Five injuries NHL bettors should pay attention to
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now that we’re about 25 percent of the way through the NHL season, we’re starting to get to that point in the year where injuries are playing a key role in handicapping puck bets.
Here’s a look at a few injuries bettors should be aware of and why. (Statistics are as of before Friday, Feb. 15 games).
Miikka Kiprusoff, Calgary Flames goaltender – Knee sprain, hopeful return late February
The injury to the Flames’ workhorse netminder, who has played at least 70 games every year since the 2005-06 season, is huge. It thrusts 24-year-old Leland Irving into the starting role, who had just seven games of NHL experience coming into the season. He has an .895 save percentage with a 2.93 goals against average in five games. The Flames may need to start scoring to win, like they did Wednesday night (7-4 over Dallas).
Johan Franzen, Red Wings right wing – hip flexor, day-to-day but out Friday vs. Anaheim
They don’t call this guy "The Mule" for nothing and his recent injury is especially tough on Detroit, which is now down three right wingers (Todd Bertuzzi, Mikael Samuelsson). He doesn’t always end up on the scoreboard, but Franzen is a huge presence on Detroit’s power play and in the corners. It's no shock the Red Wings had a three-game winning streak snapped without him against St. Louis Wednesday.
Brooks Laich, Washington Capitals center – groin, hopes to return late February
Laich hasn’t played yet this season, but his absence is one quiet reason why the Caps are in the basement in the Southeast. He’s a physical, consistent two-way center who can also score 20 goals and it’s often his line’s shifts that change momentum when Washington plays flat – which it tends to do. With Alex Semin gone to Carolina, Laich's return won’t be too soon.
Jaroslav Halak, St. Louis Blues goaltender – groin, out indefinitely
The Blues are the kind of team that likes to win 2-1. Since Halak got hurt six games ago, they’ve given up at least three goals in every contest and a total of 28 (4.67 goals per game). They gone 7-0-2 over/under in their last nine games overall.
Erik Karlsson, Ottawa Senators defenseman – Achilles, out for season
Obviously, it’s huge when you lose the reigning Norris Trophy winner, who had 10 points in 13 games for Ottawa. But this could be one of those injuries that oddsmakers and bettors tend to overvalue. A hot goalie can compensate for a lot and Craig Anderson could be the best in the league right now. The Sens are an under team this year with a 4-10 over/under record. When some of their injured forwards start returning, there could be some value here.

Sharks at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
San Jose Sharks at Chicago Blackhawks (-145, 5.5)
Still in search of their first win this month, the San Jose Sharks will attempt to do something on Friday no team has been able to achieve thus far this season - defeat the Chicago Blackhawks in regulation. San Jose ran the table in January, beginning the abbreviated campaign with seven straight victories. The club's fortunes have changed completely in February as the Sharks have gone 0-3-3, scoring more than two goals only once during the winless streak while being shut out twice.
San Jose, which is 0-1-1 on its six-game road trip, would like nothing better than to be the first team to prevent Chicago from earning at least one point. The Blackhawks started the season with a six-game winning streak before falling in a shootout to the Wild in Minnesota on Jan. 30. They have gone 4-0-2 since, including a 3-2 shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday in the opener of their seven-game homestand. Chicago is four away from setting the NHL record for most games without a regulation loss to start a season - a mark currently owned by the 2006-07 Ducks, who opened the campaign 12-0-4.
TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, NHL Network, CSN California (San Jose), CSN (Chicago)
ABOUT THE SHARKS (7-3-3): Matt Pelech's first stint with San Jose lasted just one game as the right wing was assigned to Worcester of the American Hockey League on Wednesday. Pelech, who appeared in five contests with the Calgary Flames during his only previous season in the NHL in 2008-09, had 11:23 of ice time while engaging in a fight against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday but was a healthy scratch for the 1-0 overtime loss to the Nashville Predators the following night. The Sharks are hoping to avenge a 5-3 home loss on Feb. 5 in which it squandered a pair of two-goal leads in the first period.
ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (10-0-3): Nearly everything is clicking for Chicago thus far this season. The one part of its game that needs work, however, is the power play. The Blackhawks rank 16th in the league at 18.2 percent after a 1-for-6 performance on Tuesday. They spent all but 1:20 of overtime with the man advantage but were unable to produce the winning goal. Patrick Kane had his five-game goal-scoring streak snapped against Anaheim but extended his point streak to seven contests with an assist. Kane, who is tied for second in the league in scoring with 20 points, has gotten his name on the scoresheet in all but one of Chicago's 13 games.
TRENDS:
* Home team is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Under is 6-0 in Blackhawks’ last six home games.
* Under is 8-2 in Sharks’ last 10 overall.
* Blackhawks are 5-1 in their last six vs. Pacific foes.
OVERTIME:
1. San Jose returns to Chicago next Friday for the fifth game of its road trip.
2. The Blackhawks had played only twice at the United Center before hosting Anaheim on Tuesday.
3. The Sharks are 2-for-34 on the power play over their last eight contests.

Around the rink: Saturday's NHL betting news and notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tampa Bay Lightning at Florida Panthers (+106, 5.5)
Probable goaltenders: Anders Lindback (TB), Jose Theodore (FLA)
The Lightning have let a tremendous 6-1 start fritter away with a six-game winless streak, including a 4-3 home loss to the Washington Capitals on Thursday. Tampa Bay, which still leads the league in scoring, has only one victory in five road games and has given up 12 goals its last three contests. Florida has lost just once in regulation (3-1-3) since falling at Tampa Bay 5-2 on Jan. 29. The Lightning are 5-0 in the last five meetings.
Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs (-134, 5.5)
Probable goaltenders: Craig Anderson (OTT), Ben Scrivens (TOR)
Jason Spezza (back), Erik Karlsson (Achilles) and Milan Michalek (knee) are all key cogs out for the Senators, who have dropped five of their last seven games (2-4-1). The Maple Leafs saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 setback to Carolina on Thursday. Home has not been a comforting place for Toronto, which is just 2-4-0 at the Air Canada Centre in 2013. The Maple Leafs haven't fared well versus Ottawa at home either, losing four of five (1-3-1). The road team is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
Philadelphia Flyers at Montreal Canadiens (-140, 5.5)
Probable goaltenders: TBD (PHI), Carey Price (MTL)
Philadelphia squandered a two-goal lead in Friday's 5-3 loss at New Jersey, while Montreal is coming off a successful trip to the Sunshine State, where it posted a shootout win over Tampa Bay and an overtime victory over Florida. The Canadiens have gone beyond regulation in three of their last four games after having eight of their first nine contests settled in 60 minutes. The Flyers have dominated the all-time series of late, winning three straight meetings and six of the last seven.
New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders (+102, 5)
Probable goaltenders: Johan Hedberg (NJ), Evgeni Nabokov (NYI)
The New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders certainly are getting to know each other during the early portion of the abbreviated NHL season. The Atlantic Division rivals will meet for the fourth time in 2013 on Saturday. New Jersey, which has won both road contests in the set, has more victories on Long Island than coach Jack Capuano's club this season. The Devils continued their torrid February by posting their sixth win in seven outings on Friday, a 5-3 triumph over Philadelphia. The Islanders also were victorious in their last outing, rallying from a two-goal deficit to snap a five-game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout win over the rival New York Rangers on Thursday. The Devils are 6-1 in the last seven meetings in New York.
Anaheim Ducks at Nashville Predators (-144, 5)
Probable goaltenders: Viktor Fasth (ANA), Pekka Rinne (NSH)
Predators’ netminder Pekka Rinne has recorded back-to-back shutouts for the second time in his career and has three in his last four contests. Rinne hasn't allowed a goal in 137 minutes, 41 seconds. Anaheim posted a 3-2 shootout win over Nashville when the teams met at the Honda Center on Jan. 26. Viktor Fasth, who boasts a perfect 7-0 record after last night’s 5-2 victory over Detroit, made 19 saves - and stopped all three shooters during the bonus format - to secure his first victory. The under is 10-1-2 in the Predators’ last 13 home games.
Columbus Blue Jackets at Phoenix Coyotes (-183, 5)
Probable goaltenders: TBD (CBJ), Mike Smith (PHX)
Columbus managed only 13 shots in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Kings in Los Angeles and avoided being shut out with just 2:25 remaining in the third period. The Blue Jackets were seeking their first winning streak of the season but instead lost for the fourth time in five contests (1-3-1). Phoenix is hoping to find its offense as it returns home from a 2-1-0 road trip. The Coyotes scored a total of three goals on the trek. Columbus has lost five of its last six visits to Phoenix and the home team has taken six of the last seven meetings between the teams.
Colorado Avalanche at Edmonton Oilers (-139, 5)
Probable goaltenders: Semyon Varlamov (COL), Devan Dubnyk (EDM)
The Oilers have scored three goals or less in all but one of its 13 contests this season. But their best offensive output came against the Avalanche on Jan. 28, when they posted a 4-1 home victory. Colorado halted a three-game winless streak Thursday, when it posted a 4-3 shootout triumph over the Wild in Minnesota. Much like Edmonton, the Avalanche have had difficulty putting the puck in the net. The club has scored three goals or less in each of its last five games and 10 of its 12 contests this season. The home team has won six of the last seven meetings in the all-time series.

Kings at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks (-128, 5)
The Chicago Blackhawks opened their season with a 5-2 victory at Los Angeles. On Sunday, the Blackhawks host the Kings sporting the best record in the NHL. Chicago is the only team without a regulation loss this season, and not even an upper-body injury to starting goaltender Corey Crawford could cool its hot start. Ray Emery made 27 saves in a 4-1 win over San Jose on Friday. Emery is 4-0-0 this season and will likely start until Crawford is ready to return.
Los Angeles has won two straight since benching starting goaltender Jonathan Quick, who has not played close to his Vezina-nominated form from last season with a .891 save percentage in 10 starts. Jonathan Bernier has held opponents to one goal in each of his two starts this week as the Kings won back-to-back games in regulation for the first time this season. Los Angeles was 1-for-5 on the power play in both wins and is 3-1-1 when scoring with the man advantage.
TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, NBC, TSN 2
