Thursday Tips
December 12, 2012
All three matchups on the Thursday NBA card involve mismatches according to record. The Hawks (12-6) battle the struggling Bobcats (7-13) for the third time this season, while the Spurs (18-4) play the second of a back-to-back in Portland against the inconsistent Blazers (9-12). In the primetime TNT matchup at 8:00, the Lakers (9-13) try to bounce out of their funk when they travel to the Madison Square Garden.
Lakers at Knicks - 8:00 PM EST
New York is a perfect 8-0 straight-up at home this season, as the Knicks (16-5) go for their ninth win in 10 games overall on Thursday. Mike Woodson's team welcomes in a Lakers' squad that can't get out of their way recently, dropping five of their past six games, including an embarrassing loss at Cleveland on Tuesday night.
The Lakers played their fifth straight game without power forward Pau Gasol as Los Angeles trailed from the start in a 100-94 setback to the Cavs. L.A. closed as a 6 ½-point favorite, but fell to 2-7 SU and 3-6 ATS away from Staples Center this season. Since Mike D'Antoni has taken over as head coach, the Lakers own a 4-8 record, while allowing at least 100 points in six of the last seven contests. The Lakers have compiled a dreadful 1-5 ATS record as an underdog this season, as the lone cover came in a 114-108 loss at Oklahoma City last Friday as 7 ½-point 'dogs.
The Knicks overcame a 17-point deficit to shock the rival Nets on Tuesday, 100-97 in their second visit to the Barclays Center in three weeks. New York failed to cover as 3 ½-point 'chalk,' falling to 1-5 ATS the last six opportunities as a road favorite. The story changes when the Knicks suit up at Madison Square Garden, posting a 7-1 ATS record with the lone non-cover coming as 11-point favorites against Phoenix on December 2. Since starting 4-0 to the 'under' at home, the Knicks have compiled four straight 'overs' in Manhattan, while busting the 100-point mark seven times.
The two teams split a pair of meetings during the lockout-shortened season of 2012, with the home team winning each time. The Lakers routed the Knicks at Staples Center, 99-82 as 4 ½-point favorites in late December, while New York exacted revenge with a 92-85 triumph at MSG as 4 ½-point 'dogs six weeks later.
Spurs at Blazers - 10:35 PM EST
The league office better be on alert as San Antonio is playing on a back-to-back on TNT. The last time the Spurs were in this situation, Gregg Popovich decided to send Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, and Manu Ginobili home prior to a game at Miami in which San Antonio was playing its fourth game in five nights. This is the final game of a four-game road trip for the Spurs, who have already won once at the Rose Garden this season.
Playing without Parker, the Spurs rallied for a 112-109 victory on November 10 to cover as 2 ½-point favorites. San Antonio outscored Portland, 39-30 in the final quarter as Gary Neal scored 27 points off the bench to help the Spurs overcome 10 three-pointers by the Blazers. The win ended a four-game losing skid at the Rose Garden for San Antonio, which includes a 137-97 beatdown by the Blazers last season with Parker, Duncan, and Ginobili out.
Portland continues a season-high six-game homestand following a loss to Sacramento and victory over Toronto. Terry Stotts' club put together their best defensive performance of the season in a 92-74 rout of the Raptors on Monday, holding Toronto to 35% shooting from the floor. The most impressive part of Portland's triumph is debatable since the Blazers won without Nicholas Batum and Wesley Matthews, while also managing the victory by shooting 0-for-20 from three-point range.
From an ATS standpoint, the Blazers are just 3-6 ATS the last nine games, while cashing two of three times as a home 'dog. The Spurs have cashed in 10 of their past 11 road contests, while eclipsing the 100-point mark eight straight times on the highway. Probably the most impressive number is the frequency of 'overs' in this stretch, as San Antonio is 8-0 to the 'over' in the last eight away games.
Bobcats at Hawks - 7:35 PM EST
We didn't exactly save the worst for last, but somebody has to be the final one to be picked. Atlanta returns home from a three-game road trip as the Hawks go for their third win of the season over the Bobcats. Charlotte is quickly reverting back to last season's disaster following a surprising 7-5 start by dropping eight consecutive games.
The Bobcats have won just two of seven contests away from Time Warner Cable Arena, beating the Timberwolves and Wizards as road 'dogs. Charlotte's defense is getting shredded by the day, as the Bobcats have allowed at least 100 points in nine of the last 10 games. The 'over' is hitting for the Bobcats lately, going 8-3-1 the previous 12 contests.
The Hawks enter Thursday's contest with an 0-6-1 ATS record at Philips Arena when laying at least four points. Atlanta barely covered in its last meeting with Charlotte, a 94-91 victory as nine-point favorites in late November. Larry Drew's club is a perfect 3-0 SU/ATS with no rest coming off Wednesday's game at Orlando, including road wins at Portland and Memphis.

NBA TNT doubleheader: Lakers at Knicks, Spurs at Blazers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Los Angeles Lakers at New York Knicks (-7, 208.5)
Watching a team struggle badly under coach Mike D'Antoni is not an unfamiliar site for New York fans. When the Los Angeles Lakers stumble into Madison Square Garden on Thursday to face the Knicks, it will be exactly nine months since D'Antoni was fired by New York. The Lakers and D'Antoni are riding a three-game losing streak as they prepare for the matchup against the league's only unbeaten team at home. Los Angeles has lost eight of its last 11. ''It doesn't make any sense," Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant said. "We're still finding ways to lose games.''
The Knicks, on the other hand, keep finding ways to win games. New York erased an early 17-point deficit to eke out a 100-97 win at Brooklyn on Tuesday night in a budding rivalry becoming known as the Battle of the Boroughs. Carmelo Anthony erupted for a season-high 45 points to carry the Knicks to their seventh win in eight games. New York has registered 11 of its 16 wins by double digits, including a pair of 20-point demolitions of the defending world champion Miami Heat.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT
ABOUT THE LAKERS (9-13, 9-13 ATS): Los Angeles is searching for answers after tumbling to 4-8 since D'Antoni took the coaching reins. Bryant termed the recent struggles as the most "challenging" and "baffling" stretch of his storied career. With forward Pau Gasol missing his fifth straight game, the Lakers fell behind by 15 points at halftime against a Cleveland squad that entered the game with four wins. Bryant scored a season-high 42 points against the Cavaliers and has averaged 35.5 points in his last six games - a stretch in which the Lakers have gone 1-5.
ABOUT THE KNICKS (16-5, 13-8 ATS): Anthony is having an MVP campaign, pouring in 79 points in his last two games after sitting out the previous two due to a cut on his finger. Yet New York is also getting timely production from veteran guard Jason Kidd since he returned from a four-game injury absence. Kidd buried the winning 3-point shot against the Nets and finished with 18 points on 6-of-8 from behind the arc. That followed a 17-point performance against Denver in which Kidd connected on 3 of 4 from long range to go along with seven assists.
TRENDS:
* Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
* Lakers are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. Anthony sat out last February's 92-85 win over the Lakers that snapped a string of nine straight losses in the series.
2. Los Angeles is 1-10 when Bryant scores at least 30 points.
3. D'Antoni compiled a 121-167 record in three-plus seasons with the Knicks.
San Antonio Spurs at Portland Trail Blazers (+5.5, 201)
The San Antonio Spurs will look to rebound from a rare loss when they wrap up a four-game road trip Thursday against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Spurs had their five-game winning streak snapped in Utah on Wednesday on a 3-point buzzer beater by Mo Williams. It was an uncharacteristic defeat for San Antonio, which blew an eight-point lead in the final four minutes to drop one game behind the Oklahoma City Thunder for the league's best record. The Spurs still own the league's best mark away from home at 11-3.
While San Antonio will be playing for the fifth time in seven nights, the Trail Blazers have had a couple of much-needed days off since walloping the Toronto Raptors on Monday. Nicolas Batum, who has been battling a back injury that caused him to miss Monday's game, said his condition has improved and he is hopeful of facing the Spurs. Wesley Matthews also sat out Monday's game with a left hip flexor strain, ending a streak of 250 consecutive games played.
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT
ABOUT THE SPURS (18-5, 15-7-1 ATS): Veteran Tim Duncan had his worst shooting performance of the season in Monday's shootout victory at Houston, connecting on only 1 of 9 shots, but he still managed to pull down 13 rebounds and block three shots. Duncan bounced back from that game with a vengeance, scoring 22 points and hauling down a season-high 21 rebounds against the Jazz. It was the 21st 20-20 game of the future Hall of Famer's career. The perennial All-Star also blocked six shots - another season high.
ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (9-12, 8-12-1 ATS): The return of Batum and/or Matthews would go a long way to preventing a repeat from Monday's dreadful shooting display that set an NBA record for futility. Portland misfired on all 20 3-point attempts, breaking the record set by the New York Knicks (0 for 18) in 2010. Batum has made a team-high 49 3-pointers and has connected on at least one in all but one game. Seldom-used Sasha Pavlovic did a solid job as an emergency starter against Toronto with 10 points, seven boards and five assists in 42 minutes.
TRENDS:
* Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Home team is 15-6 ATS in the last 21 meetings.
* Spurs are 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Portland.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. The Spurs withstood 35 points from Batum to win at Portland 112-109 on Nov. 12.
2. Blazers F LaMarcus Aldridge has four straight double-doubles and is averaging 22.5 points and 11.3 rebounds in that span.
3. San Antonio leads the league in assists per game (25.9). Portland ranks 29th (19.1).

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.
For the week of Dec. 9-Dec. 15
Hottest ATS team
Denver Nuggets – This week: 3-1 ATS, Season: 14-10 ATS
The Nuggets have covered in three straight games and four of their last five. Denver is averaging 101.6 points over its last three contests and is coming off a huge win over Memphis on Friday. The Nuggets hit the road for a date with the Kings on Sunday afternoon before heading back to the friendly confines of the Pepsi Center for a tough matchup with the Spurs on Tuesday.
Coldest ATS team
Los Angeles Lakers – This week: 0-3-1 ATS, Season: 9-14-1 ATS
The Lakers snapped a four-game losing streak Friday with a victory over the lowly Wizards, but the six-point margin of victory was only good enough to earn a push. Los Angeles failed to cover against New York, Cleveland and Utah last week. The Lakers finish off their four-game road swing Sunday in Philadelphia before returning to the Staples Center where the Bobcats will be waiting for them.
Hottest over bet
New York Knicks – This week: 4-0 O/U, Season: 13-8-2 O/U
The Knicks have won four straight, playing over the total in each of those victories. New York is averaging a whopping 107.7 points per game during the over run, but could be slowed in the future due to Carmelo Anthony’s ankle injury. The forward is questionable Monday when the Knicks host the Rockets in the first contest of a four-game homestand.
Hottest under bet
Toronto Raptors – This week: 0-4 O/U, Season: 12-12 O/U
The Raptors have played under the number in four consecutive games and could continue to be a good under play heading into next week. Center Andrea Bargnani (elbow) and guard Kyle Lowry (tricep) both fell to injuries on Dec. 10 at Portland. Both key starters could miss significant time, leaving a gaping hole in the Toronto offense. The Raptors host Houston on Sunday before packing their bags for a short trip to Cleveland for a date with the Cavs.
Scouting the schedule:
-The Charlotte Bobcats suffered their 11th consecutive defeat Saturday night when they fell to the Magic. Charlotte heads out on a west-coast road trip early next week and plays four games in five days. The Bobcats are 3-8 ATS during the losing skid.
-The Minnesota Timberwolves are riding a four-game winning streak, but face some formidable foes next week. The T-Wolves hit the road to take on the Magic and Heat on back-to-back nights. Then square off against Oklahoma City and New York to close out the week.

Spurs at Thunder: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (-4.5, 207)
The Oklahoma City Thunder have been rolling along, having won 10 in a row to seize the best record in the NBA. The Thunder will face a familiar opponent on Monday when they host the San Antonio Spurs, the team which they defeated during last season's Western Conference finals. The Spurs exacted a small measure of revenge with an 86-84 triumph when the teams met on Nov. 1.
The Thunder, who posted a 113-103 win over Sacramento on Friday, enters the contest with a league-best 105.7 scoring average and 9.3 point differential. San Antonio can also score some points, as it showed when it surpassed 130 on two occasions recently. The Spurs didn't reach that total, but secured a comfortable 103-88 victory over Boston on Saturday.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, Fox Sports Southwest (San Antonio), Fox Sports Oklahoma
ABOUT THE SPURS (19-6, 16-8-1 ATS): Tony Parker drained the game-winning 21-footer as time expired when the teams met last month. Tim Duncan had 20 points and eight rebounds, but veteran guard Manu Ginobili missed that contest. As it turns out, Ginobili is doubtful to play on Monday as well. Ginobili suffered a bruised left quad in Saturday's win, prompting coach Gregg Popovich to say on Sunday that "it's hard to believe he'd be ready (for Monday), but I'm not sure."
ABOUT THE THUNDER (19-4, 14-8-1 ATS): Kevin Durant, who scored 31 points on Friday, had a game-high 23 points when Oklahoma City last played San Antonio. The three-time NBA scoring champion is having another brilliant season - with his 27.5 points per game already ahead of his career average. Oklahoma City owns a sparkling 13-2 mark at home, bested only by New York's 10-0 record at Madison Square Garden.
CONSENSUS: Sixty percent of Cover Consensus players are picking the Thunder while 69 percent are on the over.
TRENDS:
* Over is 7-1-1 in the last nine meetings in Oklahoma City.
* Favorite is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
* Home team is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
* Over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.
* Spurs are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings in Oklahoma City.
* Spurs are 0-4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. Oklahoma City will look to match its longest winning streak since November 1996, when the franchise won 11 in a row as the Seattle SuperSonics.
2. San Antonio F Stephen Jackson will miss his 15th consecutive game with a finger injury.
3. Thunder G Russell Westbrook has struggled with his shot over the last two games. Westbrook, who is just 8-for-27, started the month by going 36-for-78.

Celtics at Bulls: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls (-1.5, 181.5)
The Boston Celtics had seen their fortunes improve at the beginning of the month as they started to lock down at the defensive end. That defensive intensity has abandoned the team on the current road trip. The Celtics will be looking to salvage one win on the three-game trip when they finish up at the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday. The Bulls have had no problems on the defensive end. It’s scoring that can be a issue.
Chicago will be playing the second night of a back-to-back after falling at Memphis, 80-71, on Monday. The Bulls had won seven of their previous nine games but had topped 100 points just twice in that span. Boston took a 101-95 decision in Chicago on Nov. 12, marking the beginning of a four-game stretch that saw the Bulls allowing at least 100 points in each. They have surrendered 100 in just one of the 13 games since the end of that span.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, Cpmcast SportsNet New England (Boston), Comcast SportsNet Chicago Plus
ABOUT THE CELTICS (12-11, 8-13-2 ATS): Boston dropped a 12-point decision at Houston on Friday and lost to San Antonio by 15 the next night while struggling on both ends. Rajon Rondo is attempting to shoulder more of the offensive load as the rest of the cast settles into their roles but has committed 14 turnovers in the first two games of the trip and is averaging 5.5 in six games this month. Rondo’s worst game of the season came in San Antonio on Saturday, when he was held to six points and nine assists while committing seven turnovers. It was only the second time this season that he had failed to reach double figures in assists. The Celtics’ biggest struggles on the defensive end have come in guarding the 3-point line. San Antonio hit 12 of 25 from beyond the arc on Saturday.
ABOUT THE BULLS (13-10, 8-14-0 ATS): Chicago knew that with Derrick Rose out for a large chunk of the season scoring could become an issue. The Bulls shot just 37.3 percent in the loss at Memphis on Monday, with Carlos Boozer’s 16 points leading four players in double figures. Luol Deng was being counted on to pick up some of the slack but has been in a shooting slump of late and is 7-for-31 in Chicago’s last two losses. What keeps the Bulls in games is the defense, which is again one of the best in the league. The Bulls slow the pace and play strong on the perimeter, holding opponents to 32 percent from 3-point range. Coach Tom Thibodeau was the designer of the Boston defense as an assistant before taking over in Chicago.
TRENDS:
* Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Chicago.
* Favorite is 5-2-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
* Home team is 5-2-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
* Celtics are 3-7-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
* Celtics are 1-4-1 ATS in the last six meetings in Chicago.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. Celtics G Avery Bradley, who has been out since May following shoulder surgery, participated in contact activities in practice for the first time on Monday.
2. Chicago has taken five of the last seven in the series.
3. Rondo has averaged 12.2 points, 9.4 assists and 2.6 turnovers in 23 career games against the Bulls.

Knicks Host Nets In Opener Of ESPN Doubleheader
Brooklyn Nets at New York Knicks
NBA Betting Preview
Date: 12/19/2012 at 7:00 p.m. (ET)
Opening Lines: New York -6, O/U 194½
Television: ESPN
Brooklyn Nets: The Nets (13-11 straight-up, 12-10-2 against the spread) will be playing the second half of a back-to-back after losing 92-90 at home to Utah on Tuesday. Brooklyn is just 2-7 SU and ATS in its last nine games, but the team is healthier now with center Brook Lopez (foot) returning two games ago. The Nets are 1-1 SU and 2-0 ATS against New York this year with each contest very close and played at the Barclays Center.
New York Knicks: The Knicks (18-6 SU, 14-10 ATS) are smarting after their first home loss this year on Monday, 109-96 to Houston and former celebrated teammate Jeremy Lin. That went "under" the big 210-point total after the "over" was 7-1-1 in New York’s previous nine. Rookie Chris Copeland (29 points) did a great job filling in for Carmelo Anthony (ankle), who is questionable again on Wednesday (click to check updated NBA injury report). The Knicks are 8-3 ATS at home to go along with the 10-1 SU mark.

Milwaukee Bucks: Milwaukee (13-10 SU, 12-11 ATS) beat Indiana 98-93 at home on Tuesday before traveling to Memphis. Mike Dunleavy (knee) returned to action against the Pacers after missing the previous six and scored 17 points off the bench. The Bucks had a four-game SU and ATS winning streak snapped Saturday with a 111-85 home loss to the red-hot Clippers. They have been a solid road play this year at 7-4 ATS (6-5 SU).
Memphis Grizzlies: Memphis (16-6 SU, 14-7-1 ATS) has come out of a mini cold streak with wins and covers in its last two games at Utah (99-86) and home vs. Chicago (80-71) on Monday . The Grizzlies are now 10-2 SU and 8-3-1 ATS at home this year. The "under" is 5-0 in their last five (11-3 in the last 14), and they lead the NBA in scoring defense at 90 PPG. Wednesday Tips
December 18, 2012
The theme of Wednesday's NBA card is simple: revenge. Seven games involve teams playing for at least the second time this season, including five non-divisional battles. We'll take a look at four of these matchups, leading off with the showdown of the Empire State in Manhattan.
Nets at Knicks - 7:05 PM EST
New York tries to shake off its first home loss of the season on Monday to Houston, as the Knicks and Nets hook up for the third time. Carmelo Anthony sat out his second straight game with an ankle injury, as the Knicks' All-Star is listed as questionable for Wednesday. The Nets have split a pair of games with their rivals so far this season, but this will be the first meeting at Madison Square Garden.
Jason Kidd burned his former team with a late three-pointer in a 100-97 victory by New York at Barclays Center on December 11, but the Nets cashed as 3 ½-point home underdogs. The Knicks were able to avenge an earlier overtime setback at Brooklyn on November 26, as New York fell, 96-89, cashing the 'under' of 193.
The Nets are playing with no rest following Tuesday's two-point loss to the Jazz, as Avery Johnson's team is 2-3 SU/ATS when playing on the second of a back-to-back. The Knicks own a 3-0 SU/ATS record at home coming off a loss, while hitting the 'over' each of the last two times in this situation.
Thunder at Hawks - 7:35 PM EST
Oklahoma City is the hottest team in the league with 11 consecutive victories, as the Thunder attempts to win its seventh road game in eight tries. The Hawks return home after Tuesday's contest at Washington, as Atlanta has cleaned up against most of the league's garbage.
Larry Drew's club owns eight wins over the Bobcats, Magic, and Wizards, but the Hawks have beaten the Grizzlies and Thunder on the road. Playing without Josh Smith on November 4, Atlanta rallied for a 104-95 triumph as nine-point 'dogs at Oklahoma City. The Hawks are listed as a home 'dog for the third time this season, falling to the Heat on November 9, while beating the Clippers on November 24.
The Thunder has played twice as many road games (8) as home contests (16) this season, as OKC is 6-2 SU/ATS away from Chesapeake Energy Arena. Oklahoma City bounced back from a 1-2 start by winning 19 of the last 21 games, while eclipsing the 100-point mark in 14 of the previous 15 contests.
Bucks at Grizzlies - 9:35 PM EST
Memphis continues to be in the mix as one of the teams to compete with Oklahoma City for greatness atop the Western Conference. The Grizzlies topped the Bulls on Monday in a low-scoring affair, 80-71 to cover as 6 ½-point favorites. The Bucks head to Memphis with no rest following a divisional battle with the Pacers on Tuesday, as Milwaukee has lost all three road games against the Western Conference this season.
The last time the Bucks and Grizzlies met at BMO Harris Bradley Center in early November, Memphis dominated Milwaukee, 108-90. The Grizzlies grabbed a 13-point halftime lead and cruised from there, as Lionel Hollins' club shot a sizzling 53% from the floor. Memphis has won each of the last four meetings with Milwaukee, but only one of those victories came at the FedEx Forum.
The Grizzlies have cashed the 'under' in six of the last eight home contests, as one of those 'overs' came against Phoenix in overtime. Milwaukee started the season with three consecutive road victories, but Scott Skiles' team is just 3-5 SU and 4-4 ATS the last eight games on the highway.
Hornets at Clippers - 10:35 PM EST
In one of the biggest upsets of the season, New Orleans went into Staples Center as 13-point underdogs in late November and knocked off Los Angeles, 105-98. The Clippers returned from a four-game road trip and stubbed their toe, as Vinny Del Negro's club is in the same spot after finishing their most recent highway voyage at 4-0 (while winning 10 straight overall).
Los Angeles concluded its away swing with a victory at Detroit, while holding all four opponents to 94 points or less. However, the Clips have hit the 'over' in seven of eight games as a home favorite of at least 8 ½ points this season. Since falling to the Hornets, the Clippers have won five consecutive games at Staples Center, while covering each of the last four.
The Hornets continue their five-game road trip, as New Orleans plays with no rest after Tuesday's affair at Golden State. Monty Williams' team has profited as a road 'dog of at least eight points this season by putting together a 4-2 ATS record, but the Hornets own just two wins away from the Big Easy.
