Friday Tips
March 1, 2013
Friday's NBA card is loaded with 12 games to wager on, including a solid pair of nationally televised contests on ESPN. The Heat goes for their 13th consecutive victory as the Grizzlies come to town, while the Thunder and Nuggets lock horns for the third time this season. The night begins in the Nation's Capital with the coldest ATS team trying to pick up a cover in a revenge spot.
Knicks at Wizards - 7:05 PM EST
New York owns an 0-7-1 ATS record the last eight contests, while losing three of its past four games away from Madison Square Garden. The Knicks are fresh off consecutive home victories over the Sixers and Warriors, but the two wins came by a combined 10 points. Mike Woodson's team is both in a revenge situation and look-ahead spot, as the Knicks return home to host the Heat on Sunday afternoon.
This ATS skid began on February 6 with a 106-96 defeat at the Verizon Center as 4 ½-point favorites against the Wizards. Washington torched New York's defense by shooting 53% from the floor and putting up 36 points in the final quarter. Six Wizards scored in double-figures, including Trevor Ariza burning his former squad for 20 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range. The victory snapped a nine-game skid to the Knicks dating back to 2010, while ending a five-game home losing streak in the series.
Since John Wall returned to the lineup on January 12, the Wizards own a sterling 17-6 ATS record, including a 14-3 ATS mark in the underdog role. In fact, Washington has cashed eight straight times when receiving points at the Verizon Center, including outright wins over New York, Oklahoma City, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Houston, and the L.A. Clippers. The Wizards are coming off a one-point home loss to the Pistons, who pulled off a season-sweep of Washington.
Warriors at Celtics - 7:35 PM EST
Boston returns home following a 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS road swing, which was capped off by an overtime triumph at Utah on Monday. The Celtics actually hit the highway after Friday's game with Golden State, as the Warriors search for a win following back-to-back losses to the Pacers and Knicks. Stephen Curry tallied an NBA-high 54 points in Wednesday's 109-105 setback at New York, but the Warriors did cash as 7 ½-point underdogs.
Golden State played that game without power forward David Lee, who was suspended one game by the league for his role in Tuesday's brawl at Indiana. The Warriors have fallen off since a 6-1 road swing in mid-December, as Mark Jackson's club has won just one of the last 10 times in the away underdog role (2-8 ATS). In the last 12 road games overall, the Warriors have been golden to 'over' backers by cashing 10 times, while giving up at least 100 points on 10 occasions.
Since Rajon Rondo's season-ending knee injury on January 25, the Celtics have figured out a way to win consistently at home without their All-Star point guard. Boston has grabbed seven consecutive victories at TD Garden, including wins over the Clippers, Heat, Lakers, Nuggets, and Bulls. The C's are playing with revenge after getting drubbed in Oakland on December 29 in a 101-83 road loss. Boston has beaten Golden State in eight of the last nine home meetings, but the Warriors have cashed in the last three visits to TD Garden (all as underdogs of 9 ½ points or more).
Grizzlies at Heat - 8:05 PM EST
Miami just keeps on rolling after picking up its 12th consecutive victory after knocking off Sacramento in two overtimes on Tuesday, 141-129. The Heat failed to cover as 15-point favorites, the second straight non-cover as double-digit 'chalk.' The Grizzlies invade South Florida on an eight-game winning streak following a historic rally on Wednesday night.
Memphis trailed Dallas by 25 points in the second quarter, but put together an incredible comeback to stun the Mavericks, 90-84. The defense stepped up in the third quarter by limiting Dallas to just five points, while Memphis found a way to win in spite of shooting 37% from the field. Following a six-game 'over' streak, the Grizzlies are back to business by cashing the 'under' in four straight contests, while holding four straight opponents to 84 points or less.
The Heat has revenge on their minds after getting torched at Memphis in mid-November, 104-86. Dwyane Wade shot just 3-of-15 from the floor for eight points, but the two Grizzlies that lit up the Heat defense that night are now gone as Rudy Gay and Wayne Ellington combined for 46 points. Miami's offense has eclipsed the 100-point mark in eight of the last nine home contests, resulting in eight 'overs.'
Thunder at Nuggets - 10:35 PM EST
Miami and Denver are the hottest home teams in the league, as the Nuggets enter tonight's action owning a 24-3 SU and 18-9 ATS record at the Pepsi Center. Denver is in the midst of a nine-game winning streak at home, as this hot stretch began with an overtime triumph over Oklahoma City on January 20. The Nuggets are currently 20-4 to the 'over' the last 24 contests, including a 12-2 mark at home.
The Thunder cruised to a 119-74 rout against the short-handed Hornets on Wednesday to easily cash as 14 ½-point favorites. OKC completed a three-game sweep of its homestand, with each victory coming by at least 16 points. The Thunder has stumbled recently on the highway by losing five of their last seven games, including defeats at Cleveland, Utah, and Houston in which the defense allowed at least 109 points.
The last time the Nuggets and Thunder hooked up at the Pepsi Center, Denver held off OKC in overtime, 121-118 as seven Nuggets scored in double-figures. Oklahoma City benefited from 40 free throws made on 48 attempts, while the dynamic duo of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook combined for 63 points.

Grizzlies at Heat: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Memphis Grizzlies at Miami Heat (-8, 187.5)
The Memphis Grizzlies and the Miami Heat have combined to win 20 straight games. One of the two longest current winning streaks in the NBA will come to an end on Friday when the Heat host the Grizzlies. Miami has taken 12 straight and is beginning to run away with the Eastern Conference as its defense catches up to LeBron James and the offense. Memphis and its league-best scoring defense is victorious in eight straight.
James added to his MVP resume with 40 points and 16 assists in a 141-129 double-overtime win over Sacramento on Tuesday, improving the Heat’s league-best home record to 25-3. Miami has looked far from invincible in its last two games, however, needing a late surge to topple Cleveland on Sunday before the scare against lowly Sacramento. The Grizzlies are allowing 89.5 points on the season and held the Dallas Mavericks to five in the third quarter of Wednesday’s 90-84 triumph. The 84 points marked the most the team has surrendered in its last four contests.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, SPSO (Memphis), SUN (Miami), ESPN
ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (38-18): Memphis went through a transitional period in the wake of the trade that sent Rudy Gay to Toronto at the end of January, but has found itself again as a defensive force. The Grizzlies are surrendering 86.6 points during their winning streak while receiving just enough offense from the likes of Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol and Mike Conley to earn victories. Only one of the last eight triumphs has come by more than seven points. Without Gay around to dominate the ball, Memphis is playing more to its strengths on the interior. Randolph has recorded five straight double-doubles and Gasol has picked up his pace with 18 points and 10.7 rebounds over his last three contests. Gasol was held to two points and 10 boards in the first meeting with Miami but Randolph went for 18 and 12 and the defense held the Heat to 38 percent shooting in a 104-86 home win on Nov. 11.
ABOUT THE HEAT (41-14): James scored 20 points on 10-of-19 shooting in the Nov. 11 meeting but Dwyane Wade was held to eight points on 3-of-15 from the floor. Wade has been much stronger during the Heat’s recent surge and went for 39 points in Tuesday’s win over the Kings. The All-Star guard has complimented James with an average of 24.5 points on over 50 percent shooting during the winning streak. James is averaging 29.8 points on 65 percent shooting, 8.3 assists and 7.6 rebounds over the last 12 games. The reigning MVP has become even more of an Internet sensation due to his **** dunking routine, which he uses to help get his team get pumped up in the final minutes of warmups. Miami had allowed an average of 92.4 points in the first 10 games of its streak before letting up a bit at home over the last two.
TRENDS:
* Over is 6-0 in Heat’s last six home games.
* Heat are 4-1 ATS in their last five vs. Western Conference foes.
* Grizzlies are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games following an ATS loss.
* Over is 8-2 in Heat’s last 10 overall.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. Memphis has won two of its last three trips to Miami, including a 97-82 triumph on Apr. 6 last season.
2. Heat F Shane Battier (hamstring) and G Mike Miller (sinus infection) are both questionable for Friday.
3. Miami has not won 13 in a row since a franchise-best 14-game streak in 2004-05.

NBA betting: Nuggets continue to soar over totals
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No team has taken advantage of the All-Star break more than the Denver Nuggets.
The Nuggets have used the extra rest to fuel their offense and play over the total in four of five (4-1 SU) since the break, picking up right where they left off as an awesome over play for bettors. Oddsmakers continue to set the bar higher and higher for this team as the season progresses, but the Nugs seem to continually rise to the occasion.
Denver boasts a 37-22 O/U mark heading into action Friday against Oklahoma City and is 20-4 O/U in its last 24 contests. The Nuggets are averaging 105.5 points per game (3rd) and allowing 101.8 points (26th) – the perfect storm for an over play.
Denver has pumped up its offensive output even more over its last five games, putting up an average of 110.6 points. Oddsmakers have failed in their attempts to counter the scoring frenzy, despite setting an average total of 209.5 for those contests.
Danilo Gallinari, who has missed the last two games with a thigh injury, leads a well-balanced Nuggets attack that features six players that average double digits in scoring on a nightly basis.
Denver has also been pounding the glass, hauling in an average of 45 rebounds per night (2nd) and a league-best 13.5 offensive boards. The second-chance opportunities are a major reason why the Nuggets continue to soar over 100 points with ease.
Denver plays four of its next five games at Pepsi Center against over-friendly opposition. Those opponents (Thunder, Hawks, Kings, Clippers, T-Wolves) have a combined 151-129-5 O/U mark.
Oddsmakers have sent out a suggested total of 220 for Friday's contest, which would be the highest number both teams have seen this season.

NBA Top 4: Best double-digit underdog bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NBA bettors are going to see pointspreads get bigger and bigger as the playoffs draw near. Teams in the postseason hunt will clash with clubs with no playoff prayer in the next two months, leaving oddsmakers no choice but to pile on the chalk.
The struggling Minnesota Timberwolves are a perfect example of that, getting 10.5 points from books for Thursday's road game versus the postseason-pushing Los Angeles Lakers.
Double-digit underdogs have only shown up 99 times this season heading into Thursday, going 47-50-2 against the spread (10-89 SU). But there are some teams who have made the most of those points, coming up big for backers when tagged as double-digit dogs.
Washington Wizards (3-8 SU, 8-3 ATS as double-digit underdogs)
The Wizards are the biggest betting surprise of the season, posting a 34-20-2 ATS record. Washington has thrived as a double-digit dog, going 8-3 ATS. Most of those came on the road, where the Wiz are a stellar 17-9-1 ATS.
Orlando Magic (2-6 SU, 7-1 ATS as double-digit underdogs)
One of the reasons why Washington is third in the Southeast Division is the poor play of Orlando this year. The Magic have only four wins in their last 33 games but have covered as double-digit dogs in five of their six contests when getting 10 or more points.
Cleveland Cavaliers (2-6 SU, 7-1 ATS as double-digit underdogs)
Cleveland recently covered as 12.5-point pups at Miami, giving the champion Heat a scare in a 109-105 loss on Feb. 24. The Cavaliers have been the hot bet – no matter what the spread – in recent weeks (6-0 ATS in their last six), and will likely see double-digit spreads in upcoming games with the Clippers, Grizzlies, and Spurs.
Dallas Mavericks (0-5 SU, 4-1 ATS as double-digit underdogs)
At first glance, we thought these numbers were off. But, the Mavs have been big pups in five games this season – at Clippers, at Miami, at OKC, at San Antonio, at Memphis – and while they lost all five of those outings, they managed to cover in all but one. Don’t hold your breath waiting for the next opportunity to back Dirk & Co. as a Triple-D but they could get 10 or more points in San Antonio on March 14.

Nets at Bulls: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brooklyn Nets at Chicago Bulls (-5, 177.5)
The Chicago Bulls could be severely shorthanded when they host the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday. Starters Richard Hamilton and Luol Deng are expected to be game-time decisions for Chicago, which capped off a dismal month of February with a 93-82 home victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday behind a monster performance from center Joakim Noah. It was only the fifth win in 13 games for the Bulls, who trail the Central Division-leading Indiana Pacers by 3 1/2 games.
Brooklyn dropped a 98-90 home decision to the Dallas Mavericks on Friday. It was the third loss in four games for the Nets, who hold a half-game edge on the Bulls for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Brooklyn's chances of winning the Atlantic Division title have taken a major hit following a stretch in which it has dropped six of nine home games. The Nets trail division leader New York by three games and are five back of the Knicks in the loss column.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), WGN (Chicago)
ABOUT THE NETS (34-25): Guard Joe Johnson had turned in two of his best performances of the season before injuring his foot in a win at Milwaukee on Feb. 20. Johnson sat out three games before returning to the lineup Friday and, not surprisingly, struggled by scoring 11 points and committing four turnovers. Deron Williams had his third consecutive game with at least 24 points but also was plagued by the turnover bug, matching his season high with seven as Brooklyn committed 20 to negate a 44-31 rebounding edge.
ABOUT THE BULLS (33-25): Noah's dominant performance in Thursday's game was still the talk of Chicago a day later. He recorded the third triple-double of his career with some staggering numbers: 23 points, 21 rebounds and a career-high 11 blocked shots. Teammate Carlos Boozer referred to the totals as "legendary stuff" while coach Tom Thibodeau raved about both the performance and its impact. "When you get an effort like that that, it ignites and inspires your team," Thibodeau said. "It makes other guys do the same."
TRENDS:
* Nets are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games.
* Under is 4-1 in Nets’ last five overall.
* Road team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Bulls are 1-6 ATS in their last seven Saturday games.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. The teams have split two meetings this season that were decided by a total of five points.
2. Brooklyn handed Chicago one of its seven home losses last season.
3. Hamilton missed Thursday's game with back spasms while Deng had some teeth loosened when he was elbowed in the head.

Sunday Tips
March 3, 2013
The Sunday NBA card is filled with action starting with the Knicks and Heat early in the afternoon followed by the Thunder and Clippers in Los Angeles. We'll take a look at three of they key night matchups, including the Lakers and Hawks at Staples Center, while the Bulls and Pacers hook up in a key Central Division battle. A game that involves two Texas rivals begins this preview as both clubs are in reverse roles this season.
Mavericks at Rockets - 7:05 PM EST
Dallas has plenty of ground to make up in the Western Conference playoff race as the Mavs begin Sunday's action five games behind the Rockets for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Mavs have taken care of business against their cross-state foes twice this season, including a 116-109 victory at the Toyota Center in December as six-point underdogs.
Rick Carlisle's club bounced back from Wednesday's meltdown at Memphis to top Brooklyn on Friday, 98-90 to snap a three-game skid. Dallas is on fire covering numbers on the highway by posting a 12-2 ATS record the last 14 road contests. The Mavs have limited three straight opponents to 95 points or less, while cashing the 'under' in four consecutive games.
The Rockets escaped Orlando on Friday night with a 118-110 triumph, but failed to cash as nine-point road favorites. Houston's five-game home winning streak came to a screeching halt in Wednesday's buzzer-beating loss to Milwaukee, but the Rockets have won six of their last nine home games against Western Conference opponents. The Rockets look to end a nine-game losing skid to the Mavericks that dates back to November 2010, while Dallas has cashed in seven straight meetings.
Bulls at Pacers - 8:05 PM EST
These two teams will battle it out for the Central Division title when all is said and done, as Indiana holds a three-game advantage over Chicago. The Bulls head to Indiana with no rest following Saturday's home victory over Brooklyn, while winning consecutive games for the first time since late January. However, Chicago is playing with double-revenge after getting tripped up twice by Indiana.
The Pacers held off the Bulls at the United Center in early December as four-point underdogs, 80-76. Each team shot below 38% from the floor, while Paul George torched the Chicago defense with 34 points. Indiana topped Chicago again at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on February 4 in a make-up game after getting postponed in December due to bad weather in the area. Frank Vogel's club outlasted the Bulls in a run-and-gun contest as the Pacers topped the Bulls as 5 ½-point 'chalk,' 111-101.
Indiana has won six of its past seven games following Friday's road victory at Toronto, while picking up its sixth cover in this stretch. The Bulls have been up and down on the highway recently by splitting its last 10 games away from the Windy City, while cashing the 'under' in four of their last five road contests. After going through a nice stretch as a road underdog, the Bulls own a below average 2-4 ATS record the past six opportunities when receiving points away from home.
Hawks at Lakers - 9:35 PM EST
Los Angeles is that close to reaching the .500 mark, as the Lakers would improve to 30-30 on the season with a victory over the Hawks. It's been an uphill climb for the Purple and Gold, who has won 12 of the last 17 games, including seven of the previous eight contests at Staples Center. The Lakers will face an Atlanta squad that saw its four-game winning streak halted in a surprising setback at Phoenix on Friday night as short favorites.
The Hawks play the fifth of a six-game road trip after winning three of the first four contests. Atlanta pulled off outright 'dog victories at Milwaukee and Utah, while routing Detroit as short favorites. However, the Hawks pulled up lame in a 92-87 defeat to the Suns, the lowest point total for Atlanta since scoring 76 points against Chicago on February 2. In spite of the loss, Larry Drew's team owns a 5-1 SU/ATS record the last six road games.
The Lakers drilled the short-handed Timberwolves, 116-94 on Thursday as 10-point favorites, while topping the 100-point mark for the sixth straight game. L.A. has hit the 'over' in four of five contests since the All-Star break, including all three games at home. Mike D'Antoni's club has put together a 7-4 SU record at home against Eastern Conference opponents, but the Lakers have covered just five times.

Heat at Knicks: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Miami Heat at New York Knicks (+4.5, 198)
When the Miami Heat last tasted defeat, they were clinging to a half-game lead over the New York Knicks for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Things have taken a dramatic turn since. The Heat will enter Sunday's matinee showdown at Madison Square Garden riding a 13-game winning streak and holding a comfortable 6 1/2-game edge over the Knicks. Miami still has some unfinished business with New York, which has won both meetings between the teams this season - each by a 20-point margin.
The Heat overcame a sub-par outing by LeBron James to keep the win streak intact with a gritty 98-91 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. Miami has won five in a row away from home, all coming by double digits. The Knicks used a strong fourth quarter to knock off the Washington Wizards on Friday night. It was the third consecutive victory following a four-game skid for New York, which is tied with the Indiana Pacers for the second seed in the East.
TV: 1 p.m. ET, ABC
ABOUT THE HEAT (42-14): While James earned his fourth consecutive Eastern Conference Player of the Month Friday, teammate Dwyane Wade is quietly putting together his own stellar stretch. Wade scored a team-high 22 points against the Grizzlies and is averaging 29.5 points in his last four games. Wade is shooting a blistering 63.1 percent and has added eight steals and five blocked shots during that span. He is averaging 27.3 points in his career vs. the Knicks despite scoring a combined 28 points in the two meetings this season.
ABOUT THE KNICKS (35-20): New York routed the Heat in Miami on Dec. 6 without leading scorer Carmelo Anthony, who is on a scoring spree of his own. Anthony put up 30 points against the Wizards and is averaging 31.5 points in the last four games. But he continues to struggle from 3-point range, connecting on just 20 percent of his attempts (8 of 40) over the past six games.
TRENDS:
* Heat are 5-0 ATS in their last five road games.
* Knicks are 1-7-1 ATS in their last nine games overall.
* Over is 4-0 in Heat’s last four overall.
* Over is 4-1 in Knicks’ last five overall.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. A victory Sunday will allow Miami to match the longest winning streak in franchise history, set during the 2004-05 season.
2. The Knicks have buried 37 3-pointers in the two wins over the Heat.
3. Miami ousted New York in five games in last season's playoffs, not allowing more than 94 points.
