Tuesday Tips

December 3, 2012

The Tuesday NBA card showcases several Western Conference teams that are looking to make moves heading into the quarter-season mark. The Lakers hit the road for their first substantial trip of the season starting in Houston, while the Grizzlies return home following Saturday's overtime setback at San Antonio. We'll start in Brooklyn with the Thunder attempting to stay on fire at Barclays Center.

Thunder at Nets - 7:35 PM EST

The defending Western Conference champions are rolling right now with wins in eight of the last nine games, while covering eight times. Oklahoma City's offense can't be stopped by eclipsing the 100-point mark in nine consecutive contests, as the 'over' has been cashed six times. The Thunder wraps up a two-game road trip against a Nets' club that is returning to Brooklyn after a successful 2-1 SU/ATS mark on the highway.

The Nets beat the Celtics and Magic by double-digits, but came up lame in the finale at Miami, 102-89. Brooklyn backers felt pretty good as eight-point underdogs with a 14-point advantage in the first half. However, the Heat limited the Nets to just 30 points in the second half to grab the home cover. Brook Lopez missed his second straight game with a lingering foot injury, as the Brooklyn center is likely 'out' again on Tuesday.

Oklahoma City owns the second best ATS record in the league (12-5-1) behind Memphis, while leading Denver by five games in the Northwest Division. The Thunder faces a Nets' squad that has compiled a 7-1 SU and 5-1-2 ATS at Barclays Center, as OKC is 5-2 SU and 4-2-1 ATS on the highway. Scott Brooks' team has won six consecutive meetings with the Nets, including each of the last three at New Jersey.

Suns at Grizzlies - 8:05 PM EST

Memphis picked up another ATS win on Saturday, but blew a 15-point lead in an overtime setback at San Antonio as six-point underdogs. The Grizzlies return to FedEx Forum seeking their ninth home victory in 10 tries, while holding all nine opponents to less than 100 points ('under' is 6-3). Phoenix concludes a six-game trip, as the Suns have won just once in their first five on this voyage.

The most recent defeat for Alvin Gentry's club came in a Sunday matinee at New York, 106-99, but the Suns cashed as 11 ½-point underdogs. The loss dropped Phoenix to 2-8 away from the Valley, while the Suns have put together one of the worst ATS records by covering just six of 18 times. Phoenix did have success against Memphis last season, taking two of three meetings, both as a home 'dog.

The Grizzlies have won and covered in both games following a loss, while hitting the 'under' in six of the last seven contests overall. In three games as a double-digit favorite, Memphis has cashed two of three times, as the Grizzlies were bailed out by a late three-pointer to receive a front-door cover against the Pistons last Friday.

Lakers at Rockets - 8:05 PM EST

Los Angeles has no doubt been the biggest disappointment through the first month of the season at 8-9, as the Lakers begin their first extended road trip of the season. The Purple and Gold ended a three-game homestand with a humiliating loss to Dwight Howard's old squad as the Magic upset the Lakers as 13-point underdogs.

The first time the Lakers faced the Rockets, L.A. grabbed a 119-108 victory at Staples Center as seven-point favorites. The Lakers ran all over Houston in the first half, putting up 68 points in the first 24 minutes, while easily clinching the 'over' of 205. The Rockets allowed 54% shooting from the floor, as Howard torched Houston for 28 points and 13 rebounds.

Houston has played extremely well at the Toyota Center recently by winning five consecutive home contests. The Rockets have covered against several of the top teams in the East at home by picking up ATS wins over the Knicks, Bulls, and Heat. The key to Houston's success is their outside shooting, as James Harden and Chandler Parsons have helped lead the Rockets to 'overs' in eight of the last 10 games overall.

Denver Nuggets: Denver (9-9 straight-up, 10-8 against the spread) ended a three-game losing streak on Monday with a 113-110 home win over Toronto. Los Angeles Clippers: The Clippers (11-6 SU, 9-8 ATS) have won three straight after a 105-104 decision at Utah on Monday. However, that was a failure to cover as 2-point favorites, making Los Angeles 1-6 ATS in its last seven. The "over" is 5-0 in the last five for the Clips, with 197 points the highest total listed. This is the first meeting between Dallas and the Clippers this season. L.A. is 2-1 SU and ATS in the last three matchups after going 0-7 SU and ATS in the previous seven.

Wednesday Tips

December 4, 2012

Wednesday's NBA card takes center-stage in the betting community with 11 games on tap. Three of the more intriguing matchups involves interconference foes hooking up, while the Mavericks and Clippers close the night at Staples Center. We'll begin in Atlanta with the rested Hawks battling a road-weary Denver squad.

Nuggets at Hawks - 8:05 PM EST

Denver is playing in its fifth city and third different time zone since last Monday, as the Nuggets embark on a five-game road trip. George Karl's club slid by the Raptors two days ago at the Pepsi Center as 10 ½-point favorites in a 113-110 victory. The Nuggets have allowed at least 100 points in four straight games, all resulting in the 'over.' A lower-scoring contest may be on tap in Atlanta, facing a Hawks' team that is giving up 93.5 points per game.

Atlanta's six-game winning streak came to a screeching halt last Friday in a 113-111 home defeat to Cleveland as 8 ½-point 'chalk. The Hawks squandered an 11-point halftime lead, while giving up at least 100 points in regulation for just the second time this season. Larry Drew's club owns a dreadful 0-6 ATS mark as a favorite at Philips Arena, but the Hawks won four of those games straight-up.

The Nuggets are just 4-8 SU and 6-6 ATS on the highway, as two of those covers came as an underdog of at least seven points at Memphis and Miami. The 'over' is profiting for Denver on the road, posting an 8-2 mark the last 10 games away from the Pepsi Center. Denver has claimed five of the last six meetings with Atlanta, including an overtime thriller at home last season, 118-117.

Bucks at Spurs - 8:35 PM EST

Milwaukee continues its road swing through the Southwest Division with a matchup against a San Antonio squad that has been off four three days. The Spurs returned home from their 5-1 SU/ATS away trip to rally past the Grizzlies on Saturday night in overtime, while improving to 14-4 on the season. The Bucks head to the Alamo coming off a disappointing setback on Monday at New Orleans.

Scott Skiles' club has struggled in the role of a favorite this season, posting a 3-5 ATS record when laying points. The most recent loss came to a struggling Hornets' squad in a 102-81 loss, the sixth straight game Milwaukee has been limited to 93 points or less. The Bucks are currently riding a six-game 'under' streak, but three of the last four trips to the AT&T Center have resulted in an 'over.'

San Antonio has burned cash recently at home by failing to cover in three of the last four, while losing outright to the Clippers and Knicks in this stretch. The Spurs are going in an opposite direction of the Bucks in the totals department by eclipsing the 'over' in six of the previous seven games, as the overtime win over Memphis amazingly stayed 'under.'

Magic at Jazz - 9:05 PM EST

Orlando has caught fire on its West Coast swing with outright victories as large 'dogs against the Lakers and Warriors. The Magic is riding an impressive 4-1 ATS run away from central Florida, as the trip continues in Salt Lake City against a banged-up Jazz squad. Utah is without several key members of its frontcourt as Marvin Williams (concussion) and Derrick Favors (foot) remain sidelined, while the Jazz try to get on track following Monday's meltdown.

The Clippers stunned the Jazz, 105-104, but failed to cover as two-point road favorites. However, Utah threw away a 14-point lead in spite of shooting 57% from the floor. The loss was the first in seven home contests for Tyrone Corbin's squad, while the Jazz have now dropped three consecutive games for the first time this season. Utah takes care of business as home favorite with a 4-2 ATS mark, as the two ATS losses came in two-point victories over Denver and Sacramento.

The Magic broke a 69-69 tie by outscoring the Warriors, 33-25 in the final quarter of Monday's 102-94 triumph as 9 ½-point road 'dogs. Arron Afflalo, Glen Davis, and J.J. Redick each scored at least 22 points at Golden State, one night after Orlando shot 50% and put up 40 points in the final quarter in an upset of Los Angeles. Even though many of the faces have changed, the Magic looks to snap a three-game skid at Utah, which was capped off by an unbelievable front-door cover by the Jazz in overtime as 9 ½-point favorites this past April.

Mavericks at Clippers - 10:35 PM EST

Los Angeles is getting hot at the moment with three consecutive victories, fresh off the massive rally at Utah on Monday. The Clips are in the midst of five straight 'overs,' taking on a Mavs' squad that has been held to less than 100 points in four consecutive contests. Dallas plays six of its next seven games away from American Airlines Center, as the Mavs own a dreadful 2-6 record on the highway.

Rick Carlisle's club lost each of the last two games on a mini road swing through Philadelphia and Chicago, while allowing at least 100 points in all six road defeats. The Mavs snapped a three-game skid with an impressive second half effort in a 92-77 home rout of the Pistons, giving up just 29 points to an unrested Detroit team.

All three meetings between Dallas and Los Angeles last season were relatively low-scoring contests, each finishing 'under' the total. The Clippers have struggled in the role of a heavy favorite, putting together a 1-4 ATS record when laying at least seven points. The lone victory came on Saturday in a blowout of Sacramento, 116-81 as 12 ½-point 'chalk.' Vinny Del Negro's team is struggling against the number of late by cashing just once in the last six games.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Nov. 25-Dec. 1

Hottest ATS team

Oklahoma City Thunder – This week: 4-0 ATS, Season: 12-5-1

Oklahoma City has the third-best ATS record in the league and has covered in its last five games. The Thunder hit the road for a date with the Nets in Brooklyn on Tuesday before returning to Chesapeake Energy Arena for a five-game homestand.

Coldest ATS team

Orlando Magic – This week: 0-3 ATS, Season: 6-8-1

The Magic had a tough schedule this past week, blowing covers in three straight games to the Celtics, Spurs and Nets. To make matters worse, PG Jameer Nelson missed Friday’s loss because of an Achilles injury. The Magic have another tough week ahead of them with road dates in Golden State, Utah and Sacramento.

Hottest over bet

Houston Rockets – This week: 3-0 over, Season: 10-6 O/U

The Rockets’ offense has taken off in the last four games, averaging a whopping 117.5 points per game. James Harden and the frontcourt duo of Chandler Parson and Patrick Patterson are leading the charge, lifting Houston over the total in its last four contests. The Rockets have a tough schedule this week that includes dates with the Lakers, Spurs and Mavs.

Hottest under bet

Milwaukee Bucks – This week: 0-4 under, Season: 5-9-1 O/U

The Bucks have played under the total in five straight games. A major reason for Milwaukee’s recent dip below the total is a struggling offense that is averaging 89.8 points per game during that stretch - seven points lower than its season average. The Bucks hit the road for two games in New Orleans and San Antonio this week before hosting the Bobcats.

Scouting the schedule

-After a home date with the Magic on Sunday, the Lakers hit the road for seven of their next eight games. Los Angeles is just 1-4 ATS on the road this season.

-The Denver Nuggets are also about to the hit the road. After a home contest with the Raptors on Monday, the Nuggets hit the road for five straight games and six of their next seven. Denver is 8-4 O/U away from home this season.

Knicks Visit Heat To Open Thursday NBA Doubleheader

New York Knicks at Miami Heat
Date: 12/6/2012 at 8:00 p.m. (ET)
Opening Lines: Miami -7½, O/U 202½
Television: TNT

New York Knicks: The Knicks (13-4 straight-up, 11-6 against the spread) will be playing the second half of a back-to-back after edging Charlotte 100-98 on Wednesday. They’re a solid 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games in that situation. New York has found the road much tougher this year at 6-4 SU and 5-5 ATS, compared to 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS at Madison Square Garden. Leading scorer Carmelo Anthony (finger) is listed as probable on the NBA injury report after hurting himself against the Bobcats.

Miami Heat: Miami (12-4 SU, 7-9 ATS) should be playing angry after an embarrassing 105-101 loss Tuesday at Washington as 10-point favorites. That snapped a six-game winning streak and made the Heat 1-4 ATS in their last five overall. There are injury concerns with Mario Chalmers, Udonis Haslem and Norris Cole all questionable and Shane Battier already out (click to check updated NBA injury report). These teams met in the Big Apple in early November with the Knicks getting a big 104-84 win as 6-point ‘dogs. New York is 0-4 SU and ATS in the last four in South Beach.

Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix Suns
NBA Betting Preview
Date: 12/6/2012 at 10:30 p.m. (ET)
Opening Lines: Phoenix -3½, O/U 199½
Television: TNT

Dallas Mavericks: The Mavericks (8-10 SU, 7-11 ATS) will be dealing with some fatigue after losing 112-90 at the Clippers on Wednesday night. They are 1-4 ATS in their last five games on zero days rest. Newly signed point guard Derek Fisher is now starting over Darren Collison. The team is 2-6 SU and 3-5 ATS away this season.

Phoenix Suns: The Suns (7-12 SU, 6-12-1 ATS) return home after a six-game road trip, losing the last four (0-2-1 ATS). They have been much more successful at home overall (5-3 SU) but are just 2-6 ATS. The team is last in the league in scoring defense, surrendering 102.9 points per game, while ranking a mediocre 14th in offense (98.4 ppg) with point guard Goran Dragic (15.5 ppg) as the leading scorer. Phoenix won the last meeting against the Mavs in March, 96-94 as 3½-point home ‘dogs, with Dallas 8-0 SU and ATS in the previous eight.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NBA TNT doubleheader: Knicks at Heat, Mavericks at Suns
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Miami Heat (-7, 202)

The Miami Heat and New York Knicks know a thing or two about winning at home. After all, the Eastern Conference leaders collectively have won all 15 such contests this season. The Heat, who are 8-0 at AmericanAirlines Arena, will have the home-court advantage on Thursday, when the Knicks pay a visit for a nationally televised game.

The Heat likely are still massaging their ego after woe-begotten Washington doubled its season win total at their expense. New York extended its winning streak to four games on Wednesday as J.R. Smith drilled a step-back jumper as time expired for a 100-98 triumph over Charlotte. Carmelo Anthony finished with 23 points before receiving stitches on the middle finger of his left hand after diving into the bench to save a loose ball. His status for Thursday is unknown, however, head coach Mike Woodson did tell reporters, “He’s going to play. He’ll be ready to play."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE KNICKS (13-4, 11-6 ATS): Coach Mike Woodson insisted after Wednesday's contest that Anthony would be able to play versus Miami. The electric forward cooled off the Heat with a team-high 30 points and 10 rebounds in New York's 104-84 victory on Nov. 2. As for Wednesday, Jason Kidd returned following a four-game absence due to lower back spasms. The veteran guard came off the bench to score seven points but logged nearly 25 1/2 minutes to provide a jolt for the Knicks.

ABOUT THE HEAT (12-4, 7-9 ATS): The inexplicable loss to Washington snapped a six-game winning streak for Miami. LeBron James did his best to put the setback in perspective, although his pair of missed 3-point attempts in the waning moments could have altered the outcome. Dwyane Wade insisted that the Heat will have no problem getting up for Thursday's tilt. "It'll be a good game for us," Wade said. "It's a game that we all look forward to. Obviously, we want to play better, and it's a good time for it (facing the Knicks)."

TRENDS:

* Under is 10-2-1 in the last 13 meetings.
* Home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
* Favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings.
* Knicks are 2-6 ATS in the last eight meetings.
* Knicks are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings in Miami.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. New York is off to its best 17-game start to a season since the 1995-96 campaign. It also was 13-4 during that campaign.

2. Wade had 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field in the teams' first meeting. While it's an impressive performance to be certain, Wade has averaged 27.9 points in 25 career games versus New York.

3. The Knicks played their fourth game without C Marcus Camby, who is being plagued by plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix Suns (-3, 199.5)

The Dallas Mavericks try to shake off an awful start to their road trip Thursday, when they take on the Phoenix Suns at US Airways Center. Dallas began its three-game trek Wednesday in Los Angeles, where it thoroughly was thrashed in a 112-90 loss to the Clippers. The Mavericks never led as they allowed the first seven points of the game and fell behind by as many as 24 late in the fourth quarter.

Phoenix returns home from a 1-5 road trip during which it lost the last four contests. After splitting the first two games of the trek, the Suns suffered a 40-point loss in Detroit on Nov. 28. They dropped close decisions in Toronto and New York before concluding the trip with a 10-point overtime setback to the league-leading Grizzlies in Memphis on Tuesday. Phoenix led by as many as 16 points before Rudy Gay forged a 94-94 tie with 15.9 seconds remaining in regulation.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Dallas), TNT

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (8-10, 7-11 ATS): Dallas trailed by 11 points after one quarter in Los Angeles on Wednesday but began the second with a 9-0 run to get within 29-27. That was as close as the Mavericks would get as they were down 18 points at halftime and never got the deficit to single digits in the second half. Guard O.J. Mayo entered the game against the Clippers second in the league with a 52.7 percent shooting efficiency from beyond the arc, went 0-of-4 and has gone without a 3-pointer in three of his last five contests.

ABOUT THE SUNS (7-12, 6-12-1 ATS): Phoenix has not had much success against Dallas of late, losing eight of the last nine meetings between the teams. In fact, the Suns snapped an eight-game skid in the all-time series in their last encounter as they posted a 96-94 triumph at US Airways Center on March 12. It was the team's second win in the last 13 matchups and snapped its three-game home losing streak against the Mavericks. Center Marcin Gortat has started 96 consecutive games and appeared in all 140 contests since being acquired by the Suns from Orlando on Dec. 18, 2010.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 9-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
* Mavericks are 8-1 ATS in the last nine meetings.
* Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Phoenix.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Gortat leads the Suns with six double-doubles.

2. Mavericks rookie F Jae Crowder is 3-of-26 from the field over his last four games.

3. The Suns have trailed by double digits in 15 of their 19 contests this season.

Texas Teams Houston, Dallas Meet In Saturday NBA Game

Dallas Mavericks at Houston Rockets
NBA Betting Preview
Date: 12/08/2012 at 8:00 p.m. (ET)
Opening Lines: NA
Television: FOX Southwest

Dallas Mavericks: Already missing star Dirk Nowitzki since the start of the season, the Mavs (9-10 straight-up, 8-11 against the spread) came out of Thursday's win and cover at Phoenix with a couple more injury concerns. Chris Kaman, the team's second-leading scorer at 13.7 points per game, suffered a sprained left ankle while Shawn Marion, Dallas' leading rebounder (7.1 rebounds per game), went down with a groin injury. Both players are questionable for Saturday's tilt in Houston, and it could open the door for Brandan Wright to start at center with rookie Jae Crowder possibly replacing Marion at forward (click to check updated NBA injury report). The Mavericks are 3-7 on the NBA highway so far, covering the spread in four of the 10 away games. This marks the first game against a divisional opponent for the Mavs. Dallas won and covered all three games vs. the Rockets last season, including a 101-99 win at Toyota Center as a 3-point underdog.

Houston Rockets: Friday night finds the Rockets (9-8 SU, 9-7-1 ATS) in San Antonio for the front end of this back-to-back. The Spurs were laying 8½ in that contest with a 212-point total. Houston was riding a two-game winning streak into that matchup, both SU and ATS, winning and covering five of its last six heading into the clash with San Antonio. The Rockets came away with a 107-105 win over the Lakers on Tuesday in a game that closed as a Pick 'em and fell a bit shy of the 215½-point total. Houston shot under 38 percent for the contest, but the bench bailed the Bayou City ballers out by outscoring LA's reserves 59-20. James Harden shot a woeful 3-for-19 vs. the Lakers and suffered a injury to his right big toe, but he was expected to play against the Spurs on Friday. Houston is 7-3 at home so far, also covering seven of the 10 games, including the last five at Toyota Center.
