Around the rink: Monday's NHL betting notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins (-184, 5.5)
Probable starting goaltenders: James Reimer (TOR), Tuukka Rask (BOS)
Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul will return to the lineup after serving a two-game suspension for his hit on Tampa Bay defenseman Victor Hedman. Lupul had been playing well prior to the ban, recording three goals and an assist in two games after being sidelined for 25 with a broken forearm. The Bruins are limping home after mustering just six goals during a 1-3-0 road trip. The under is 7-0-2 in Boston’s last nine overall.
New Jersey Devils at Ottawa Senators (-131, 5)
Probable starting goaltenders: Martin Brodeur (NJ), Ben Bishop (OTT)
The New Jersey Devils will attempt to extend their point streak against the Ottawa Senators to six games. New Jersey is 3-0-2 in its last five meetings with Ottawa, including a shootout loss at home on Feb. 18. The Devils posted their second straight victory Saturday, defeating the Florida Panthers 2-1 but losing star forward Ilya Kovalchuk for two to four weeks with a right shoulder injury. Ottawa has earned points in eight of its last nine home games (7-1-1).
Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks (-133, 5)
Probable starting goaltenders: Jonathan Quick (LAK), Corey Crawford (CHI)
Mired in a scoring drought of 126 minutes, 14 seconds, the Kings will look to get their offense going when they open a five-game road trip at the United Center. After winning the first three contests of its five-game homestand, Los Angeles finished with a thud - getting blanked by both Dallas and Vancouver. The Blackhawks vie for a season sweep of the Kings on Monday. Chicago wasn't rattled after Los Angeles raised its Stanley Cup banner in a 5-2 triumph in the season opener before posting a 3-2 victory on Feb. 17. The over is 5-1 in the Blackhawks’ last six overall.
Edmonton Oilers at Nashville Predators (-140, 5)
Probable starting goaltenders: Devan Dubnyk (EDM), Pekka Rinne (NSH)
The Predators are 8-2-4 at home, where Pekka Rinne has started every game and has a 1.67 goals-against average and .935 save percentage. The Oilers have been shut out three times in March, but their power play remains productive - scoring six times in the last 20 opportunities. The under is 5-0 in Edmonton’s last five Monday games.
Minnesota Wild at Dallas Stars (-111, 6)
Probable starting goaltenders: Niklas Backstrom (MIN), Kari Lehtonen (DAL)
The Dallas Stars continue their five-game homestand - and begin the post-Brenden Morrow era - when they host the Minnesota Wild on Monday. One day after climbing into a playoff spot in the Western Conference, Dallas traded its long-time captain to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. Minnesota has won only three of its last 22 visits to Dallas and each of the last two meetings have been 1-0 decisions at the Xcel Energy Center, with each club claiming a victory. The Wild are 5-0 in their last five overall and 4-0 in their last four road contests.
Detroit Red Wings at Phoenix Coyotes (-135, 5)
Probable starting goaltenders: Jonas Gustavsson (DET), Jason LaBarbera (PHX)
Detroit is rolling on special teams. The Red Wings' power play has registered at least a goal in each of the last seven games and their penalty kill has only yielded two goals in 18 opportunities. The Coyotes are winless in their last five games (0-4-1) and have managed only three goals in that span. Starting goaltender Mike Smith left Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Vancouver after being hit by Daniel Sedin and is considered day-to-day. The Red Wings have won four straight road games.
San Jose Sharks at Anaheim Ducks (-130, 5)
Probable starting goaltenders: Antti Niemi (SJ), Viktor Fasth (ANA)
Anaheim had its franchise-record 13-game home winning streak snapped by Detroit on Friday and lost to the Red Wings at the Honda Center again two days later. One of the highest-scoring teams in the league, the Ducks were held to one goal in each of the setbacks. The Sharks have lost eight of their last 10 meetings with the Ducks and five of their last six visits to Anaheim. The over is 4-1 in Anaheim’s last five home games.

Canadiens at Penguins: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins (-140, 6)
The Pittsburgh Penguins have sailed past the Montreal Canadeins and into first place in the Eastern Conference during their 12-game winning streak. The Canadiens will try to take their revenge when they visit the Penguins on Tuesday. Not content with the winning streak, Pittsburgh has been fortifying its roster with a pair of trades in recent days and hopes to have Brenden Morrow and defenseman Douglas Murray on Tuesday.
Montreal had a seven-game points streak (6-0-1) come to an end with a 2-1 loss to Buffalo on Saturday but has kept its defense in top shape. The Canadiens have not surrendered more than three goals in any of their last eight games and will be trying to shut down a Penguins club that leads the NHL in scoring average. Montreal is kicking off a big two-game road trip in Pittsburgh, with a stop at the Boston Bruins coming up on Wednesday.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN2 (Montreal), ROOT (Pittsburgh), RDS
ABOUT THE CANADIENS (20-6-5): Montreal took a point off the Penguins in one of the more entertaining games of the season - a 7-6 overtime loss at home on March 2. That near miss against coach Michel Therrien’s former team came during a strong offensive stretch for the Canadiens that saw them average 4.4 goals over an eight-game period. They have cooled off over the last four contests, totaling 10 goals, culminating with the 2-1 home loss to the Sabres on Saturday. Each of the last four meetings with Pittsburgh has needed extra time and the Canadiens have come out on top in only one of those matchups. Montreal has allowed at least one goal on the penalty kill in four of the last five games and will be taking on a Penguins team that is near the top of the league on the power play.
ABOUT THE PENGUINS (25-8-0): Morrow was considered one of the big prizes available on the trade market and Pittsburgh swooped in with an offer on Sunday. The former Dallas Stars Captain is expected to join the second line with James Neal and Evgeni Malkin as soon as Malkin returns from an upper-body injury later this week. That will give the Penguins two stacked lines with the Sidney Crosby-Pascal Dupuis- Chris Kunitz unit serving as the top trio. Morrow had totaled 11 points (six goals) in 29 games with the Stars but has experience playing alongside Neal with the Stars and Crosby on Team Canada at the 2010 Olympics. Pittsburgh stayed busy with the deal on Monday for Murray, who was picked up from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a pair of draft picks.
TRENDS:
* Canadiens are 5-0 in their last five road games.
* Penguins are 10-1 in their last 11 vs. Northeast foes.
* Over is 7-1 in Canadiens’ last eight road games.
* Under is 6-0-1 in Penguins’ last seven overall.
OVERTIME
1. The Penguins have eight one-goal wins during their 12-game streak
2. The Canadiens claimed C Jeff Halpern off waivers from the New York Rangers. He could make his debut Tuesday.
3. Pittsburgh D Kris Letang (groin) has missed three straight games. He is day-to-day.

Around the rink: Tuesday's NHL betting notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pens’ 12-game winning streak on the line
The Pittsburgh Penguins are the hottest bet in the NHL right now with 12 straight moneyline victories, a tear that adds up to a profit of $834.92 for the $100-per-game bettor. They opened as -150 home favorites against the Montreal Canadiens tonight,
High-flying Pens suddenly an under team
Tonight marks the 10th time this season the Pens have seen a six-goal total and they have an over/under record of 5-4 in those games.
Pittsburgh usually wins with offense, and league-leading scorer Sidney Crosby has 23 points during the 12-game winning streak, but lately they’ve been clamping down. The under is 5-0-1 in their past six games and the team has only allowed nine goals in their past seven.
Value in the Panthers for savvy bettors
There are two spots the last-place Florida Panthers have been reliable for bettors lately: as a play-against and an under bet.
Six of the last seven games have gone under for Florida while the team struggles to score with 11 players on the injury list. The Panthers are averaging just 1.9 goals for and 3.3 against over the past 10 outings. Despite this, Florida is still regularly seeing 5.5-goal totals - like tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Panthers opened as +150 underdogs.
You’d be up $155.87 if you bet $100 against the Panthers over the past 10 outings.
Caps playing desperate hockey
The Washington Capitals are showing signs of turning their season around with just 12 games remaining and a playoff spot two points out of reach.
The Caps have won three of their past four games and some books have set them higher than -150 favorites against the New York Islanders at home Tuesday night. That’s only the third time this season they’ve been favored that high.
Improved play from Alex Ovechkin and power-play execution are big reasons for the Caps’ improvement. Ovechkin has nine points over his last five games and the PP has scored a goal in each of those games.
Oddsmakers give Hurricanes total a bump
The Carolina Hurricanes are seeing just their third six-goal total of the season when they host the Winnipeg Jets Tuesday night.
It’s a little strange considering the under is 5-0-1 in the Canes’ last six games. The only two other six-goal totals Carolina saw this season came against Tampa Bay and the over/under went 1-1 in those contests.
Carolina has allowed three or more goals in seven of the nine games since losing starting goaltender Cam Ward to a knee injury. The Canes, meanwhile, have only scored six goals in their last five.
Blackhawks have tight turnaround against Flames
The shortened season doesn’t seem to be bothering the Chicago Blackhawks. They're 6-0 straight up on zero days of rest – the spot they’ll be in against the Calgary Flames Tuesday.
This has been a tougher situation on the puckline for Chicago bettors where the club is just 2-4 ATS (against the spread) for a loss of $47 for the $100-per-game bettor.
The Blackhawks opened as -210 favorites tonight and they’ll likely once again be without key forwards Marian Hossa (upper body) and Patrick Sharp (shoulder).
Tampa Bay assistants still behind the bench tonight
The Bolts have named Jon Cooper their new head coach after firing Guy Boucher two days ago, but he won't join the team until Friday. Cooper was with their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, and was the AHL Coach of the Year last season.
Assistants Martin Raymond and Dan Lacroix will coach again for the second straight game after a 3-2 loss to Winnipeg Sunday.
Tampa Bay is a -140 favorite at home against Buffalo, which has won three straight.
Jackets on the rise
The Columbus Blue Jackets moved up eight spots in Sean Murphy’s Covers NHL Power Rankings this week, the biggest move of any team.
They picked up points in 11 straight games – winning five of those as underdogs - before falling to Nashville 3-2 Saturday night.
The CBJ’s are +170 dogs in Vancouver, a team they’ve covered the puckline against in the last four meetings.
Notable under trends for Tuesday:
- Canucks’ last five games have gone under
- The Blues’ last five games have gone under
- The Rangers haven’t seen the over in 10 games. Under is 6-0-4 and all four pushes were five-goal totals.
