3 1/2 years and continue his recent domination of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday at PNC Park.

Kershaw (5-4, 1.88 ERA) is 0-2 with a 3.33 ERA in four starts since throwing a three-hitter to beat Milwaukee 3-1 on May 20. He hasn't endured a longer stretch without winning since going 0-3 in his final 11 starts of the 2009 season.

The former Cy Young Award winner was in line for a victory Monday after allowing one run and six hits over seven innings, but then-closer Brandon League yielded four runs in the ninth of a 5-4 loss to Arizona.

Though Kershaw's line was solid, he again didn't seem to be at his best.

"It was a battle out there," he said. "I didn't have great fastball command. I was 1-0, 2-0 basically the whole night. ... I'm glad I made it through seven."

Manager Don Mattingly pulled Kershaw after 99 pitches, his fewest since April 6.

"When he's really feeling good, he's kind of giving you that `I got it. I got it. I got it,'" said Mattingly, who returns after a one-game suspension for his role in Wednesday's two bench-clearing incidents with Arizona.

"He's just aggressive about it, and as soon as you start walking toward him, he's letting you know (he wants to continue). But (Monday) it wasn't like that."

Kershaw's teammates haven't offered much support, averaging 3.0 runs in his last eight starts as he's gone 2-2 with a 1.99 ERA.

The left-hander hasn't needed much help when facing the Pirates over the past three years, going 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in three starts with one walk and 24 strikeouts. Kershaw defeated the Pirates on April 6, allowing two hits and striking out nine in seven innings of a 1-0 win.

Starling Marte had both hits off Kershaw, but he's missed the last two games with a rib injury and it's unclear if he will play this weekend.

Pittsburgh (40-27) did fine without him Friday, beating Los Angeles (28-38) for the first time in four tries this season with a 3-0 victory. Andrew McCutchen had a two-run double and is 11 for 22 with five RBIs in the last six games for the Pirates, who have won five of seven.

With A.J. Burnett recently going on the disabled list, the Pirates will give Brandon Cumpton his major league debut. The 24-year-old right-hander began the season at Double-A Altoona, then was 4-4 with a 3.31 ERA in 11 appearances - 10 starts - for Triple-A Indianapolis.

"(Cumpton is) a three-pitch guy, a strike-thrower to both sides of the plate. He's a competitor," manager Clint Hurdle told the Pirates' official website.

It remains to be seen if Cumpton is the long-term replacement for Burnett, out indefinitely with a torn right calf.

"No need to get ahead of ourselves," Hurdle said. "We'll give him the ball and see where he can take it. We'll take it one start at a time."

Fellow rookie Yasiel Puig had two of the Dodgers' six hits Friday during their fifth loss in six games. The standout outfielder is batting .487 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 11 games since making his big league debut June 3, but Puig has only one extra-base hit in his last six contests.

Los Angeles has dropped 12 of 15 on the road.

Preview: Cardinals (43-24) at Marlins (20-46)
Game: 2
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: June 15, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

While the Miami Marlins own baseball's worst record, they haven't played like it over the last week.

Getting the best of the major league-leading St. Louis Cardinals again would boost their confidence even further.

The Marlins try for a fifth win in seven games as they host the Cardinals on Saturday.

Last in the majors in runs (199), on-base percentage (.286) and slugging percentage (.326), Miami (20-46) has picked up the pace during a 4-2 stretch. The Marlins have hit .324 and scored a combined 18 runs in their last three wins, including Friday's 5-4 series-opening victory.

Giancarlo Stanton went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs while Juan Pierre, batting .381 during a season-high 10-game hitting streak, added two more hits and his team-leading 18th stolen base. After missing six weeks with a strained right hamstring, Stanton has hit safely in all four games since coming off the disabled list, going 6 for 16 with a homer and five RBIs.

Miami also got a big lift from rookie Jose Fernandez, who struck out a career-high 10 over seven sharp innings before Steve Cishek recorded his eighth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

"He really was in complete control of that game," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Fernandez. "He set the tone against a great team, a great lineup, and it was fun to watch him."

Allen Craig, Yadier Molina, David Freese and Jon Jay each drove in a run for St. Louis (43-24), which dropped to 4-3 on its current nine-game trip.

Despite Friday's loss, the Cardinals are 23-9 over their last 32 games in opposing ballparks. They are 19-7 in their last 26 road matchups versus Miami.

St. Louis will try to bounce back behind Lance Lynn (8-1, 3.00 ERA), who ranks among the NL leaders in wins, strikeouts per nine innings (9.11) and run-support average (6.67).

Lynn, though, wasn't at his best Sunday, allowing four runs in six innings during an 11-4, 10-inning win at Cincinnati.

"It was one of those games where I felt the first batter in every inning was on, and I couldn't get into a rhythm," Lynn told MLB's official website. "When you have those games, it's just a grind."

The Marlins counter with Tom Koehler (0-4, 3.91), who remains winless in seven career starts and 20 games overall. The right-hander has gone 0-4 with a 4.14 ERA in six starts since joining the rotation May 12.

Koehler gave up four runs and six hits over seven innings in Sunday's 8-4, 10-inning road win over the New York Mets.

He'll need to be cautious against Carlos Beltran, who's batting .356 with four homers and 13 RBIs during a 13-game hitting streak. Craig has also been locked in of late, going 27 for 71 (.380) with three homers and 15 RBIs over a 17-game stretch.

The Marlins, meanwhile, could again be without Logan Morrison, who was scratched prior to Friday's win with tightness in his back. Morrison, who missed the first two months of the season while recovering from knee surgery, is 4 for 9 in three games since debuting Sunday.

"Usually, back things are more than just a day," Redmond said. "I would assume he'd be out for a couple of days. We'll see. Hopefully not."
