Around the rink: Sunday's NHL betting notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chicago Blackhawks at St. Louis Blues (-111, 5)
Probable starting goaltenders: Ray Emery (CHI), Brian Elliott (STL)
Blues G Brian Elliott recorded three consecutive shutouts before watching rookie Jake Allen struggle in the Blues' 4-1 loss to Columbus on Friday. The setback snapped a six-game winning streak for sixth-place St. Louis, which sits one point behind San Jose and one ahead of Minnesota in the congested Western Conference. Elliott extended his impressive shutout streak to 189 minutes, 31 seconds by leading the Blues to a 2-0 triumph over the Wild on Thursday. Chicago has won four straight and leads surging Pittsburgh by just two points in the race for the Presidents' Trophy. The under is 4-0-1 in the Blues’ last five overall.
Tampa Bay Lightning at Buffalo Sabres (-120, 5.5)
Probable starting goaltenders: Mathieu Garon (TB), Ryan Miller (BUF)
The Sabres have collected points in 11 of their last 16 games (8-5-3) heading into Sunday's home tilt against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning rallied from four goals down to forge a tie before dropping a 6-5 overtime loss at Washington on Saturday. Tampa Bay, which sits nine points behind the Rangers and 11 in back of Southeast Division-leading Washington, has allowed 22 goals in a 1-3-1 skid. The teams split a pair of 2-1 results at Tampa Bay earlier this season. The over is 4-1 in the Lightning’s last five overall.
Detroit Red Wings at Nashville Predators (+121, 5)
Probable starting goaltenders: Jimmy Howard (DET), Pekka Rinne (NSH)
Residing outside the top eight in the Western Conference, the Red Wings look to snap a three-game winless skid (0-1-2) on Sunday. The Music City representatives also have been singing sour notes of late, dropping five in a row and eight of nine (1-6-2) to fall seven points behind eighth-place Dallas. The Red Wings are 1-4 in the last five meetings.

Five NHL teams fighting for their playoff lives
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Action is heating up in the NHL and every game is likely to have playoff intensity in the final two weeks of the season.
Here are a few teams fighting for their playoff lives down the stretch:
Winnipeg Jets (21-19-2 SU, 21-21 ATS, 16-25-1 over/under, ninth in East)
Remaining schedule: vs. Tampa Bay, vs. Carolina, vs. Islanders, at Buffalo, at Washington, vs. Montreal
The Jets and Rangers both have 44 points heading into action Saturday, but New York holds the tiebreaker. Winnipeg also trails Washington by two points for the Southeast Division lead. The Jets have a favorable schedule down the stretch and the division title could up for grabs when they square off with the Capitals on April 23.
New Jersey Devils (15-16-10 SU, 19-22 ATS, 16-18-7 over/under, 10th in East)
Remaining schedule: at Toronto, at Philadelphia, vs. Florida, at Rangers, vs. Montreal, vs. Pittsburgh, at Rangers
The Devils have dropped nine straight games to fall out of playoff contention, but it’s not too late for New Jersey to turn things around. The Devils trail the Jets and Rangers by four points for the eighth and final playoff spot heading into action Saturday. New Jersey plays New York (Rangers) twice down the stretch and will need victories in both affairs to have a shot at the playoffs.
Dallas Stars (20-17-3, SU, 24-16 ATS, 21-15-4 over/under, ninth in West)
Remaining schedule: vs. San Jose, at Chicago, vs. Vancouver, at St. Louis, at Los Angeles, at San Jose, vs. Columbus, vs. Detroit
The Stars have won four straight games to catapult them into a three-way tie for ninth in the West. Dallas has found the back of the net 18 times during the win streak and is one of the best puckline bets in the league (24-16 ATS). But bettors beware: The Stars have an incredibly tough schedule down the stretch against quality opponents.
Phoenix Coyotes (18-16-7 SU, 20-21 ATS, 18-18-5 over/under, ninth in West)
Remaining schedule: vs. San Jose, at St. Louis, at Chicago, at Detroit, vs. San Jose, vs. Colorado, at Avalanche
The Coyotes are only 5-9-6 on the road to date and they’ll have to find a way to earn points away from the desert in order to make a push for the playoffs.
Columbus Blue Jackets (18-16-7 SU, 30-11 ATS, 15-24-2 over/under, ninth in West)
Remaining schedule: at Minnesota, at Colorado, at Anaheim, at Los Angeles, at San Jose, at Dallas vs. Nashville
The Blue Jackets play six of their final seven contests on the road where they have been a great under play (6-12 O/U) to date. Bettors have been cashing on Columbus’ league-best 30-11 ATS record all season long.
All stats and schedules prior to action Saturday.

Canucks at Blues: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vancouver Canucks at St. Louis Blues (-139, 5)
Three games into a five-game road trip, the Vancouver Canucks have two wins from Roberto Luongo. The Canucks visit St. Louis on Tuesday to conclude their season series with the Blues. Vancouver is looking for its sixth win in seven games after defeating Nashville 5-2 on Monday to maintain a five-point lead in the Northwest Division. Cory Schneider should be healthy after battling the flu last week and likely will start against St. Louis. The Blues are looking to halt a two-game slide and improve on their precarious playoff position. They trail sixth-place Minnesota by one point but are only one point ahead of ninth-place Columbus.
St. Louis has not scored more than two goals in any of its lasts five games, relying on the stellar play of netminders Brian Elliott and rookie Jake Allen to begin the month on a six-game winning streak. Elliott posted three straight shutouts before allowing two goals on 24 shots in a 2-0 loss to Chicago on Sunday. Allen has lost three of his last four starts but is 9-4-0. Vancouver lost to the Blues 4-3 in a shootout at home on Feb. 17 but defeated St. Louis 3-2 on March 19. The Blues are 9-8-1 at Scottrade Center and have one win in their last four home games.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, Rogers Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)
ABOUT THE CANUCKS (24-12-6, 16-21 over/under): Brothers Henrik and Daniel Sedin have 18 points combined this month. Defenseman Jason Garrison has six points in April to raise his season total to 14. Vancouver is 3-for-10 on the power play in its last three games and 5-for-19 in its last six. Prior to Schneider’s flu, Luongo had not started since March 18 - an 11-game span. Ryan Kesler scored twice on Monday for three goals and six points in four games since returning from a broken foot. Roy scored his first goal with the Canucks in the first period of Monday’s victory.
ABOUT THE BLUES (23-16-2, 19-18 over/under): Jaroslav Halak returned to the ice but is still at least a week away from returning. T.J. Oshie is unlikely to play against Vancouver after missing eight games with a foot injury. Oshie, listed as day-to-day, would provide a boost (20 points in 30 games) to St. Louis’ anemic offense. No Blues player has more than four points this month and leading scorer Chris Stewart has been held to two points in eight games. Rookie Vladimir Tarasenko has one assist in April and has not looked the same since suffering a concussion in February.

* Under is 3-0-1 in the last 4 meetings in St. Louis.
