Game: Monday late night TOTAL

“1 UNIT” LATE NIGHT NFL TOTAL (Cardinals at 49ers OVER 45’ in a 10:15 eastern kickoff on ESPN):

I am taking a bit of a risk on tonight’s OVER since San Francisco spent a ton of offeseason money upgrading a woeful secondary bringing in Nate Clements and Micheal Lewis, but the 49ers throughout the preseason had problems establishing an effective pass rush up front. There is also a risk attached with this total since new Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt learned his craft with the rough andtumble Steelers and he is going to try and rebuild what has always been a suspect defense in the desert. On the other side of the football Whisenhunt is going to attempt to run the football more with Edgerrin James who struggled for yards last year when for the first time he had to run behind a suspect offensive line. Certainly the Cardinals have plenty of depth at running back as J.J. Arrington and Marcel Shipp could be on the field in some situations at the same time. But Whisenhunt is wise enough to know that he is inheriting some of the NFL’s elite wide receivers in Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin who combined for more than 2,100 recieving yards a year ago along with 10 touchdown receptions. Of course the national focus of this game will be on quarterbacks Matt Leinhart and Alex Smith who just happen to have attended the same football camps when growing up 80 miles apart in Southern California. Both got the honor of handing the ball off to Reggie Bush and both developed into high draft picks. Both of these off-the-field friends are going to try and coax a good start out of 2 teams with high hopes for this year, but with multiple losing seasons behind them. Most of you should know plenty about Matt Leinhart who in just 11 starts through for more than 2,500 yards in his rookie season. Alex Smith threw for nearlyt 2,900 yards and made huge leadership strides with a pair of critical 49er wins on the ROAD in December. There are two offensive players that I am going to be keeping a close eye on and one of them is the aforementioned Edggerin James who literally fell off the national radar in his first year NOT running behind the rock-solid Indianapolis offensive line. I have found out that Arizona is going to employ a TWO TIGHT END setup when James runs the football so his personal statistics should radically improve. As for San Francisco keep an eye on TE Vernon Davis who missed most of last year with injury, but has the tools to be a dynamic player. Certainly 49ers running back Frank Gore (1,695 yards last year) has fresh legs after missing the entire preseason with a broken bone in one of his hands. He will run against an Arizona defense that that is making a transistion to a “3-4” alignment which they still have to fully learn. My database research indicates that long term the Cardinals are 17-8 OVER/ROAD against DIVISIONAL opponents. Arizona in the past two years is 9-2 OVER when cast as an underdog. In the past three years San Francisco is 11-3 OVER in the first half of the season, so certainly the odds are on our side for a high scoring late night thriller.

Guaranteed pick

The Cardinals have played over the total in their last 6 games. The over is a profitable 4-0 in Arizona's last 4 games played on grass as well as their last 4 vs. NFC opponents. The over is also 4-1 in their last 5 games played in Week 1. In their last 37 road games the over is a money making 28-9. The Cardinals are explosive on offense but poor on D which will make their games exciting to watch. The over is 7-0 in San Francisco's last 7 games as a favorite. The 49ers have played the over in 8 of their last 10 games played on grass. The teams have played over the total in 6 of the last 7 meetings. The over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between the clubs in San Francisco. Play the over tonight.

Perfect opportunity for the 49ers to gain some much-needed confidence against a lesser opponent, and pick up a game within the division in the process. I really like what HC Mike Nolan and his staff has done over in the Bay the last two seasons, and this franchise really started to form an identity in the last month of their 2006 campaign. Big December wins at both Seattle and Denver leads me to believe San Francisco is on its way back to being respectable in this league.

As for Arizona, the talent has been there the last couple years, but glaring holes on both sides of the ball and an incompetent coaching staff has this franchise in search of its first winning campaign since 1998. The Bidwell’s decided to clean house this past off-season and made a solid hire in Ken Whisenhunt who called the smash mouth offensive attacks in Pittsburgh in his last stop. Along with him, he brought in O-Line coach Russ Grimm who should have a profound effect on the play of this unit. That being said, the Cardinals will go through growing pains most teams go through while implementing new philosophies on both sides of the ball. HC Whisenhunt prefers a run oriented system, and it’s going to take time for Arizona to get used to it. As for the defense, it’s getting a facelift as well and their first six opponents can all tally the 26 PPG they allowed a season ago if not more. I definitely see an upside for Arizona further along down the road, but they’re cannon fodder right now and the Niners are going to have a very big night on both sides of the ball.

San Francisco has been an excellent proposition under the bright lights on Monday night as they’re a solid 14-3 ATS their L/17 tries. Two of the Cardinals five wins were against San Francisco last year, and that just can’t sit well with this club. 2007 is their coming out party, and they have to beat this type of caliber team into a bloody pulp if they’re to be taken for real. Look for them to do just that as they cover this spread with ease en route to their first victory of the season.

4* BEST BET
How can the Bengals be favored in this contest? Cincy is a pitiful
1-7 ATS playing at home in Game One, owns a 2-6 ATS mark on
Mondays and highly-touted QB Carson Palmer can’t even claim
a winning ATS record when playing at Paul Brown Stadium (8-
14-1). Taking the underdog Ravens gets even easier when we
see that dogs in the fi rst Monday Night game of the season have
barked to the tune of 20-8 ATS. The NFL’s best defense taking

Game: Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals Sep 10 2007 7:00PM
Prediction: Cincinnati Bengals
Reason: Big divisional game betwen two top tier teams, each with playoff aspirations. The Bengals have owned this series recently, going 4-1 SU/ATS the last five meetings. The Bengals won eight games last season. All eight victories came by a minimum of a field goal and seven of those victories came by six points or greater. The Bengals are also a perfect 6-0 SU/ATS their last six games played in the month of September, winning all six of those games by greater than a touchdown. Consider laying the short number.

San Francisco* over Arizona by 7

First-season coaching staff of the Cardinals attempts to
win the road opener against a third-year bunch in San
Francisco. But the 49ers' have a superior offensive line
and being able to run the ball better will enable them to
exploit the Cardinals' so-so pass rush and continue to
exploit the exploitable secondary.

The 49ers were pretty ticked off last season when word
leaked out that Arizona requested to "open their new
stadium" against San Francisco for their best chance to
start with a win. The Niners lost the second meeting, too,
but were an injured mess at that point. Under-the-radar
revenge angle. SAN FRANCISCO, 23-16.
