Armadillo's Write-Up

Thursday, December 20

-- Central Michigan is 4-4 vs D-I teams, winning its two games against teams not in top 200 by 2-3 points. Texas State lost seven of last nine games, with wins over teams ranked #341/329; Bobcats play at #3 pace in country- three of their last four games went over total. WAC single digit road dogs are 11-10. MAC single digit home favorites are 9-7.

-- Pepperdine won seven of last nine games; they're 2-1 vs teams in top 150, but lost three games to teams ranked lower- they turn ball over 24% of time, not good. Tulane has played 3rd-easiest schedule in country but they've also won seven of last nine games. WCC single digit road dogs are 1-6 vs spread; C-USA single digit home favorites are 7-5.

-- 11-0 Michigan just beat West Virginia in NYC; they're 3-0 vs teams not in top 200, winning by 37-32-28 points; Wolverines shoot 57.5% inside arc. Eastern Michigan upset Purdue at home, lost at Syracuse by 36 in its two games vs top 100 teams- they're shooting 39% inside arc. MAC road underdogs of 18+ points are 2-6 against the spread.

San Diego State At Home Against BYU In Poinsettia Bowl

Brigham Young Cougars vs. San Diego State Aztecs
Poinsettia Bowl Betting Preview
Date: 12/20/2012 at 8:00 p.m. (ET)
Opening Lines: BYU -3, O/U 50
Television: ESPN

BYU Cougars: No stranger to playing bowl games in San Diego, the Cougars (7-5 straight-up, 6-6 against the spread) will make their first trip to the Poinsettia Bowl to meet the Aztecs as slight favorites. This is Brigham Young's 12th trip to San Diego for a bowl game after making 11 appearances in the Holiday Bowl over the years. The Cougars went 4-6-1 in those matchups that started in the late 70s. Coach Bronco Mendenhall's squad completed its second season as an independent and closed the 2012 campaign by winning three of the final four games, the "over" also 3-1 in that span. Backup quarterbacl James Lark led a 50-14 rout at New Mexico State in the season finale, completing 34-of-50 passes for 384 yards and six touchdowns, five of those scoring tosses hauled in by Cody Hoffman, the team's leading receiver. Lark was pressed into duty for Riley Nelson, who is probable but may not start the Poinsettia Bowl due to a rib injury (click for updated college football injury report).

San Diego State Aztecs: This is the second Poinsettia Bowl appearance for the Aztecs (9-3 SU, 8-4 ATS), who won the 2010 contest vs. Navy, 35-14. San Diego State finished the 2012 campaign in a three-way tie for first in the Mountain West with Boise State and Fresno State, each team sporting 7-1 conference records. Coach Rocky Long's crew closed the schedule with seven consecutive triumphs after starting MWC play with a loss to Fresno State. The Aztecs bring the nation's 16th-ranked rushing attack into the battle with BYU, with the ground game led by sophomore tailback Adam Muema, who ranked 16th in the country averaging almost 113 yards per game. Adam Dingwell started SDSU's last four games of the season at QB after Ryan Katz suffered an ankle injury in the win over Nevada. Dingwell completed 71-of-115 pass attempts (61.7 percent) for eight touchdowns. This will be the 36th meeting between the Aztecs and Cougars, who own a 27-7-1 advantage over the years. BYU has won nine of the last 10 clashes with SDSU, covering two of the past three.

Poinsettia Bowl preview

December 18, 2012

Two familiar foes from their days in the WAC and Mountain West Conferences will collide Thursday night at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego for the Poinsettia Bowl. San Diego St. will be bowling at home for the second time in three years, while BYU is in the postseason for the eighth straight season under Bronco Mendenhall.

Most books opened BYU (7-5 straight up, 6-6 against the spread) as a three-point favorite with a total of 49 ½. As of late Tuesday afternoon, most spots had the Cougars favored by 3.5 with the total down to 48 ½. Gamblers can take the Aztecs to win outright for a plus-155 return (risk $100 to win $155).

Since losing back-to-back games in September, San Diego St. (9-3 SU, 8-4 ATS) has won seven consecutive games while compiling a 6-1 spread record. Rocky Long’s team is gunning for the first eight-game winning streak in school history. The Aztecs closed the regular season with a 42-28 win at Wyoming as seven-point ‘chalk.’ Sophomore running back Adam Muema was the catalyst against the Cowboys, rushing for 255 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries.

Muema enjoyed a banner campaign, rushing for 1,355 yards and 16 touchdowns while averaging 6.4 yards per carry. Senior RB Walter Kazee is also productive out of the backfield, tallying 822 rushing yards and eight TDs.

Oregon St. transfer Ryan Katz was the starting QB until sustaining a season-ending ankle injury in an Oct. 20 win over Nevada. Katz had thrown for 13 touchdowns compared to four interceptions, but the Aztecs haven’t missed a beat with sophomore Adam Dingwell.

Dingwell has completed 61.7 percent of his throws for 795 yards with an 8/4 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

The San Diego St. offense will face a stout BYU defense which is ranked third in the nation overall and second against the run. The Cougars give up only 84.3 yards rushing per game and 14.7 points per contest.

BYU lost four of its six games against bowl-bound teams, going 3-3 ATS. The Cougars’ best wins came over Utah St. (6-3) at home and at Ga. Tech (41-17). They have been single-digit favorites four times, limping to a 0-4 spread record.

BYU won three of its last four games, including a 50-14 win at New Mexico St. as a 28-point road favorite. Senior QB James Lark made the most of his first career start, throwing for 384 yards and six TDs without an interception.

Mendenhall has been playing coy about who will get the starting nod under center. Riley Nelson (ribs) will be available after sitting out the regular-season finale but according to Jay Drew, BYU’s beat writer for the Salt Lake City-Tribune, he will be ‘stunned’ if Lark doesn’t start.

Nelson, the senior starting QB for most of the year, has a 13/12 TD-INT ratio. Meanwhile, Lark has eight TD passes without being picked off.

Junior WR Cody Hoffman is BYU’s best player on offense. Hoffman hauled in 90 receptions for 1,134 yards and 11 TDs. He is a physical wideout with excellent speed and an NFL future. Jamaal Williams paced the Cougars in rushing with 744 yards and 11 TDs.

San Diego St. went 3-1 ATS in four underdog situation this season, winning a pair of those games outright.

San Diego St. faced six bowl-bound squads this year, winning three of those games while going 4-2 ATS. The Aztecs won a pair of nail-biters at Nevada (39-38) and at Boise St. (21-19), and they also drilled Air Force by a 28-9 count as seven-point home ‘chalk.’

The ‘under’ has gone 6-5 overall for both teams this season. However, BYU has seen the ‘over’ hit a 3-1 clip in its last four games, while San Diego St. has watched the ‘under’ go 3-1 in its last four outings.

BYU has won five in a row over San Diego St. and nine of the last 10. The Cougars went 3-2 ATS in the head-to-head showdowns from 2006-2010, including a 24-21 triumph two seasons ago.

BYU has won three straight bowl games both SU and ATS, including last year’s 24-21 win over Tulsa as a 2 ½-point favorite in the Armed Forces Bowl.

San Diego St. lost a 32-30 decision to UL-Lafayette as a four-point favorite in last season’s New Orleans Bowl. However, the Aztecs won the Poinsettia Bowl two years ago by mauling Navy, 35-14, as three-point favorites.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

Poinsettia Bowl: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Poinsettia Bowl: BYU Cougars vs. San Diego State Aztecs (+3, 48.5)

POINSETTIA BOWL STORYLINES

1. Two former conference foes renew a rivalry that is much more important to San Diego State. The Aztecs are seeking their first 10-win season since 1977 and playing in a third consecutive bowl game for the initial time in program history. Brigham Young attempts to add on to its dominating 27-7-1 edge in the all-time series and is 5-2 in bowl games under eight-year coach Bronco Mendenhall.

2. Mendenhall has an interesting decision to make at quarterback between Riley Nelson and one-game sensation James Lark. Nelson has been maddeningly inconsistent and his absence because of injured ribs presented Lark with the opportunity to pass for 384 yards and six touchdowns in the regular-season finale against porous New Mexico State.

3. Mountain West Coach of the Year Rocky Long of San Diego State and Mendenhall are highly familiar with one another. Mendenhall was defensive coordinator under Long for five seasons (1998-2002) at New Mexico and considers him a mentor. The Aztecs’ atypical 3-3-5 defensive alignment doesn’t prompt an uncomfortable adjustment period for Mendenhall and the BYU staff, who have previously coached against it on several occasions.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: BYU opened between a 2.5 and 3.5-point favorite while the total has moved from 49 to as low as 48 before settling in between.

WEATHER: The forecast calls for clear skies and temperatures in the mid 50s. Winds are expected to blow NNW at 2 mph.

CONSENSUS: Fifty-six percent of Covers Consensus picks are on BYU while 53 percent is on the under.

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in San Diego State.
* Cougars are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 meetings.
* Home team is 5-2 ATS in their last seven meetings.

ABOUT BRIGHAM YOUNG (7-5, 6-6 ATS): No matter who starts at quarterback, junior receiver Cody Hoffman is a big-time threat with 90 catches for 1,134 yards and 11 touchdowns. Hoffman caught a school-record five touchdowns in the season finale. Freshman Jamaal Williams rushed for a team-best 744 yards for an offense that averages 29.2 points. The Cougars shine on defense, led by junior Kyle Van Noy. The dominating linebacker has 11.5 sacks and five forced fumbles for a unit that ranks third in total defense (266.3 yards per game) and fifth in scoring defense (14.7). BYU’s stout rushing defense (84.3) ranks second nationally as it goes up against a strong San Diego State rushing attack. The Cougars often land an edge in field position with senior Riley Stephenson, who ranks second nationally in punting at 47.3 with a 42.2 net average.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE (9-3, 7-1 Mountain West, 8-4 ATS): The Aztecs have won seven straight games and haven’t lost since September. San Diego State has set a school-record with 2,750 rushing yards – the old mark of 2,476 was set during Marshall Faulk’s freshman campaign in 1991 – with sophomore Adam Muema leading the way with 1,355 yards and 16 rushing scores. San Diego State will be without senior Walter Kazee (822 yards), who injured his knee in the regular season finale. The strong running game has aided sophomore quarterback Adam Dingwell (eight touchdowns, four interceptions) after he became the starter for the final four regular season games because of a season-ending injury to Ryan Katz. Senior cornerback Leon McFadden (three interceptions) will be called on to help slow Hoffman, while junior safety Nat Berhe (team-best 87 tackles) and sophomore middle linebacker Jake Fely (86 stops, team-high seven sacks) are top-notch defenders.

Diamond Head Classic Preview

ARIZONA WILDCATS (9-0)

Conference: Pac-12

Coach: Sean Miller (fourth season)

Key players: G Mark Lyons (13.9 ppg, 3.0 apg, .415 3PT%); G Nick Johnson (13.6 ppg, 3.5 apg, 3.0 spg, .438 3PT%); F Solomon Hill (12.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 3.3 apg, .410 3PT%)

Notes: No. 4 Wildcats are highest-ranked team to appear in any DHC … Lyons, a Xavier transfer, played in the DHC last season with the Musketeers. He is one of two non-UH players set to appear in the event more than once, along with SDSU’s JJ O’Brien, a Utah transfer … Miller played for Pittsburgh in the 1990 Rainbow Classic and lost 84-82 to UH in the title game … Wildcats are 12th in the country, shooting .408 on 3-pointers as a team.

Miller: “I think what we want to do is to enjoy each other and the fact that we are in Hawaii and make the most of the opportunity. We want to try to win every game, and at the same time enjoy the fact that it is the holiday season. We’re going there to try to win the tournament, knowing full well that it’s a very understated field.”

E. TENNESSEE ST. BUCCANEERS (2-7)

Conference: Atlantic Sun

Coach: Murry Bartow (10th season)

Key players: F Lester Wilson (17.9 ppg, 6.8 rpg, .392 3PT%); F Hunter Harris (7.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.3 bpg)

Notes: Four projected starters are out, including two key players who combined to score 19.7 ppg last year (Sheldon Cooley and Marcus Dubose). They were dismissed for violations of team rules after two games … ETSU was a late replacement team for Texas Tech, which dropped out of the field … Bucs are expected to dress only eight players at the DHC … former ’Bow Petras Balocka started his college career at ETSU.

Bartow: “Struggle is the word. I’ve never had anything like this. … We’re just trying to improve, take teaching moments out of every game. We’re in a one-bid league, so if you can build your team, you don’t panic. You want this to be a great team-bonding deal.”

HAWAII RAINBOW WARRIORS (5-3)

Conference: Big West

Coach: Gib Arnold (third season)

Key players: F Christian Standhardinger (17.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.6 spg); C Vander Joaquim (13.9 ppg, 7.3 rpg, .519 FG%); G Brandon Spearman (12.5 ppg, .353 3PT%); F Hauns Brereton (11.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg, .342 3PT%)

Notes: Host team is 5-4 in the DHC, finishing fourth in 2009 and fifth in 2010 and ’11. … UH has four players averaging 6.4 rebounds or better. … Point guard Jace Tavita is tied for 16th nationally in assists at 6.3 per game. … Arnold was an assistant with the USC team that won the inaugural DHC in 2009. He did not play UH.

Arnold: “I think it’s a great field from top to bottom. I really like (the challenge posed). It’s next to impossible to get these caliber of teams to come to play us on a single game.”

INDIANA ST. SYCAMORES (5-3)

Conference: Missouri Valley

Coach: Greg Lansing (third season)

Key players: G Jake Odum (15.5 ppg, .522 FG%, 4.2 apg); F Manny Arop (11.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg)

Notes: Larry Bird’s alma mater has lost to two ranked teams this season, 86-59 at then-No. 13 UCLA and 77-68 in OT vs. No. 23 New Mexico. … Sycamores have held opponents to 63 points or fewer five times this season … Odum is in the ISU top 10 in career assists and steals. … Lansing needs one more victory to tie John Wooden for 12th all-time in victories at ISU (44).

Lansing: “(We’re) just a really inexperienced team. Only Odum played a lot (last year), we’re playing eight, nine new guys. We’re still finding our way. … we’ve showed spurts of really good play but we’ve also showed spurts where we weren’t very good.”

MIAMI HURRICANES (7-1)

Conference: Atlantic Coast

Coach: Jim Larranaga (second season)

Key players: G Durand Scott (15.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg, .588 FG%); G Shane Larkin (14.8 ppg, 2.0 spg, .517 3PT%); C Reggie Johnson (12.6 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 1.9 bpg)

Notes: Larranaga, who took George Mason to the 2006 Final Four, is tied with Tubby Smith at 19th on the winningest active coaches list with 490 victories. … The U is 5-0 since Scott’s return coming off a six-game ban for impermissible benefits … Hurricanes have five players at 6-10 or taller.

Larranaga: “ESPN does a fantastic job of creating these exempt events at some incredible locations. Coming here is a special time for our players. We only have one player who’s been to Hawaii. The tournament itself has got a great field. Of course, Hawaii, the host team, has a ton of talent.”

MISSISSIPPI REBELS (8-1)

Conference: Southeastern

Coach: Andy Kennedy (seventh season)

Key players: G Marshall Henderson (17.8 ppg, .353 3PT%); F Murphy Holloway (14.8 ppg, 10.4 rpg, .577 FG%); F Reginald Buckner (10.3 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 2.9 bpg)

Notes: Rebels’ only previous trip to Hawaii was in 2000 … Henderson leads the SEC in scoring … PG Jarvis Summers is fourth nationally in assist/TO ratio (4.9) … Rebels have scored 90-plus points four times this season and are eighth nationally at 82.6 ppg … Bucker is already the program record-holder in blocks (259).

Kennedy: “We’re excited about the opportunity to be on this beautiful island. Any time you have an ESPN-run event, you know it’s going to be quality on and off the court. … The biggest thing we tried to prepare for is the 11 a.m. local tip. We started to come west (73-70 win at Loyola Marymount on Wednesday) to make that acclimation.”

SAN DIEGO ST. AZTECS (9-1)

Conference: Mountain West

Coach: Steve Fisher (14th season)

Key players: G Jamaal Franklin (18.6 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 3.1 apg); G Chase Tapley (13.9 ppg, 1.8 spg, .458 3PT%); G Xavier Thames (10.4 ppg, 3.0 apg, .429 3PT%)

Notes: Aztecs, a former UH WAC foe, get a refresher of the Stan Sheriff a season before they join the Big West … Fisher coached his Fab Five Michigan team to the 1992 Rainbow Classic title with an 86-74 win over No. 2 Kansas, which had current USF coach Rex Walters at guard. … Senior forward DeShawn Stephens (7.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg) had UH as a finalist for his services out of Santa Monica College before choosing SDSU.

Fisher: “We’re definitely still getting better as a whole each and every day in practice. I really feel confident of how we’re jelling together. From the first game until now, we’ve made some major improvements and that’s what we have to keep on doing day by day.”

SAN FRANCISCO DONS (5-4)

Conference: West Coast

Coach: Rex Walters (fifth season)

Key players: G De’End Parker (15.4 ppg, .593 3PT%); F Cole Dickerson (13.6 ppg, 13.1 rpg); G Cody Doolin (11.7 ppg, 6.3 apg).

Notes: Though there are no seniors on the Dons’ roster, Dickerson is the country’s top rebounder, while Parker is third in 3-point percentage and Doolin 15th in assists. … Behind Doolin, the Dons ended UH’s postseason run in Gib Arnold’s first season with a 77-74 comeback win at the Stan Sheriff in the CIT second round. … Walters made his USF debut at Hawaii to open the 2008 season.

Walters: “Coming to Hawaii is always something you circle on your calendar, whether it’s for a preseason tournament like we did five years ago, or the the CIT, which was a great experience for our guys. … We’re young, but talented. Guys are still trying to find themselves, and that’s OK.”

No. 12 Missouri tries to hand No. 10 Illinois its first loss

ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI (12-0)

vs. MISSOURI TIGERS (9-1)

St. Louis, MO
Tip-off: Saturday, 6:00 p.m. ET
Line: Missouri -1.5, Total: 142.5

The Braggin' Rights game has even more luster than usual on Saturday, as it features two of the best teams in the nation with No. 10 Illinois taking on No. 12 Missouri.

This series has been played annually since 1983, but the Tigers have had the upper hand recently with three straight victories. However, the Illini are 12-0 SU so far this season, including 4-1 ATS in non-home games. This includes an impressive double-digit win at then-No. 10 Gonzaga. Missouri has ripped off five straight wins (2-2 ATS) since its lone loss of the season to Louisville, currently ranked fifth in the nation.

Which top-12 team will come out on top Saturday? For the answer, connect to College Basketball Best Bets for all the Expert picks throughout the entire 2012-13 season. The StatFox experts continue to roll in the past eight days, posting a collective 36-16-1 ATS (69%) since Dec. 14. StatFox Scott is 8-2-1 ATS (80%) over this stretch, while StatFox Dave is 14-5 ATS (74%) in these eight days. The experts now have a collective 54.2% ATS mark (150-127-6) in college basketball Best Bets for the season, led by StatFox Gary, who is 7-1 ATS since Monday, and sits at 61% ATS (33-21) for the season, while Dave is at 56% ATS (56-44-2) on the year.

The Illini are led by dynamic PG Brandon Paul who averages 18.8 PPG of the team's 76.9 PPG (43rd in D-I). Paul has scored in double-figures in every game, while also leading Illinois in both rebounds (5.1 RPG) and assists (3.5 APG). Illinois grabs just 36.6 RPG (129th in nation) with a weak frontcourt. Senior SG D.J. Richardson is second on the team in both scoring (11.5 PPG) and rebounding (4.6 RPG) despite standing just 6-foot-3. C Nnanna Egwu, who is 6-foot-11, blocked four shots in Sunday's 66-53 win over Eastern Kentucky, but pulled down just two boards in 28 minutes of action. Starting PF Tyler Griffey averages a mere 3.5 RPG in his 23.5 MPG.

Missouri has a couple players with experience in this rivalry. PG Phil Pressey (12.3 PPG, 5.8 APG) was the star in last year's 78-74 win with 18 points and five assists. PF Laurence Bowers (team-high 16.3 PPG) has played in this series three times, with 13 points and nine rebounds in a 75-64 Tigers victory two years ago. Bowers has been outstanding in the past four games with 19.5 PPG (62% FG, 7-of-9 threes). His 6.4 RPG is also a big reason why his team ranks 4th in the nation in rebounding margin (+13.3 RPG) and have the 7th-most offensive boards in the land (16.1 per game). C Alex Oriakhi has also been a glass eater with 8.6 RPG to go along with his 10.6 PPG (51% FG). Oregon transfer G Jabari Brown made his Tigers debut on Monday with 12 points in the 102-51 pounding of South Carolina State, but he made just 3-of-9 FG and 1-of-7 threes. Missouri makes just 33.1% of its threes with Bowers (60%) as the only player above 40% from downtown.

No. 7 OSU hosts No. 9 Kansas on Saturday

KANSAS JAYHAWKS (9-1)

at OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (9-1)

Tip-off: Saturday, 4:00 p.m. ET
Line: Ohio State -3.5, Total: 141.5

It will be a rematch of last year’s national semifinals when No. 9 Kansas travels to No. 7 Ohio State on Saturday.

These teams actually met twice last season. Kansas won both times, SU and ATS, a December home game (in which the Buckeyes played without star Jared Sullinger) and the neutral court win at the Final Four. The Jayhawks have absolutely blown out some decent opponents of late, beating Richmond by 28 on Tuesday night and Colorado by 36 two weeks ago. Ohio State’s lone loss this season came at Duke. Since then it has beaten five small school opponents SU (2-2 ATS).

Who will win the latest battle of these two storied programs?

Kansas’ balanced attack features an All-America-caliber, inside-outside combo. Freshman SG Ben McLemore (15.9 PPG) has proven difficult to contain, while C Jeff Withey (14.1 PPG on 59.3% FG, 8.1 RPG, 5.4 BPG) has dominated at both ends of the court. The Jayhawks have held opponents to 58.5 PPG on 35.1% FG, largely due to Withey’s presence inside. On Tuesday night against Richmond, he went for 17 points on 7-for-9 FG and 13 rebounds in just 26 minutes. He’s also managed to avoid any foul trouble, committing just 11 fouls in 10 games, and never more than two in a game. The Jayhawks’ biggest weakness has been their lack of a consistent outside shooter. As a team, they’re shooting just 33.9% 3-pt FG.

The Buckeyes have transitioned nicely from the Jared Sullinger era. SF Deshaun Thomas (30.4 PPG, 6.9 RPG) has emerged as a star on the offensive end, and SG Lenzelle Smith Jr. (11.5 PPG, 48.7% 3-pt FG) has become a serious threat on the perimeter. PG Aaron Craft (9.1 PPG, 4.8 APG) remains the best perimeter defender in college basketball, but he’s struggled to become more of a scorer (37.7% FG, 33.3% 3-pt FG). This game could come down to how well the Buckeyes can contain Withey in the low post. Senior bruiser Evan Ravenel (6.6 PPG, 4.9 RPG) will be giving up about four inches to Withey. Ravenel splits time with sophomore C Amir Williams (1.3 BPG), who will have to prove he can anchor against Withey in the low post.
