*PROVIDENCE over Villanova...Retooling Villanova had three Gs from LY’s powerful edition taken in the NBA draft. Star 6-7 sr. F Sumpter
is back for Wildcats after sitting out LY with knee injury, but he’s relying on trey much more than in previous seasons (perhaps trying to
improve his NBA prospects?). Providence has a blossoming star in 6-7, 240 soph McDermott (11 ppg, 11 rpg, 5.6 apg!) and late bloomer in
6-10, 240 sr. H. Hill (17 ppg on 70% FGs, 8 rpg, 3 bpg). Nova frontcourt “plays small,” so expect that duo to be doing lots of dunkin’ at friendly
Dunkin’ Donuts Center, where Friars have covered 7 of last 9 thru Jan. 19.

Look for Seattle to try and run here with Denver caught in a back-to-back spot. This has been an over series with the clubs going over in six of the last nine. Seattle is 18-8 Over the past two seasons versus teams making 33% or less of their 3-pt. shots. Supporting angles too say to Play Over - All teams where the total is greater than or equal to 200 (DENVER) - in a game involving two average teams (+/- 3 PPG differential.), after scoring 100 points or more 2 straight games (128-84 over the last 5 seasons 60.4%) and Play Over - Any team (SEATTLE) - after beating the spread by 30 or more points total in their last three games against opponent after going over the total by more than 18 points in their previous game (123-73 since 1996, 62.8%).

Phoenix Suns vs. Washington Wizards - Tuesday, Jan 23, 2007 7:00 PM
Sport: NBA - National Basketball Association 2 Units
Prediction: Washington Wizards
Line: Pinnacle @ 5 -105 - 1/22/2007 11:50:33 PM Eastern Time
Explanation: Washington has a knack for stepping up in big games while playing down to lesser competition. That was evident last time out as the Wizards struggled against the Celtics, needing overtime to pull out the victory. The Wizards will have to come out with more energy and focus but that has not been a problem in the past. Washington snapped a Dallas 12-game winning streak back on December 4th and it snapped the Suns' 15-game winning streak with a victory in Phoenix on December 22nd.
That loss by the Suns was only their second in their last 31 games so they are obviously playing the best basketball in the league. However, the schedule has not been overly difficult as they have played 21 of those 31 games against teams with a record not over .500. During this run, 14 games were on the road with nine of those against teams with a losing record. Overall, Phoenix has played the 22nd ranked schedule in the league while Washington has gone up against the 14th ranked slate in the NBA.
The huge run for the Suns actually sets up a situation going in the other direction based on the also very solid play of the Wizards. Play against road teams that have won 20 or more of their last 25 games against an opponent that has won five or six of its last seven games. This situation is 25-6 ATS (80.6 percent) over the last three seasons with the average point differential +4.5 ppg in favor of the home team. The average line on those games was right around a pickem so we get added line value here as well.
That was a long term situation and there is also a short term situation that sets up well for Washington. It is very simple yet very effective. Play on home teams off a home win scoring 110 or more points against opponent off a home win. This situation is 69-30 ATS (69.7 percent) over the last 5 seasons with the average point differential being +8.4 ppg in favor of the home team. Washington has shown to step up in these games, namely Gilbert Arenas, and will do so again on Tuesday. Play Washington Wizards 2 Units

Predicted Final:
Notre Dame vs. St. John's - Tuesday, Jan 23, 2007 7:30 PM
Sport: NCAA - National Collegate Basketball 2 Units
Prediction: Notre Dame
Line: Pinnacle @ -4.5 -112 - 1/22/2007 11:52:40 PM Eastern Time
Explanation: St. John’s enters this game coming off a huge home win against Syracuse, the first time it has beaten the Orange in seven years while giving Syracuse its first loss against a New York team in 48 games. Getting up again, especially against a team even better, will be difficult and just isn’t going to happen. The Red Storm have a 10-4 record at home but the schedule has been extremely soft as they have played a slate ranked 262nd in the nation. St. John’s is 0-4 against tams ranked 50th or better.
Notre Dame has easily handled the teams that it should be beating which might not normally be a rue indication of how a team is playing. However, the Irish are faring well against all teams as they are also 3-0 versus ranked opponents which is two more victories than a year ago when that squad posted a 1-7 record versus ranked foes. Obviously, St. John’s isn’t ranked but is does prove that Notre Dame’s record is not inflated as many do think.
Notre Dame is averaging 84.1 ppg which is good for 10th in the country and the Irish also rank 4th in margin of victory at 18.9 ppg. Nine of Notre Dame's 16 victories have been by 24 or more points. Notre Dame is shooting 48.6 percent from the floor including 40 percent from three-point range and the Irish have shot better than 50 percent from the field in 10 games this season. Notre Dame has been exceptional on the boards this season and is currently a +8.0 rebounding margin edge, good for 8th in the country. Play Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2 Units

(705) NOR Hornets and (706) PHI 76ers
Take "(705) NOR Hornets"
The New Orleans Hornets (16-23 SU, 20-18 ATS) take on the Sixers (11-30 SU, 19-21 ATS) Tuesday night from Philadelphia. The Hornets have been playing well of late, winning four of their last six road games straight up and covering five of the last seven away contests. That includes straight up wins at Miami and Chicago. Meanwhile, Philly is just 6-10 both SU and ATS this season at home. As a home favorite of four points or less, the Sixers are just 1-4 both SU and ATS this season. Moreover, the Sixers don't typically do well in the final game of a homestand, where they are just 2-8 ATS in their last 10 tries. Hornets definitely looking for the straight up win here tonight and against a weak Philly team we expect them to get it
BIG AL
Take Nevada - Las Vegas Rebels
At 10 pm, our complimentary selection is on the UNLV Rebels minus the points over San Diego State, as Lon Kruger's squad plays with triple-revenge from 3 losses last season to the Aztecs. San Diego State played well in defeat on Saturday, losing a close one to the Air Force, but .334 (or better) teams off a win are a 75% play at home with triple revenge (from 3 losses the previous year) vs. foes off a loss. Take UNLV. Good luck, as always, Al McMordie
LARRY COOK
Take Denver Nuggets
Denver has Carmello Anthony back in the line-up and it obviously helped last night in a blowout over Memphis. The Nuggets are finally starting to mesh as a team, winning their last four games straight up with great performances from Allen Iverson. Denver is averaging 6 more points per game than Seattle with their fast-break style of offense where they look to push the ball every time they get it. The Nuggets are definitely going to make a run at the playoffs and they are just happy to have Anthony back.
Denver blows Seattle out of the water in this one
JOHN MARTIN
Take New Orleans Hornets
The Hornets have been on an absolute tear lately even without star Chris Paul. They have won 4 out of their last 5 straight up while getting covers ATS in all five games. The Underdog in this series between the Hornets and 76ers is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings. Philadelphia is 1-8 ATS in their last 9 Tuesday night games. The 76ers are 2-6 SU and ATS in their last 8 games and are still trying to figure out how to win without Allen Iverson. Take the Hornets in this one while they're hot and looking to make a run at the playoffs this season.
Bobby Maxwell
Phoenix at WASHINGTON (+5)
2♦ WASHINGTON
This game has the potential to put out some lights on the scoreboard. Both teams can light it up and neither one plays much defense. We're going to grab the points and take the Wizards in this one.
Washington snapped the Suns' 15-game winning streak on Dec.22 with a 144-139 OT victory and now the Wizards have a chance to end a 13-game Suns' winning streak.
The Wizards are 17-3 at home this season, tops in the Eastern Conference and they haven't lost at the Verizon Center since Dec. 9. Washington has won four in a row overall and has experience ending winning streaks as the Wizards put an end to the Mavs' 12-game streak in early December.
This the first of a five-game road swing for the Suns who are 2-7 in Washington in their last nine visits and 3-8 ATS in the last 11 head-to-head meetings.
The thing to remember about the Suns is they always let teams back into it in the second half. They might build a big first half lead, but the Wizards have the offense to get back into it in the second half.
Grab the points and go with Washington.
2♦ WASHINGTON
We're going with the home underdog in this one because Alabama has been horrible on the road in big games. The Crimson Tide is 1-3 on the road this season and 0-2 on the highway in SEC games, with losses at Arkansas 88-61 and at Vanderbilt on Wednesday, 94-73.
Alabama gives up 89 a game on the road and gets outscored by 14 on average on the road. Meanwhile Auburn has won some big games at home this season, including an 83-80 win over Tennessee Wednesday as 4 1/2-point underdogs.
The Tigers have won and covered their last two SEC games at home and they are 6-3 ATS on the home court. Auburn averages 77 points a game at home and gives up 69.2.
Alabama has won seven straight in the series, including three straight at Auburn. The Tigers know they have the team to pull off this victory and they will deliver tonight. They are 6-2 ATS in their last eight home games while the Crimson Tide is just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 overall.
Play the home underdog in this one.

Phoenix Suns vs. Washington Wizards (NBA) - Jan 23, 2007 7:05 PM EST
Play: Point Spread: -5/-110 Phoenix Suns

The Wizards own one of the league's best trios in Arenas (29.7), Butler (21.0-8.1) and Jamison (19.2-8.2) and with 10 straight home wins, own the East's best home mark (17-3). Unfortunately, the Suns (13 straight wins) are coming to town tonight and will be very focused. The Wizards, behind Arenas' 54 points, won in Phoenix back on December 22 (144-139 in OT!). The Suns, who actually started the season 1-5, enter tonight's game with a 32-8 mark and have won 29 of their last 31 games. Amazingly, after opening 0-4 SU on the road, the Suns have won 13 of their last 14 on the road, losing only 101-99 at Dallas! Nash (19.3-11.5 APG). Marion (18.8-9.8 ) and Stoudemire (18.5-9.1) lead the way for a team averaging a league-best 111.5 PPG and one that owns the league's best point-differential, outscoring its opponents by an average margin of 8.9 PPG. Lay it with the Suns.

New Orleans Hornets vs. Philadelphia 76ers (NBA) - Jan 23, 2007 7:05 PM EST
Play: Point Spread: 2.5/-102 New Orleans Hornets
Play Title: 1 Unit on Hornets +2.5
The Hornets are streaking winning 4 of their last 5 so we'll ride them tonight against the struggling 76ers. The Hornets have really benefited from the return of power forward David West who is wasting no time putting up big numbers. With Bobby Jackson also back in the lineup, this banged up team is starting to see some life as we approach the All-Star break. Cheeks is trying everything to give his Sixers a chance to win. As he continues to mess with finding the right combinations of players on the court at the same time, New Orleans rattles off another win.

Game: Atlanta Hawks @ Chicago Bulls on Jan 23, 2007 8:30PM
Prediction: Chicago Bulls
Reason: We're not big on history but we are big on situational handicapping. In this case we have both factors on our side and that's why we're stepping out with a play here on the Bulls. We're willing to lay the points here not only because Chicago has won eight straight over the Hawks but also because the Bulls should be very motivated tonight. The Bulls have lost two straight after a three game winning streak and they can take out their frustration on a "lesser foe" tonight.
The Bulls are playing the second night of a back to back situation but they were at Indiana last night so it was not significant travel that was involved. Chicago had an awful first half at Indiana last night and although they rallied back they could never fully recover. As a result of this you can certainly look for a strong game from the Bulls tonight from the opening tip!
The Bulls also hold an advantage tonight in that the Hawks could be limited by issues in the backcourt as Salim Stoudamire is questionable with an illness. Tyronn Lue is doubtful with a strained groin. Also, Speedy Claxton continues to miss games due to a bad knee. The Hawks are just 6-14 on the road this season and they're playing a Bulls team that is tied with the Wizards for most home wins in the Eastern Conference with 17. Play Chicago minus the points

Game: T C U at Air Force (9:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: T C U +17.5
Air Force remains overrated at home. Yes, they are 10-0 straight up here but they are just 1-3 ATS! Texas Christian certaintly doesn't have much of a shot here but we do think they'll cover the very lofty 17.5 point number. They are a winning team afterall and Air Force is just 8-18 ATS vs. winning teams over the past three seasons. The Academy is also 0-6 ATS this season vs. conference foes. Look for TCU to play just enough defense here to keep this game from getting too far out of hand
