Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the week of March 10-16.
Hottest ATS
Denver Nuggets (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS)
The Nuggets were last week’s best bet (4-0 ATS) and they haven’t disappointed their bettors since. Denver has strung together eight consecutive covers and is riding an 11-game winning streak into Chicago on Monday. The Nuggets follow up with another tough road tilt in Oklahoma City on Tuesday.
Coldest ATS
Phoenix Suns (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)
The Suns’ inability to play defense is making them a fade down the stretch. Phoenix has dropped four straight, failing to cover in all four contests as underdogs. The Suns have allowed opponents to score an average of 113 points during the skid. Opponents are scorching the Suns from long range, firing at a league-best 40 percent clip. Phoenix hosts Los Angeles (Lakers), Washington, Minnesota and Brooklyn this week.
Best over play
Indiana Pacers (1-3 SU, 4-0 over/under)
Bettors have been banking on the Pacers’ ability to go low all season, but the team dynamic has changed since Danny Granger returned from injury and oddsmakers have been setting the bar low for Indiana down the stretch. The Pacers have played over in five consecutive games, facing an average total of 187 during that span. Indiana hosts Cleveland Monday before hitting the road for Orlando and Milwaukee.
Best under play
Utah Jazz (2-1 SU, 0-3 over/under)
The surging Lakers have bucked Utah from the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference standings. Every game will be treated as a must-min for the Jazz down the stretch and that usually means closer, low-scoring contests. Utah has three tough games against Knicks, Rockets and Spurs this week.
Scouting the schedule:
-After a Sunday showdown with the Hawks, the Brooklyn Nets embark on a season-long eight-game road trip. The Nets have been a good under play (11-18-1 O/U) away from home.
-The Philadelphia 76ers are way out of contention for a playoff spot in the East and things could get ugly for them down the stretch. The Sixers play 12 of their final 17 games away from Wells Fargo Center and have a dismal 6-23 SU record on the road (12-17 ATS). Philadelphia also has a tendency to play under totals (8-18-3 O/U) away this season.

Monday Tips
March 17, 2013
The Monday NBA card will get most of the focus among bettors with no college basketball to wager on until Tuesday. The Knicks close out their West Coast swing in Utah, while the Nuggets travel to Chicago. We'll start in Beantown as the Heat looks to extend its winning streak to 23.
Heat at Celtics - 8:05 PM EST
Miami picked up its 22nd consecutive victory by holding off Toronto on Sunday afternoon, 108-91 to cash as 7 ½-point favorites. The Heat outscored the Raptors, 32-18 in the final quarter to grab their third win on this five-game road trip. Now, the task doesn't ease up with a visit to Boston, as the Heat lost in their last meeting at TD Garden.
The Celtics played their first game without All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo on January 27, as Boston squeezed past Miami in two overtimes, 100-98 to cover outright as 3 ½-point home underdogs. The Heat split the following two games at Brooklyn and Indiana, but has now run off 22 wins in a row, including 10 straight on the highway (9-1 ATS). Amazingly, the Heat has allowed more than 94 points just once on the road during this hot streak, resulting in seven 'unders.'
Boston will likely be without forward Kevin Garnett, who is suffering from an abductor strain that kept him out of Saturday's home victory over Charlotte. The C's have won 11 straight games at TD Garden, a streak that began with the double-OT triumph over the Heat six weeks ago. In fact, Doc Rivers' team has turned into a money-machine at home in this stretch by posting a 10-1 ATS record, while the lone non-cover came by a half-point.
Nuggets at Bulls - 8:05 PM EST
Advertisement
Chicago returns home following a 1-2 SU/ATS road trip, as the Bulls closed things out with a 113-95 rout of Golden State as four-point 'dogs. The Nuggets invade the Windy City fresh off their 11th straight victory after knocking off the Grizzlies at home on Friday. Denver seeks the season sweep of Chicago, while trying to build some consistency away from the Pepsi Center.
Since losing at Washington in late February, the Nuggets have run off four consecutive away victories to improve to 15-19 on the highway. The last time the Nuggets faced the Bulls, Denver routed Chicago, 128-96 on February 7 to cash as six-point favorites, while picking up their third straight win in the series. George Karl's team hopes not to be in a look-ahead spot with a trip to Oklahoma City on Tuesday, as the Nuggets are just 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS the last five road games against Eastern Conference foes.
The Bulls have had major issues covering numbers at home this season, putting together a 3-6 ATS the past nine at the United Center. Tom Thibodeau's club has won back-to-back games just once since the start of February, while posting a 1-7 SU and 3-5 ATS record in this stretch. After Chicago passes the 100-point mark, the Bulls are just 1-8 the last nine games the following contest dating back to December 22.
Knicks at Jazz - 10:35 PM EST
New York concludes a disastrous five-game road trip in which Carmelo Anthony re-injured his knee and the Knicks haven't found the victory column. The swing ends in Salt Lake City as New York tries not to lose its lead atop the Atlantic Division, as both Anthony and Tyson Chandler will not suit up.
The Jazz have won five straight home games against the Knicks, but New York has cashed in each of its last seven visits to Utah. Tyrone Corbin's club is playing with revenge after getting blown out at Madison Square Garden, 113-84 on March 9, the eighth defeat in the last nine visits to Manhattan. Utah is going for its second straight victory overall after beating Memphis on Saturday, 90-84, while seeking consecutive wins for the first time in a month.
The Knicks are coming off their fourth straight road loss after falling to the Clippers on Sunday, while each time New York failed to cover. Mike Woodson's team is just 4-9 this season against Western Conference opponents away from the Garden, while the last cover came at Phoenix in late December.

Heat at Celtics: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Miami Heat at Boston Celtics (+4.5, 189)
Recent whispers out of Boston Celtics camp suggested that they were not very impressed with the Miami Heat's lengthy winning streak. The Celtics now have a chance to end it when the Heat carry a 22-gamer -- tied for the second longest in NBA history -- into Monday's matchup at TD Garden. Miami rolled to a 108-91 win at Toronto on Sunday, matching the 2007-08 Houston Rockets on the all-time list. Amazingly, Boston ended Houston's streak five years ago to the day.
The Heat's last loss came at Indiana on Feb. 1. Five days earlier, Miami lost an epic double-overtime game at Boston on the day that the Celtics learned that All-Star guard Rajon Rondo was out for the season. Including that victory in the latest chapter of a solid rivalry, Boston has gone 16-6, the latest a 105-88 drubbing of Charlotte on Saturday. That win came without star forward Kevin Garnett, who sat with a left adductor strain. Garnett did not practice Sunday and coach Doc Rivers said his emotional leader is 50/50.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, Sun Sports (Miami) Comcast SportsNet New England (Boston)
ABOUT THE HEAT (51-14): Miami has had a few close calls during the streak but the last two have been cakewalks and the road winning streak is up to 10 games. Dwyane Wade scored 24 points and LeBron James had 22, 12 rebounds and eight assists in the win over the Raptors. The Heat were outrebounded by a remarkable 51-26 margin and were outscored in the paint 62-38. Such statistics matter little when you have shooters and the opponent does not; Miami made 10 of its 22 3-pointers while Toronto was 2-for-20 from long distance. With a win in Boston, the Heat will be 10 shy of matching the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers for the longest winning streak in NBA history.
ABOUT THE CELTICS (36-29): Garnett's absence mattered little to Boston as it sought, and attained, revenge for an ugly loss in Charlotte on Tuesday. Paul Pierce filled up the stat sheet in just three quarters, collecting 14 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three blocks in 23 minutes as the Celtics won their 11th straight at home. That means there is more than just one streak on the line Monday, and Pierce is confident his team's will remain. "We just feel like this is a building we should never lose in," Pierce said Saturday. "Teams coming to the Garden, they've got to know that this is going to be their toughest game of the year. That's the feeling and the swagger that we're bringing." Boston has also won its last 10 regular-season games at home against Miami.
TRENDS:
* Heat are 8-1 ATS in their last nine road games.
* Celtics are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 home games.
* Over is 7-1 in the last eight meetings.
* Under is 4-0 in Heat’s last four road games.
BUZZER BEATERS
1. Miami has held a season-high 10 straight opponents under 100 points.
2. The Celtics are 2-0 without Garnett this season, winning by an average of 21 points. He had 24 points and 11 rebounds in the victory over Miami on Jan. 27.
3. James established a new career high Sunday with his 32nd double-double.

Fullcourt press: Monday's NBA betting news and notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Portland Trail Blazers at Philadelphia 76ers (-1, 195.5)
Philadelphia had dropped 12 of 13 to fall well out of playoff contention in the Eastern Conference, but a stretch of two wins in three games against quality competition has shown that it is not willing to pack it in. The Blazers are trying to win their third straight but have won just one of their last nine away from home. The Sixers are 4-1 ATS in their last five overall and last five home games.
Washington Wizards at Charlotte Bobcats (+6.5, 188.5)
The Wizards have won three straight as part of a five-game home winning streak, but they've lost their last three road games. This is the last of four meetings, with Charlotte holding a 2-1 edge in the series. The Bobcats won the first two contests as part of the Wizards' 0-12 start, but Washington won 104-87 at home in the most recent meeting March 9. The Wizards are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.
Indiana Pacers at Cleveland Cavaliers (+7.5, 189)
The Pacers have won 10 of the last 11 games against the Cavaliers, who are coming off an 0-2 trip to Texas. A 119-113 loss at San Antonio on Saturday was Cleveland's sixth in its last eight games. The vaunted Indiana defense, which entered Sunday ranked second in fewest points allowed per game (90), has given up more than that number in four straight games. The over is 5-0 in the Pacers’ last five overall.
Dallas Mavericks at Atlanta Hawks (-3.5, 201.5)
The Hawks defeated the Mavericks 105-101 in Dallas on Feb. 11. Atlanta has won the last two meetings after Dallas was victorious in 19 of the previous 25. Mavericks forward Shawn Marion (calf) is expected to miss his seventh straight game and backup guard Roddy Beaubois joined him on the injured list by breaking his left hand in Sunday’s loss to the Thunder. Dallas is 5-0 ATS in the second half of back-to-backs this season.
Brooklyn Nets at Detroit Pistons (+3.5, 190.5)
The Brooklyn Nets begin a 17-day, eight-game road trip Monday against the Detroit Pistons, who have lost eight straight games and 11 of their last 12. The Pistons are 0-6 in their last six Monday games and have played over the total in four of their last five overall.
Miami Heat at Boston Celtics (+5, 189.5)
Recent whispers out of Boston Celtics camp suggested that they were not very impressed with the Miami Heat's lengthy winning streak. The Celtics now have a chance to end it when the Heat carry a 22-gamer -- tied for the second longest in NBA history -- into Monday's matchup at TD Garden. Miami rolled to a 108-91 win at Toronto on Sunday, matching the 2007-08 Houston Rockets on the all-time list. Amazingly, Boston ended Houston's streak five years ago to the day. Boston may be without F Kevin Garnett (adductor strain) but that may not be a bad thing. The Celtics are 2-0 without Garnett this season, winning by an average of 21 points. He had 24 points and 11 rebounds in the victory over Miami on Jan. 27. Boston is 10-1 ATS in its last 11 home games.
Denver Nuggets at Chicago Bulls (+3.5, 194.5)
The Denver Nuggets look to match the longest winning streak in franchise history Monday when they visit Chicago. The Nuggets extended their winning streak to 11 games on Friday with an 87-80 win over Memphis. The Bulls are the worst scoring team in the league, but they’re coming off a 113-95 win over the Golden State Warriors on Friday. The over is 7-1 in the Nuggets’ last eight road games.
Minnesota Timberwolves at Memphis Grizzlies (-13, 183)
The Timberwolves are coming off a 97-95 home win over New Orleans and are in search of their first back-to-back victories since winning four straight from Dec. 7-15. Memphis had won 14 of 15 before its current two-game slide. The under is 4-0 in the Grizzlies’ last four home games and 8-1 in the last nine meetings.
Golden State Warriors at New Orleans Hornets (+3.5, 196)
The Hornets would not seem like the type of team capable of running up the score against the Warriors, but neither did the Bulls prior to Friday’s 113-95 final. New Orleans has dropped three straight and six of seven. Golden State has taken the first two meetings, including a 116-112 triumph in New Orleans on Jan. 19. The over is 7-1 in the Hornets’ last eight home games.
Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns (+3, 200.5)
Kobe Bryant (ankle, flu) missed Los Angeles’ victory over the Sacramento Kings on Sunday but the offense clicked well without him as the Lakers won for the 19th time in 26 games. Bryant is likely to sit out again Monday against a Suns squad that has dropped four consecutive games. Phoenix has lost the four games by an average of 20 points and was routed 127-105 by the lowly Washington Wizards on Saturday. The Suns are 1-7 ATS in their last eight games following a loss.
New York Knicks at Utah Jazz (-10, 189)
New York lost both Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler in a loss at Denver last week and has dropped each of the first four games on its current road trip by double figures. Both Anthony and Chandler are questionable and Amar'e Stoudemire is out on Monday, leaving the Knicks shorthanded against one of the better frontcourts in the league. New York has lost five in a row at Utah but is 7-0 ATS in its last seven trips to Salt Lake City.
