Lot of crazy results early on; Iona loses to Quinnipiac, then beats Wake Forest by 30; Washington loses to Albany at home, then flies cross the country and beats Seton Hall. This period is little like spring training in baseball; have to let these teams get their legs, before they rise or sink to whatever level they'll wind up at. .
-- Florida won its first two games, beating Wisconsin by 18 last game; Gators are shooting 61% inside arc so far- only problem was holding on to the ball. Middle Tennessee beat couple of stiff teams, but they beat UCLA/Ole Miss LY. Sun Belt road underdogs are 2-10 vs spread.
-- Richmond is 3-0, allowing 52.7 ppg; they beat UNCW by 43. Spiders are shooting 41% behind arc, but now hit road, move up in class, facing Minnesota squad that beat three stiffs by 36-26-29 points. Gophers are facing Duke in next game Thursday. A-16 road underdogs are 2-5.
-- Akron is 2-2, losing pair of OT games; Zips are shooting just 38.1% inside arc, 37.8% outside; go figure. Penn State is 2-1 after winning awful OT game with Providence Friday (trailed 16-14 at half). A-16 underdogs are 2-5 against spread. MAC single digit favorites are 1-5.
-- Oklahoma State is 3-0 with OT win over Akron; Cowboys have held opponents to 33.6% inside arc, but are moving up in class vs NC State team that won first three games by 37-17-18 games; Wolfpack is #4 in country in eFG% (63.2%), making 45% behind arc, 61% inside it.
-- Tennessee won two of first three games, losing to Oklahoma State by 17 Friday; Vols are fouling too much early on. UMass won its first two games by total of 5 points, then lost by 18 to NC State. Minutemen are playing at face pace, but are still young, with one senior in rotation.
-- Charleston lost first two games of tourney on its home court by 11 to St John's, 4 to Auburn, scoring just 53 ppg; they're turning ball over on 25.8% of possessions, which is poor. Boston College lost to Baylor by 16, Dayton by 10. ACC teams are 10-3 vs spread away from home.
-- Washington was up 16 at half yesterday, needed 13-2 run in OT in an odd win over Seton Hall team that hit 12-23 behind arc; Huskies are an offense-based team. Ohio State held off gritty URI by 11 Saturday; they made 51% of 3's in wins over teams ranked #221/#259.
-- Rhode Island coach Hurley played at Seton Hall; his Rams play very hard, but lack talent; they're scoring 54.3 ppg, shooting 26% behind arc in 0-3 start. Three Rams played 36+ minutes Saturday. Seton Hall was down 16 at half, made 12-23 from arc but lost to Washington in OT.
-- Auburn lost to Murray State by 20 but won at Charleston by 4; they are shooting 28.9% outside arc, 38.8% inside it, scoring 58.3 ppg in 2-1 start. Dayton is shooting 41% behind arc but isn't getting to line much. Atlantic 16 single digit favorites are 5-6 against the spread.
-- St John's led Murray State most of way Friday but lost by 5; they're shooting 23.9% behind arc, not forcing many turnovers, but are blocking 18% of opponents' shots. Baylor is shooting 61% inside arc- they beat BC by by 10, before Colorado avenged LY's NCAA loss by a hoop.
-- Murray State held first three foes to 16.7% behind arc, but now they are playing well-coached Colorado squad that has one senior in rotation. Young Buffs beat Baylor by hoop Friday, avenging loss in LY's NCAA tourney- they're making 40% of treys. Pac-12 road teams are 5-3.
-- New Mexico won its first two games by 7-5 points, rallying from 16 down to beat Davidson in opener; Lobos don't use bench much, but had Saturday off. George Mason scored just 57 ppg in 2-1 start, making 52.1% of foul shots, with all three games decided by 4 or less points.
-- Stanford is off to 3-0 start, with 13-point win over Fullerton, pretty good team; Pac-12 home favorites of less than 15 points are 7-1 against spread. Belmont starts two juniors, three seniors; they've played couple stiff teams so far, but they're very well-coached. We'll see 'em in March.

Clemson Tigers: The first day of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando concludes with the Tigers (2-0 straight-up, 1-0 against the spread) taking on the 'Zags. Coach Brad Brownell begins his third season at Clemson with a search for new guards to run the team after Andre Young and Tanner Smith, last year's top scorers, departed. The Tigers do have experience in the paint, however, with Milton Jennings and Devin Booker back in the fold. Clemson opened with a 77-44 skate past Presbyterian in an unlined affair, then followed up with a 72-55 victory at Furman as 11-point chalk. Sophomore Rod Hall has assumed the duties at point and gives the Tigers solid perimeter defense. Clemson ranks among the early leaders in protecting the basketball with just 14 turnovers combined in the two games so far. The Tigers are also 25th in the nation, hitting 51.3 percent of their shots from the field.
Gonzaga Bulldogs: Coach Mark Few has the Bulldogs (3-0 SU and ATS) off and running with wins and point-spread covers in all three games to begin the 2012-13 campaign. Currently ranked 16th and 17th in the USA Today Coaches and AP polls, respectively, Gonzaga's three victories have been by at least 34 points, including a 34-point rout vs. West Virginia as an 11-point favorite on Nov. 12. The 'Dogs appear to have found a replacement for Robert Sacre's big presence inside as Przemek Karnowski has taken over and leads the team with 16 points per game. Six players are scoring at least 11 points per game, including Kevin Pangos on the point. This is a very talented and deep frontcourt with Elias Harris and Guy Landry Edi joining Karnowski inside, and the Bulldogs will also have 7-footer Kelly Olynyk available for this game after he served a three-game suspension.

--West Virginia looked awful in 84-50 debacle at Gonzaga 10 days ago, expect better showing here; Huggins has young team that will improve as season goes on. Marist has all five starters back from 14-18 team, but a 1-2 start includes losses to Stony Brook/Colgate, not a good sign.
-- Davidson has 5 starters back from 25-8 team, but lost at New Mexico, Milwaukee to start season- they lost to Vanderbilt last two years, 87-83 at home LY, 80-52 in Nashville in '11. Commodores lost all 5 starters on LY's 25-11 team- they got crushed 74-48 at Oregon in only road game.

Las Vegas Hosts Three Key College Basketball Games Friday

Iowa State Cyclones: Action in the Global Sports Classic gets underway Friday when the Cyclones (4-0 straight-up, 0-0 against the spread) face Cincinnati at the Thomas & Mack Center. This will be the first lined affair for Iowa State, which moved to 4-0 with an 86-57 rout of North Carolina A&T on Tuesday, dominating the glass with a 52-28 rebounding edge.
Cincinnati Bearcats: Also putting on a rebounding clinic this year are the Bearcats (4-0 SU, 0-1 ATS), who rank first in the country with 53.5 boards per contest. Those numbers have come against a weak schedule, like Iowa State has played, and Coach Mick Cronin's crew is led so far by junior Sean Kilpatrick (19.5 points per game) on the offensive end while junior Justin Jackson (8.0 rebounds per game) is the top rebounder despite averaging just 17 minutes per contest.

Oregon Ducks: Drawing the tournament hosts at the Global Sports Classic are the Ducks (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS), who reach Sin City unbeaten and having covered their last two trips to the floor. Four players are scoring in double figures, paced by senior forward E.J. Singler (12.8 ppg), the younger brother of former Duke star Kyle Singler. Oregon was 7-7 last season away from home, eventually falling to Washington in the NIT quarterfinals.
UNLV Rebels: Everything sets up for the Runnin' Rebels (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) to capture the tourney on their home floor, but Coach Dave Rice's squad will have to shake off a little rust with nearly a week off since their last game. UNLV comes in ranked 18th in both polls and features one of the nation's top freshmen in forward Anthony Bennett, who is averaging a team-high 17 points in the early going.

Creighton Bluejays: Not all of the college hoops action this holiday weekend is taking place at the T&M. Over in the Orleans Arena, the Las Vegas Invitational is also getting underway on Friday, and the lineup includes one of the top mid-majors with the Bluejays (4-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) taking on a perennial Big Ten power in Wisconsin. Creighton is led by Player of the Year candidate Doug McDermott (16.8 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and Venezuelan center Gregory Echenique (11.3 ppg, 7.8 rpg).

Orlando tournament
--West Virginia's first two games (1-1) were both so one-sided its hard to tell how good WV is; only one kid played more than 21:00 Thursday in an execution of Marist. Davidson has five starters back from 25-8 team, but lost at New Mexico, Milwaukee to start season; they're very well-coached and had only one guy play more than 26 minutes vs Vandy in first round. SoCon teams are 12-9 vs spread away from home.
-- Oklahoma has five starters back from 15-16 team; they had 12-point lead at half last nite, held on to beat UTEP by 7 despite 12-20 shooting on line, 6-18 on arc. Gonzaga has four starters back from 26-7 team, but struggling with young Clemson side last night, which was first time they were challenged in a game. Sooners had two kids play more than 28:00; Gonzaga had three kids play 31+ minutes in game that was a struggle. Clemson had 13 offensive boards, led Zags by a point at halftime.
Atlantis tournament
-- Missouri lost 4 starters from LY, but UConn transfer Oriakhi is stud inside; Tigers beat Stanford 78-70 despite its starting guards shooting a dismal 8-32 from floor- they had three guys play 30+ minutes. Duke has four starters back from 27-7 team, they dispatched good Minnesota club by 18, shooting 54% from floor, 8-10 from arc. Duke's bench played 44 minutes total, not very much. ACC favorites are 9-4 away from home.
-- Louisville is 4-0 with three wins by 26+ points, but they struggled vs Northern Iowa's slowish pace last night, shooting 5-22 from arc, with 20 turnovers, way too manyfor team with three starters back from 30-10 squad. VCU has four starters back from 29-7 team; they made 13-22 from arc in fairly easy 78-65 upset of Memphis (up 14 at half) in first round. Big East single digit road favorites are 4-6 vs spread. A-16 single digit road underdogs are 6-7.
Anaheim tournament
-- Pacific has five starters back from 11-19 team; they upset Xavier in first round, playing 10 guys double digit minutes, but no one more than 28- they had lost first two games vs D-I teams, by 5 to Fresno, 2 to Oral Roberts. St Mary's has four starters back from 27-6 team; 6 of their 7 rotation guys are juniors/seniors. St Mary's won last meeting 80-65 back in '10; they beat injury-riddled Drexel by 12, despite going 3-12 on arc. Dellavedova/Holt, Gaels' two main guys, both played 36+ minutes.
-- Georgia Tech has two freshmen starting on team that has all 5 starters back, so they've upgraded talent, but they don't shoot well (39% in win over Rice, 3-18 from arc). Cal Bears have three starters back from 24-10 team, are 4-0 after surviving couple of technicals last night, rallying back from 6 down with 9:23 left to nip Drake by 3. Cal's three best guys had 35+ minutes. Crabbe is one of best guards in west. ACC underdogs are 6-3 against spread so far this season.
Great Alaskan Shootout
-- Belmont won by 7 at Stanford in its way to Alaska, holding Cardinal to 31% for night, 2-19 from arc; they start couple juniors, three seniors, have veteran team heading into their first year in OVC. Northeastern has pair of one-point wins (BU/Princeton) already, but also lost at home to Vermont; Huskies were 8-16 from arc, outscored Riverside 16-3 on foul line in 61-52 win. CAA single digit underdogs are 7-4 against spread.
-- Oral Roberts has three starters back from 27-7 team; they survived 19 turnovers to beat LMU by 9 last nite. ORU played four of its guys 30+ minutes, with star Niles (33 points) playing all 40. Charlotte scored last 11 points over final 4:30, beating Texas State 73-64 (-7) last night; 49ers start two frosh/three sophs, but talent has been upgraded. A-16 favorites are 6-4 away from home. ORU beat Xavier of A-16 by 16 last season.
Other games
-- Michigan played Burke/Hardaway 38:00 each Tuesday, two others 33 minutes in tough 67-62 win (down 4 at half) over Pitt; Wolverines made only 3-17 from arc, but are still over 40% for season. Kansas State subs played 121 out of possible 200 minutes in 66-63 win over Delaware, as new coach Weber searches for combos that work. Beilein won last three meetings with Weber when Weber was coach at Illinois. Big Dozen teams are 7-4 vs spread when number is 5 or less. Big X teams are 4-3.
-- Cincinnati is 4-0, playing one team (#232) ranked in top 300; Cincy has three starters back from 26-11 team that beat Oklahoma/Texas from Big X last year. Iowa State has two starters back from 23-11 team that beat UConn of Big East in NCAAs; they also have Michigan St transfer Lucious eligible to play PG. Big East favorites are 6-7 away from; Big X underdogs are 2-2. Iowa State lost its top three scorers from LY.
-- UNLV dispatched pair of stiffs to open season; they've return three starters from LY's 26-9 team, but brought in talented freshmen to take their place, not JC kids, as Rice builds more solid program. Oregon lost three starters from 24-10 team; Ducks are 4-0, thrashing Vanderbilt by 26, but they're turning ball over 23% of time, a bit much. MWC faves are 4-7; 4-0 when laying 15+ points, 0-7 when laying less. Pac-12 dogs are 5-5, 0-2 when getting more than five points.
-- Arkansas scored 91.7 ppg in beating three stiffs to start season; now that Arizona State finally has PG Carson eligibile, curious to see how the Sendek system does vs 40:00 of Hell. Hogs forced turnovers on 29.5% of possessions so far, but ASU is juge step up in class from those stiffs. Sun Devils return other 4 starters from LY, when lack of quality PG had them reeling to 10-21 season- they scored 80 ppg in a 3-0 start.
-- Creighton is shooting an amazing 68% inside arc thru four games, 41% outside arc; they're an offensive dynamo, scoring 85 ppg in 4-0 start that includes 77-60 win over UAB. Wisconsin missed PG Gasser in 74-56 loss at Florida, only good club Badgers faced so far; Ryan has 3 starters back from 26-10 team. Big Dozen teams are 7-4 vs spread when line is 5 or less points. MVC teams are 6-0. This has makings of NCAA tourney game; interesting contrast in styles.
