Preview: Orioles (15-11) at Mariners (12-16)

Game: 2
Venue: Safeco Field
Date: April 30, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The Baltimore Orioles' eight-game win streak over the Seattle Mariners ended in the opener of this three-game set.

The Orioles could be in position to even the series based on how Jason Hammel has fared on the road.

Already 3-0 through three road outings, Hammel will try to help end the Mariners' season-high win streak at three Tuesday night.

Baltimore (15-11) captured the final eight 2012 meetings between these clubs before Seattle won 6-2 in Monday's contest.

Now Hammel (3-1, 3.82 ERA) looks to remain perfect on the road for the Orioles after posting a 2.50 ERA in his first three starts away from home. He allowed two unearned runs over six innings Thursday in a 10-2 win at Oakland.

Manager Buck Showalter likes the composure Hammel is displaying.

"At this stage in his career, when he gets mad or frustrated he's able to channel it in the right direction," Showalter said.

Hammel is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in three career starts against the Mariners, losing his lone outing against them last season for Baltimore's most recent defeat in this series before Monday.

The right-hander has never faced Michael Saunders, who was activated by Seattle (12-16) on Monday and helped key the victory with a homer and two RBIs after being on the disabled list with a sprained right shoulder. Jason Bay added three hits, improving to 7 for 14 on this homestand.

Mariners second baseman Robert Andino played his first game against the Orioles, with whom he spent his previous four seasons. Andino likes what he is seeing from his current team, with the Mariners winning four of five.

"We've all got a good momentum,' Andino said. "Everybody's pitching in, doing their part, passing the baton and we've got a good flow going on right now."

Matt Wieter's two-run homer in the fourth inning was all the Orioles mustered.

Former Seattle outfielder Adam Jones' hitting streak ended at nine games Monday after he went 0 for 4 for Baltimore. Jones batted .342 with seven RBIs during his run.

Nate McLouth, meanwhile, got the night off after totaling seven hits over his two previous games.

Baltimore may activate catcher Chris Snyder for this game. Snyder, who spent last season with Houston, was acquired Monday from the Angels.

The Orioles will get their first look at Mariners rookie starter Brandon Maurer (2-3, 5.61), who has turned things around dramatically after a rough start to his big-league career. He went 0-2 with a 16.20 ERA in his first two outings before going 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA in his next three.

The latest evidence of that progress came Thursday when the right-hander struck out six over 6 1-3 innings in a 6-0 home win over the Angels.

"I'm getting more comfortable," Maurer told the Mariners' official website. "Just taking deep breaths, trying to stay through with my legs and deliver a pitch."

Seattle hopes more fans will show up after an attendance of 9,818 on Monday - the smallest in the 14-year history of Safeco Field.

Preview: Rockies (16-10) at Dodgers (12-13)

Game: 2
Venue: Dodger Stadium
Date: April 30, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

A pair of former All-Star shortstops might be back in their respective lineups at Chavez Ravine.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are hoping Hanley Ramirez will have the greater impact.

Ramirez could make his first start of the season Tuesday night while Troy Tulowitzki is likely to return for the Colorado Rockies.

Ramirez started the season on the disabled list with a torn ligament in his right thumb suffered during the championship game of the World Baseball Classic. He was activated Monday and struck out in a pinch-hit appearance in a 12-2 loss to the Rockies (16-10).

"I'm ready to go," said Ramirez, who will wear a splint on his thumb. "It's not 100 percent, but I can defend myself on the field. I just want to be in there. I don't want to wait any longer. I think I can play."

Los Angeles (12-13) may be hoping for a jolt of offense from Ramirez since it's hitting .198 over the past six games.

Ramirez, a three-time All-Star, hit .271 with 10 homers and 44 RBIs in 64 games after the Dodgers acquired him from Miami in a four-player trade in July.

He's batting .354 with 10 runs and five stolen bases over his last 13 meetings with the Rockies, who may welcome back Tulowitzki after he sat out Monday's game.

Tulowitzki hurt his shoulder on an awkward slide into home in the first inning of Sunday's 4-2 loss at Arizona.

The two-time All-Star has a .308 average with six homers and a team-high 22 RBIs, though he doesn't have one in his last five matchups with Los Angeles while going 3 for 20.

The Rockies didn't seem to miss Tulowitzki while turning in their best offensive showing of the year Monday. Their 19 hits were a season high and included three homers.

"That was impressive. It was just what the doctor ordered," manager Walt Weiss said.

Colorado's 35 home runs are tied with the New York Yankees for second in the majors, one back of Atlanta.

Jorge De La Rosa (2-2, 2.86 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound in search of his first win over the Dodgers.

The left-hander is 0-7 with a 6.22 ERA in 13 games against them, including nine starts. He's 0-3 in five starts at Chavez Ravine despite a 2.49 ERA, having been backed by just five total runs.

De La Rosa has been pretty reliable of late. He's gone six innings in four consecutive starts, allowing a combined five earned runs.

The Dodgers turn to rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu (2-1, 3.41), who is facing the Rockies for the first time while trying to build on his longest and best start of the season.

The South Korean left-hander allowed one run and three hits in seven innings while not getting a decision in Thursday's 3-2 road win over the New York Mets.

Ryu is taking the mound at home for the first time since April 7, when he yielded two runs and three hits in 6 1-3 innings of a 6-2 win over Pittsburgh.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds to win the Super Bowl next season, updated after the draft......

6-1-- San Francisco 49ers-- So loaded they took flyer on Lattimore.

15-2-- Denver Broncos-- Added Wes Welker to receiving corps.

8-1-- New England Patriots-- Not much competition in AFC East.

9-1-- Seattle Seahawks-- Lot of competition in the NFC West.

12-1-- Atlanta Falcons-- Added Steven Jackson to help run the ball.

12-1-- Green Bay Packers-- Just paid their QB a whole lot of money.

*****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) This is a free country; a lot of brave people risk their lives to protect our freedoms. Jason Collins is entitled to do what he wants, when he wants. He shouldn't have to call press conferences to explain himself.

12) Pacers-Hawks have played eight times this year; home team won every game. Hasn't even been a close game in this playoff series.

11) More bad news for Seattle, as the NBA recommended the Kings stay in Sacramento. No clue about whether Sacramento deserves to keep its team, but Seattle got screwed badly when the league took the Sonics away because the city wouldn't build yet another new arena- they had a perfectly suitable 15-year old building, but the NBA tried to extort a new arena out of the city, and when the city declined, the NBA moved the Sonics to Oklahoma.

Seattle supported the Sonics and deserves a term, but it doesn't look good.

10) If you saw ESPN’s 30 for 30 on the ’83 NFL Draft, one of the main story tellers was agent Marvin Demoff, who represented both Dan Marino and John Elway (how about those commissions??) Demoff’s son Kevin is now the COO of the St Louis Rams.

9) Speaking of the Rams, second first round draft pick Alec Ogletree. a LB from Georgia, blocked six punts for the Dawgs, so he should help the St Louis special teams.

8) Mets have played five home series, all three game series; over is 9-1 in Games 1-2, 0-5 in Game 3’s.

7) In their franchise history, Nuggets have been down 3-1 in a series twelve times; they’re 5-7 in those Game 5’s, but have never rallied to win a series. They get another chance this week.

6) Raiders took Houston DB DJ Hayden despite fact the kid hasn’t been on the field since suffering a bizarre injury in practice last fall that almost killed him. Hayden collided with a teammate, broke a blood vessel near his heart; he lost 25 pounds, had all the blood replaced in his body more than once, and damn near died.

You wonder how he’ll react the next time he gets on the field; Raiders must be pretty sure about Hayden, to use the 12th pick in the draft on him. .

5) Odd blowup Sunday between David Price and umpire Tom Hallion; Rays say that Hallion cursed at Price, who vehemently denies it. Things got pretty heated; Tampa pitcher Jeremy Hellickson was thrown out of the game, and he wasn’t even in the game.

There has to be a field mike somewhere that picked up what Hallion said to Price. If MLB fines the umpire, they probably won't tell us.

4) Since 1994, only one time have both #1 seeds in the NHL gotten to the Stanley Cup finals; that was 2001, when Colorado-New Jersey played each other. With a short season this year, would expect more chaos in this year's playoffs.

3) Mets-Marlins played until after midnight in Miami Monday, with the Marlins winning 4-3 in 15 innings, scoring twice in the 15th after Tejada put New York ahead with an RBI infield hit in the top of the inning.

2) Second day in a row, A's rallied back from a 5-run deficit, but as I type this, game is 8-8 in 19th inning at 4:20am Tuesday. Longest game in Oakland A's history, but I'm turning off the computer and watching end of the game in the dark. Hopefully it'll end before I go to work.

1) The whole Tim Tebow episode brings up many questions:
a) How on God’s green earth was he ever a 1st round draft pick?
b) How did Josh McDaniels get two more NFL jobs after his dismal performances in Denver and then St Louis? McDaniels was the only person in America who would’ve picked Tebow in the first round.
c) Why the hell did the Jets trade for Tebow last year?
d) How is Matt Simms still on the Jets’ roster? He couldn’t beat out Tyler Bray at Tennessee, and Bray didn’t get drafted this weekend.

MLB

Tuesday, April 30

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Four Tuesday starters combine for 17-2 under record
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a look at four MLB starters taking the hill on Tuesday who combined have a 17-2 under record and have made $1,352.31 for $100 bettors in their 19 starts:

Jose Quintana, Chicago White Sox (2-0, 2.78 ERA, 1-3 O/U)

Since getting torched for five earned runs in four innings in his first start, Quintana has given up only two earned runs in his next three starts. He hasn't allowed a home run to 94 consecutive batters.

Kevin Slowey, Miami Marlins (0-2, 2.43 ERA, 0-5 O/U)

Slowey's under record is strengthened by his offense giving him six runs of support in his five starts, but the under will usually stay strong when you yield only eight earned runs in those outings. Slowey has displayed pinpoint control, walking only six batters this campaign.

Trevor Cahill, Arizona Diamondbacks (1-3, 3.00 ERA, 0-5 O/U)

The lowest total Cahill has seen this season is 8.5, but he has gone well under that in his four other starts. Cahill gave up no earned runs in two outings and 10 earned runs in his other three starts combined.

Jorge De La Rosa, Colorado Rockies (2-2, 2.86 ERA, 1-4 O/U)

De La Rosa's last four starts have been eerily similar. He pitched six innings, giving up a combined five earned runs, and has given up an average of 4.3 hits per outing, with each game going under. The Rockies' offense has scored only 10 runs in his last four starts.
