NBA TNT doubleheader: Spurs at Knicks, T-Wolves at Nuggets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
San Antonio Spurs at New York Knicks (-1, 206.5)
The New York Knicks' aura of invincibility at Madison Square Garden has been punctured in the past 2 1/2 weeks with three losses in the past five home games. Reversing that trend will not be easy with the red-hot San Antonio Spurs paying a visit on Thursday. The Spurs extended their winning streak to seven games with Wednesday's 117-110 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks and will be out to avenge a four-point home loss to the Knicks on Nov. 15.
New York will be looking to avoid a season-high third straight loss. Despite 45 points from Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks absorbed a 105-100 loss to Portland on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. It was the second 45-point eruption of the season for Anthony, who had missed the previous two games with a knee injury. The loss also marked the long-awaited season debut of forward Amar'e Stoudemire, who had six points and one rebound in 17 minutes off the bench.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports Southwest (San Antonio), MSG (New York)
ABOUT THE SPURS (26-8): Ageless Tim Duncan had a monster game against Milwaukee with 28 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots. Point guard Tony Parker added 23 points and 11 assists, although his six-game streak of shooting at least 50 percent from the floor came to an end. Parker is averaging 23.8 points and nine rebounds over his last four games and has scored at least 20 points in 12 of his last 17. Guard Gary Neal returned to the lineup after missing four games with a calf injury.
ABOUT THE KNICKS (21-10): Easing Stoudemire into the regular rotation is the biggest issue facing New York. The Knicks have no such worries with sixth man J.R. Smith, who is in the midst of his hottest streak of the season. Smith has averaged 25.5 points and recorded a pair of double-doubles in his last six games. Since guard Raymond Felton suffered a fractured right finger, Smith raised his offense another notch, producing games of 27, 28 and 28 points.
TRENDS:
*Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings in New York.
* Knicks are 0-5-1 ATS in their last six games overall.
* Spurs are 8-2-2 ATS in their last 12 vs. NBA Atlantic foes.
* Knicks are 0-5-1 ATS in their last six vs. Western Conference opponents.
BUZZER BEATERS
1. The Spurs are averaging 111.7 points during their winning streak, which includes four victories of at least 20 points.
2. Despite a season-worst nine points from Anthony, New York erased a 12-point deficit in the final seven minutes in the win over the Spurs in November - New York's first victory in San Antonio since 2003.
3. Duncan has blocked a shot in 20 straight games, the longest active streak in the league.
Minnesota Timberwolves at Denver Nuggets (-7, 203.5)
Two days after ending the Los Angeles Clippers' franchise-record 17-game winning streak, the Denver Nuggets continue their three-game homestand Thursday against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Denver handed Los Angeles its first loss since Nov. 26 on Tuesday as six players scored in double figures. The Nuggets have won three of four overall and eight in a row at home, where they are 10-1 on the season.
Minnesota is coming off its third loss in four games, a 106-84 setback to the Jazz in Utah on Wednesday. Kevin Love and Alexey Shved scored 13 points apiece as the Timberwolves shot a season-worst 34.5 percent from the floor. Minnesota has lost four straight on the road and is just 5-10 away from home this campaign.
TV: 9 p.m. ET, Fox Sports North (Minnesota), Altitude (Denver)
ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (14-14): Minnesota matched its season low from 3-point range Wednesday as it was just 2-of-17. Shved made both successful shots on seven attempts while Love was 0-for-4 from beyond the arc. Andrei Kirilenko scored 12 points and pulled down his 4,000th career rebound in the second quarter. Love, who entered shooting 31.8 percent on the road, was 4-of-14 against the Jazz and couldn't explain his inaccuracy. "I had great shots. Even before the game, my shot felt great," he said.
ABOUT THE NUGGETS (18-15): After holding the Clippers to 78 points, Denver improved to 14-3 when allowing less than 100 and 7-2 when holding its opponent under 90. The Nuggets rank second in the league with a plus-136 rebound advantage over their opponents. Los Angeles' winning streak is the second-longest one Denver has snapped. The Nuggets defeated Chicago on Feb. 4, 1996 to halt the Bulls' 18-game run. Guard Andre Miller recorded 12 points and 12 assists Tuesday for his 204th career double-double and 18th as a member of the Nuggets. Denver is 16-2 when Miller notches a double-double.
TRENDS:
* Timberwolves are 1-5 ATS in their last six vs. NBA Northwest foes.
* Nuggets are 5-0 ATS in their last five home games.
* Over is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
* Under is 5-1 in Timberwolves’ last six overall.
BUZZER BEATERS
1. The teams split the first two encounters this season, both of which were played in Minnesota.
2. The Timberwolves have lost 20 of its last 23 meetings with the Nuggets, including five straight in Denver.
3. The Nuggets are 6-1 when two or more players record a double-double in the same game.

Thursday Tips
January 2, 2013
Things quiet down on the NBA front on Thursday night with just two games, as three Western Conference teams take the court. Fresh off snapping the Clippers' 17-game winning streak, the Nuggets look to capitalize on Thursday with the Timberwolves invading the Pepsi Center. The night begins at Madison Square Garden as New York attempts to get on track against streaking San Antonio.
Spurs at Knicks - 7:35 PM EST
San Antonio plays with no rest following Wednesday's victory at Milwaukee, as the Spurs have won seven straight games. Gregg Popovich's club used to struggle on the second of a back-to-back, but San Antonio owns a solid 5-3 SU and 5-2-1 ATS record on no rest this season. The last two times on the road in this situation, the Spurs fell at Portland and Denver, while San Antonio enters Thursday's contest with revenge on its mind.
In the previous meeting between the Spurs and Knicks at the AT&T Center on November 15, New York pulled out a 104-100 triumph as 5 ½-point underdogs. Mike Woodson's team improved to 6-0 with that victory, as Raymond Felton tallied a game-high 25 points, while Carmelo Anthony scored just nine points on 3-of-12 shooting. Felton will miss Thursday's contest with a finger injury, but Amare Stoudemire is back in the Knicks' lineup after making his season debut on Tuesday.
Stoudemire sat out the first 30 games this season due to offseason knee surgery, as he eased into the lineup by scoring six points and pulling down one rebound in 17 minutes of action in a five-point loss to Portland. The Knicks returned home from a 1-2 SU/ATS West Coast swing only to fall to the Blazers, 105-100 as 9 ½-point favorites, while suffering their third defeat in their last five games at the Garden. From the betting standpoint, New York owns a putrid 1-5 ATS record the past six home games, all in the role of a favorite.
The Spurs opened up as one-point underdogs on Thursday, as San Antonio is winless in three tries as a road 'dog this season. The lone cover came as 13-point 'dogs at Miami in late November in which the Spurs sat out Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Tim Duncan in a 105-100 defeat. The other two games were losses in a tough back-to-back spot at Oklahoma City and Denver in mid-December. San Antonio is turning into an 'under' team of late by cashing in eight of the last 11 contests, including a 4-1 mark to the 'under' the previous five away games.
Timberwolves at Nuggets - 9:05 PM EST
George Karl's squad finally figured out the Clippers as Denver snapped L.A.'s 17-game winning streak on Tuesday night, 92-78. The Nuggets improved to a stellar 10-1 SU and 9-2 ATS at the Pepsi Center this season, including three straight wins by at least 12 points. Denver will welcome a Minnesota club coming in with no rest, as the Wolves lost to the Jazz on Wednesday night.
This will not be an easy spot for Minnesota, as road teams on the second of a back-to-back this season playing at Denver are just 1-3 SU/ATS. The lone club to solve this mystery was Miami, who won at Pepsi Center with no rest on November 15 as 3 ½-point 'dogs, 98-93. The Wolves have covered four of seven times on the second of a back-to-back, but went 2-5 SU in those contests.
This is the first meeting between these Northwest Division rivals in Denver this season, as the Wolves and Nuggets split the first two matchups at the Target Center. Denver knocked off Minnesota in Kevin Love's season debut on November 21 in a 101-94 triumph as 3 ½-point 'chalk,' as the Nuggets rallied from a 17-point deficit. The Wolves picked up revenge three weeks later by holding off the Nuggets, 108-105, but Denver cashed again as four-point underdogs. In spite of making just 2-of-14 shots from three-point range, the Wolves took care of business at the line by converting 30-of-37 free throws.
The Nuggets knocked off the Clippers on Monday by 14, but did so without point guard Ty Lawson, who sat out the contest with an Achilles' strain. Lawson is listed as questionable for Thursday's game, while Minnesota point guard Ricky Rubio is out with back spasms. The Wolves shot just 34% from the floor in last night's defeat at Utah, while scoring 39 second-half points in a 106-84 setback.

Best and worst NBA non-conference bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The NBA title may rest with the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference but not even LeBron & Co. can overcome the Western Conference’s dominance in the NBA.
Heading into Thursday, the West owns a 120-81 SU record against the East and has translated that into a 116-81-3 ATS mark, covering in almost 58 percent of non-conference meetings this season.
Here’s a look at the best and worst bets when going up against the alternate conference:
Best non-conference bets
Golden State Warriors (13-2 SU, 12-3 ATS vs. Eastern Conference)
The Warriors have been one of the bigger surprises of the first chunk of the schedule, posting a 20-11-1 ATS mark out of the gates. A good portion of those profits have come versus Eastern Conference opposition, including a seven-game road swing on the right side of the county in which Golden State finished 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS in mid December.
Houston Rockets (12-2 SU, 12-2 ATS vs. Eastern Conference)
Houston should think about relocating to the East with the way its dealt with non-conference foes. The Rockets, who are just 6-12 SU in the West, have been money in the bank versus teams from the East. It helps that the majority of those games versus the East came inside the Toyota Center. Houston’s run-and-gun style has also led to an 8-6 over/under count in those non-conference competitions.
San Antonio Spurs (12-2 SU, 12-2 ATS vs. Eastern Conference)
The Spurs added to their sterling non-conference record with a seven-point win over Milwaukee Wednesday. San Antonio is currently on a stretch of four straight games versus Eastern Conference opponents, winning SU and ATS over the Nets and Bucks before visiting New York Thursday and hosting Philadelphia Saturday. The Spurs are scoring an average of 108.7 points versus Eastern foes – almost five points more than against Western teams.
Worst non-conference bets
Chicago Bulls (4-8 SU, 2-10 ATS vs. Western Conference)
The Bulls have lost three in a row to Western Conference teams, most recently falling SU and ATS to Houston on Christmas Day. Chicago’s dreaded “Circus Trip” to start the season played a hand in this terrible record. The Bulls won just one game SU and ATS in four Western Conference stops back in November and their only paydays came versus Phoenix and Dallas.
Charlotte Bobcats (2-14 SU, 4-11 ATS vs. Western Conference)
No matter what conference the Bobcats take on, they’re a terrible bet. Charlotte has been bullied by Western Conference opponents in the first part of the season, most recently going 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS on a Western road trip that took the Bobcats to Los Angeles, Phoenix, Golden State and Denver. Charlotte did deliver for backers in defeat to New Orleans last weekend, just covering in a 98-95 loss as a 3.5-point underdog.
Milwaukee Bucks (2-7 SU, 1-8 ATS vs. Western Conference)
The Bucks haven’t met up with many Western Conference foes but when they have, it’s been bad for backers. Milwaukee fell to its current record with a SU and ATS loss to San Antonio Wednesday and takes on Houston, one of the best West-versus-East bets, at home Friday. The Bucks are averaging just under 94 points per game versus Western opposition, compared to 97.3 versus conference competition.

Lakers at Clippers: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Los Angeles Clippers at Los Angeles Lakers (-4.5, 205.5)
The battle of Los Angeles has a different feel with the Clippers possessing the second-best record in the Western Conference and the Lakers floundering below .500. The teams meet Friday at the Staples Center – the Clippers are the “home” team – with the Lakers aiming to cut into their nine-game deficit to the Pacific Division-leading Clippers. The Lakers lost to the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday while the Clippers have dropped two straight following a franchise-record 17-game winning streak.
The Lakers have their worst record after 31 games since a 12-19 start during the 2002-03 season. If the season ended today, they would miss the playoffs. “It’s frustrating,” point guard Steve Nash said. “We’re in a tough position and we really have a lot of ground to make up. We’re not finding the answers right now. So many situations just seem new, and I think we’re struggling to find that little bit of connectivity that makes a team a team.” The Clippers have lost their last two games by a combined 35 points and set season lows for shooting percentage in both contests – 38.5 percent against Denver on Tuesday and 36.4 percent against Golden State on Wednesday.
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Time Warner Cable SportsNet (Lakers), Prime Ticket (Clippers)
ABOUT THE LAKERS (15-16): A recent move to small forward hasn’t curtailed the effectiveness of Kobe Bryant, who scored 36 points in the loss to the 76ers. Bryant has scored 30 or more points in 13 of the past 15 games but is becoming increasingly frustrated over Los Angeles’ inability to put together a long winning stretch. “We were just stuck in the mud,” Bryant said after the loss to Philadelphia. “As individuals, we all have to figure out how to get ourselves ready each and every game to have a high-level game. That’s a big thing when you’re starting to age. It’s tough and it takes a lot of commitment.” Bryant scored 40 points when the Lakers lost to the Clippers on Nov. 2.
ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (25-8): Backup guard Jamal Crawford had 24 points in the loss to Golden State for his 13th 20-point outing of the season. The performance was impressive considering Crawford injured his left foot one night earlier against Denver. “It’s a sprained foot, close to the ankle, too,” Crawford said. “It limits you a lot, that’s for sure.” Forward Blake Griffin is struggling and has averaged just 9.7 points over the last three games. Griffin has just one double-double in his last six outings.
TRENDS:
* Clippers are 8-1 ATS in their last nine home games.
* Over is 6-0 in the last six meetings.
* Lakers are 1-6 ATS in the last seven meetings in Los Angeles.
* Over is 4-1 in Lakers’ last five road games.
BUZZER BEATERS
1. The Clippers won the first meeting this season but the Lakers have won four of the past six overall.
2. Nash is averaging 12.2 points and 9.6 assists in five games since returning from a leg injury.
3. Clippers F Caron Butler is expected to play after missing the loss to Golden State due to personal reasons.
