Ah, the memories. I still get chills when I see the replays of
that post-season. Can't remember what I ate for breakfast
today, but I remember the Mets being down 3-0 to Bob
Kepper in the last inning I think before tying it up. Then
Jesse Orosco finishing it off against Bill Doran. Was it Billy
Hatcher that hit a HR in extra innings to tie it up again at 6?
Then of course the season ending with the most famous
ground ball in the history of baseball. I can't think about the
play whenever I hear Vin Scully's voice even now. Even
though Mookie Wilson still swears, and I believe him, that
he would have beat out the play anyway.
Anyway, here's my funny story from that magical season.....
(It may be a little long)
As a tradition, my father always took my Little League
Manager and his son to a ballgame at the end of the season
as a thank you. We had tickets to the Mets vs the Cubs that
year on Sept. 17th. A meaningless game because the Mets
had such a huge lead at that point unless they were swept
in Philadelphia. Well, they were swept by the Phillies and
now I was going to Shea with a chance to see the Mets
clinch the division with Dwight Gooden on the mound.
Great seats, just behind 3rd base about 10 rows back.
Two young rookies, one a Met, one a Cub were signing
autographs right in front of me, but I was too stubborn to
go down and get one because I was only 11 years old and
they weren't even Stars!
The Met, making his first start ever had 3 hits that night
before being replaced for late inning defense. The Cub
rookie hit a HR that night. His 3rd of the season.
Trivia question......Who were the 2 players?
Hint: The Met was replaced by Keith Hernandez and the
Cub has gone to hit over 500 HR since. Why didn't I get
that autograph. (Sorry, I have no prizes to give.)
Anyway, I remember the whole stadium rushing the field
when the last ground ball was hit to Wally Backman at
2nd base. I had grass from left field in a bag in my room
for years afterward.
