Hot & Not - NL Edition

May 13, 2013

The middle of May is here, and the dog days of summer are approaching. Today, we're using our watchful MLB handicapping eyes to show you the teams that are hot as fire and cold as ice in the National League.

Money-Makers

St. Louis Cardinals (9-2, +$623 in L/11) – For the second time this year, the Cardinals held a team down without a run in back-to-back games. This time though, matters were far more impressive, as they held the Rockies down to a total of three hits in both contest over the weekend. St. Louis enters this week with the best record in the National League.

On Deck: A juicy week and a half is ahead for the Cards, and we would be shocked if they aren't at least at 30 wins the next time we address the NL in two weeks. They've got four with the Mets, three with the Brew Crew, and three in San Diego on the horizon.

Cincinnati Reds (7-2, +$487 in L/9) – That must mean that Dusty Baker and the gang have been playing a lot of games at home of late! The Reds actually started this run with successive wins against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, but that doesn't really change the hard facts. This team is 16-6 at home and 6-10 on the road thus far this season.

On Deck: The bad news is that the Reds are on the road for their next nine games. The good news is that they don't have a series upcoming against a team with a winning record until May 27th. It's all NL East teams between now and then.

Chicago Cubs (4-2, +$369 in L/6) – First baseman Anthony Rizzo has a contract that will keep him with the Cubbies through the end of the decade, and the team won four of six games this week. The bad news? Chicago is still seven-games below .500, and barring the Apocalypse, this won't be the year that all of this Billy Goat nonsense can leave Chi-Town.

On Deck: Don't get used to the winning ways, Cubs fans. Your team was swept the last time it ran up against the Rockies, the team on deck to start off this week.

Money-Burners

Los Angeles Dodgers (4-10, -$893 in L/14) – Can you believe that the Dodgers in their tremendously rich history had never lost eight games in a row to start a month before May 2013? LA is a mess right now, and its bats are amongst the worst in the National League.

On Deck: Three with the Nats and a trip to the East Coast to Atlanta await, and we have a feeling that this is going to turn out to be one of the worst months in the history of this organization when it's said and done with.

Milwaukee Brewers (1-8, -$880 in L/9) – You're not going to find a team that is more bipolar than this one. The Brewers started the year at 2-8, won nine straight games, and since are 5-12 in their last 17.

On Deck: And that's probably only getting worse over the course of the next few weeks. The team plays four at Pittsburgh and three at Busch Stadium this week.

Miami Marlins (1-5, -$370 in L/6) – Since this is nothing new to see the Marlins losing games, we'll just go over some fun stats for them instead. The team ranks dead last in total offense, dead last in team batting average, dead last in team OPS, dead last in team home runs, dead last in errors, and dead last in average attendance in the National League. It's not good when your team has seven more errors than home runs on the campaign.

On Deck: Lots of games as underdogs. Lots of them. The Marlins have been favored exactly zero times this season, and visits from Cincinnati and Arizona aren’t going to change that.

Preview: Padres (16-21) at Orioles (23-15)

Game: 1
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Date: May 14, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

The Baltimore Orioles continue to play well, even though their fragile starting rotation may have taken another hit.

They'll look to Chris Tillman to give them a much-needed strong start when they host the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

Baltimore (23-15) has won six of eight and looks forward to an eight-game homestand - the first two coming versus the Padres - after playing 14 of 17 on the road. The Orioles capped that stretch with a 6-0 win at Minnesota on Sunday, though it was bittersweet.

A strained right oblique forced Wei-Yin Chen to exit after five innings. Chen, who's allowed two runs in 11 1-3 innings over his past two starts, is expected to go on the 15-day disabled list.

With Chen likely sidelined for a couple weeks, the rotation remains Baltimore's primary weakness. The Orioles rank in the top 10 in most offensive categories and their bullpen ERA of 2.64 is also among the best, while their 11 errors are the second fewest.

The starting staff, however, has a 4.70 ERA that's among the highest in baseball. Along with Chen, Tillman (3-1, 3.76) has been one of the few bright spots, winning three straight starts and posting a 2.03 ERA in his past four outings.

The right-hander's ERA in his first three starts was 7.07, but he's pitched at least six innings in his last four games.

"You get your team deep in the ballgame, you feel good about it, whether or not you featured your best stuff," Tillman told the team's official website.

The Padres (16-21) were swept in three games at Tampa over the weekend, the same number of defeats they suffered in the previous 14 games.

San Diego squandered a lead in each loss as it was swept for the fourth time, one shy of last season's total. Closer Huston Street allowed Evan Longoria's winning home run with two outs in the ninth Saturday, and the Rays went ahead Sunday on Yunel Escobar's RBI double in the sixth.

"They were three well-played close games that didn't go our way,' manager Bud Black said. "They got the big hit last night in the ninth. Escobar got a big hit today. So, a couple of pitches back, we win two out of three.'

The Padres struck out 38 times in the series - their most in a three-game set since they had 40 against the New York Yankees from June 17-19, 2008.

Baltimore was much better offensively over the weekend, collecting 20 runs and 41 hits in taking two of three from the Twins.

"We've been swinging the bats well the last few days, and it feels good to win a game by a pretty good margin,' said first baseman Chris Davis, who hit his 11th homer Sunday.

Andrew Cashner (2-2, 3.23 ERA) will be tasked with slowing down the Orioles' lineup. Beginning the season as a reliever after a thumb injury hindered him in spring training, he has a 2.95 ERA in four starts.

The right-hander is coming off the longest outing of his career, allowing four hits in 7 1-3 innings of a 5-0 victory over Miami last Monday.

Nick Markakis has gone 11 for 25 in six games against the Padres and is a career .351 hitter in interleague play.

The Orioles own a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series with San Diego.

Preview: Astros (10-29) at Tigers (21-15)

Game: 2
Venue: Comerica Park
Date: May 14, 2013 7:08 PM EDT

While Doug Fister looks to bounce back from his first loss, the Detroit Tigers will try to pound Houston Astros starter Lucas Harrell for the second time in 10 days.

The Tigers go for their seventh straight win over the league-worst Astros on Tuesday night at Comerica Park.

After losing four of five to fall into a first-place tie with Cleveland in the AL Central, Detroit (21-15) took the opener of this series 7-2 on Monday to regain a half-game lead following the Indians' doubleheader split with the Yankees.

The Tigers now look to continue their dominance of the Astros (10-29) with Fister (4-1, 3.14 ERA) on the mound after outscoring them 44-10 in winning each of the first five meetings this season.

After limiting opponents to three runs or less in each of his first six starts, the right-hander gave up five runs and eight hits over three innings in a 5-4 loss at Washington on Thursday.

It was his shortest start other than an outing in 2011 when he was taken out after two innings because of a lengthy rain delay.

"It was just lack of executing," Fister said. "I didn't keep the ball down. I got a lot of the plate a lot of the time and they made me pay for it."

In his only career start against Houston, Fister did not receive a decision after allowing three runs and a season-worst nine hits over six innings in a 4-3 win May 3.

The Astros, who have dropped 12 of 13 on the road, will try to avoid matching a season high with their sixth straight defeat overall.

Harrell (3-3, 4.67) allowed eight runs and 10 hits over 4 1-3 innings in a 17-2 loss to the Tigers on May 4, but he's 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA in his other five starts since mid-April.

Miguel Cabrera, Torii Hunter and Omar Infante each had two hits in as many at_bats against the right-hander in that rout, with Cabrera hitting a two-run homer. Cabrera had his 11-game hit streak end Monday when he went 0 for 4.

Harrell, who makes his first start at Comerica Park, will try to give Houston a lift a night after top starter Bud Norris went down after five innings with lower back spasms.

Harrell won't have to deal with center fielder Austin Jackson after Detroit placed its leadoff man on the 15-day disabled list because of a pulled hamstring Monday.

Don Kelly was in center field and Andy Dirks went 3 for 4 with his first career grand slam while filling in at the leadoff spot.

"I've hit leadoff in college and I've hit leadoff in the big leagues and in the minor leagues," Dirks said. "It's really nothing different."

Houston may also be missing a key part of its lineup after second baseman Jose Altuve left with a jaw injury following a collision with right fielder Jimmy Paredes in the second inning Monday.

Altuve has been a bright spot with a team-best .333 batting average, and he went 3 for 4 against Fister on May 3.

"Altuve came out for precautionary reasons, and he's already told me that he's playing tomorrow," manager Bo Porter said.

Porter's club has struggled against Detroit this season with a .181 batting average and seven extra-base hits.

Preview: Mariners (18-20) at Yankees (24-14)

Game: 1
Venue: Yankee Stadium
Date: May 14, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

Unbeatable in recent outings, Felix Hernandez will try to stay hot by continuing his recent success against the New York Yankees. The Seattle Mariners ace, though, might have a considerable challenge in this upcoming game at Yankee Stadium.

That's because the Yankees' CC Sabathia will also be seeking his ninth win in as many starts against Seattle in Tuesday night's series opener.

Hernandez (5-2, 1.53 ERA) improved to 4-0 with a 0.71 ERA in his last five starts after a 2-1 victory in Pittsburgh on Wednesday. He's earned three of those wins on the road while allowing one run in 22 innings.

Hernandez is 4-1 with a 1.13 ERA in his last five road starts against the Yankees (24-14) and threw a two-hitter at Yankee Stadium in his most recent matchup with New York on Aug. 4.

He's also 7-2 with a 2.19 ERA in his last 10 overall starts against the Yankees.

Hernandez, though, might have to outduel Sabathia (4-3, 3.23) in this one. The New York left-hander has posted a 1.20 ERA while winning his past eight matchups with Seattle (18-20) and is 4-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his last four meetings in New York.

"That's a big matchup right there," Hernandez told the team's website. "I just have to go out there and match him and do whatever we have to do to win the game."

Hernandez will have the benefit of a little extra rest thanks to the Mariners' pair of off days since his most recent start, and Sabathia could come into this outing a little fresher than usual as well.

Sabathia had his latest start Thursday in Colorado cut short by a lengthy rain delay. He allowed one run, one hit and one walk over four innings in a 3-1 victory.

The Yankees had a season-high five-game win streak snapped with a 1-0 loss in the opener of Monday's doubleheader in Cleveland, but bounced back with a 7-0 rout in the finale.

Vernon Wells had a pair of RBIs and Lyle Overbay hit a two-run double in a six-run seventh inning. The two contests were added to a six-game trip after New York was rained out twice in Cleveland in April.

"This is a great road trip for us," manager Joe Girardi said. "We played three teams that were playing well. Colorado was a game or two out when we played them. Kansas City was tied for first and these guys are in first. To do that, it's a really good road trip."

Girardi's club might get a boost during the series if Curtis Granderson can return from a fractured right forearm. The outfielder has been rehabbing at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but when he will return is unknown.

"I've always said when Grandy feels that he's ready, then come on," said Girardi, who planned to speak with GM Brian Cashman about the center fielder. "We want him back in our lineup. If he feels he's ready to go, he's ready to go."

The Mariners enter this game having won nine of 13 but are 7-11 away from home this season and went 3-2 on their most recent road trip. They're 3-8 in their last 11 road games against the Yankees and went 3-6 overall in last season's series.

Hernandez earned two of those wins while allowing two runs over 16 1-3 innings. Sabathia gave up three runs and three hits in a complete game in his only matchup with Seattle in 2012, a 6-3 win at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 3.

Preview: Giants (23-15) at Blue Jays (15-24)

Game: 1
Venue: Rogers Centre
Date: May 14, 2013 7:07 PM EDT

A matchup of Cy Young Award winners will take a backseat to an unusual reunion for the San Francisco Giants.

Outfielder Melky Cabrera, suspended for drug use last season and now with the Toronto Blue Jays, faces his former team for the first time Tuesday night in Canada.

San Francisco's Barry Zito (3-1, 2.75 ERA) and Toronto's R.A. Dickey (2-5, 5.06) will start the opener of this two-game set, and Cabrera is expected to receive a World Series ring from Giants manager Bruce Bochy beforehand.

Cabrera was suspended 50 games Aug. 15 for a positive testosterone test. The MVP of last year's All-Star game, he was left off the Giants' postseason roster.

The outfielder also made the unprecedented move of disqualifying himself for the NL batting title. He hit .346 for San Francisco (23-15), and the Giants' Buster Posey ended up winning the crown by leading the major leagues at .336.

Bochy said that he intends to speak with Cabrera and thank him for his contributions to the reigning World Series champions.

"I'm appreciative of him being here and playing hard every day,' Bochy said. "What's happened, happened. That's behind us. I do know he's a good person, he is, and he was a good teammate. I will thank him for that.'

Cabrera signed a $16 million, two-year deal with Toronto (15-24) in the offseason.

"They called me and they told me that they would give me a ring," he told the Blue Jays' official website. "I asked them to ship it and they said, 'No, we're going to give it to you when we go to Toronto.' It's special for me."

Cabrera started off slow, but has posted a .353 average in his last eight games while playing with pain in his hamstrings. He is 0 for 4 against Zito.

"I know I'm going to see a lot of my friends there, and I'm going to say hi to those guys, but I've got to continue to play the game I have been doing so far," Cabrera said.

Along with Cabrera, Zito will have to be careful with Edwin Encarnacion, 4 for 7 with two homers against him.

The left-hander is second all-time with 20 interleague losses, going 5-12 with a 6.75 ERA in 17 such outings for the Giants. Zito has been sharp this year, allowing one or no earned runs in six starts.

Dickey, who won the NL Cy Young Award with the New York Mets last year, has gone 0-3 with a 5.76 ERA over his last four starts. He owns a 6.75 ERA at home as opposed to 3.55 on the road.

San Francisco has won 10 of 13 as it opens a six-game trip. Former Blue Jays infielder Marco Scutaro has gone 23 for 48 (.479) during a 12-game hitting streak.

Though Toronto is in last place, it's among the MLB leaders with 51 homers. The Jays matched a season high with five in a 12-4 win at Boston on Sunday, with Jose Bautista hitting two.

Preview: Indians (21-16) at Phillies (18-21)

Game: 1
Venue: Citizens Bank Park
Date: May 14, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

The Cleveland Indians head into Philadelphia as one of the hottest teams in baseball and are hoping to stay that way by repeating their most recent performances against the Phillies.

The Indians will seek their 14th win in 18 contests in the opener of a two-game series Tuesday night.

Cleveland (21-16) earned another victory in its brief return home Monday as Jason Kipnis hit a solo home run in a 1-0 win over the New York Yankees. The Indians, though, fell 7-0 in the finale of a doubleheader that was required because of a pair of rainouts in April.

The Indians are visiting Philadelphia with four wins in their last five on the road and will try to add to that by duplicating their splendid performance earlier this season against the Phillies (18-21).

Cleveland outscored Philadelphia 20-2 and posted a 31-8 advantage in hits during a two-game home sweep April 30-May 1.

The Indians will try to win another game with help from Scott Kazmir (2-1, 4.87 ERA), who will seek his third victory in as many starts. The left-hander gave up one run and five hits over six innings in a 9-2 win over Oakland on Thursday.

Kazmir has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last three outings.

"I just feel comfortable, and I feel confident out there," Kazmir told the team's official website. "And I feel like it's going to get better and better."

Kazmir is 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA in three starts against Philadelphia. He hasn't faced the Phillies since making two starts in the 2008 World Series while with Tampa Bay.

In this matchup, he'll pitch opposite 22-year-old rookie Jonathan Pettibone (2-0, 3.63). The right-hander has given up three runs or fewer in each of his first four major league starts but did not get a decision in a 4-3 loss in San Francisco on Wednesday.

Pettibone gave up three runs, seven hits and a career-high four walks in 5 2-3 innings. The Phillies had won in each of his other three outings.

"Kind of each time out, you get more and more comfortable," Pettibone told the Phillies' official website. "Your confidence gets up each time out. You just kind of build off that. From there, I don't really know what's going to happen. All you can do is focus start to start and go from there."

Pettibone will next try to help Philadelphia to its third three-game win streak in 2013. The Phillies matched a season best with 15 hits in a 4-2 win in 10 innings at Arizona on Sunday.

Ryan Howard hit a two-run single in the 10th after going hitless with 10 strikeouts in his previous 18 at_bats.

"My frustration level coming in to today? I don't know if I can really put a number on it," Howard said. "It's definitely been frustrating. Upset. Ticked off. But you just try to keep separating each at-bat. And I was able to get one to fall."

Philadelphia is hosting Cleveland for the second time. The Phillies recorded a three-game sweep in the other visit June 22-24, 2010.

Preview: Brewers (16-20) at Pirates (21-17)

Game: 2
Venue: PNC Park
Date: May 14, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

Runs have been difficult to come by at times for the Milwaukee Brewers, and scoring essentially has been a problem each time Kyle Lohse pitches.

Reversing that trend, though, may not be easy against Pittsburgh Pirates starter Jeff Locke, who takes the mound at home Tuesday night.

The Brewers (16-20) have been outscored by 25 runs while losing nine of 11 this month, beginning with a 6-4 defeat to Pittsburgh on May 1 that marks the Pirates' only victory in the last 11 meetings.

Milwaukee's scoring woes surface mainly when Lohse (1-4, 3.53 ERA) is on the hill, as he's received one or no runs of support five times in his seven starts.

Lohse, though, has posted a 4.93 ERA while suffering the loss in each of his last three outings. However, he's received 12 runs of support through 43 1-3 innings on the season.

"It's not something that I'm going around hanging my head about or saying anything," Lohse said after giving up four runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 4-1 loss to Texas on Wednesday.

"I don't worry about what our offense does. I've got to concentrate on what I'm doing out there. That's all I can control."

The right-hander has pitched well in his last five starts against Pittsburgh, going 4-0 with a 3.00 ERA. He likely hopes the offense can produce similarly to Monday, as Milwaukee beat the Pirates 5-1 in the series opener.

Norichika Aoki went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and young shortstop Jean Segura added three hits and three stolen bases for the Brewers, who played without Ryan Braun as he was given the night off to rest his sore neck.

Milwaukee stole six bases, with Aoki adding a pair and Carlos Gomez swiping another.

"It's the same as every night, we just try to stay aggressive on the basepaths and if you can go for the next base, we go for it," Aoki said.

Generating offense may be difficult against Locke, though.

Locke (3-1, 2.95) is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA over his last four starts after giving up one run in six innings of Pittsburgh's 3-2 loss to the New York Mets on Thursday. He's allowed three hits or fewer in each of those outings while posting an average of 0.88 walks and hits per inning in that stretch.

The left-hander has allowed one run or none in four of his seven starts.

Locke gave up five runs in four innings, including a two-run homer to Gomez, while falling 7-3 on Sept. 28, 2011, in his only start against the Brewers.

Segura is hitting an NL-best .368 with Gomez second at .367, and they'll look to improve those marks against a Pittsburgh team that had its three-game winning streak snapped Monday.

The Pirates (21-17) have lost four of five at home after mustering four hits, their fewest since also finishing with four in a 6-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 7.

Andrew McCutchen, Starling Marte and Neil Walker each went 0 for 4.

"This has not been the norm, this has been abnormal for us," manager Clint Hurdle said. "I'm going to go, take a shower, head to the house and get ready to play tomorrow."

The Pirates have lost five straight home meetings with the Brewers.

Preview: Reds (22-16) at Marlins (11-27)

Game: 1
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: May 14, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

The Cincinnati Reds have never lost a road game against the Miami Marlins when they have faced Ricky Nolasco.

The problem is that Cincinnati's Homer Bailey is struggling away from home.

Those starters match up Tuesday night in Miami when the surging Reds and Marlins begin a three-game set that will complete the season series.

Cincinnati (22-16) has won seven of nine and has to like its chances against Nolasco (2-4, 3.72 ERA), who is 0-1 with a 6.46 ERA in four home starts versus the Reds - who have batted .337 while winning all of those games.

Miami (11-27) is 2-6 in Nolasco's starts this season. The right-hander, though, turned in one of his best efforts Wednesday as he gave up one run over seven innings with a season-high nine strikeouts in a 1-0 loss at San Diego.

"I've been making some adjustments between starts, and I'm getting closer and closer to where I used to be," Nolasco told the Marlins' official website. "It's time to turn it up on my behalf. I've got to dig deep."

Bailey (1-3, 3.83), meanwhile, has posted a 6.23 ERA in losing all three 2013 road outings. He's winless in his last six starts overall after allowing four runs in five innings last Tuesday in a 5-4 victory over Atlanta.

The right-hander gave up two runs over six innings April 21 and did not receive a decision in a 10-6 win over Miami. This will be his first start at Marlins Park after going 0-1 with a 5.84 ERA in two previous road starts in this series.

Cincinnati outscored Miami 25-11 in winning three of four last month. Joey Votto went 8 for 17 with two homers and four RBIs and Shin-Soo Choo was 8 for 14 with four extra-base hits.

Votto is 6 for 20 against Nolasco while Choo has never faced the Miami starter.

Cincinnati only needed six hits in Sunday's 5-1 victory that completed a sweep of Milwaukee. Rookie Donald Lutz had the big blow with a three-run homer.

"What can I say, a win's a win," manager Dusty Baker said. "I'd like everybody to hit because that makes it exciting and makes it a lot easier on our pitching staff but as long as we score one more run than they score (it's OK)."

Jay Bruce has not driven in a run over seven straight games against Miami, but he's recorded 10 of his 21 RBIs over his last nine games.

The punchless Marlins remain last in the majors with 2.8 runs per game. They are expected to reinstate catcher Jeff Mathis from the disabled list Tuesday, but Mathis is a career .198 hitter so he likely won't help alleviate those woes.

"We're pitching on pins and needles,' manager Mike Redmond said. "It's tough on the bullpen and tough on your offense.'

Justin Ruggiano leads the Marlins with seven homers and 16 RBIs, but he's failed to go deep at home - where he owns a .261 slugging percentage.

Preview: Red Sox (22-16) at Rays (19-18)

Game: 1
Venue: Tropicana Field
Date: May 14, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox appear to be much different clubs than they were after Boston's sweep of their three-game series last month.

The Rays aim for their sixth straight victory Tuesday night when they host the reeling Red Sox.

Boston's sweep from April 13-15 saw the Red Sox improve to 8-4 while the Rays fell to 4-8. Tampa Bay (19-18) is 15-10 since with Sunday's 4-2 win over the Padres putting them over .500 for the first time since April 6.

A big part of the Rays' early struggles involved a fragile bullpen, which blew six of its first 10 save opportunities and had an AL-worst 5.19 ERA through last Tuesday. But the relievers have posted a 1.15 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 15 2-3 innings during the current winning streak, including three shutout innings against San Diego on Sunday.

Their 2.88 ERA last year led the AL.

"You can never lose that confidence in your bullpen," utilityman Sean Rodriguez said. "They've earned that respect from us."

The offensive production has also been strong of late, with the Rays averaging 6.4 runs in their last 14 games. They've done a good job behind Tuesday's starter Matt Moore (6-0, 2.14 ERA), providing him with 7.07 runs of support per nine innings - among the majors' best marks.

Moore hasn't needed nearly that much, though his command continues to elude him. He's walking 4.93 batters per nine innings and issued four walks while allowing two runs and six hits over five innings in a 10-4 win over Toronto on Wednesday.

"I was fighting a lot of different things tonight, mostly my control," said Moore, who was 0-2 with a 6.57 ERA in two starts against Boston last season, allowing four homers.

The Red Sox (22-16) have lost 8 of 10 after a 12-4 loss to the Blue Jays on Sunday, further distancing themselves from a 20-8 start. David Ortiz's early success has also slowed, and he was given a day off in the finale against Toronto while in the midst of a 1-for-20 slide.

Ortiz, who is 4 for 7 off Moore, hit .414 with four home runs and 17 RBIs in his first 15 games.

"I think we've got a number of guys dealing with frustration right now. There's no question about it," manager John Farrell said. "The key for us is maintaining our level of preparation and our work routine. Those are the two things that we can control."

Boston will start John Lackey (1-3, 2.82), who is coming off his own frustrating outing. He gave up one run through the first five innings against Minnesota on Thursday, then gave way to four unearned runs in the sixth after sailing a throw to second base into center field.

Lackey is 12-6 versus the Rays but 3-5 with a 7.27 ERA over the last eight meetings. Ben Zobrist and Yunel Escobar are a combined 13 for 31 off of Lackey while Luke Scott is 6 for 16 with three doubles and two homers.

Outfielder Desmond Jennings was absent from the Rays' lineup for the third game in a row Sunday due to a mild groin strain, but manager Joe Maddon said he's likely to return Tuesday.

Preview: Rockies (20-18) at Cubs (16-22)

Game: 2
Venue: Wrigley Field
Date: May 14, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

More often than not, Carlos Villanueva has helped the Chicago Cubs carry a lead into the later innings only to see it vanish after he exits.

Lately it seems any pitcher can shut down the sputtering Colorado Rockies' lineup, though.

Chicago seeks a season-best fourth straight victory as Villanueva takes the mound Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs' starting rotation ranks fifth in the majors with a 3.40 ERA, but the bullpen's 4.13 mark and nine blown saves have been a disappointment.

Villanueva (1-2, 3.02 ERA) has left five of his seven starts with a lead, and he exited with two outs in the seventh inning holding a one-run advantage Thursday before the bullpen gave up a pair of runs in a 5-4 loss to St. Louis.

Chicago (16-22) was two outs away from its first shutout since Aug. 26 on Monday, but reliever Carlos Marmol allowed a homer to Josh Rutledge and the Cubs won 9-1.

"I have all the confidence in the world in (the bullpen)," Villanueva told the team's official website. "(But) you ask any (pitcher), and we never want to come out of a game, even though we should come out."

The Rockies seem to have trouble scoring no matter who the opposition sends to the mound. They've lost five of six while scoring four runs in the defeats. After seemingly ending the slump with Sunday's 8-2 win at St. Louis, Colorado (20-18) finished with three hits Monday.

Troy Tulowitzki went hitless and is 1 for 14 over his last four games.

"We need to be more consistent. We've struggled, there's no question, lately offensively," manager Walt Weiss said. "It looked like (Sunday) we busted out, but we need to be a little more consistent and put together some offense on a daily basis."

Tulowitzki, though, is 3 for 4 with two homers and a double off Villanueva, who has a 10.05 ERA in 11 appearances - no starts - against the Rockies.

The offense may need to step up with Jeff Francis (1-3, 6.90) on the mound as he looks to snap out of a personal funk.

Since beating San Diego in his first start April 5, Francis has allowed a .347 opponents' batting average with an 8.25 ERA in six outings. He was pitching relatively well in his last start but didn't return following a rain delay after giving up two runs in four innings of a 3-1 loss to the New York Yankees on Thursday.

"I executed some good pitches, but it's four innings," Francis said. "It's not really a long time to get a judgment."

The left-hander hasn't been very good at Wrigley Field, posting an 8.44 ERA in four starts. He's 1-0 with a 7.67 ERA in six outings against the Cubs, who set a season high for runs Monday.

Six players had two hits including Alfonso Soriano, who hit a two-run homer and is batting .340 with three home runs and six doubles over his last 12 games.

Anthony Rizzo went 1 for 5 after signing a seven-year, $41 contract extension, not including incentives.

Chicago has won 15 of 19 home meetings with Colorado.

Preview: White Sox (15-21) at Twins (18-17)

Game: 5
Venue: Target Field
Date: May 14, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

Rookie Aaron Hicks may own one of the lowest batting averages in the majors, but he's finding success against the Chicago White Sox.

That's fairly common for Joe Mauer.

Hicks will try to build on his best performance in the majors, while Mauer looks to extend his hitting streak to 13 games as the Twins host the White Sox on Tuesday night.

Hicks, a first-round pick by Minnesota in 2008, has a .152 average to rank only ahead of Chicago's Adam Dunn (.133) for the AL's worst. However, the 23-year-old center fielder is 5 for 15 with five RBIs over his past four games, and he's coming off his best effort yet in Monday's opener of this three-game set

Hicks went 2 for 3 with a pair of solo homers and robbed a potential two-run shot by Dunn in the sixth inning as the Twins (18-17) won 10-3.

"We've definitely had our share of great ones here and that ranks right up there," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "That catch is going to rank right up there, especially the moment he caught the ball. A big moment, a big play."

Hicks is 3 for 9 with three RBIs, four runs and four walks in three games against the White Sox (15-21).

Mauer regularly pounds Chicago, hitting .357 with a .456 on-base percentage over his last 49 meetings with the AL Central rival. He's batting .447 with 13 runs and 11 walks during his hitting streak.

"(I'm) just putting together good at_bats and seeing pitches and putting good swings on it," Mauer told the team's official website after being walked three times Monday, bringing his total to 15 over his past nine games against the White Sox.

Mauer has been productive recently against Jake Peavy, Chicago's scheduled starter. He's 5 for 14 with five walks in their matchups since last year, and he's the only current Twin to homer off him.

Hicks is 0 for 2 with a walk against Peavy (4-1, 3.03 ERA).

Peavy is 4-0 with a 1.64 ERA over his last five starts against Minnesota. The right-hander was outstanding April 20, yielding one run with nine strikeouts in seven innings of a 2-1 loss in 10.

Back spasms have limited Peavy to two starts since, but he seemed fine in Wednesday's 6-3 road win over the New York Mets. The only run he allowed came on a solo homer in the second inning before leaving with two outs in the seventh.

Peavy has won three straight decisions, compiling a 1.98 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 27 1-3 innings over his last four starts. He last won four decisions in a row during a single season when he won his final four starts in 2009.

Minnesota is scheduled to give Kevin Correia (4-2, 3.09) his first start against the White Sox.

The right-hander has won four of his last five outings, but he's split his last two behind a 6.10 ERA while being pulled before completing the sixth inning. Correia was credited with Thursday's 5-3 win at Boston after allowing three runs and a season-high nine hits in 5 1-3 innings.

A return to Target Field could help Correia to another victory. He's 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA over four starts there this year, tossing at least seven innings in each.

Dunn is 3 for 9 with a homer against Correia, but they haven't met since 2009.

Preview: Mets (14-21) at Cardinals (24-13)

Game: 2
Venue: Busch Stadium
Date: May 14, 2013 8:15 PM EDT

With the New York Mets continuing to struggle offensively, John Gast couldn't have asked for a better spot to make his major league debut for the St. Louis Cardinals.

The left-hander hopes to fit right into the best starting rotation in baseball and help the Cardinals to their 11th win in 13 games Tuesday night against the visiting Mets.

NL Central-leading St. Louis (24-13) is expected to place right-hander Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation and call up Gast for his first big league start as this four-game series continues.

Westbrook had been trying to ignore elbow pain since spring training, but finally decided to take a break after allowing three earned runs in 5 1-3 innings in a 5-4 win over the Cubs on Wednesday.

The injury opens the door for Gast, who looks to make the most of his opportunity in a St. Louis rotation that leads the majors with a 2.25 ERA.

"He just continues to improve," manager Mike Matheny told the team's official website. "He's been just a quality pitcher. He's got a good arm and knows how to pitch. He's smart."

Gast will try to pick up where he left off at Triple-A Memphis, where he was 3-1 with 1.16 ERA in six starts.

The 2010 sixth-round pick from Florida State was named the organization's minor league player of the month in April after opening the season with 32 consecutive scoreless innings.

"I obviously started pretty well," Gast said. "It's been unbelievable so far. Just another year of getting better and executing more and more, a higher percentage of the pitches."

With his parents expected to make the trip from Florida, the 24-year-old Gast hopes to take advantage of his matchup against a light-hitting New York team that has totaled 10 runs during a four-game losing streak.

The Mets (14-21) were limited to four hits for the second consecutive game, falling 6-3 in Monday's series opener. It was the 10th loss in 13 games at Busch Stadium for New York, which has averaged 2.6 runs and hit .202 while dropping six of eight overall.

Starting in center field just after being signed by the club, Rick Ankiel provided little help by going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts in his Mets debut.

Catcher John Buck struck out three times and has whiffed 13 times during his 2-for-25 drought over the last seven games.

Daniel Murphy, though, broke out with three hits - including a two-run double - after going 3 for 27 in his previous eight contests. He's 9 for 17 with a home run and four RBIs in his last four contests versus St. Louis.

Scheduled starter Dillon Gee (2-4, 5.55 ERA) had allowed eight runs and 16 hits over 11 innings in his prior two starts before giving up one run and five hits over five innings, leaving without a decision in a 3-2 win over Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Gee has yielded four earned runs and nine hits over 14 innings in two career starts against the Cardinals, though he'll make his first appearance at Busch Stadium.

Matt Carpenter, who had two hits and two RBIs Monday, is 9 for 19 with two doubles and three RBIs in his last five home games.

Matt Holliday went 2 for 4 with a homer in the opener and is 6 for 15 in his past four against New York.

Preview: Braves (22-16) at Diamondbacks (21-18)

Game: 2
Venue: Chase Field
Date: May 14, 2013 9:40 PM EDT

Patrick Corbin has been a revelation for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but they're not surprised.

The left-hander looks to continue his spectacular stretch Tuesday night when he faces Justin Upton and the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves.

Corbin (5-0, 1.75 ERA) has been one of the best pitchers in baseball, an unexpected status after he went 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA and a save in 22 games - 17 starts - last year.

His inclusion in Arizona's rotation wasn't guaranteed, either. Corbin won a spot coming out of spring training, and has since become the first pitcher to throw at least six innings and allow two or fewer runs in his first seven starts of the season since Ubaldo Jimenez had 12 straight such outings for Colorado in 2010.

The Diamondbacks (21-18) are also unbeaten with Corbin on the mound.

"We're not surprised. That's why he's on the team," manager Kirk Gibson said. "We've got complete confidence in him. He's thrown the ball this way all year. He's got a great head on his shoulders. He's a total pitcher, total ballplayer."

Corbin yielded one run and four hits in 6 1-3 innings of Thursday's 2-1 victory over Philadelphia.

"Last year I learned I could pitch in this league and I'm taking it to this league," Corbin said. "Every time I go out there I want to keep the team in the ball game, eat up some innings and give them a chance to win.

"One thing that I've learned is if you can locate your heater, everything else is better."

Corbin's only meeting with Atlanta came June 28, when he tossed three scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts in a 3-2 road win.

This time, he's facing a team that pounded out 13 hits with four doubles and three homers to coast to a 10-1 win in the opener of this three-game series. The Braves matched their highest scoring output of the season after they were outscored 23-4 during three straight losses at San Francisco.

Upton is looking to build on his own impressive display at the plate. He went 4 for 5 with a double, a homer and two RBIs Monday in his first game in Phoenix since the Diamondbacks sent him to Atlanta in a seven-player trade in January.

"It was mixed and that was what I expected," Upton said. "It is what it is. I tried to have fun with it. This time the fans were yelling at me instead of cheering me, but it was good.

"We've been scuffling to score some runs on this road trip so to go and score some runs feels nice."

Upton has a .458 average with five homers and 11 RBIs in his last 12 games at Chase Field.

Atlanta will give the ball to Julio Teheran (2-0, 4.84) looking to improve to 7-0 with him on the mound.

An adjustment to the grip on his changeup produced another strong start from the 22-year-old rookie right-hander, who allowed three runs in seven innings of Thursday's 6-3 win over the Giants.

"It's such a key pitch for a starting pitcher," bench coach Carlos Tosca told the team's official website. "It allows you to get to your other pitches. It allows you to keep them off-balance."

Teheran gave up two runs and six hits in four innings while not getting a decision in a 5-4 loss at Arizona on May 18, 2011, his only meeting with the Diamondbacks.

He'll have to contend with Paul Goldschmidt, who is 10 for 26 with five homers and 10 RBIs in the past eight games.

Preview: Royals (19-16) at Angels (14-24)

Game: 2
Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Date: May 14, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

Looking to string a pair of wins together to open their West Coast road trip, the Kansas City Royals have to be feeling good about their chances with the seemingly unbeatable Jeremy Guthrie on the mound.

Guthrie will try to extend his franchise-record streak of consecutive starts without a loss Tuesday night against a Los Angeles Angels team that has been in a rut offensively.

Kansas City (19-16) had dropped three in a row and six of seven before opening its nine-game trip with an 11-4 victory in Anaheim on Monday.

Billy Butler broke out of a 4-for-35 slump with the second five-hit game of his career and five RBIs as the Royals reached a double-digit run total for the first time since April 5

"I knew I had been getting closer, but it's just one game,' said Butler, who is 6 for 13 with two homers lifetime against Tuesday's scheduled starter Jason Vargas. "You've got to come out and do it consistently. Hopefully I'm on that upward streak now.'

The Royals should have a decent chance to win back-to-back contests for the first time since a four-game run April 30-May 5, having won four straight Guthrie (5-0, 2.28 ERA) starts and six of his seven outings overall.

Guthrie also hopes to continue his historic stretch, going 10-0 with a 2.21 ERA during a franchise-record 18 straight starts without a loss since Aug. 8.

The right-hander gave up a run for the first time in three starts Thursday when he allowed one over six innings in a 6-2 victory at Baltimore.

"I executed a few pitches, made a couple mistakes,' said Guthrie, who is 3-0 with a 0.42 ERA in his last three outings.

Guthrie has made few mistakes against the Angels with a 2-1 record and 2.37 ERA in his last four starts. He's posted those same numbers in four career outings in Anaheim, though he makes his first start there since 2010.

After being one-hit by Chicago's Chris Sale in a 1-0 loss Sunday, the Angels' offensive woes continued in Monday's loss. They managed just three runs and six hits against Luis Mendoza, who entered the contest with a 6.38 ERA.

Los Angeles (14-24), which has lost six of eight home games, has totaled seven runs while hitting .177 with six extra-base hits over its last three contests overall.

Albert Pujols went 1 for 4 in the opener and is hitting .171 since April 21. After batting .161 over his previous 14 games, Josh Hamilton went 2 for 3 Monday and is 7 for 23 with two homers lifetime against Guthrie.

Hamilton, though, is uncertain for Tuesday after leaving in the seventh inning because he was "a little lightheaded,' manager Mike Scioscia said

Shortstop Erick Aybar (hamstring), who is batting .393 in his last 37 games versus Kansas City, is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday.

Vargas (1-3, 4.26) had allowed two runs over 17 innings in back-to-back complete games, but gave up five and 10 hits over 5 2-3 innings before leaving without a decision in the Angels' 6-5 comeback win at Houston on Thursday.

The left-hander has fared well against the Royals, going 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his last four starts while with Seattle.

Alex Gordon is hitting .394 with three homers over his last eight games, but is 1 for 8 lifetime off Vargas.

Preview: Rangers (24-14) at Athletics (20-20)

Game: 2
Venue: O.co Coliseum
Date: May 14, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

The last time Derek Holland stepped on the mound in Oakland, he took the loss on the final day last season to complete the Texas Rangers' stunning collapse.

This time, he won't be nearly under the same type of pressure.

Holland goes for a third consecutive winning start as he tries to help the Rangers end a five-game road losing streak to the Athletics on Tuesday night.

The left-hander gave up three runs - one earned - in 2 2-3 innings of a rare relief outing Oct. 3, when Texas blew a four-run lead to fall 12-5 at Oakland, and relinquish the AL West title on the final day of the regular season last year.

The Rangers, who held a 13-game edge over the A's on June 30, went on to get eliminated in the wild-card round by Baltimore.

They didn't get this three-game set off to a good start Monday, losing 5-1 to snap their four-game winning streak with their fifth straight defeat in Oakland.

Holland (3-2, 2.54 ERA) allowed one run and scattered 10 hits in seven innings of a 4-1 win at Milwaukee on Wednesday. That performance came five days after he pitched eight innings with nine strikeouts in a 7-0 win over Boston.

Despite his performance against the A's on Oct. 3, Holland is 4-1 with a 2.17 ERA over his last nine games - seven starts - against them, winning his last two road starts.

He may not have to deal with Yoenis Cespedes, who hit his seventh homer Monday before exiting in the fifth with a stomach bug.

"It came on during the game," manager Bob Melvin said. "He threw up a couple times in the bathroom. They're calling it a stomach ailment, they don't think it's a stomach virus. They think he should be in good shape to play (Tuesday)."

Cespedes has homered on both of his hits in six at_bats versus Holland. The slugger is batting .369 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 18 career meetings with the Rangers, including a .419 average in 10 home games.

Having Cespedes healthy may be important since Bartolo Colon (3-2, 4.57) is expected to get the ball, and he's compiled an 8.22 ERA over his last three starts - losing the past two while serving up two homers in each.

The veteran right-hander hasn't dropped three straight starts since Aug. 17-28, 2011, with the New York Yankees.

His latest effort may not inspire much confidence in that changing just yet. Colon was tagged for a season-high six runs and eight hits over four innings - his shortest outing of the season - in a 9-2 loss at Cleveland on Thursday.

"He didn't look awful," manager Bob Melvin told the team's official website. "Velocity was there. The balls he got in the middle of the plate, they hit."

Colon went 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA over two starts - both at home - against Texas last year. However, he's allowed Adrian Beltre to go 10 for 31 with four doubles and two homers off him over the last five years.

The third baseman is batting .372 with two homers and 11 RBIs in his past 10 games.

Preview: Nationals (21-17) at Dodgers (15-22)

Game: 2
Venue: Dodger Stadium
Date: May 14, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Dodgers may be one of the better hitting teams in the NL, but they haven't been able to provide much run support for ace Clayton Kershaw.

The former Cy Young winner gets the start at home Tuesday night against a Washington Nationals team that could be without Bryce Harper.

Los Angeles (15-22) has been one of the biggest disappointments of the early season as rumors continue to swirl about manager Don Mattingly being on the hot seat. His team has suffered two losing streaks of at least six games and hasn't beaten any club other than NL-worst Miami all month after falling 6-2 to Washington in Monday's series opener.

The Dodgers, though, are fourth in the NL hitting .263, with Adrian Gonzalez batting .382 during a 10-game hitting streak while Matt Kemp is riding a 12-game run.

However, the team's .223 average with runners in scoring position has contributed to it ranking 28th in the majors with 129 runs scored, and Kershaw (3-2, 1.62 ERA) has felt the brunt of that lack of production.

Kershaw has been especially dominant lately going 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA and 21 strikeouts over his last three starts, but the Dodgers have lost his last two while scoring three runs combined.

The left-hander's 2.10 run support average is the worst in baseball among qualifiers, as Los Angeles has scored just 13 times in his 55 2-3 innings on the hill.

``Every time he steps on the mound, it should be a win," catcher A.J. Ellis told the team's official website. "He's the premier pitcher in all of baseball, and we're letting those games get away that should be wins."

Kershaw allowed two runs in eight innings of a 3-2 win April 27, 2012, the last time he faced the Nationals, though he has a 4.32 ERA in six career starts against them.

Ryan Zimmerman is 4 for 9 off Kershaw and is coming off a three-RBI performance Monday as Washington (21-17) won for the eighth time in 11 games.

It's unclear if the Nationals will have Harper in the lineup for this contest after he received 11 stitches near his chin due to running full speed into the outfield wall in the fifth inning.

Harper, who was playing his second game after missing two with an ingrown toenail, suffered a cut - but no concussion - and did not return.

``I would rather him not go all-out into the wall,' Zimmerman said. "If you play that hard every day, there is something to be said about that. He's going to play a long time and you have to learn to take care of your body. As he grows, he'll learn what to do and what not to do.'

Dan Haren (4-3, 5.17) will get the start for Washington and has posted a 3.15 ERA while winning three straight outings. He beat Detroit 5-4 on Thursday and has been much better of late after going 1-3 with a 7.36 ERA in his first four starts.

The right-hander allowed five runs in five innings but earned an 8-5 win the last time he faced the Dodgers on June 22, and he's 6-5 with a 3.55 ERA in 16 career starts against them.

Washington's victory in the series opener ended a five-game skid at Dodger Stadium.
