NBA game of the day: Clippers at Grizzlies
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies (-2.5, 184)
The Memphis Grizzlies did the unthinkable on Saturday - they allowed another team to score at least 100 points. Looking tired on the second night of a back-to-back, the Grizzlies got blown out at Dallas and will be looking to bounce back when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. The Clippers are coming off an ugly loss of their own and have struggled a bit on the road, dropping their last two.
Memphis had allowed an opponent to reach 100 points only twice previously, including the opening game of the season when Los Angeles got 29 points from Jamal Crawford in a 101-92 victory at Staples Center. But after squeezing out an overtime victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, the Grizzlies had little left the next night and had to endure a 104-83 loss to the Mavericks. The Clippers had their 13-game home winning streak end when they were outscored 29-18 in the fourth quarter of a 104-101 loss to lowly Orlando on Saturday.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), SportSouth (Memphis)
ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (28-9): Los Angeles is not far behind the Grizzlies in terms of its team defense but could not get the stops it needed late in Saturday’s contest. That snapped a three-game overall winning streak for the Clippers, who are opening up a three-game road trip at Memphis and will play 14 of their next 17 away from Staples Center. Chris Paul was dominant in the losing effort again on Saturday with 16 assists and only two turnovers. The MVP candidate is averaging 13.5 assists over the past four contests. Paul collected 12 points and 12 assists in the Oct. 31 meeting with Memphis as the Clippers put six players in double figures and shot 51.4 percent from the floor.
ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (24-11): Memphis had a four-game winning streak snapped in the loss to the Mavericks and is still one of only two teams in the NBA holding opponents to a average of less than 90 points (89.7). The Grizzlies could have attempted to keep it closer against Dallas but elected to sit all five starters for the entire fourth quarter to rest up for Monday. Rudy Gay was the only starter to reach double figures with 12 points. Gay went for 24 points in the opener against the Clippers and Zach Randolph pulled down 16 rebounds but Memphis could not get the job done defensively and went 2-for-14 from 3-point range.
TRENDS:
* Clippers are 1-5 ATS in their last six games following a loss.
* Grizzlies are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.
* Over is 4-1 in Clippers’ last five overall.
* Under is 6-1 in Grizzlies’ last seven games following a loss.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. The Clippers beat the Grizzlies in a seven-game playoff series last spring, taking the clinching game in Memphis 82-72.
2. Los Angeles F Grant Hill (knee) made his season debut on Saturday and played six minutes.
3. Memphis G Mike Conley is shooting 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from 3-point range in the last six games.

NBA's fastest and slowest offensive teams
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Handicapping NBA totals without using offensive pace is like trying to build a shed with just a glue gun – you’re missing a few important tools there bub.
Offensive pace, a stat made famous by former ESPN NBA analyst and current Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Memphis Grizzlies John Hollinger, is the average number of possessions a team has per game.
For NBA total bettors, possessions mean points and points are the name of the game capping the over/under. Here’s a look at the three teams with the highest offensive pace and the three with the lowest, and how books are dealing with those teams’ totals.
Stats prior to action on Sunday, Jan. 12
Fastest offensive pace
Houston Rockets - 99.3 (22-16 over/under)
Houston has rocket fuel in their Nike’s with James Harden and Jeremy Lin headline a high-octane backcourt. The Rockets are second in the league in scoring (105.4) but have also given up a ton of points, allowing 103.3 ppg – 28th in the league. That’s an old fashion recipe for overs.
Los Angeles Lakers – 97.5 (19-16-1 over/under)
The Lakers pace is averaging 103.1 points, with a push from offensively-minded head coach Mike D’Antoni. With Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard on the shelf, L.A.’s has gone to a smaller, quicker lineup which could see its possession go up even further.
San Antonio Spurs/Denver Nuggets – 96.8 (19-20-0 over/under / 19-19-0 over/under)
The Spurs inclusion to this list may be a surprise to some, what with their aging core of superstars. San Antonio is making the most of all those possessions, averaging 104.8 points on 48.3 percent shooting a night – fourth best in the NBA. Denver is cut from a similar cloth, scoring 102 points on 46.4 percent shooting – fifth in the league.
Slowest offensive pace
New Orleans Hornets – 90.2 (18-18-0 over/under)
The Hornets only average 92 points a night but have seen a slight boost in scoring since the return of guard Eric Gordon. However, books may have adjusted a little too much for Gordon’s return. New Orleans slow-motion pace has gone 3-4 over/under in those games.
Brooklyn Nets – 90.4 (15-20-1 over/under)
The offensive pace has picked up since the Nets canned Avery Jones and handed the keys to P.J. Carlesimo. In the eight games since the coaching change, Brooklyn is averaging more than 102 points per game, posting a 5-3 over/under count. On the year, the Nets average just 96.2 points.
Indiana Pacers – 92.4 (13-23-1 over/under)
No team has a more misleading nickname than the Pacers. Indiana’s pace isn’t anywhere near Indy 500 speeds, making it one of the best under plays in the NBA. The Pacers are among the bottom dwellers in scoring (91.1) and haven’t been able to make up for the loss of Danny Granger, who won’t be back until February – maybe.

Clippers at Rockets: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Los Angeles Clippers at Houston Rockets (+1, 208)
The Los Angeles Clippers turned in perhaps their most impressive performance of the season on Monday, kicking off a three-game road trip by crushing the Memphis Grizzlies without All-Star point guard Chris Paul in the lineup. Paul sat out the 99-73 rout of the Grizzlies due to a bruised right kneecap and he will be a game-time decision for Tuesday's matchup with the Houston Rockets. It was the lowest point total allowed by Los Angeles and started a stretch in which it plays 14 of 17 games away from home.
The Rockets will be happy to be back home - even if it's for only one game - after going winless on a three-game road trip to New Orleans, Boston and Philadelphia. The Rockets had won five straight prior to the recent skid and will be facing a four-game road trip following the matchup with the Clippers. The Rockets averaged 115.8 points during their five-game run but saw that total dip to 90 points in the third-game skid. In all, Houston will play 12 of 17 games away from home in January.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), Comcast SportsNet Houston
ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (29-9, 23-15-0 ATS): Eric Bledsoe made his first start of the season in place of Paul and scored 14 points to go along with four assists and two steals. Reserves Jamal Crawford and Matt Barnes scored 16 points apiece and Grant Hill had eight points in his second appearance of the season as Los Angeles' bench outscored the starters 54-45. Hill played 17 minutes and went 3-of-5 from the field while collecting four rebounds and four assists. Barnes is averaging 14 points in his last four games.
ABOUT THE ROCKETS (21-17, 21-16-1 ATS): While James Harden has scored at least 20 points in 20 consecutive games, backcourt mate Jeremy Lin has struggled with his outside shooting during the three-game losing streak. Lin averaged 9.3 points on the road trip while shooting 10-of-34 overall and 2-of-10 from 3-point range. Lin had hit more than one 3-pointer only twice in his last 24 games. The offensive struggles haven't affected Lin's defense - he has at least three steals in four consecutive games.
TRENDS:
* Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
* Over is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings in Houston.
* Clippers are 7-2 ATS in their last nine vs. NBA Southwest.
* Rockets are 6-1 ATS in their last seven home games.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. The Clippers won all three meetings last season, including a two-point overtime victory in Houston.
2. The Rockets are shooting 26.1 percent (24-of-92) from behind the arc in the last three games.
3. Paul sat out his first game of the season. He had 16 assists in each of his two previous games.

Clippers visit Houston Tuesday, likely minus Paul
LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS (29-9)
at HOUSTON ROCKETS (21-17)
Tip-off: Tuesday, 8:05 p.m. ET
Line: Houston -3, Total: 206.5
One night after dismantling Memphis without their star point guard, the Clippers continue their road trip against a slumping Rockets team on Tuesday night.
Los Angeles crushed the Grizzlies on Monday night despite Chris Paul sitting out with a bruised right kneecap, outshooting them 46.1% to 30.3% FG in a 99-73 laugher. That ended a three-game ATS road losing skid and gives the Clippers four wins in the past five contests. Houston is coming off an 0-3 (SU and ATS) road trip where it was beaten by a combined 28 points, but the team is 7-1 SU (6-2 ATS) in its past eight home games. These clubs are meeting for the first time this season after L.A. swept the Rockets (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) in the 2011-12 campaign. Paul is doubtful to return for Tuesday's game, but Houston could also be without its starting point guard, Jeremy Lin, who is questionable due to a sprained ankle.
Can the Rockets stop their slide on Tuesday night? For the answer, connect to NBA Best Bets for all the Expert picks throughout the entire 2012-13 season. StatFox Brian is 22-13 ATS (63%) on NBA Best Bets since Dec. 23, giving him a 55% ATS mark (61-51-3) for the season. StatFox Scott has a season Best Bets mark of 53.1% ATS (52-46), with Gary going 6-3 ATS since Jan. 9 to boost him to 52.3% ATS for the season. The four experts are collectively 51.1% ATS (230-220-11) on Best Bets for the season. For NBA Totals, Scott continues to have a profitable year at 53-40 (57%) for his season NBA totals.
Los Angeles is one of the better offensive teams in the league with 101.7 PPG (7th in NBA), but its defense has been even more impressive (92.8 PPG allowed, 4th in NBA). With Paul sitting out on Monday, Eric Bledsoe did an admirable job of filling in with 14 points, four assists, zero turnovers and a +10 rating in his 28 minutes of action. The other six reserves also had a huge performance against the Grizzlies with a collective 54 points, 26 rebounds, nine assists and a +97 rating. SF Matt Barnes (11.2 PPG, 5.2 RPG) led the charge with 16 points and eight rebounds, while SG Jamal Crawford (16.2 PPG) also added 16 points, albeit on 5-of-14 shooting. PF Blake Griffin (17.7 PPG, 8.6 RPG) played just 25 minutes to stay fresh for Tuesday's contest, but he still had 10 points, six boards and five assists in his limited action. In last year's series sweep over Houston, Griffin had 18.0 PPG (52.4% FG) and 9.3 RPG.
Houston continues to lead the NBA in scoring (105.4 PPG), hitting 45.9% FG (8th in NBA). But the club has hit just 28.3% three-pointers during the three-game losing skid, while losing the rebounding edge with a minus-4.3 RPG in these three defeats. Lin was able to take part in Tuesday's shoot-around, and expects to play. He's just hoping he shoots a lot better than he has during his team's losing skid, going 10-for-34 (29%), including 2-of-13 FG in the loss at Philadelphia. SG James Harden (26.5 PPG, 4th in NBA) has had no such slump this season at 46% FG, and he has ripped off 20 straight games of 20+ points, averaging 29.0 PPG on 50% FG with 5.3 APG during this impressive run. But the Clippers have defended him very well in the past, as Harden averages just 10.5 PPG on 33% FG in 11 career meetings with Los Angeles. SF Chandler Parsons (14.4 PPG, 6.2 RPG) is also heating up in the past four games with 17.3 PPG on 51% FG. In two games versus the Clippers as a rookie, he made 10-of-14 shots (71.4%). PF Patrick Patterson (11.9 PPG) will likely be tasked with keeping Blake Griffin in check, but he has made just 6-of-20 shots during his team's losing skid. SF Carlos Delfino (9.9 PPG) continues to provide valuable minutes off the bench, as his 16 points in Saturday's loss at Philly gives him 13.3 PPG on 48% FG and 51% threes in the past six games.

Tuesday Tips
January 14, 2013
Six games take place on the Tuesday NBA card with plenty of intriguing matchups in the Western Conference. The Lakers go for their second straight victory as the Bucks venture out to Southern California, while the Blazers and Nuggets hook up in a Northwest Division battle. We'll start in the Lone Star State as the Rockets attempt to get on track against the Clippers.
Clippers at Rockets - 8:05 PM EST
Los Angeles is playing with no rest after Monday's rout of Memphis, as Chris Paul missed his first game of the season with a contusion in his right kneecap. The All-Star guard suffered the injury late in Saturday's setback to Orlando, as the Clippers posted a 3-3 SU/ATS record in the six games Paul missed last season.
The Rockets return to the Toyota Center off a dreadful road trip, losing all three games on the highway. Houston's dynamic offense broke the 100-point plateau just once, coming in Saturday's 107-100 defeat at Philadelphia as one-point underdogs. Kevin McHale's team has suffered through three of losing skids of three games this season, but has never dropped four straight.
The Clippers are in a stretch playing 14 of 17 games away from Staples Center, while compiling a 1-4 ATS record on the road without rest. Los Angeles is in the middle of a nice 'over' run, hitting the 'over in six of the last eight games. The Clippers and Rockets are meeting for the first time this season, as Los Angeles captured all three matchups last season, including an overtime triumph in Houston.
Blazers at Nuggets - 9:05 PM EST
Denver concludes a four-game homestand, as the Nuggets seek their sixth consecutive victory. George Karl's team rallied from a 10-point deficit to knock off the Warriors on Sunday as six-point 'chalk,' 116-105. The Nuggets play with revenge on Tuesday after the Blazers upended Denver at the Rose Garden, 101-93 as six-point 'dogs on December 20.
The Blazers pulled off that home triumph without LaMarcus Aldridge, who missed the game with an ankle injury. Portland hasn't had much luck at the Pepsi Center over the years, losing six straight meetings at Denver, while putting together a 1-9 SU/ATS the last 10 visits to Colorado dating back to 2007.
The Nuggets are known for their uptempo style of play, but Denver has cashed the 'under' in four of the last six home contests. Since covering five straight games in mid-December, the Nuggets have been inconsistent by compiling a 2-5 ATS record off an ATS win. Portland is suddenly becoming a solid play on the highway, covering three of the last four road contests.
Bucks at Lakers - 10:35 PM EST
Los Angeles snapped a six-game skid on Sunday by routing Cleveland, 113-93, while limiting an opponent to less than 100 points for the first time since December 28. Dwight Howard returned to the Lakers' lineup after missing three games with a labrum issue, as the All-Star center put up 22 points and 14 rebounds in L.A.'s first win of 2013.
The Bucks rallied from a 20-point deficit to stun the Raptors on Sunday afternoon, 107-96 as 2 ½-point road 'dogs. Milwaukee improved to 3-1 SU/ATS since Scott Skiles was removed as head coach, while the Bucks broke the 100-point mark in each victory during this stretch. The next three games for the Bucks take place against Western Conference foes, as Milwaukee owns a dreadful 2-9 ATS record versus interconference competition.
The Lakers are riding a three-game 'under' streak, as each total ranged between 209 and 217 ½ (Tuesday's total opened at 212). Mike D'Antoni's club has broken the 100-point mark in 20 of the last 22 games, while Los Angeles has covered just four of its last 11 home contests. The Bucks grabbed the only meeting last season at the Bradley Center, 100-89 as 4 ½-point 'dogs, as Kobe Bryant and Metta World Peace were the only two regulars in the Lakers' lineup that night who are still on the team.

Heat at Warriors: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Miami Heat at Golden State Warriors (+2, 202)
The Miami Heat have had a tough time on their current road trip and are now dealing with questions surrounding Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh being benched at the end of a loss at Utah on Monday. Perhaps coach Eric Spoelstra was just trying to save the legs of two of his best players for Wednesday, when those two will have to chase around Stephen Curry and David Lee when Miami visits the Golden State Warriors.
Golden State will have its hands full guarding LeBron James, who needs 18 points to become the youngest player in NBA history to reach 20,000 in his career. The reigning MVP has been the bright spot of an otherwise disastrous trip, shooting 55.4 percent in four games as the Heat have dropped three of four. The Warriors have lost three of four as well, marking their worst four-game span since early November. Golden State beat the Heat in Miami on Dec. 12, getting a layup from rookie Draymond Green with 0.9 seconds left to secure a 97-95 win.
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Sun Sports (Miami), Comcast SportsNet Bay Area (Golden State)
ABOUT THE HEAT (24-12): Miami decided to leave Wade on the bench for the entire fourth quarter on Monday as James and the reserves nearly overcame a 21-point deficit before suffering a 104-97 setback against the Jazz. Wade appeared dismayed in his postgame comments, “Coach makes the calls,” he said. “I’m just a player.” Bosh sat for all but 16 seconds of the fourth quarter and struggled on the glass when he was on the floor, pulling down one rebound in 27 minutes. Miami is last in the NBA in rebounding and has seen its offense lose focus of late as well. Monday marked the fifth time in the last six games that the Heat had failed to reach 100 points. Still, Miami has a chance to pull out a .500 trip if it can slip past Golden State and take out the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.
ABOUT THE WARRIORS (23-13): Golden State got 27 points from Klay Thompson and 22 points and 13 rebounds from Lee in the win at Miami while Curry was held to nine points. Curry is dealing with some knee pain and did not fully participate in practice on Tuesday. The star guard, who hit seven 3-pointers in the 116-105 loss at Denver on Sunday, is expected to play against the Heat. It was the defense that broke down against the Nuggets, allowing 37 points in the fourth quarter to squander an eight-point lead at the beginning of the frame. The Warriors committed seven of their 18 turnovers in the fourth quarter. Golden State can be encouraged by its offensive performance in that game, however, after it was a lack of scoring that did the team in against the Clippers and Grizzlies last week.
TRENDS:
* Heat are 1-6 ATS in their last seven road games.
* Warriors are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.
* Over is 4-1 in Warriors last five overall.
* Heat are 1-4 ATS in the last 5 five meetings.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. James (28 years, 17 days) will be the youngest by over a year to reach the 20,000 mark, beating Kobe Bryant (29 years, 122 days). He will be the seventh-fastest in terms of games played, behind Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor and Allen Iverson.
2. Golden State has taken back-to-back games in the series, including a 111-106 overtime victory at home on Jan. 10, 2012.
3. Miami F Shane Battier (hamstring) has missed three straight games and is questionable for Wednesday.

Heat at Lakers: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Miami Heat at Los Angeles Lakers (-2.5, 205)
LeBron James is fresh off becoming the youngest player in NBA history to reach 20,000 career points as he leads the Miami Heat into Thursday’s contest against the host Los Angeles Lakers. James had 25 points and 10 rebounds in Wednesday’s 92-75 victory over the Golden State Warriors. The superstar reached the milestone at 28 years, 17 days old. The previous fastest was Kobe Bryant of the Lakers, who did it at 29 years and 122 days.
Los Angeles has a modest two-game winning streak after losing its previous six contests. The Lakers won games over the Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks by a combined 36 points. In his second game back from a shoulder injury, center Dwight Howard contributed 31 points and 16 rebounds in Tuesday’s win over the Bucks. Miami is 2-3 on a six-game road swing that ends against the Lakers. The Heat return for two home games and then head right back out for four more road tilts.
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT
ABOUT THE HEAT (25-12, 18-19 ATS): James also reached 5,000 career assists in the contest against the Warriors. In terms of games played, James reached 20,000 points in 726 regular-season contests, which is seventh-fastest. Wilt Chamberlain was the fastest on that scale, making it in 499 games. Nonetheless, James was thrilled about being the youngest ever to reach the milestone. “It means everything,” James said. “It means a lot. First of all, like I continue to say, it means I’ve been able to be healthy. To be out on the floor and do what I love to do, I love the game of basketball and I try to give everything to the game. And hopefully it continues to give back to me.”
ABOUT THE LAKERS (17-21, 16-21-1 ATS): Forward Pau Gasol is expected to return after missing five straight games due to a concussion. Gasol has begun making significant progress and would have to be cleared by doctors on Thursday before he could take the court. “It’s been a learning experience,” Gasol said after Wednesday’s practice. “The struggling of getting up every day and not getting better, constant headaches, being bothered by light or noise and not knowing what the next day will be like or not knowing when you’ll be healthy. You do a little research about concussions and it’s an unfortunate hit, but those can happen any day or any game.”
TRENDS:
* Heat are 0-5 ATS in their last five games following a win.
* Lakers are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four vs. NBA Southeast foes.
* Under is 4-0 in Lakers’ last four overall.
* Heat are 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. The Lakers are 9-4 against Miami in games played at the Staples Center.
2. The Heat are allowing just 85.4 points over their last seven outings.
3. Lakers F Earl Clark is questionable due to a bout with gastroenteritis.
