2-27-18 Hockey thread, picks, info and more

LA just steals one from Vegas, by scoring with 11 seconds left to tie and then win in OT with a PP. Also the rare double shutout in the Philly/Habs game.

Mrazek still perfect for Philadelphia

Petr Mrazek’s 1–0 shootout victory in Montreal was his third win in three games since he was traded to the Flyers by the Red Wings on February 19. Mrazek is the first goaltender to win his first three games for the Flyers since Ilya Bryzgalov did so in October 2011. Mrazek’s shutout was his fourth this season and first for Philadelphia. He’s the first NHL goaltender to register a shutout for two different teams in one season since Devan Dubnyk (Arizona, Minnesota) and Jhonas Enroth (Buffalo, Dallas) in 2014–15.

Hard luck loss for Canadiens rookie

Charlie Lindgren got credit for his second shutout of the season when the Canadiens and Flyers skated to a goalless stalemate after 65 minutes of play on Monday, though Philadelphia beat Lindgren and Montreal in a shootout. Lindgren is the fourth rookie goaltender in Canadiens history to post a shutout in a game in which both teams failed to score a goal. The other rookies to do that with the Canadiens (all in 0–0 ties) were Gery McNeil in 1950–51, Jacques Plante in both 1953–54 and 1954–55, and Tony Esposito in 1968–69.

Three-pointer in first for Jones

Defenseman Seth Jones tallied one goal and two assists, all in the first period, in the Blue Jackets’ 5–1 win against the Capitals. This was only the third time in team history that a Columbus defenseman produced three points in one period. The other Blue Jackets backliners to do that were Deron Quint (March 9, 2001 at Florida, three goals in the second period) and Jaroslav Spacek (March 10, 2003 at Carolina, three assists in the third period). Jones recorded 42 points for Columbus last season and he’s at 40 points this season after his three-point output on Monday. He’s the first defenseman with two seasons of 40 points or more for the Blue Jackets.

Rantanen nets 20 for second straight season

Mikko Rantanen, who scored 20 goals for the Avalanche as a rookie last season, scored his 20th goal this season in Colorado’s 3–1 win against the Canucks on Monday. Rantanen is the fourth player since the Quebec Nordiques moved to Denver in 1995 to score 20 or more goals in his rookie season with the Avs and repeat that feat for Colorado in the following season. The other players to do that are Chris Drury (1998–99 and 1999–2000), Paul Stastny (2006–07 and 2007–08) and Matt Duchene (2009–10 and 2010–11).

An avalanche of shots for MacKinnon

Nathan MacKinnon racked up three points (two goals, one assist) and 19 shot attempts (including nine which were on goal) in Colorado’s 3–1 win against the Canucks. The only other NHL players to attempt at least 19 shots in an NHL game this season are Brent Burns (20 at Colorado on Jan. 18) and Alex Ovechkin (19 vs. Tampa Bay on Feb. 20).

Marner on point since the break

Mitch Marner scored one goal and assisted on another for the Maple Leafs in their shootout loss to the Lightning in Tampa. Marner scored only seven goals in his 51 games this season before the All-Star break but he’s tallied 10 goals in 14 games since then. The only other NHL players with a double-digit goal total since the All-Star Game are Evgeni Malkin (13), Connor McDavid (12) and Eric Staal (10).
