Sunday's Pac-12 Action
February 9, 2013
The Pac-12 takes center-stage in a rare Sunday night tripleheader. Nine of the league's 12 teams own a .500 record or better inside the conference, as Arizona is holding onto a slim lead at 8-2. The big question heading down the stretch is if Oregon, Arizona State, or UCLA can catch Arizona for the top seed in the Pac 12 tournament. Several of the middle-tier clubs have an opportunity at a road victory on Sunday, including Cal, who makes a trip to Tucson.
Cal at Arizona - 7:00 PM EST
The Wildcats are riding a four-game winning streak since getting blown out by UCLA on January 24, as Arizona goes for just its fourth cover in 11 conference games. Sean Miller's team failed to cash in Wednesday's 73-66 victory over Stanford as 10 ½-point favorites, dropping the 'Cats to 1-6 ATS in the last seven games as double-digit 'chalk.' Arizona overcame a one-point deficit to outscore Stanford, 47-39 in the second half, while Mark Lyons and Solomon Hill combined for 48 points.
The Golden Bears fell short in a 66-62 defeat at Arizona State on Thursday, while failing to cash as 3 ½-point 'dogs. Mike Montgomery's squad has now hit the 'under' in seven of the last eight contests, as Cal is searching for some consistency on offense. In five of the previous nine games, Cal has scored 62 points or less, but the Bears have eclipsed the 71-point mark three times. The road has been tough for Cal inside the Pac-12, going 2-4 SU/ATS with the only wins coming at Utah and USC.
Arizona has taken four of the last five meetings in the series, but the two teams are meeting for the only time in the regular season. The Bears are making their first trip to Tucson since January 2011 when Cal covered as 13-point underdogs in a 73-71 setback.
Colorado at Oregon State - 9:00 PM EST
The Buffaloes picked up one of their uglier wins of the season in a 48-47 close-shave at Oregon as seven-point 'dogs on Thursday. Each team shot just 36% from the floor, while Colorado had only one player score in double-figures (Andre Roberson - 10), but the Buffs managed their fourth victory in five games. CU improved to 3-1 ATS as an underdog in Pac-12 action, but Tad Boyle's team has lost outright in two road favorite opportunities at Arizona State and Utah.
The Beavers are the hottest ATS team in the conference by covering seven of the last eight games, including five straight in the underdog role. Craig Robinson's squad snapped a three-game skid with Thursday's home rout of Utah, 82-64 as 8 ½-point 'chalk,' while limiting the Utes to 35% shooting from the field. The win was just the second in 10 conference contests, as Oregon State owns a dreadful 1-6 ATS record in lined games off a victory this season.
The home team won each of the two meetings in Colorado's debut season inside the Pac-12, as the Beavers blew out the Buffaloes in Corvallis, 83-69.
Washington at USC - 10:00 PM EST
Both the Huskies and Trojans each own 5-5 records inside the Pac-12, while each club is going in different directions. Washington started conference play at 4-0, but Lorenzo Romar's team is headed backwards with losses in five of the last six games. The Huskies fell at the buzzer in Thursday's two-point setback at UCLA, even though UW covered as seven-point underdogs. In spite of Washington's struggles, the Huskies improved to 8-2 ATS against Pac-12 opponents, including 6-1 ATS mark as an underdog.
The Trojans have split six games since the firing of head coach Kevin O'Neill in mid-January, which includes consecutive wins over UCLA and Washington State. USC pushed as four-point favorites in Thursday's 72-68 victory over Wazoo, the third win in five conference games at the Galen Center. This is the third instance in which the Trojans have are seeking a three-game winning streak, but USC has failed in the first two chances with losses to Illinois and Cal as short favorites.
Washington captured both matchups with USC last season, including a 22-point blowout as 7 ½-point favorites in Los Angeles. The Trojans last beat the Huskies at home in January 2010, while losing three of the last four meetings in Southern California.

Sunday's Slate
February 9, 2013
With football season now in the rearview mirror, it’s great to see college hoops stepping up with a great card for Sunday. We have a number of outstanding matchups so let’s take a look at two crucial Big Ten showdowns to get started.
**Indiana at Ohio State**
--Most offshore books opened Ohio State (17-5 straight up, 12-8 against the spread) as a 1.5-point favorite. However, as of early Saturday night, many books had the game as a pick ‘em with a total of 139.5.
--Thad Matta’s squad saw its four-game winning streak snapped in Tuesday’s 76-74 loss at Michigan. Nevertheless, the Buckeyes hooked up their betting supporters as seven-point road underdogs. DeShaun Thomas had a team-high 17 points in the losing effort, while LaQuinton Ross came off the bench to score 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field.
--Ohio St. has been a single-digit home favorite four times this season, compiling a 3-1 spread record. The Buckeyes have won 12 of their 13 home games while going 8-4 ATS. Their only loss in Columbus came against Kansas.
--Indiana (20-3 SU, 11-10 ATS) is in bounce-back mode after getting beat Thursday night on a buzzer shot at Illinois. The Illini captured a 74-72 win as a seven-point home underdog when Tyler Griffey somehow got wide open to make an easy layup before the horn off an inbounds play on the baseline. Cody Zeller had 14 points and nine rebounds in defeat. Jordan Hulls, one of the nation’s premier perimeter shooters, finished with 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point land.
--Tom Crean’s team is an underdog for the first time this year in this spot. The Hoosiers have prevailed in four of their five true road assignments, but they are 2-3 ATS.
--These Big Ten rivals split a pair of regular-season meetings last year with the home team winning both times. When they played in Columbus, Ohio St. cruised to an 80-63 victory as a 13-point home ‘chalk.’
--The ‘under’ is 12-7 overall for the Buckeyes, 7-5 in their home games.
--The ‘under’ is 9-8 overall for the Hoosiers, but they have seen the ‘over’ hit at a 3-1 clip in their last four games.
--CBS will have the telecast at 1:00 p.m. Eastern.
**Illinois at Minnesota**
--Most books opened Minnesota (17-6 SU, ATS) as a 9.5-point favorite. The total started at 138.5.
--Tubby Smith’s team has lost five of its last seven games, but there’s no reason for the Gophers to hit the panic button. Each of the defeats came to high-level foes with the exception of the loss at Northwestern. The Gophers have dropped to 5-5 in Big Ten play.
--Minnesota has won 12 of its 14 home games at The Barn, posting an 8-6 spread record. The Gophers are 1-1 both SU and ATS in a pair of single-digit home ‘chalk’ situations.
--Illinois (16-8 SU, 9-12 ATS) is coming off its thrilling victory over Indiana as mentioned above. The Illini hooked up money-line supporters with a payout in the plus-250 range (risk $100 to win $250).
--John Groce’s team has been an underdog 10 times, going 5-5 ATS with four outright victories.
--The ‘under’ is 10-8 overall for the Gophers, 6-5 in their 11 home games with a total. The ‘under’ is 4-1 in Minnesota’s last five games (regardless of venue).
--The ‘under’ is 11-9 overall for Illinois, 7-3 in its last 10 games.
--The ‘over’ has hit in three straight head-to-head meetings.
--When these schools met on Jan. 9 in Champaign-Urbana, Minnesota collected an 84-67 win at Illinois as a 1.5-point road ‘chalk.’ The 151 combined points sailed ‘over’ the 140.5-point total Joe Coleman scored a game-high 29 points for the Gophers, who also got a 22-point effort from guard Andre Hollins. Coleman made 10-of-16 shots from the field and Hollins drained 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Trevor Mbakwe added 19 points and 11 rebounds. Brandon Paul had a team-high 21 points for Illinois, but he was only 6-of-17 from the floor and missed five of his six 3-point attempts.
--Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Eastern on The Big Ten Network (channel 610 on DirecTV).
**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**
--Michigan has now lost 11 consecutive games in Madison against Wisconsin. We saw an incredible finish on Saturday in the Badgers’ 65-62 win over the Wolverines in overtime. Tim Hardaway Jr. hit a deep trey to put Michigan ahead by three with 2.4 seconds remaining. But the game got sent to OT when Ben Brust buried a heave just inside halfcourt that looked eerily similar to the attempt by Butler’s Gordon Hayward that was off the mark in the national-title game against Duke a few years ago. Brust knocked down another crucial 3-pointer in the extra session as Bo Ryan’s team won outright as a short home underdog.
--I have never been hesitant to admit it when I’ve been wrong. And there’s no doubt that I was w-r-o-n-g in my criticism of Miami for not attempting to hire Frank Martin two years ago. The Hurricanes got it right with the hiring of former George Mason coach Jim Larranaga, who led his team to another blowout win on Saturday. The ‘Canes destroyed North Carolina by an 87-61 count to remain unbeaten in ACC action.
--Maryland is a 1.5-point home favorite vs. Virginia on Sunday afternoon. Both teams need this one badly.
--Tennessee is a 1.5-point road ‘chalk’ at South Carolina. After missing the last two games, Vols’ starting point guard Trae Golden is expected to return from a hamstring injury.
--Following its huge upset wins over Florida and Kansas, respectively, Arkansas and TCU both lost Saturday (SU and ATS) to Vandy and West Va. Off its huge win over Indiana, is Illinois in the same situation at Minnesota?
--Syracuse is a 15-point home favorite vs. St. John’s. The Red Storm has been a double-digit ‘dog only once this year, winning outright by a 53-52 score at Cincinnati as a 13.5-point puppy.
--The ‘Cuse owns a 6-4 spread record in 10 games as a double-digit favorite.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack
Some notes on Notre Dame's 104-101 win over Louisville, in five OT's
-- Louisville led 56-48 (56-48!!!!) with 0:50 left, then Jerian Grant went bonkers, scoring 12 points in 0:23 (12 points in 0:23!!!!) to tie the game.
-- Garrick Sherman scored 17 points in 22 minutes for Notre Dame; in his previous eight games, Sherman played a total of 29 minutes. He never got into this game until the first overtime, yet he scored 17 points.
-- How does Peyton Siva play 41 minutes and score two points?
-- Russ Smith was 13-16 on foul line, but 4-19 from floor, 0-6 from arc, and looked very untrustworthy to make a sound decision in crunch time.
-- 16 ties, 26 lead changes. Last five-OT game was Baylor-Texas A&M in College Station five years ago (Bears won 116-110).
-- One of the refs couldn't make it to South Bend because of weather, so ref John Gaffney was summoned from Milwaukee, where he worked DePaul-Marquette earlier in day. Gaffney reffed for 105 minutes Saturday.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball Saturday....
As I type this, it is 2 below zero here in upstate New York. If anyone has a condo in Las Vegas they want to sell me, I'm all ears. Cold ears, but listening.
13) Notre Dame 104, Louisville 101, in five OT's-- Will be hard to top this as the best game of the season. Was a lousy game for 39 minutes, then all hell broke loose. Check the box up above for some notes on this game.
12) Wisconsin 65, Michigan 62, OT-- Kid on Badgers stuck a 40-footer at the buzzer to force OT, when Wolverines had fouls to give but didn't foul. Hard to believe this wasn't the most exciting game of the day. It wasn't.
11) Tweet of the Day, from Oakland Grizzlies' coach Greg Kampe:
"Shhhhh. Be vewy vewy quiet. I'm hunting Jackwabbits."
You see, Kampe's team hosted South Dakota State's Jackrabbits Saturday, so in his best Elmer Fudd voice, Kampe sent his team on the floor and pulled the upset, 88-83. Oakland "held" Nate Wolters to 36 (he had 53 Thursday).
10) Illinois State 75, Creighton 72-- Top of the MVC is taking some lumps from middle of the league, which won't help come Selection Sunday.
9) Miami 87, North Carolina 61-- Not only did the Hurricanes crush the Tar Heels, they clowned them too, throwing alley-oops off the backboard for breakaway dunks. That will be remembered down the road in Chapel Hill.
8) UNLV 64, New Mexico 55-- Rebels desperately needed this win, and so did North Carolina, since Rebels are their best non-conference win. UNLV is still trying to find lineup combos that work; all of them would work better if they had a dynamic point guard on the squad. Not even close.
7) Memphis 89, Southern Miss 76-- Josh Pastner takes a lot of grief since he isn't named Calipari, but his Tigers are unbeaten in C-USA. This was a solid win over a Golden Eagle squad that pressures ball really well, and had not lost a conference home game.
6) Oklahoma 72, Kansas 66-- Jayhawks have lost three games in row for first time in eight years; listening to Bill Self after the game, he could accept losing to the Sooners, but was still annoyed about the TCU game. .
5) Texas gets PG Myck Kabongo back for its next game, but they're 10-13, 2-8 in conference play, doubtful he can help them enough to make NCAAs, unless they somehow won the conference tournament. Hopefully he'll do the right thing and play for Texas next year, to improve his NBA stock.
4) Temple 72, Dayton 71-- Dr Naismith spun around in his grave watching end of this game; in the last 0:03, there were three turnovers and 0-5 shooting from the foul line. In three freakin' seconds. There was also a decent amount of horrific officiating. Neither team deserved to win, and the refs didn't really deserve to get paid. Just ask Archie Miller.
3) Northeastern 79, Old Dominion 74, OT-- Monarchs were 2-20, they fired the coach, then they upset Drexel and took first place Huskies to OT, so I'm guessing there is an interesting story behind the firing.
2) Georgia 52, Texas A&M 46-- We generally root for bald coaches who wear glasses, so good to see Mark Fox win his fifth straight game, against an Aggie team playing on short rest after beating Missouri Thursday.
1) I mentioned this a couple weeks ago, it is still true; there is one thing preventing Miami from being ranked #1, not that it matters much- their uniforms aren't blue, and they don't say "DUKE" on the front. Next month there is a tournament, so the polls will be forgotten soon, thank God.

Study group: Sunday’s Top 25 NCB betting notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Indiana Hoosiers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-1.5, 138)
Indiana became the latest top-ranked team to taste defeat the week after they ascended to the No.1 spot. Although an extended stay is highly unlikely, the top-ranked Hoosiers can make their case to remain in that spot with a win Sunday at No. 10 Ohio State. Over the last four weeks, Louisville, Duke, Kansas and Indiana have taken one-week turns as the top-ranked team in the coaches’ poll, only to be dismissed the following week.
Four of the top five teams in the most recent poll suffered at least one loss in the past week while No. 4 Duke isn’t even leading its own conference, placing voters in a bind. The Hoosiers likely lost their grip of the top spot with Thursday’s surprising loss at Illinois, but might be able to make up for it against the Buckeyes, who saw their four-game winning streak snapped Wednesday in an overtime loss at Michigan.
St. John's Red Storm at Syracuse Orange (-16, 131)
Two of the top 10 winningest programs in Division I history renew acquaintances on Sunday when St. John’s attempts to end the country’s longest-active home winning streak when it faces No. 9 Syracuse. The Orange are tied with Marquette atop the Big East standings and have won 36 straight at home, with their last such loss coming Feb. 9, 2011, against Georgetown. But Syracuse is vulnerable at the moment with top outside threat James Southerland and bruising forward DaJuan Coleman both out.
Syracuse – fifth on the D-I wins list – rebounded from its first two conference losses with Monday’s 63-47 victory over Notre Dame. However, the vaunted Orange offense that averaged 82 points in non-conference action is averaging only 65.9 during Big East play. St. John’s – seventh all-time in wins – picked up its sixth victory in seven games with Wednesday’s triumph over Connecticut.
Duke Blue Devils at Boston College Eagles (+12, 145)
Duke will try to continue its winning ways when it travels to Boston College for an ACC game Sunday evening. The No. 4 Blue Devils have won four straight after dropping two of three following the injury to third-leading scorer Ryan Kelly. Duke beat North Carolina State on Thursday night, the same team that toppled the Blue Devils on Jan. 12, the first game Kelly missed with a right foot injury.
Kelly is expected to miss his eighth consecutive game with the injury, leaving fellow seniors Mason Plumlee and Seth Curry to pick up the slack. Plumlee did exactly that against North Carolina State, scoring 30 points in the 98-85 victory, while Curry finished with 26 points for his third straight game with 21 or more. Boston College will try to counter with a starting lineup that features two freshmen and three sophomores. The first two players off the bench are also sophomores.
Illinois Fighting Illini and Minnesota Golden Gophers (-10, 137)
Illinois, which snapped a three-game losing streak with a dramatic 74-72 home upset of No. 1 Indiana on Thursday, will try to build on that momentum at sputtering No. 18 Minnesota, which has dropped five of its last seven games, including a 61-50 setback at Michigan State on Wednesday. It's the second meeting of the season between the Big Ten rivals. The Golden Gophers won the first encounter, 84-67, at Illinois on Jan. 9, handing the Illini their first home loss of the season in the process.
Illinois has gone just 2-5 since the first matchup with the Gophers but Thursday's upset of the Hoosiers could just be the tonic to spark a turnaround for a team that looked like it would be a legitimate Big Ten challenger after whipping Butler, 78-61, to win the EA Sports Maui Invitational in November. In fact, after Thursday's victory over the Hoosiers, which came by way of a Tyler Griffey buzzer-beating layup on an inbounds pass with nine-tenths of a second remaining, the Illini now own four victories over teams currently rated in the top-15: No. 1 Indiana, No. 6 Gonzaga, No. 10 Ohio State and No. 14 Butler.
California Golden Bears at Arizona Wildcats (-13, 132)
Arizona looks to extend its winning streak to five on Sunday when the 7th-ranked Wildcats host California, which has lost 22 of the last 27 meetings in the series. Arizona, which took over sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 without even playing a game on Thursday, has four home games and four road games left in the regular season. California is mired in a five-way tie for fifth place, three games behind Arizona.
The Bears lost 66-62 to Arizona State on Thursday and failed to build on home wins last week over Oregon State and Oregon. Junior guard Allen Crabbe still leads the Pac-12 scoring at 19.3 points per game, but he’s shooting 25 percent (6-for-24) from 3-point range over the last three games. The Bears will need a complete effort from their defense after struggling early against Arizona State. The Wildcats are second in the Pac-12 in scoring at 74.7 points per game.

February is a make-or-break month for college basketball teams. Some coaches are trying to get their squads to peak just in time for the postseason while others are scrambling for a quick fix in the final weeks of the schedule.
We look back over the past five seasons (2007-08 to 2011-12) to find out which college hoops programs rise to the occasion and which ones crumble under the pressure in February.
Best ATS
Records from February games only from 2007-08 to 2011-12.
Indiana State Sycamores (28-11-1 ATS, 23-17 SU)
Just like their most famous alum, Larry Bird, the Sycamores come up big for bettors in the crunch. Indiana State has gone 6-2 ATS in February in each of the past four seasons and is off to a 1-1 SU and ATS start this month, heading into Saturday’s date with Southern Illinois.
Auburn Tigers (26-10-1 ATS, 14-23 SU)
Auburn isn’t a perennial power in the SEC but it has been the conference's most consistent winning bet during the month of February. Since 2008, the Tigers have covered in 70 percent of their February games despite posting a losing record. They went 6-2 ATS last year and are 2-0 ATS to start this month.
Princeton Tigers (26-19 ATS, 27-18 SU)
Got nothing better to do on a cold Friday night in February? Try betting on the Tigers. Princeton, a permanent contender in the Ivy League, has turned up the intensity on the second month of the year. The Tigers went 7-2 ATS in February 2010 and posted a 6-2 ATS mark last February. This year, Princeton is 1-1 ATS going into Friday’s game with Brown.
Notables: Bradley (25-15 ATS), BYU (25-10 ATS), Old Dominion (25-15 ATS), St. Louis (25-12-1 ATS), Texas A&M (25-12 ATS).
Worst ATS
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9-26-2 ATS, 7-30 SU)
Things fall apart for the Jackets in February. Georgia Tech used to be in the mix in the ACC but has fallen on hard times in recent seasons. The Yellow Jackets went 2-6 SU and ATS in February last season and don’t appear to be climbing out of the ACC basement anytime soon, at 2-7 SU and 3-6 ATS in conference play this year.
Air Force Falcons (11-23-1 ATS, 7-28 SU)
Life is tough in the Mountain West Conference. The so-called “mid major” could send as many as five teams to the Big Dance this year and has been on the upswing for past few seasons. So it’s understandable why the Falcons would suck so much in February. The Fly Boys have been getting better, going 6-7-1 ATS in the past two Februarys and owning a 1-1 ATS mark this month.
Providence Friars (11-24-1 ATS, 8-28 SU)
Similar to Air Force’s woes, the Friars face wave after wave of NCAA-bound talent in conference play, eventually hitting a breaking point in February. Providence has long been the Big East whipping boy but actually came through for bettors last year with a 5-3 ATS mark in February. The Friars are getting the job done once again this month, starting with a 2-0 SU and ATS mark.
Notables: Wright State (11-25-5 ATS), East Carolina (12-25-1 ATS), South Carolina (12-25-1 ATS), Tulane (12-23-2 ATS), Villanova (12-27-1 ATS).

February's best over/under college basketball bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
February is the truest time of the season for college basketball teams. Those non-conference wins don’t mean much in the heat of league play. Contenders are discovered and pretenders are unveiled as the schedule rolls toward the postseason.
We looked at the best and worst ATS play in February earlier this week, so let’s break down which teams have the best over and under records in the month of February over the past five seasons (2007-08 to 2011-12).
Best over
Records from just February games over the last five seasons.
Indiana State Sycamores (30-10 over/under, 23-17 SU)
Indiana State is all about February. The Sycamores are the best ATS teams in February over the last five seasons and hold claim to the best over bet as well. They split totals in their eight February games last year (4-4 over/under) but went 26-6 over/under the four previous campaigns. Indiana State is 1-2 over/under this month.
Hofstra Pride (29-10-1 over/under, 27-13 SU)
Hofstra, the top under bet in college basketball right now (1-12 over/under), has been on the other side of the fence in Februarys past. The Pride has gone 19-4-1 over/under in the second month of the year over the past three seasons but is off to a 1-2 over/under count this month.
Valparaiso Crusaders (28-14 over/under, 22-20 SU)
After staying under the total for most of the season, Valpo is beginning to trend toward the over just in time for February. The Crusaders are 7-1 over/under in their last eight games heading into Saturday. Valparaiso went 4-4 over/under last February but was 7-2 over/under in 2011 and 7-1 over/under in 2010.
Notables: Towson (27-12-1 over/under), Bowling Green (26-14 over/under), Southern Illinois (26-13 over/under), Wichita State (26-14 over/under)
Best under
Virginia Cavaliers (7-30 over/under, 11-26 SU)
The Cavs have been under gold in February, posting at least six under paydays in the past four Februarys. Head coach Tony Bennett went 4-18 over/under in his first three seasons at Virginia and has the Cavaliers ranked second in the nation in defense (51.5 points against per game). However, totals have dropped so low, Virginia has begun to show value with the over – going 4-1 over/under in its last five heading into Sunday.
Princeton Tigers (18-27 over/under, 27-18 SU)
Not a surprise here. The originators of the “Princeton offense” – a pass-heavy, motion offense that eats up the shot clock – naturally play under the total. The Tigers defied that logic last season, with a 6-2 over/under mark in February, but went 2-7 over/under in each of the three previous February schedules. This year, the Tigers are 3-3 over/under on the season and 2-1 over/under this month heading into the weekend.
South Florida Bulls (9-27 over/under, 12-24 SU)
The Big East, known for its slowed-down offenses and grueling defensive pressure, will take its toll on some of the weaker programs – like USF. The Bulls rarely see the light from the bottom of the conference and have been the most consistent under play when the going gets tough in the Big East. South Florida is 3-12 over/under the previous two Februarys and 1-1 over/under this month, heading into Saturday.
Notables: Pennsylvania (18-26-1 over/under), UConn (16-25 over/under), St. John’s (16-25-1 over/under), Columbia (15-25-1 over/under), Georgetown (12-25 over/under).

Big Monday Tips
February 10, 2013
**Marquette at Georgetown**
--As of Sunday night, most books were listing Georgetown (17-4 straight up, 10-7 against the spread) as a 4.5-point favorite with a total of 122. Gamblers can most likely anticipate a money-line return around +165 for Marquette.
--Marquette (17-5 SU, 9-9 ATS) is in a first-place tie with Syracuse in the Big East standings with identical 8-2 records in league play. Since losing at Louisville, the Golden Eagles have won back-to-back games at South Florida (70-47) and vs. DePaul (89-78). They failed to cover the number in Saturday’s triumph over the Blue Demons as 14-point favorites. The 167 combined points leaped ‘over’ the 150-point total.
--Vander Blue led the way for Marquette with a game-high 18 points at DePaul. Blue is enjoying a stellar junior campaign, pacing the Golden Eagles by scoring a team-best 15.0 points per game.
--Georgetown has won five in a row both SU and ATS and finds itself one game back of Marquette and the ‘Cuse for the Big East lead. The Hoyas are coming off Saturday’s 69-63 win at Rutgers as 4 ½-point favorites. Markel Starks was the catalyst with a team-high 20 points on just 12 shots. Starks made 8-of-12 from the field and knocked down 3-of-5 from 3-point land. Otto Porter added 19 points, four rebounds and four assists.
--Buzz Williams’s team is 3-2 ATS with a pair of outright wins in five games as an underdog this year. Marquette won outright vs. Wisconsin and at Pittsburgh.
--Georgetown has won 12 of its 13 home games but is only 4-5 ATS. The Hoyas are 3-2 ATS in five games as single-digit home favorites.
--Porter leads Georgetown in scoring (15.0 PPG) and rebounding (8.0 RPG). The sophomore from out of Missouri is making 51.2 percent of his shots from the field and has a team-high 36 steals and 21 blocked shots. Marks is averaging 12.2 PPG.
--These schools met in Milwaukee on Jan. 5 with Marquette capturing a 49-48 win as a 3 ½-point home favorite. The 97 combined points had ‘under’ backers (127.5) cashing an easy winner. The Hoyas’ Greg Whittington was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining. Whittington hit the first two from the charity stripe but after Williams burned a timeout prior to the third free throw, Whittington caught the back iron on the tying attempt. Marks scored a game-high 18 points for Georgetown, while Marquette got 12 points apiece from Blue and Davante Gardner.
--Marquette is 16th in the RPI Rankings with a 4-4 record against RPI Top 50 schools and 8-4 mark against RIP Top 100 foes. Georgetown has an RPI of 23, going 3-3 against the RPI Top 50 and 9-4 against RPI’s Top 100.
--The ‘over’ is 10-7 overall for Marquette, but the ‘under’ is 3-2 in their five true road assignments.
--Totals have been an overall wash in Georgetown games (7-7), but the ‘over’ has hit in each of its last three games.
--ESPN will have television coverage at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.
**Kansas State at Kansas**
--As of Sunday night, most spots had Kansas (19-4 SU, 9-13 ATS) favored by 7.5 or 8 with a total of 129.
--After starting the season with a 19-1 record, Bill Self’s team has suddenly lost three in a row both SU and ATS, including Wednesday’s incomprehensible 62-55 loss at TCU as a 17 ½-point favorite. On Saturday in Norman, Oklahoma snapped a 10-game losing streak against KU by winning a 72-66 decision as a five-point home underdog.
--KU is led by freshman shooting guard Ben McLemore, who is averaging a team-high 16.3 points per game. McLemore pulls down 5.4 boards per contest and is shooting 50.4 percent from the field and 41.8 percent from beyond the arc. Senior center Jeff Withey averages 13.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per game while shooting 56.1 percent from the field. Withey, a San Diego product, has a team-high 93 blocked shots.
--Kansas St. (19-4 SU, 9-9-1 ATS) has won four straight games, going 3-1 ATS. The Wildcats beat up on Iowa St. 79-70 Saturday as 6.5-point home favorites. Rodney McGruder produced 22 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds. Angel Rodriguez added 20 points.
--With an 8-2 record in Big 12 play, Bruce Weber’s team is in first place with a one-game lead over both KU and Oklahoma St.
--KU has won 11 of its 12 home games, going 5-6 ATS. The Jayhawks have only been single-digit home favorites once this year, losing outright to Oklahoma St. as 9.5-point ‘chalk.’
--When these bitter rivals met in Manhattan on Jan. 22, Kansas collected a 59-55 win as a 3.5-point road favorite. This defensive struggle resulted in an easy winner for ‘under’ backers (127.5). Travis Releford scored a team-high 12 points for KU, while Withey and McLemore finished with 11 apiece.
--Kansas St. has been an underdog five times, compiling a 2-3 record both SU and ATS wins outright wins at Oklahoma and vs. Florida (in Kansas City).
--The ‘under’ is 10-9 overall for Kansas, but the ‘over’ is 5-4 in its nine home games with a total.
--Totals have been an overall wash for K-St. both overall (7-7) and on the road (3-3).
--Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.
**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**
--In five seasons at Marquette, Buzz Williams owns a 54-28 record against Big East foes. Very impressive!
--The ‘under’ is 14-3 overall for Cincinnati. Man, the Bearcats really struggle to score sometimes. They couldn’t make anything in the second half of a game they seemingly had control of against Pittsburgh, which rallied for a crucial Big East win Saturday as a short road underdog.
--Minnesota has lost six of its last eight games but the real story from The Barn on Sunday was another huge win for Illinois. Jim Groce showed us he could coach last year when he guided Ohio to the Sweet 16 before losing an overtime heartbreaker to North Carolina. Coming off an upset win at the buzzer over top-ranked Indiana, the Illini won 67-63 over the Gophers as a nine-point underdog. Gamblers taking Illinois on the money line cashed a nice plus-350 ticket (risk $100 to win $350). Leading by one with the shot clock winding down and only 18 ticks remaining, sophomore guard Tracy Abrams drained an audacious step-back trey to insert the dagger.
--Illinois made 11-of-23 from 3-point range against Minnesota. Following his buzzer-beating layup against Indiana, Tyler Griffey had another big game with 16 points.
--Minnesota played without stud forward Rodney Williams, who was nursing a shoulder injury.
--The theme of the week was upsets and California produced Sunday’s biggest stunner. The Bears went into Tuscon and handed Arizona just its third defeat in a 77-69 win as 12.5-point underdogs. They hooked up money-line supporters with a gorgeous +700 return (paid $700 on $100 wagers).
--This Georgia team has won five in a row both SU and ATS to improve to 12-11 overall. The Bulldogs’ next three games are against RIP Top 100 squads: vs. Alabama (63), at Ole Miss (48) and at Arkansas (91).
