Texas Longhorns: Madison Square Garden is once again the site for the Jimmy V Classic, where the Longhorns (5-2 straight-up, 2-3 against the spread) meet the Hoyas in Tuesday's opening tip. Texas dropped two of three at the Maui Invitational just before Thanksgiving, including an embarrassing 86-73 loss to Div-II Chaminade, a 16½-point underdog. The 'Horns rank 31st in the country, pulling down 40.7 rebounds per night, and are paced on the scoring end by sophomore Sheldon McClellan (17.0 points per game).
Georgetown Hoyas: Coach John Thompson III brings the Hoyas (5-1 SU, 1-3 ATS) into this matchup off a 37-36 home win vs. Tennessee last Friday. Laying 7½ in the contest, G'town lost the rebounding battle 35-27, missed five of its nine free throws and netted just 1-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc. The Hoyas are shooting better than 48 percent from the field on the season despite that ugly win, with scoring leader Greg Whittington (12.7 ppg) one of four players averaging in double figures.

NC State Wolfpack: A preseason Top 10 team, the Wolfpack (4-2 SU, 3-2 ATS) dropped to 18th in both polls before last week's 79-72 loss at Michigan in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. NC State was a 5½-point underdog in the contest and outscored by 10 at the free-throw line and 27-6 from beyond the 3-point arc. The 'Pack and Huskies have split their four previous meetings, with the two most recent matchups coming in the Round of 32 of the 2002 NCAA Tournament (a 77-74 UConn win) and same round of the 2005 event (a 65-62 NC State victory).
UConn Huskies: This will be the first appearance in the Jimmy V Classic for Connecticut (6-1 SU, 1-3 ATS), but the 108th time the Huskies have played at MSG, where they are 57-50 all-time as longtime members of the Big East. UConn had a rather lackluster showing against New Hampshire last week, posting a 61-53 victory in the unlined affair that saw the Huskies miss 13 of their 14 long-range shots and shoot under 37 percent overall. Shabazz Napier leads Connecticut with 18.6 ppg while Ryan Boatright chips in an average 13.7 along with a team-best 4.9 assists per game.

Florida Gators: Coach Billy Donovan's club has risen to fifth in the latest AP Poll, and the Gators (6-0 straight-up, 3-1 against the spread) look to remain unbeaten with a win on Wednesday before taking 10 days off. Florida is coming off an 82-49 rout of Marquette in last week's SEC/Big East Challenge, and holds the all-time edge in the series with FSU (41-22). The Gators have won and covered the last three vs. the Seminoles.
Florida State Seminoles: After an embarrassing 61-56 loss to Mercer in an unlined game this past Sunday at home, the Seminoles (4-3 SU, 3-2 ATS) bring a two-game losing streak into Wednesday's contest. Minnesota popped FSU five days earlier, 77-68, with the 'Noles laying three in that ACC-Big Ten battle. A big problem for Florida State this season has been turnovers, as the team is committing an average of 16.3 per game, most in the ACC. The last three times the Gators visited Tallahassee, the final score fell "under" the total.

Temple Owls: It's the first "Big 5" matchup of the season for the Owls (5-0 SU, 2-2 ATS), who won five of their six games against La Salle, Saint Joseph's, Villanova and Penn a year ago. That includes a 78-67 win over 'Nova as 4-point home favorites, the third straight cover for Temple vs. the Wildcats and third consecutive "over" as well. Villanova Wildcats: Coach Jay Wright and Villanova (4-3 SU, 4-2 ATS) hope to avoid falling to 0-2 in the Big 5 standings after dropping a 77-74 overtime decision at La Salle during the Thanksgiving holiday. The Wildcats did get the cover as 3½-point dogs and have since bounced back with a 62-52 victory at Vanderbilt, where they were getting 1½ points from the oddsmakers. Ryan Arcidiacono leads four Villanova players in double-digits with a 12.9 points per game and also leads the team in assists with 4.4 per game

Wednesday, Dec. 5 - No. 7 Florida vs. Florida State
Florida has moved up the polls with a perfect 6-0 SU start that includes victories over Wisconsin, Central Florida and most recently an 82-49 romp over Marquette this past Thursday as a 10 ½-point home favorite. The Gators are now 3-1 ATS on the year. Kenny Boynton leads the team in scoring with 14.5 points a game while shooting 41.3 percent from the floor.
Florida State fell to 4-3 SU on the year with back-to-back losses to No.21 Minnesota as a three-point home favorite and to Mercer in a game that had no posted line. It is 3-2 ATS and the total has gone OVER in all four of its games with a posted line. As a team, the Seminoles are shooting 47.6 percent from the field and averaging 75.1 points a game.
Thursday, Dec. 6 - No. 11 Creighton vs. Nebraska
Creighton moved all the way to No. 11 in last AP poll, but could tumble a bit after losing to Boise State this past Wednesday 83-70 as a 13-point home favorite. The Bluejays bounced back with an 80-51 rout of St. Josephs as six-point home favorites on Saturday to improve to 7-1 SU and 5-1 ATS. They are ranked 12th in the nation in scoring with an average of 82.6 points a game.
Nebraska starts this week off with a Monday night tilt against USC as a two-point underdog at home. The Cornhuskers are currently 5-1 SU and 3-2 ATS with the total going OVER in two of its first three games with a posted line. They are only averaging 65.2 points a game but shooting a respectable 46 percent from the floor.
Friday, Dec. 7 - VCU vs. Old Dominion
VCU made the switch to the Atlantic 10 this season but face an old familiar Colonial Athletic Association foe in this matchup. The Rams come in at 5-3 SU and 2-3 ATS after beating Belmont 75-65 this past Saturday as 7 ½-point home favorites. They are 1-2 SU against ranked opponents this season with a win over then-No. 19 Memphis followed by losses to No. 2 Duke and No. 16 Missouri.
It has been a rough start for the Monarchs with just one SU win in their first seven games. This past Saturday, they lost to William & Mary 71-62 as three-point road underdogs in their CAA season opener. Old Dominion is ranked in the bottom third of the nation in shooting percentage (40.6) and points per game (63.9).
Saturday, Dec. 8 - No. 2 Duke vs. Temple
Duke ran its record to a perfect 8-0 SU with an 88-50 victory over Delaware this past Saturday as a 20-point home favorite. The Blue Devils are 5-3 ATS and the total has gone OVER in four of their last six games with a posted total line. Mason Plumlee remains the team's leading scorer with an average of 19.6 points while also leading in rebounds with 11 a game.
Temple remained perfect on the year with a 70-62 victory over Wagner this past Saturday. There was no posted line on that game, but the Owls are 2-2 ATS this season. Before facing Duke this Saturday, they will put their 5-0 SU record on the line in a Wednesday night matchup against Villanova. Scootie Randall has been the top Owl so far with an average of 15.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists a game.

College basketball is starting to heat up. We're now into December, and we're starting to see some trends develop, not only from the big guys, but from the little guys as well. Over the years I've tended to focus on the smaller schools, as there is a great sense of continuity with teams who work together for years, rather than the bigger, star-studded rosters with the one-and-dones. I've gotten a better feel for UC-Northridge, as opposed to UCLA. I've found my betting has taken me frequently to the Big South and Southern Conference rather than the ACC and SEC.
As they say, it doesn't really matter what games you're handicapping, as long as you're selecting winners. Give the people what they want.
If you're a bettor of college hoops, there are plenty of little guys that you will not want to overlook. Let's take a look at some of the smaller-school teams which have been running hot and cold.
Appalachian State (1-6 SU, 4-0 ATS): As mentioned, I've taken a real shine to the SoCon over the years. My interest was first piqued when Stephen Curry was at Davidson, and I started dabbling in the conference. Since, I have been a big fan, as there is quality play and, more importantly, money to be made. The Mountaineers have not fared well straight-up, beating Montreat College in a local rivalry game. However, App State has made bettors money, covering huge spreads at East Carolina, at Virginia Tech and most recently at Missouri Saturday, losing 72-56 to the Top 20 Tigers, more than covering a 25.5-point number.
This week: at Western Carolina, Saturday
Arkansas State (4-3 SU, 0-4 ATS): As a guy who attended one of its 10 schools, I have always had an affinity for 'The Belt'. Whether it is football or basketball, I follow all of the teams rather closely. Ark State has been decent this season, especially at home, but they haven't been able to cover the spread at all. They recently lost straight-up and against the spread in their Florida road trip swing to Florida International and Florida Atlantic. They were favored in both games, but couldn't even pull out a straight-up win. In fact, FIU clubbed them 80-61 Thursday, and FAU won 72-65 Saturday. The Red Wolves will host a good St. Bonaventure team Saturday, and it's a good bet that the Bonnies come out on the right end of the spread.
This week: St. Bonaventure, Saturday
Cal-State Northridge (6-2 SU, 7-1 ATS): The Matadors have been gold so far for bettors, covering their first seven games of the season before finally getting their doors blown off at UCLA Wednesday. Along the way, they have recorded straight-up wins against Siena and Tulsa at home, as well as a road win at San Diego. The Mats also picked up a road cover at BYU Nov. 24, by a narrow margin. But, a win is a win. There won't be a spread on their game against NAIA foe, Vanguard University, but they will be traveling to Arizona State Saturday for a game which they're likely to be a double-digit dog. If so, don't sleep on the Matadors.
This week: Vanguard (CA), Wednesday, at Arizona State, Saturday
Canisius (4-1 SU, 2-0 ATS): The Golden Griffins have been playing pretty good basketball, knocking off local rivals St. Bonaventure and Buffalo already this season. For their fans, that has already made their season. For bettors, they are smiling after covers in each of those contests, their only spread-eligible games to date. The Griffs will be on the board this week in conference games against Fairfield and Marist. The Stags of Fairfield are just 1-4-1 ATS so far this season, so remember Canisius for their late-week conference tilt.
This week: at Fairfield, Friday, at Marist, Sunday
Illinois-Chicago (6-1 SU, 6-1 ATS): We've seen Horizon League teams get plenty of action in the past, especially when Butler was part of the league. They have since moved to the A-10, but there are plenty of good teams left in the league. The UIC Flames have been turning the most heads, covering six consecutive games, including a straight-up wins at Northern Illinois and Northwestern this past week. They also have quality wins against strong mid-majors like Iona and Mercer. In fact, that win against the Bears was a complete undressing, beating a good Mercer squad 62-36 back on Nov. 17 in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The only straight-up loss for UIC came at the hands of a solid New Mexico team, and the Flames covered that 16.5-point spread rather handily. They won't be on the betting board Wednesday, but they'll be available Saturday in a home contest.

Florida Gators at Florida State Seminoles (+4)
Archrivals come together in Tallahassee as No. 5 Florida pays a visit to Florida State. The Gators are 6-0 for the ninth time in program history and the fourth time under head coach Billy Donovan, excelling with a stifling team defense that has limited opponents to an SEC-leading 48.5 points per game. Only Stephen F. Austin's defense (44.2) has been more suffocating among Division I schools. The Seminoles rebounded from the disappointment of a season-opening loss to South Alabama with four straight wins but have taken consecutive steps back of late, falling to Minnesota and Mercer at home in their last two games.

ABOUT FLORIDA (6-0, 3-1 ATS): The Gators ran all over Marquette at home last time out, dropping the Golden Eagles 82-49 in Florida's second-highest offensive output of the season. Six players reached double figures for the Gators, led by freshman Michael Frazier II, who totaled 17 points off the Florida bench. The win marked the first time a Gator team had as many as six players score 10 or more since seven accomplished the feat against North Carolina A&T in 2010. Florida has knocked down 47 percent of its field goals, second only to Kentucky (49.2 percent) in the SEC among the top 50 in the nation.
ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (4-3, 3-2 ATS): The Seminoles' loss to Mercer was their first loss to the Bears since 1954 and the latest setback in a troublesome start for the defending ACC champions. Mercer limited senior guard Michael Snaer, Florida State's leading scorer, to just seven points on only six attempts from the field. Snaer enters play against Florida averaging 14.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game - second on the team behind super sub Terrance Shannon, who pulls down 6.9 boards.
