Preview: Nationals (47-47) at Marlins (35-57)
Game: 3
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: July 14, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

The Miami Marlins have an opportunity to head into the All-Star break riding their longest winning stretch in more than year.

Looking to win four in a row, the Marlins try to complete a home series sweep of the underachieving Washington Nationals on Sunday.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a tying homer in the ninth inning and Ed Lucas beat out a potential double play at first base in the 10th to give Miami (35-57) a 2-1 win over Washington on Saturday.

``That's a double play in April,' Miami manager Mike Redmond said. ``To win that thing on a fielder's choice, and a lot of good at_bats... it wasn't a thing of beauty, but I'll take it.'

The Marlins have followed a five-game skid with their fifth three-game win streak this season. A winner in 19 of 32, Miami last won four straight games June 27-July 1, 2012.

It's only other sweep of at least three games this season came against the New York Mets at home May 31-June 2.

Washington (47-47), meanwhile, is 1-5 on a seven-game trip and trying to avoid being swept on the road for the first time since Sept. 14-16 at Atlanta. The Nationals were swept at Miami last year.

Stanton has homered in consecutive games after hitting one in his previous 21 contests.

"I figured he wasn't going to throw a strike - which that wasn't,' Stanton said of the tying shot. "I just saw fastball and reacted to it.'

Miami's Henderson Alvarez (0-1, 5.73 ERA) will make his third straight start since he missed the first three months with shoulder inflammation. He allowed five runs and walked four in six innings of a 6-4 loss Tuesday in his second straight outing versus Atlanta.

"He came out in that first inning and he was lights-out," catcher Rob Brantly told the Marlins' official website. "He was competing and getting ahead in counts, making all his pitches, quality pitches. After that, I think we started nitpicking the zone too much. We started getting in hitters' counts.

"As long as we keep them on the defensive, I think we'll be all right."

Pitching for Toronto last year, the right-hander gave up four runs on three homers, including one to Bryce Harper, in seven innings of a 4-2 loss against Washington.

The reigning AL East champion Nationals have averaged 2.3 runs on the current trip to continue their disappointing season of mediocrity.

Harper went 0 for 3 and scored the lone run Saturday, but was ejected for arguing a called third strike in the eighth.

"You can't do that,' manager Davey Johnson said. "Take it out on the pitcher. You can't take the frustration out on the umpire.'

Harper will start Tuesday's All-Star game, but is 2 for 18 with six strikeouts in five games and hitting .196 (9 for 46) with one homer and six RBIs in July.

Washington's Taylor Jordan (0-2, 3.45) tries a third time to earn his first major league victory Sunday. The right-hander allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 4-2 loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Preview: Blue Jays (45-48) at Orioles (52-43)
Game: 3
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Date: July 14, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

As the Baltimore Orioles head into the All-Star break again a postseason contender, the underachieving Toronto Blue Jays have plenty of work ahead to become one.

The Blue Jays can start by winning their first road series in a month Sunday against the Orioles.

With the acquisitions of stars Jose Reyes, R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson, added to a roster that already included sluggers Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion, Toronto (45-48) was a preseason favorite in the AL East. However, a sprained ankle sidelined Reyes for more than two months, Dickey has 10 losses and the team is 20-27 on the road and last in the division.

Toronto is 7-12 since its franchise-tying 11-game winning streak ended, but in position to record its first winning road set since a four-game sweep at Texas from June 13-16.

J.P. Arencibia had a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning and Encarnacion hit his 25th homer in the Saturday's 7-3 road win over Baltimore (52-43). Trailing 3-2, five Blue Jays relievers allowed three hits over the final five innings.

Led by All-Star set-up man Steve Delabar, Toronto's bullpen is among the majors' best with a 2.92 ERA.

"There's not much to say other than they've really been lights out the whole year,' Arencibia said.

Headed to his first All-Star game, Encarnacion is batting .320 (16 for 50) with seven home runs and 16 RBIs in 12 games against the Orioles this season.

Johnson (1-4, 4.62 ERA), a two-time All-Star with Miami, is 0-2 with a 4.70 ERA in three starts since he allowed four runs in six innings to manage his only win, 13-5 over Baltimore on June 23.

However, the Blue Jays have not scored a single run with the right-hander on the mound in his last three. Johnson gave up two runs and three hits in seven innings of a 3-0 loss at Cleveland on Tuesday.

"It is a little bit frustrating, but when we don't score any runs, my job is to throw up zeroes,' he said.

A combined 0 for 5 versus Johnson, Chris Davis and Adam Jones each homered as Baltimore's three-game winning streak ended Saturday. A wild-card qualifier last season, the Orioles are third in the East and on the cusp of the two wild-card spots in 2013.

Davis, whose career-high 36 homers lead the majors, has one in three straight games while going 4 for 10 during that span. He was 1 for 24 with a home run prior to that stretch.

He's hit .419 (13 for 31) with five home runs, four doubles and 10 RBIs in his last nine versus Toronto.

Jones, who also homered in Friday's 8-5 win, is batting .327 with six of his 18 homers and 10 RBIs in 12 games against the Blue Jays in 2013.

Scott Feldman (0-1, 7.15) tries a third time to post his first victory as an Oriole while looking to bounce back after he was charged with five of the seven runs he allowed in the sixth inning of an 8-5 loss to Texas on Monday - his first home start since being acquired from the Chicago Cubs.

"Got to go back and look at the tape and see what kind of adjustments I need to make for next time," Feldman told the Orioles' official website.

The right-hander is 0-4 with a 5.45 ERA in six starts against the Blue Jays, but has not made one since 2010.

Preview: Reds (52-42) at Braves (54-40)
Game: 4
Venue: Turner Field
Date: July 14, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

No Justin Upton. No B.J. Upton. No Jason Heyward.

No problem.

After winning without any of their injured big-name outfielders, the Atlanta Braves will again be shorthanded Sunday as they conclude a four-game home set against the slumping Cincinnati Reds.

One night after Heyward exited Thursday's 6-5 win with a strained right hamstring, the Upton brothers were hurt Friday in a 4-2 defeat. While all three were held out Saturday, the Braves (54-40) beat Cincinnati 5-2 behind Mike Minor's seven strong innings and homers from Brian McCann and Dan Uggla.

"I think Vegas lost a lot of money today when they saw our lineup," said manager Fredi Gonzalez, whose club improved to a major league-best 31-14 at home. "But you know what, you can't judge and you can't handicap heart."

Called up from Triple-A Gwinnett earlier in the day, Jose Constanza started in left field and hit leadoff, Reed Johnson was in center and rookie Joey Terdoslavich was in right. The trio went a combined 7 for 11 with an RBI and two runs.

Heyward, Justin Upton (strained calf) and B.J. Upton (strained adductor muscle) are all expected to remain out through the All-Star break. While Heyward could return afterward, the Uptons' status is uncertain.

"I feel bad for them to be hurt," Constanza said through a translator. "It's a bad way to be called up, but I was ready to come up here and help the team win."

Saturday's loss was the fifth in seven games for the Reds (52-42), who have dropped 11 of 15 on the road while hitting .190 with runners in scoring position.

"It's disheartening to see it happening over and over again," manager Dusty Baker said.

Shin-Soo Choo is batting .413 with nine runs during an 11-game hitting streak. Joey Votto, though, has gone 6 for 26 (.231) with no homers and one RBI over an eight-game stretch, and Jay Bruce, who hasn't homered since June 22, is 8 for his last 40 (.200).

Things aren't about to get any easier with a matchup against Julio Teheran (7-4, 3.09 ERA), who ranks among the major league leaders with a 2.36 ERA since April 23. The 22-year-old right-hander yielded four runs - one earned - and seven hits in 7 1-3 innings Tuesday in a 6-4 win at Miami.

"He gave us a great outing," manager Fredi Gonzalez said of Teheran, who is 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA over his last four home starts.

Teheran will be making his first appearance versus Cincinnati, which counters with an impressive young pitcher of its own in Tony Cingrani (3-1, 3.30). The 24-year-old left-hander has posted a .196 opponent batting average and struck out 61 in nine starts spanning 52 2-3 innings.

Cingrani, who has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of those outings, gave up two and three hits over seven innings Tuesday in a 2-0 loss at Milwaukee.

"It's frustrating. I thought I did my job," Cingrani said after striking out 10 and walking two.

He has compiled a 3.75 ERA on the road, more than a run higher than his home mark of 2.63. He has never faced Atlanta.

Cingrani could have his hands full with McCann, who is batting .414 with six homers in his last nine home games in the series.

The Braves have taken seven of 10 from the Reds at Turner Field.

Preview: White Sox (37-54) at Phillies (47-48)
Game: 3
Venue: Citizens Bank Park
Date: July 14, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

Cole Hamels is a three-time All-Star, and he's finally starting to pitch like one again.

Hamels attempts to win a third straight start and help the Philadelphia Phillies head into the break with a .500 record by beating the last-place Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

Hamels (4-11, 4.17 ERA) set career highs with 17 wins and 216 strikeouts last year, but he's failed to build on that in 2013. The left-hander has already tied his career high in losses, set in 2009 and matched the following year.

Recently, he's looked more like the pitcher that's recorded double-digit victories each of the last six seasons. He's won back-to-back starts, yielding two earned runs and 11 hits over 15 innings while walking one and striking out 12.

Hamels had perhaps his best outing of the season Tuesday, allowing one run and pitching out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam to complete the eighth inning in a 4-2 win over Washington.

Getting consistency from Hamels would give the Phillies (47-48) a strong 1-2 punch in the rotation with All-Star Cliff Lee. It may also re-establish them as a viable contender in the NL East.

"That would mean that we definitely have a chance to win two games in a series," Charlie Manuel told the team's official website. "That's what that means. And I'd get my regular sleep."

Hamels earned a 7-3 win in his only career meeting with the White Sox (37-54) on June 12, 2007.

Michael Young's two-out, walkoff single gave the Phillies a 2-1 win over Chicago on Saturday after dropping the opener of the doubleheader 5-4.

Young had four hits in the twin bill, and he's batting .400 with four doubles and six RBIs over the past eight games. However, he's 0 for 3 versus Jose Quintana, the White Sox's scheduled starter.

Young's production may be even more important after center fielder Ben Revere broke his right foot on a foul ball before grounding into a double play to end the first game Saturday.

Revere has a .431 average over his last 15 games, managing at least one hit in 14 of them.

"It's tough," Manuel said. "I couldn't believe it."

The White Sox look to head into the break with four wins in six games, and Gordon Beckham's hot bat could help them achieve that.

He's hitting .396 over the past 12 games, despite going 0 for 5 in Saturday's nightcap. He had a single, triple and scored a run in the opener of this three-game series.

Quintana (4-2, 3.67) is trying to win back-to-back starts for the first time since April.

The left-hander, who is facing the Phillies for the first time, allowed three runs and two homers over a season-high eight innings of Tuesday's 11-4 win at Detroit. He hadn't won on the road since April 17 at Toronto.

Quintana is 1-1 with a 1.65 ERA in four career interleague starts. However, that defeat came May 27 against the Cubs, who reached him for four runs in six innings of a 7-0 win.

Preview: Astros (33-60) at Rays (54-41)
Game: 3
Venue: Tropicana Field
Date: July 14, 2013 1:40 PM EDT

The quality starts keep coming for the Tampa Bay Rays - and so do the victories.

Chris Archer looks to keep that trend going for Tampa Bay as it tries to close the season's first half with another win over the Houston Astros at Tropicana Field on Sunday.

The Rays (54-41) won for the 13th time in 15 games Saturday, 4-3, as Roberto Hernandez provided the club with its 14th straight quality start. Tampa Bay starters have posted a pedestrian 4.02 ERA this season, but they've compiled a 2.09 mark in the last 14 contests.

Archer (3-3, 3.59 ERA) is responsible for two of those 14 quality starts, giving up a combined three runs and five hits in 12 innings. He notched a victory in Tuesday's 4-1 win over Minnesota and issued no walks for the first time in 14 major league games (12 starts).

The right-hander averaged 5.2 walks per nine innings in seven previous starts this season.

"It felt good to have good stuff and to be able to harness it," he told the team's official website.

He walked three while also allowing two runs in six innings but didn't get a decision in a 7-5 win in Houston on July 4.

Houston (33-60) will counter with Erik Bedard (3-5, 4.67), whose 23 starts and 11 wins against the Rays are his most against any team. He has lost the last three, however, including an 8-0 defeat on July 2 when he gave up four runs and walked a career-worst six in 5 1-3 innings. He had gone 3-1 with a 3.23 ERA in nine starts prior to that game.

Bedard's control didn't improve much since last facing Tampa Bay as he issued five walks and allowed five runs over 6 1-3 innings in a 5-4 loss at Texas last Sunday.

"I thought that Erik did a great job just battling through all the conditions in which he battled through to go 6 1-3 and give us the outing that he gave us," manager Bo Porter told the club's official website.

Pitching around Luke Scott may not be a bad idea after the designated hitter was 2 for 4 with a home run Saturday, improving to 14 for 32 (.438) over a nine-game hitting streak with eight RBIs. He's 2 for 4 against Bedard.

"I've had some moments in my career like this and even better, where the baseball slows down for me and the swing feels good and I'm not missing the pitches I've been getting to hit," said Scott, who has three homers during his run. "It's familiar territory, but it's been a long time and I'm enjoying it."

Wil Myers is also 7 for 15 over his last four games, but Evan Longoria's troubles continued with an 0-for 4 performance. Longoria is 4 for 40 in his last 11 contests, dropping his average 24 points to .277.

Jose Altuve was 1 for 4 and scored a run in his first game since the Astros announced his contract extension through 2017, including team options for 2018 and 2019.

"Jose has quickly become the face of the franchise is less than two years, and we are excited to keep him here for many years to come," general manager Jeff Luhnow said of the second baseman, who has hit .284 with 61 steals in 291 games since debuting for Houston on July 20, 2011.

The 40-year-old Bartolo Colon has been sensational in his 16th big league campaign.

He appears to be just as surprised as the rest of us.

Colon caps off a remarkable first half Sunday as the Oakland Athletics conclude a three-game set against the visiting Boston Red Sox in a matchup of division leaders.

Colon (12-3, 2.69 ERA) has been especially good over his last 10 starts, going 9-1 with a 1.48 ERA to climb within one win of tying Matt Moore and Max Scherzer for the most in the majors. He received his third All-Star nod, with the previous two coming in 1998 and 2005.

"I've never had a year like this," Colon, who also won the AL Cy Young Award in 2005, told MLB's official website. "I believe this year is my best year. It was always in my thoughts, but I never imagined having the kind of numbers that I do right now before the All-Star break."

Third in the AL in ERA, Colon outpitched fellow All-Star Jeff Locke in Monday's 2-1 win at Pittsburgh. The right-hander allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings.

"He probably has one of the best personalities I've ever played with," center fielder Coco Crisp said. "He just goes about his day and does the best he can and doesn't let too many things bother him. He's been doing good for us the whole year and is fun to play behind."

Colon, Oakland's lone All-Star representative, still has a chance to pitch in Tuesday's Mid-summer Classic despite starting Sunday.

"As an organization, based on his age and where we are with him and how much we lean on him, that we would like him to get the time off," manager Bob Melvin said. "Pitching on Sunday, you look at it and say, 'Is that prudent?' But we'll leave it up to him. It's his decision."

Colon went the distance in a rain-shortened 13-0 win at Boston on April 23, striking out seven over seven innings of three-hit ball. He is 1-1 with a 1.90 ERA in four starts against the Red Sox since 2011.

Colon has had David Ortiz's number over the years, holding him to six hits in 46 at_bats (.130) in their matchups. Dustin Pedroia (2 for 13) and Jacoby Ellsbury (2 for 9) also have struggled.

After taking Friday's opener 4-2, the Red Sox (58-38) saw their four-game winning streak snapped Saturday with a 3-0 defeat. They couldn't come through against A.J. Griffin, who threw eight innings before Grant Balfour recorded his team-record 43rd consecutive save.

"I just tried to act like number 40 in situations like that," said Griffin, who worked his way out of a pair of two-on, two-out jams. "That's something I've learned a lot just watching Bartolo pitch."

Oakland (55-39), which is a major league-best 19-5 at home since May 17, has 55 victories before the All-Star break for the first time since 1975.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, give the ball to Brandon Workman (0-0, 13.50) for his first major league start. The right-hander surrendered three runs in two innings of relief in his big league debut Wednesday in an 11-4 win at Seattle.

Workman went 3-1 with a 2.80 ERA in six starts with Triple-A Pawtucket before getting called up Tuesday.

"We know he's going to throw strikes, that's the one thing he's proven over his minor league career," manager John Farrell said of Workman, Boston's minor league pitcher of the year last season. "We're looking forward to seeing him in the starter's role."

Preview: Angels (44-48) at Mariners (42-52)
Game: 3
Venue: Safeco Field
Date: July 14, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

Struggling Seattle Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma can only hope his past form against the Los Angeles Angels helps him break out of a five-start winless run.

Joe Blanton may be tied for the major league lead in losses, but he's pitched better over his last five outings than Iwakuma has in the same span.

Both starters allowed six runs in shaky efforts their last time out and will meet Sunday when the Mariners try for their first three-game home sweep of the Angels in eight seasons.

Iwakuma (7-4, 2.97 ERA) has been close to or at the top of the AL in ERA through most of the season while Blanton (2-11, 5.40) owns the majors' third-worst ERA. Yet this may not be the pitching mismatch it appears to be based on that alone.

Iwakuma is 0-3 with a 6.83 ERA over his last five outings. The six runs allowed by the All-Star on Tuesday came in the shortest start of his career, a three-inning stint in which he escaped without a decision in an 11-8 loss to Boston.

"I think my pitches are catching too much of the plate the last couple of starts," Iwakuma said through a translator. "I need to work on that."

Blanton lasted five-plus innings in Tuesday's 7-2 defeat to the Chicago Cubs. His ERA in his last five starts is 4.26.

"It was just one of those games," said Blanton, who had a 3.04 ERA over his previous four starts. "I tried to battle through, but I made too many mistakes over the plate."

The right-hander allowed a season-worst four homers and has given up a major league-high 22.

He'll be up against a Seattle team that has homered five times in this series to extend its club record for consecutive games with at least one to 21. That's the longest by an AL team since Texas set the major league record with 27 straight in 2002.

"Everybody has been busting our chops on offense and rightfully so but I think you've got to give these kids kudos for that," manager Eric Wedge said.

Blanton is 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA in two 2013 starts against the Mariners.

Seattle (42-52) last swept three at home from Los Angeles (44-48) from Sept. 12-14, 2005. The Mariners have to like their chances if Iwakuma can duplicate his past results against the Angels.

Iwakuma has beaten Los Angeles more than any team, going 4-0 with a 1.11 ERA in five starts. He has struck out 22 and never allowed an earned run in 19 1-3 innings at home versus the Angels.

Albert Pujols is 2 for 16 against the right-hander, Mike Trout is 2 for 15, Erick Aybar 2 for 10 and Josh Hamilton 2 for 9. Pujols and Trout have each struck out five times versus Iwakuma.

Pujols is 3 for 23 at Safeco Field this year and Hamilton is 4 for 24. Neither has gone deep.

The Mariners, meanwhile, have outhomered the Angels 10-3 in winning five of six at home. Raul Ibanez is 5 for 8 with two homers in this series.

Justin Smoak had the game's only homer Saturday and drove in four runs in a 6-0 victory.

Preview: Rockies (45-50) at Dodgers (47-46)
Game: 4
Venue: Dodger Stadium
Date: July 14, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

Ricky Nolasco was raised less than an hour from Dodger Stadium. Now, he gets the chance to pitch there for the team he grew up supporting.

The right-hander looks to build on a strong Los Angeles debut when he makes the first home start for his new club Sunday against the Colorado Rockies.

One exciting aspect of last weekend's four-player deal that sent Nolasco (6-8, 3.70 ERA) from Miami to Los Angeles (47-46) was that the southern California native can regularly pitch at Chavez Ravine.

"I couldn't be more excited to play in front of my family and friends in Dodger Stadium during this season and hopefully for many more seasons to come," said Nolasco, who grew up in nearby Corona

Though he went 0-1 with an 8.18 ERA in two starts at Dodger Stadium for the Marlins, Nolasco hopes his first Los Angles home start goes as well as his debut Tuesday. He gave up a run and four hits in seven innings of a 6-1 victory at Arizona.

"I was pretty pumped up,' said Nolasco, who also had two hits with an RBI. "I haven't been that locked in a long time. It worked out great. I was able to make good pitches. I was definitely excited. The energy and adrenaline was going those first few innings, so it was awesome.'

Owner of a 6-2 record and 4.75 ERA as a starter against the Rockies (45-50), Nolasco tries to follow up teammate Zack Greinke's stellar two-hitter from Saturday's 1-0 victory.

Greinke allowed singles to Jonathan Herrera and Todd Helton and struck out nine to win his fifth straight start and remain undefeated at Dodger Stadium. Hanley Ramirez had one of Los Angeles' four hits off Tyler Chatwood and drove in the lone run on a groundout in the first.

The Dodgers won for the 17th time in 21 games minus star rookie Yasiel Puig, who could miss a second straight contest with a sore hip. Puig is batting .392 with eight homers and 19 RBIs in 37 games.

"He has some tightness in that area and we just don't want to take any chances with him," manager Don Mattingly told the Dodgers' official website. "We'll see how he is (Sunday)."

Ramirez has hit .441 with 22 RBIs in his last 25 games but is 0 for 5 versus scheduled Colorado starter Jhoulys Chacin (8-4, 3.62), who is 1-0 despite posting a 6.94 ERA in two starts versus Los Angeles this year.

The right-hander's five-start winning streak ended Tuesday even though he allowed a run and five hits in six innings of a 2-1 loss at San Diego.

"It's been that way with him a lot this year,' manager Walt Weiss said about Chacin, who has a 2.01 ERA in the last six starts. "He gave up some soft hits again. It was good to see him minimize the damage.'

Chatwood pitched eight strong innings but received no support from the Rockies, who have averaged 1.8 runs while going 3-6 on this 10-game trip.

"That was definitely a tough one,' Chatwood said. "I threw the ball (well Saturday), but that's just how it goes."

Helton has batted .429 in his last 13 games against the Dodgers, and is 6 for 15 versus Nolasco.

Preview: Giants (43-50) at Padres (41-54)
Game: 4
Venue: PETCO Park
Date: July 14, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

A four-game set with the San Diego Padres has the San Francisco Giants getting untracked heading into the All-Star break.

They've added some history along the way.

The Giants try to build on Tim Lincecum's no-hitter as they look to sweep this series with the spiraling Padres on Sunday.

San Francisco (43-50) has won the first three games of this series, matching its total over the previous 19 contests.

The Giants' recent turnaround at the expense of the Padres (41-54) showed few signs of slowing down Saturday, when Lincecum tossed his first no-hitter in a 9-0 victory.

"I felt fine out there from the first pitch," said Lincecum, who threw 148 pitches - the most by a Giant since 1988. "Maybe a little sweaty, but other than that, I felt great."

San Francisco may be hoping Barry Zito (4-6, 4.62 ERA) can draw some inspiration from Lincecum's performance as he takes the mound in the finale.

The Giants would also settle for just a victory since Zito is 0-5 with a 9.38 ERA in seven road starts. The veteran left-hander hasn't won overall since beating Oakland on May 30, going 0-3 with a 5.32 ERA in his last seven.

Zito struggled again Tuesday, surrendering five runs with four walks in six innings while not getting a decision in a 10-6 loss to the New York Mets.

A visit to Petco Park doesn't seem to be ideal for Zito. He's 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in seven starts there since a win on Aug. 2, 2008.

Zito, though, may benefit from continued production from the offense, which is batting .333 with 23 runs in this series.

The Giants have also won five in a row over San Diego for their longest winning streak in the series since reeling off six in a row in 2006. That run also includes San Francisco's last four-game sweep at Petco Park, from Aug. 14-17.

Buster Posey could play a role in matching that stretch. The two-time All-Star catcher has seven hits and six RBIs in this series, and is batting .388 in 20 games at Petco for the best average by any player with at least 80 at_bats there.

He's 16 for 31 with nine RBIs and seven runs in his last eight visits, and he's 6 for 12 with a homer and two doubles off scheduled starter Eric Stults.

The Padres will enter the break as occupants of the NL West cellar, thanks in large part to losing 14 of their past 15 games.

Stults (7-7, 3.50) got the only win in that stretch, and that came in dominant fashion.

The left-hander tossed a four-hitter in a 2-1 win over Colorado on Tuesday - his second complete game in just over three weeks.

"I hadn't had that high a pitch count (122) in a long time," Stults said, "but I was sharp with most of my pitches."

Stults is 4-3 with a 5.40 ERA in 12 career starts versus the Giants, and he's 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in three this season.

Preview: Brewers (37-56) at Diamondbacks (50-44)
Game: 4
Venue: Chase Field
Date: July 14, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

Mired deep in the NL Central cellar, the Milwaukee Brewers haven't had too much to get excited about in the first half of this season.

Wily Peralta's recent performances are a pleasant exception.

In his team's final game before the All-Star break, the right-hander will seek to extend a considerable scoreless streak and help the Brewers avoid their first four-game sweep to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Milwaukee will enter the break no closer than 4 1/2 games behind the fourth-place Chicago Cubs in the Central after enduring its 13th loss in 18 games Saturday. The Brewers (37-56) blew a three-run lead in a 5-4 defeat to Arizona, their franchise-worst sixth straight in the series.

Didi Gregorius, meanwhile, helped the Diamondbacks (50-44) maintain their 2 1/2-game lead in the NL West and reach 50 wins before the All-Star break for the first time since 2003. The shortstop hit one of the team's three solo homers and drove in the tying run in the seventh inning.

"I see this every day," Gregorius said. "We never back down. We fight hard. We never give up."

Peralta (6-9, 4.82 ERA) will try to end his team's four-game skid and send Arizona to just its fourth loss in 12 contests by adding to his scoreless streak of 15 1-3 innings.

The right-hander has kept opponents off the scoreboard in three of his last four outings, going 2-1 with a 1.03 ERA. His latest performance, a 2-0 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday, was the best in his fledgling career.

Peralta tossed a three-hitter with a career high-tying six strikeouts for the Brewers' first complete game since April 5, 2011, a span of 407 games that the team said was the longest drought in major league history.

"If you watched him move around, he was confident," manager Ron Roenicke told the team's website. "You can see it in his body language. I think that in the long run, a game like that can carry him a long way."

In his first appearance against Arizona, Peralta will try to maintain that confidence while pitching opposite Ian Kennedy (3-5, 5.31).

The Arizona right-hander is 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA in his last six starts but has allowed two runs or fewer in three of those games. His latest start Tuesday wasn't one of those solid efforts as he gave up six runs and nine hits over 5 2-3 innings in a 6-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Diamondbacks have hardly helped Kennedy, the owner of a combined 36 wins the past two seasons, by giving him a combined nine runs of support during his winless stretch.

Kennedy did not receive a decision in his only matchup with the Brewers this season. He allowed four runs over six innings in an 8-7 win in 11 innings April 7 and had a chance at a victory until the Arizona bullpen gave up two runs in the ninth.

It's unknown if the Brewers will activate Ryan Braun off the bereavement list in time for this game. He's already missed the required three contests and can sit out no more than seven in a row.

Preview: Cardinals (56-36) at Cubs (42-50)
Game: 4
Venue: Wrigley Field
Date: July 14, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

Because he's pitching Sunday night, Adam Wainwright likely won't play in the All-Star game. That start, though, gives the St. Louis Cardinals right-hander the chance to end the first half as the NL's only 13-game winner.

While seeking that victory and his first against the Chicago Cubs in nearly three years, Wainwright will also try to help St. Louis regain sole possession of the NL Central lead before the break.

The Cardinals (56-36) changed their pitching schedule to give Wainwright two starts before the end of the first half, but starting Sunday will at least limit him in Tuesday's Mid-summer classic at New York's Citi Field. The latest collective bargaining agreement gives pitchers who start on Sunday the option of throwing in the All-Star game but no more than one inning.

Wainwright (12-5, 2.30 ERA) has said he would ideally like to give his spot to Cardinals closer Edward Mujica. Should he choose to opt out, however, the choice of his replacement would fall to San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy.

"I don't think you can make a (final) decision on it until we see what happens (Sunday)," Wainwright told the team's website. "I mean, if the game were to get rained out and I backed out for no reason that would be silly. But if I pitch (Sunday), then I would probably forgo the chance to pitch in the All-Star game to allow for some rest."

First, Wainwright will try to break a tie with Washington's Jordan Zimmermann for the NL wins lead. He matched Zimmermann's victory total by allowing one run over seven innings and striking out nine in a 9-5 victory against Houston on Tuesday.

Since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2011, Wainwright is 0-2 with a 5.90 ERA in five starts against the Cubs (42-50). He gave up four runs over seven innings in his only matchup this season, a 4-2 loss June 18.

Wainwright's last win against Chicago was on Sept. 24, 2010, and Travis Wood (6-6, 2.69) will try to help prevent him from earning another.

Wood, the Cubs' lone All-Star, faces the same decision as Wainwright.

"It's going to be a (side session day) anyway. I've got no problem with him pitching one inning, or 20 pitches. He goes all out on his side days anyways," manager Dale Sveum told the team's website.

In his final start of the first half, Wood will try to build on his first win since May 30. The left-hander gave up two runs over 6 2-3 innings in a 7-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. He got six runs of support after receiving a combined nine in his previous six outings.

Wood has split his two starts against the Cardinals this season. He gave up one run over 6 2-3 innings in a 2-1 victory at Wrigley Field on May 7, and allowed four runs in seven innings in a 5-2 road loss June 17.

St. Louis will try to hand him another defeat while attempting to move back in front of Pittsburgh in the NL Central.

The Cubs are trying to end the first half with a 12th win in 18 games.

Chicago also has a chance to win the four-game series over its archrivals after claiming a 6-4 victory Saturday. Alfonso Soriano hit his ninth homer in 15 games, and Luis Valbuena had a key two-run shot in the fourth inning.

Neither Matt Holliday (hamstring) nor All-Star catcher Yadier Molina (right knee) were in the starting lineup Saturday, although Molina entered in the eighth inning.

Preview: Rays (55-41) at Blue Jays (45-49)
Game: 2
Venue: Rogers Centre
Date: July 20, 2013 1:07 PM EDT

The Tampa Bay Rays showed no signs of slowing down in their first game after the All-Star break, relying on a power surge as they picked right up where they left off.

After tying a season high with four home runs, they'll seek their 16th win in 18 games when they face the host Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.

Four Rays homered in an 8-5 victory Friday, one of them being Wil Myers, who finished with three hits to make him 7 for his last 13.

Kelly Johnson also homered and is 5 for his last 8 with four runs, while Ben Zobrist, who came in batting .180 in July with one home run, had a third-inning shot among his three hits.

``We were playing the best ball we had up to this point of the year leading up to the All-Star break,' left-hander David Price said. "To have that four-day break, you don't want it to mess up the momentum that the team has and just the winning feeling we have in the clubhouse and in the dugout. That was a big win for us tonight. We hit on all cylinders.'

Tampa Bay's hitters took advantage of a Toronto team that has struggled to keep the ball in the park at Rogers Centre. The Blue Jays (45-50) have given up 77 home runs at home, the highest total in baseball.

In contrast, the Rays (56-41) have been led by superb pitching during their hot streak, posting a 2.09 ERA in the past 17 games.

Jeremy Hellickson (8-3, 4.67 ERA) is one of the Tampa Bay pitchers that has been on a roll, going 4-0 with a 1.97 ERA in his last five starts. The right-hander allowed 12 home runs in his first 11 starts but has given up three in his last eight.

"I don't think it's confidence in myself; it's confidence in throwing a fastball down and away 2-1," Hellickson told the Rays' official website. "Earlier in the year, I would have bounced a changeup. I just have a lot of confidence in my fastball right now."

The right-hander was unable to win a career-high fifth straight start in a 4-3 victory over Minnesota on July 10. He surrendered three runs and struck out eight in six innings.

Hellickson has a 2.25 ERA in three starts against Toronto this year, including a 4-1 win June 24 in which he allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings.

Mark Buehrle (5-6, 4.89), in contrast, is coming off his worst start of the season, allowing a season-high eight runs - three homers - in an 8-5 loss at Baltimore on July 12.

"What do you do? You've just got to get ready for the next start," Buehrle said.

The left-hander, who has a 6.44 ERA on the road, will try to rebound at home, where he is 4-1 with a 3.30 mark.

Tampa Bay's bullpen has posted a 0.81 ERA in the last seven games. Joel Peralta has pitched 5 1-3 straight scoreless innings in that stretch, allowing a hit and a walk, while Fernando Rodney has not allowed a run in 12 appearances and has converted 13 saves in a row.

Toronto slugger Jose Bautista is in a 4-for-37 (.108) slump but ended an eight-game home run drought Friday.

Preview: Athletics (56-40) at Angels (45-49)
Game: 2
Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Date: July 20, 2013 9:05 PM EDT

C.J. Wilson has his sights set on starting the second half the same way he ended the first - in dominant fashion.

The potential absence of Yoenis Cespedes could make things a little easier for Wilson as he seeks his sixth victory in seven starts when the Los Angeles Angels host the Oakland Athletics on Saturday night.

Wilson (9-6, 3.37 ERA) went 5-1 in his last six outings prior to the All-Star break, posting a 2.04 ERA over that stretch.

The left-hander has also been outstanding against division foes, posting a 6-2 record and 2.43 ERA in nine starts, including two against Oakland. He didn't record a decision in a 9-5 loss to the A's on April 9, allowing four runs in six innings, but won 5-4 at Oakland on May 1 after limiting the A's to two runs in 6 1-3 innings.

Wilson would love to see his team put together another big offensive output after it gave him 12 runs of support in his last start, matching his career high. He held the Chicago Cubs to one run and four hits over seven innings of a 13-2 road win July 10.

"Offense is kind of a streaky thing sometimes," Wilson said. "You have instances where you score 13 runs, which is kind of a fluke no matter how good your offense is. I feel like our offense is capable of scoring six runs a night."

Wilson might not need that many if Oakland (56-40) is again without Cespedes, who sat out Friday's 4-1 loss. The Home Run Derby winner was a late scratch due to a sore left wrist and was replaced by Chris Young, who went 1 for 4 with an RBI double in the ninth.

"It came up (Friday) in batting practice," manager Bob Melvin said of the injury. "When he was taking some swings in the cage, he still felt it, so we pulled him out."

Melvin said he didn't think it was related to the home run contest, and he won't know until Saturday if Cespedes can play.

Cespedes' .364 average versus Wilson is the highest by any current Oakland player with more than three at_bats against him.

Mike Trout, who entered the break batting .397 with 13 RBIs over his last 16 games, was one of three Angels to connect for a solo homer Friday, joining Albert Pujols and Erick Aybar. Pujols had been without an extra-base hit in his previous eight home games.

Trout will try to stay hot for the Angels (45-49) against Oakland's Dan Straily (6-2, 4.28), who is 1-0 with a 7.88 ERA in three starts versus Los Angeles. Trout is 5 for 10 off of him.

Straily also entered the break on a high note, however, winning his last two starts while yielding a run and three hits over 13 1-3 innings. He was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento following his last start - in which he threw 6 1-3 innings in a 2-1 win at Pittsburgh on July 9 - as Oakland temporarily didn't need a fifth starter because of a scheduling oddity.

"I could have thrown a perfect game and I was going to get optioned out," Straily said. "It's nothing personal. It's the situation we're in. It is what it is.'

Despite Friday's defeat, Oakland has won 10 of 13 at Angel Stadium. The A's, though, have scored 13 runs in their last seven games.
