TORONTO – Following a Week 5 that saw three of the four games be decided by three points or less, Week 6 will feature a shortened schedule, as half the league takes a breather during their bye week,

The two games this week will have major implications on the standings in both divisions. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue their four-game home stand on Friday night, as they play host to the Montreal Alouettes.

With a win, the Bombers will leapfrog the Als for third place in the East Division, while the Als will be in an unfamiliar last.

Monday will see the BC Lions travel east to take on the Toronto Argonauts at Rogers Centre. Last week, the Lions snapped a two-game losing streak with a convincing victory over the Calgary Stampeders, placing them in a three-way tie for first in the West.

The Argos, meanwhile, will aim for their third win in as many weeks, hoping to earn some much needed breathing room atop the East Division.

Equipped with the most up-to-date storylines, roster moves, stats, milestones and trends, the Week 5 CFL.ca Game Notes will provide you with everything you need for the upcoming week of Canadian football.

By the Numbers

Heading into their Week 6 clash with the Bombers, the Alouettes are in much more unfamiliar territory than you might have initially thought.

Not since 2008 – Marc Trestman’s first year in the CFL – has Montreal been below .500 at this point in the season.

Is it a matter of Montreal struggling? Or is it that the Als are no longer the only team with the potential to dominate the East?

When looking at the numbers, it’s likely the latter.

Through five weeks this season, 65 per cent of the games have been decided in the final three minutes, while 50 per cent of them have been decided by four points or less.

Last week there were no kick return touchdowns but the trend remains strong with seven in 20 games. Each team has at least one player with “big play” return capability and there have been 28 such returns this year.

An emerging trend this season is the possibility of a big comeback in each game. Of the 20 games played, teams have overcome 10+ point deficits with two of those from 17 points or more.

Hamilton’s Henry Burris became only the third QB since 2002 to record four or more TD passes in consecutive games. Casey Printers last did it in 2005, while Khari Jones did it for Winnipeg in 2002.

BC’s Travis Lulay completed his last 17-of-18 passes in the second half for a perfect QB rating of 158.3 in the win over Calgary.

Toronto and BC meet in Week 6 and they rank one and in both offence and defence after five games.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 7

August 8, 2012

While last week's schedule in the CFL was limited to just two games in light of two straight weeks of byes, the action was not. Last Friday, Montreal reasserted itself as a force in the East with a 36-26 victory over Winnipeg as a two-point road favorite.
In a special Monday edition of the CFL, the defending champion British Columbia Lions extended their current winning streak to two games by grinding out an 18-9 win over Toronto on the road as three-point favorites

The following is brief preview of this week's CFL games along with the opening point spread and 'over/under' lines as provided by 5Dimes.

Thursday, Aug. 9

Calgary Stampeders vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-4) Total: 61

Calgary finds itself in last place in the West Division coming off of its bye with a 2-3 record both straight up and against the spread. The Stampeders' normally potent offense ground to a halt in a 34-8 loss to BC as one-point home underdogs right before the break. The total stayed 'under' the 58-point line after going 'over' in three of their first four games. With Kevin Glenn as its starting quarterback, Calgary will try and recapture the formula that led to an average of 36.8 points a game in its first four outings of the year.

The Tiger Cats went into their bye week with a thrilling 35-34 victory over Saskatchewan as 3 ½-point road underdogs. The win boosted their overall record to 3-2 SU and a profitable 4-1 ATS. The total has now gone 'over' in all five of their games. Hamilton is another team with a potent offensive attack, but it has to be a bit leery of a defense that is giving-up an average of 33.4 points a game.

The Stampeders are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games following a SU loss and 6-2-1 ATS in their last eight games following a bye week. The total has gone 'over' in six of their last eight games overall. The Tiger-Cats have enjoyed recent success in the month of August with a 5-2 record ATS in their last seven games. The total has gone 'over' in eight of their last 10 home games. Head-to-head, Calgary is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings and total has gone 'over' in five of those games.

Friday, Aug. 10

Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Edmonton Eskimos (- 1 ½) Total: 45

The Roughriders fast 3-0 start both SU and ATS was short-lived with SU losses in their last two games heading into their bye week. They dropped a 41-38 decision to Calgary in overtime as 3 ½-point road underdogs before losing to Hamilton by just one point in Week 5. Saskatchewan is still a healthy 4-1 ATS with the total going 'over' in three of the five games. The defense started the season on solid footing, but has given-up a total of 76 points in the last two games.

Edmonton dropped to 3-2 both SU and ATS right before its bye week with a tough 23-22 loss to Winnipeg in Week 5 as a one-point road favorite. The Eskimos remain just a half of a game out of the lead in the West, but have to be concerned about a rash of injuries to their offensive line. Two of their tackles remain out indefinitely with knee injuries and center Gord Hinse is listed as questionable for Friday night's game.

Saskatchewan has failed to cover in five of its last six games following a SU loss and the total has stayed 'under' in its last five games following a bye. The Eskimos are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following an ATS loss. The total has stayed 'under' in nine of their last 13 home games. Edmonton has won five of the last seven meetings SU and is 4-3 ATS. The total has stayed 'under' in 16 of the last 21 meetings in Edmonton.

CFL

Week 6

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CFL preview: Calgary Stampeders at Hamilton Tiger-Cats
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Stampeders vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-4, 61)

Ivor Wynne Stadium, Hamilton, 7:00p.m. ET

After an 0-2 start to the season the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have become one of the hottest bets in summer sports after winning three straight games outright and four straight games against the spread.

The streak comes just in time for quarterback Henry Burris to face his old team, the Calgary Stampeders, Thursday night in Hammertown. Burris has helped the Ticats score at least 35 points in each of their last four games, making them the highest scoring team in the league. He has tossed 15 touchdowns against just three interceptions.

Things are a little more bleak on defense where Hamilton ranks last in the league in points allowed (33.4 per game), yards allowed (426.4), and fewest sacks (6). The only good part about that for bettors is the over has been reliable at 5-0 in Hamilton's games this season.

Calgary’s defense hasn’t been any better than its opponent. The Stampeders have surrendered at least 33 points in each of its last four games and they went 1-3 straight up and against the spread during that span.

The offensive line is a huge area of concern for Calgary entering Week 7 after it helped the offense gain just 29 yards rushing in a 34-8 loss to B.C. in its last game in Week 5. There are key injuries at left guard and right tackle and they’ll be plugging holes with less experience than they’d like.

Underdog Calgary will need a big game from wide receiver Nik Lewis, who leads the league with six touchdowns this season.

Trends and notes:

Over is 5-0 in Stampeders last five vs. a team with a winning record.
Stampeders rank second in the league with just 90.8 rushing yards against.
Stampeders rank last in the league in time of possession at 22:50 per game.
Stampeders are 5-2 ATS in their last seven meetings.
Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
Kevin Glenn is 1-2 as starting QB for Calgary in replacement of the injured Drew Tate. Glenn was traded to Calgary in the Burris trade in the offseason.

Week 8

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Canadian Bacon: Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Winnipeg Blue Bombers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+3, 55)

Hamilton was dealt a reality check, losing 31-20 to the Calgary Stampeders in Week 7 following a three-game winning streak that saw the TiCats extend a four-game ATS run.

Heavy rain kept both teams from getting on the scoreboard early in the game and Hamilton was outworked by former QB Kevin Glenn and a scrappy Stamps team looking for its first road win of the season.

Now, the Tiger-Cats turn their attention to a Blue Bombers squad that is trying to climb out of the league’s basement. Winnipeg followed its first win of the year with a 36-26 loss to Montreal in Week 6 and had the bye week to ready itself for Thursday’s home date with Hamilton.

The Bombers are making a switch at QB, giving the nod to Joey Elliott over Alex Brink for Week 8. Elliot hasn’t started a CFL game since 2010 but head coach Paul LaPolice is confident in Elliot. LaPolice has come under fire after the 1-5 start but told the media he isn’t worried about job security.

“I’m preparing to win a football game,” LaPolice told the Winnipeg Sun. “We’re one-third through our season, we’ve had some challenges for our first third of the season. There’s still 12 football games to play. Nobody in the CFL has established themselves as elite. We’re certainly not happy (with how) we’re playing and we need to get better and I think we will. I’m concerned about winning a football game.

“Sometimes, I think people gloom and doom very much. Things out of my control are out of my control. We’ve got a lot of football left to be played.”

LaPolice will also match wits with one of his former staff, Hamilton’s defensive coordinator Casey Creehan. Creehan, who served two years under LaPolice, has helped the TiCats improve against the pass, ranking third in the CFL. Hamilton will attack Winnipeg’s untested arm early and often.

TRENDS:

* Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Winnipeg.
* Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
* Tiger-Cats are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games following a loss.
* Blue Bombers are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 Thursday games.

CFL

Week 8

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Canadian Bacon: Toronto Argonauts at Calgary Stampeders
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Argonauts at Calgary Stampeders (-4.5, 55)

So much for a relaxing bye week for the Argos. Toronto released the CFL’s top rusher Cory Boyd, with rumors of on and off-field issues reaching the breaking point.

The Argonauts offense, which is averaging just 23 points per game, hit a new low in Week 6, losing 18-9 to the B.C. Lions while mustering only 215 yards passing and 37 yards on the ground. Quarterback Ricky Ray threw three interceptions and the departed Boyd ran for just 23 yards.

Head coach Scott Milanovich believes the problem is rooted in the offensive line, which underwent a shake-up heading into Saturday’s game. Left tackle Wayne Smith is moving to guard and 6-foot-7 beast Tony Washington is stepping into protect Ray’s blindside.

“Absolutely (the offensive line) can take some blame, but there is blame to be spread around, including me,” Milanovich told the media. “Everybody has to be accountable.”

The Stampeders, who rank third among CFL defenses, will put that new o-line mixture to the test this weekend. Calgary is coming off a solid 31-20 win over Hamilton in Week 7 but has struggled with Toronto in the past.

The Stamps have lost four straight (0-4 ATS) to Toronto after posting six wins in a row over the Argos going back to 2007. One of those losses came in a 39-36 Toronto victory off a last-second field goal back in early July.

"We need to be better prepared. That's been my theme all week long," Calgary head coach John Hufnagel told reporters. "Even though we did some unbelievably hard things well in the game… there were several other plays where we were knuckleheads."

Trends:

* Argonauts are 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.
* Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings in Calgary.
* Argonauts are 1-5 ATS in their last six meetings in Calgary.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 9

August 21, 2012

The entire CFL was back in action in Week 8 after a couple of bye weeks and as a result the race in both the East and West Division is as tight as ever. Winnipeg started things off on Thursday night with a stunning 32-25 victory over Hamilton as a three-point home underdog and Montreal beat Edmonton 38-25 on Friday night as a two-point underdog on the road.

The upsets continued into the weekend with Toronto getting past Calgary 22-14 as a 4 ½-point road underdog, but British Columbia snapped the streak at three with a convincing 24-5 win over Saskatchewan as a six-point home favorite in Sunday's finale.

CFL

Week 9

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Canadian Bacon: Hamilton Ticats vs. Montreal Als
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE MATCHUP: This marks the second meeting of the season between these two East Division rivals. Hamilton won the first one at home 39-24 as 2 ½-point favorites and the combined 63 points went over the total of 60. Montreal is tied atop the division with Toronto at 4-3 but Hamilton sits right behind at 3-4.

THE LINE: The odds haven’t moved much since this one opened. Some books opened at 4 and later moved to 4.5. The total has held steady at 60, which matches the season high for both teams. The over is 6-1 in Hamilton’s games this season and 5-2 in Montreal’s.

HAMILTON: It’s hard coming up with ways to talk about how bad Hamilton’s defense is. For starters, they let Winnipeg QB Joey Elliott win CFL player of the week honors in just his third start ever last week. The Tabbies also rank worst in just about every category that means anything, which is why no team in the league is a better over bet this season. The Ticats have held only two opponents to fewer than 30 points and maybe the lone bright spot is that one of them happens to be Montreal.

The offense looks like it might be starting to crack at the seams while having to carry the load. Quarterback Henry Burris is having a stellar season but he committed four fumbles last week in a game in which Hamilton committed six turnovers. It was the second straight loss and blown cover for Hamilton.

MONTREAL: When a man is as good for as long as Anthony Calvillo has been, it gets boring talking about him. But you have to because he’s had six straight 300-plus passing yard games and he’s on pace to pass for the most yards of his career, which he did in 2004. That’s big because he happens to be the all-time passing leader in pro football history.

That’s a roundabout way of saying Montreal’s offense is clicking. The Als have won and easily covered the spread in their last two games while scoring a combined 71 points. The defense isn’t much better than Hamilton’s though, allowing 30.4 points per game. This game could come down to who gets the ball last.

BETTING NOTES:
Montreal is 1-7 against the spread in its last eight home games
The Tiger-Cats are 6-1 in their last seven games against a team with a winning record
The Tiger-Cats are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven meetings

BCLions (5-2) @ Winnipeg (2-5)-- Bombers (+7.5) opened season with 33-16 loss in Vancouver, when they were outgained 358-204; after an 0-4 start, Bombers won two of last three games at home, but four of their five losses are by 10+ points. BC won its last three games, allowing 8-9-5 points; they're 2-1 on road and only one of their five wins is by less than 10 points. Lions had one takeaway (-6) in first four games, but have nine (+9) in last three- they had 125 rushing yards in first meeting with Bombers. Last five British Columbia games all stayed under the total.

Calgary (3-4) @ Saskatchewan (3-4)-- Roughriders were 3-0, then lost 41-38 in OT at Calgary in Week 4, and haven't won since, getting outscored 90-50 in second half of those games- they're 2-1 at home, with only loss by point to Hamilton. Riders were +4 in turnovers in 3-0 start, but are -8 since, with no takeaways at all in their last three games. Underdogs covered six of seven Calgary games; Stampeders lost two of three on road, but covered both tries as underdog. Last three Calgary games stayed under total; three of last four Saskatchewan games went over the total.

Edmonton is 4-1 when they allow 20 or less points, 0-2 when they allow more- they're 1-2 on road, with losses by 1-16 points. CFL

Week 9

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Canadian Bacon: B.C. Lions at Winnipeg Blue Bombers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

British Columbia at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+5.5, 49)

THE MATCHUP: The Lions beat the Blue Bombers 33-16 in the first game of the season and easily covered the 8-point spread. B.C. now comes in on a three-game winning streak while Winnipeg has been just plain streaky lately.

THE LINE: The way B.C. has been playing, don't be surprised if this line moves up from 5.5 points as game time approaches. The total has dropped a point to 49, which means bettors have noticed the way the Lions' defense is performing.

B.C.: The Lions offense is fun to watch but it's the defense that has stolen the show lately. The D has now gone over 180 minutes without allowing a touchdown - the main reason B.C. has won and covered in its last three games. The Lions have also played under the total in their past five games. The team leads the league with +8 turnover margin and intercepted Saskatchewan three times last week. Meanwhile, the offense is averaging over 400 yards a game.

WINNIPEG: It's a little disturbing just how bad the Bombers defense has gotten compared to last year's 'Swaggerville' performance. Their numbers are pretty close to Hamilton's - the worst defensive team in the league - with 437 yards against per game. They have the most giveaways of any team with 20 this season, a terrible number heading in against a team like B.C. There may be some hope on offense suddenly, though. QB Joey Elliott earned CFL player of the week honors in his first CFL start last week.

BETTING NOTES:
Under is 10-1 in Lions last 11 road games.
Under is 12-3 in the last 15 meetings.
Blue Bombers are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games as a home underdog of 3.5-10.0.
Blue Bombers are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. win.
Blue Bombers are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. win.

Week 9

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CFL preview: Week 9 weekend breakdowns
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Stampeders at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-3.5, 53)

It's a roller coaster season for the Roughriders, who won their first three games to start the year and have now lost their last four. Sasky failed to cover the last three of those. QB Darian Durant needs to limit his interceptions - all seven of 'em have come during the losing streak.

Calgary has won the last four meetings in this series and covered four of those spreads. The Stamps' last three games have played under the total though as they struggle to generate offense. Penalties have hurt them at different times and QB Kevin Glenn is averaging just over 200 yards passing per game - a low number for the Canadian game.

Edmonton Eskimos at Toronto Argonauts (-3.5, 53)

This is the second meeting between these two teams, who traded quarterbacks in the offseason. So far, Edmonton got the worst of the deal with Steven Jyles, who is the lowest passing QB of any passer with seven starts under his belt. He's nursing a toe injury this week and his favorite target, Fred Stamps, is hurting also.

The Argos defense will be put to the test against running back Cory Boyd, who was unceremoniously dumped by the Argos about 10 days ago despite having a strong season so far. The defense ranks second in yards against in the CFL, but Boyd said this week he knows how to run on them. Argos QB Ricky Ray has to take a little comfort in the fact the Als ripped apart a banged up Eskies defense last week.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 10

August 29, 2012

The CFL regular season reaches the halfway point of its 18-game regular season with the defending champion British Columbia Lions holding a one-game edge in the West Division after squeaking by Winnipeg 20-17 as 6 ½-point home favorites last Friday night. They will face Montreal this week in the first game of a home-and-home series in what could very end-up being an early preview of this season's Grey Cup. The Alouettes are coming off a 31-39 victory over Hamilton as four-point home favorites to open-up a one game lead in the East.

In other action from Week 9, Last Saturday Calgary knocked off Saskatchewan 17-10 as a five-point road underdog and Edmonton cruised past Toronto 26-17 this past Monday night as a three-point road dog.

The following is brief preview of this week's CFL games along with the opening point spread and 'over/under' lines as provided by 5Dimes.

Friday, August 31

British Columbia Lions vs. Montreal Alouettes (-1) Total: 52 ½

The Lions' 6-2 SU record is tops in the CFL, but they are just 4-4 ATS overall and 2-2 ATS on the road. The total has stayed 'under' in their last six games. Montreal is 5-3 SU overall but just 3-5 ATS and 1-3 ATS at home. The total has gone 'over' in five of its last seven games. The total has gone 'over' in eight of their last nine games on a Friday. Head-to-head, the Lions are 21-6 ATS in the last 27 meetings and 10-2 ATS in their last 12 trips to Montreal. The total has gone 'over' in seven of the last nine meetings in Montreal.

Sunday, Sept. 2

Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders (-5) Total: 51

Last season's appearance in the Grey Cup must seem like a distant memory for Winnipeg after a 2-6 SU start to this season. It is 4-4 ATS and the total has gone 4-3-1 in its eight games. The Argonauts are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games following both a SU and ATS loss. The total has stayed 'under' in six of their last eight games on the road. Hamilton is 4-1 ATS in its last five games following a SU loss. The total has gone 'over' in eight of its last 11 home games. Head-to-head, the Tiger-Cats have won seven of the last nine meetings SU and they are 6-3 ATS. The total has stayed 'under' in eight of the last 10 meetings overall.

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Calgary Stampeders (-3) Total: 46 ½

The Eskimos are just one game back in the West with an overall record of 5-3 SU. They are also 5-3 ATS and the total has gone 3-4-1 this season. Calgary is 4-4 both SU and ATS overall, but 1-3 ATS at home this season. The total has stayed 'under' in five of its first eight games.

Edmonton is 1-4 ATS in its last five games following a SU win. The total has stayed 'under' in 10 of its last 14 games in the division. The Stampeders are 0-4-1 ATS in their last five games following a SU win and the total has stayed 'under' in seven of their last 10 games against the West.
