Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are two streaking and two slumping starting pitchers set to take the hill Tuesday:

STREAKING

Matt Moore, Tampa Bay Rays (6-0, 2.14 ERA)

Moore has assumed the role of temporary ace of the Rays pitching staff while David Price fights through his early struggles. The crafty lefty has wins in six of his seven starts and will get the ball against the Red Sox Tuesday opposite John Lackey.

Patrick Corbin, Arizona Diamondbacks (5-0, 1.75 ERA)

Corbin hasn't given up more than two runs in any of his seven outings this year. The left-hander has wins in three consecutive starts and has only surrendered two homers in just over 46 innings pitched.

SLUMPING

Bartolo Colon, Oakland Athletics (3-2, 4.57 ERA)

Colon racked up three wins in his first four starts, but the righty has struggled over his last three outings. The 39-year-old hurler has been beat up for 14 earned runs over his last three outings and was hit hard by the Tribe for six earned last time out.

Kyle Lohse, Milwaukee Brewers (1-4, 3.53 ERA)

The Brewers had high expectations for Lohse when they signed him in the offseason to a three-year deal. The righty is just 1-4 on the season, but he hasn’t pitched that poorly as reflected in his 3.53 ERA. Milwaukee is providing Lohse with just two runs of support per game – the worst run support in the majors.

Preview: Padres (17-21) at Orioles (23-16)

Game: 2
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Date: May 15, 2013 12:35 PM EDT

Following a tough defeat on a rare blown save by his team's closer, Freddy Garcia has plenty of incentive to pick up his first victory with the Baltimore Orioles.

The veteran right-hander faces a San Diego Padres team that released him during spring training as he tries to help the Orioles bounce back and split this two-game set Wednesday at Camden Yards.

Baltimore (23-16) stood one out away from winning for the seventh time in nine games before Chris Denorfia and Everth Cabrera delivered RBI singles off closer Jim Johnson for a 3-2 win Tuesday.

Johnson entered with a franchise-record streak of 35 straight converted saves.

"I really didn't put a whole lot of stock into (the streak)," said Johnson, who hadn't blown a save opportunity since July 27 against Oakland. "It was just something you guys like to talk about."

Garcia (0-1, 4.26 ERA) will try to get the ball back to Johnson in his first shot at the Padres (17-21) since his release March 24 after posting an 8.71 ERA in 20 2-3 innings in Cactus League action. He wasn't out of work for long, signing with Baltimore five days later.

After getting called up from Triple-A Norfolk, Garcia carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before leaving without a decision in a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels on May 4.

He suffered his first loss Thursday, allowing four runs and five hits - two homers - over six innings in a 6-2 defeat to Kansas City.

"I was trying to do my best and tried to keep the guys in the game," Garcia said. "That's all I can do."

While he's 4-2 with a 2.51 ERA in nine starts against the Padres, Garcia hasn't faced them since 2005.

Perhaps San Diego might have been better served holding on to Garcia, considering its starters rank near the bottom of the NL with a 4.88 ERA.

They posted an 8.03 ERA while dropping the first three games of their five-game road trip before Andrew Cashner had a solid performance in Tuesday's win that snapped San Diego's 18-game skid when trailing after eight innings.

Scheduled starter Jason Marquis (4-2, 3.48) has found a groove lately, allowing five runs over 20 2-3 innings while winning three straight starts.

He yielded five hits over eight innings in a 1-0 win over Miami last Wednesday for his longest outing since Aug. 11.

"It's easier now that I've figured a few things out," Marquis said. "I have the life back on my ball, the north-south movement."

Marquis hasn't had much success against the Orioles, going 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in three starts. Adam Jones is 4 for 7 with a double versus Marquis but has hit .194 in his last 10 interleague games.

Nick Markakis is also 4 for 7 with a double in this matchup, though he went 0 for 4 on Tuesday to drop his average to .136 in his last six home games.

Since his 13-game hitting streak ended, Chase Headley is 1 for 13 with six strikeouts for the Padres.

San Diego has batted .185 with 57 strikeouts over its last five games.

Preview: Astros (10-30) at Tigers (22-15)

Game: 3
Venue: Comerica Park
Date: May 15, 2013 1:08 PM EDT

Max Scherzer is probably not the best pitcher for the Houston Astros to face as they try to avoid a season sweep to the Detroit Tigers.

Scherzer looks to help Detroit finish 7-0 against Houston while staying unbeaten himself Wednesday as he takes on an Astros team mired in its third six-game losing streak of the season.

Detroit has outscored Houston 50-12 in 2013, winning 6-2 on Tuesday night. The Tigers (22-15) have taken 11 of the past 13 meetings, including six straight at home dating to July 14, 2000.

The Astros (10-30) are batting .178 with nine extra-base hits in the six matchups this season and have to face Scherzer (5-0, 3.61 ERA) again after he limited them to one run and three hits over eight innings of a 17-2 victory in Houston on May 4.

The right-hander is among the major league leaders with 61 strikeouts and has walked nine in 47 1-3 innings. Houston has struck out a big league-high 400 times this season, including 66 in 208 at_bats against Detroit while walking nine times.

"We have spurts where we have good at_bats, but there are other times where we miss the pitch we need to hit, or when we are taking the pitches we need to attack," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "The key to making it in this league is figuring out the pitchers and how they are trying to get you out. You need to be able to adjust to the way they are attacking you, and we aren't there yet."

Scherzer went eight innings again Friday, allowing four runs and five hits in a 10-4 home win over Cleveland. He struck out seven without a walk.

"That's one of the best pitchers in the game, and we got four runs off him, so that's pretty good," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "He just pounds the strike zone and then he's got the wipe-out changeup, so you aren't going to get much off him without scratching and clawing. I wish we had gotten 10 off him, but that's not too likely."

Houston will probably have a hard time scoring off Scherzer given its struggles on the road. The Astros have dropped 13 of 14 away from home, twice managing more than four runs.

They'll also be without their best hitter after placing second baseman Jose Altuve on the bereavement list Tuesday following the death of his grandmother. Altuve, batting .333, is expected to be back with the team Saturday.

It will be up to Dallas Keuchel (0-1, 4.43) to keep the Tigers, who lead the majors with 201 runs, in check after facing them in relief May 2.

The left-hander entered that game in the 10th inning with the score tied at 3-all and went four scoreless innings before being charged with four runs in the 14th of a 7-3 loss.

Keuchel made his first start of the season Friday and didn't receive a decision after allowing two runs over six innings in a 4-2 loss to Texas.

Porter came away impressed by Keuchel, who went 3-8 with a 5.27 ERA in 16 starts last season.

"Dallas was tremendous," Porter said. "He did a great job of attacking the zone and throwing the sinker ball away. He pitched to both sides of the plate and got a lot of ground balls. He kept us right there for six innings."

Miguel Cabrera went 2 for 3 and hit his eighth home run Tuesday as Detroit sent Houston to its 16th loss in 19 games. Cabrera, who leads the majors with 41 RBIs, is batting .417 (10 for 24) with three homers and eight RBIs against the Astros this season.

Cole Hamels hopes the Phillies' recent good fortune on offense will extend his way.

Philadelphia tries to push its win streak to a season-high four games against a Cleveland Indians team trying to re-ignite its offense.

Hamels (1-5, 4.18 ERA) already has one fewer loss than all of last season, when he went 17-6. His strikeout-to-walk ratio - which has never been worse than 3.02 in a season - has dipped from 4.15 in 2012 to 1.95 in 2013.

The left-hander's control issues followed him into his last start, a 2-1 defeat to Arizona on Thursday in which he walked five and gave up six hits in six innings. Hamels took the loss as the Phillies (19-21) dropped to 1-7 when he takes the mound.

"I'm just not executing when I need to,' said Hamels, who has issued 22 walks in 51 2-3 innings. ``That's my biggest issue so far, the walks. For me it's just to be able to go out, execute pitches and stop the walks. I have to correct what I can correct and that's what's going to make me a better player.'

Hamels also has had some tough luck of late. He has given up two or fewer runs in each of his last four starts and surrendered just 11 in his last six outings after giving up 13 in his first two.

The Phillies have scored just 16 runs for him in his eight starts, but showed potential to provide more after Tuesday night's 6-2 win to open this two-game set. John Mayberry homered and went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for his first multihit game since April 19, and raised his average 24 points to .242.

The Phillies have tallied 10 or more hits in four of their last eight games and are 12-4 when reaching double figures.

"I think it's a matter of time and we can end up having a good offense,' Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel said.

Cleveland (21-17) has endured a bit of an offensive slump on its end. During a six-game win streak from April 28-May 4, the Indians hit .357 with 14 homers and scored 53 runs, and still have won seven of their last 11 despite batting .231 with 11 home runs.

``I don't know if I'd call it a valley,' manager Terry Francona said. ``We played a lot of baseball in a short amount of time. We were pretty hot. You can erupt any night or you can't score. I don't see it as a trend either way.'

Catcher Carlos Santana is 6 for 33 (.182) with two homers in his last 11 games, and first baseman Mark Reynolds is 5 for 29 (.172) with 12 strikeouts in his last 11.

The one constant for the Indians has been Michael Brantley, who accounted for Cleveland's offense Tuesday with a two-run single and has hit safely in five straight games. Brantley is hitting .361 over his last 10 games.

Corey Kluber (2-2, 5.64) could use more support like Brantley's. He was tagged for eight runs and 11 hits in 4 2-3 innings of Cleveland's 10-4 loss at Detroit on Friday. After a strong debut, the right-hander has a 9.58 ERA in his last two starts, surrendering 16 hits and six walks over 10 1-3 innings.

"I made too many mistakes with the cutter,' Kluber said of his latest start. ``I left one over the plate to (Miguel) Cabrera, and they got a couple more hits off that exact same pitch.'

Preview: White Sox (16-21) at Twins (18-18)

Game: 6
Venue: Target Field
Date: May 15, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

If the Chicago White Sox are to move out of last place in the AL Central, they'll need to string together some victories.

The visiting White Sox can start by winning two straight for the first time in almost two weeks Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.

Adam Dunn and Dayan Viciedo hit back-to-back homers in the second inning and Tyler Flowers delivered a tiebreaking double in the eighth to help back a strong outing from Jake Peavy in Chicago's 4-2 win over Minnesota (18-18) on Tuesday.

The White Sox (16-21), who are 4-6 since last winning two in row at Texas to open May, hope to get hot after Peavy and two relievers held the Twins to six hits one night after a 10-3 series-opening defeat.

Despite spending 45 minutes working on defense prior to the game, the White Sox committed an error in a sixth straight contest. However, their AL-worst 30th of the season did not prove costly in the end.

"It's a focal point," manager Robin Ventura said. "It's important and it's going to stay important. I don't know if we're going to come out here at 8:30 (am Wednesday), but I was thinking about it."

Dunn's homer was his fourth hit in 36 at_bats this month. He also struck out twice to raise his total to 18 in his last 11 contests.

Viciedo is batting .429 (6 for 14) with four RBIs in five games since missing three weeks with a strained left oblique.

Chicago hopes scheduled starter Dylan Axelrod (0-3, 4.17 ERA) can rebound after he allowed six runs in six innings of a 7-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday. The right-hander yielded eight runs in his previous four starts.

"The whole game, I felt really good," Axelrod said. "It's just an unfortunate thing that they got (four) runs in the third. That's the frustrating part, where you feel great out there and still give up some runs.

"I can't be that disappointed in my effort because I felt I executed pretty well and they just happened to score."

Axelrod will be making his first start against Minnesota after posting a 3.86 ERA without a decision in two appearances. He will try to cool off Minnesota stars Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau.

Mauer is batting .431 (22 for 51) during a 13-game hitting streak, and Morneau is batting .425 (17 for 40) while hitting safely in 10 straight.

Scheduled Minnesota starter Mike Pelfrey (3-3, 6.03) has completed six innings in each of his last two outings after failing to do so in any of the previous five. He's allowed four runs while going 1-0 in those two starts, giving up three runs in Friday's 9-6, 10-inning loss to Baltimore in which he took a 6-0 lead into the sixth.

"Maybe after my last start, I kind of got spoiled," said Pelfrey, who gave up season lows of one run and four hits while striking out a season-best seven in a 4-2 win at Cleveland on May 5. "Maybe I kind of expected to have that kind of stuff every time out. But it was far from it."

The right-hander has never faced the White Sox.

Preview: Rangers (25-14) at Athletics (20-21)

Game: 3
Venue: O.co Coliseum
Date: May 15, 2013 3:35 PM EDT

Adrian Beltre and Mitch Moreland are hitting the ball well of late.

That's precisely why the Texas Rangers are trying to win back-to-back road games against the Oakland Athletics for the first time in almost two years.

Beltre and Moreland attempt to continue their impressive production at the plate in the conclusion of this three-game series Wednesday.

Beltre is hitting .385 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 12 games, raising his season average 57 points to .271. He's been even better over the past six contests, going 12 for 27 with three homers and seven RBIs.

Moreland is also producing, compiling a .395 average with eight RBIs while hitting six of his nine homers over the last 11 games. All three of his hits in this series have left the park, while driving in four runs.

The first baseman homered twice Tuesday, and his solo shot in the 10th inning after Beltre provided his own proved to be the difference in a 6-5 win Tuesday night at Oakland (20-21) that ended a five-game losing streak there.

"They've had a good run against us here," said closer Joe Nathan, who got out of a bases-loaded jam to get the save Tuesday. "They're a tough ballclub and they know how to win games."

Texas (25-14) has dropped nine of the past 12 visits to O.co Coliseum since winning five straight there from Aug. 12-Sept. 21, 2011.

Beltre could prove vital again since he's hitting .447 over his last nine games against the A's, including four hits in this series.

Alexi Ogando (3-2, 3.09 ERA) may be looking for some redemption in his first appearance at Oakland since a relief appearance in a 12-5 loss in the regular-season finale Oct. 3. He gave up four runs while managing just one out in the eighth, as Texas completed its late-season collapse that handed the AL West title to the A's.

The right-hander is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in his past five road starts and struggled with his command while not getting a decision in Friday's 4-2 win at Houston. He gave up two runs in 5 2-3 innings, but one scored on one of his two wild pitches while he matched his career high with four walks.

His only career start against the A's came at home on Sept. 10, 2011, allowing five runs - three earned - and hitting a batter in five innings of an 8-7 loss.

Oakland has rotated wins and losses over the past four games, but may get a lift if Coco Crisp is back in the lineup after a strained left hamstring landed him on the disabled list May 1.

The center fielder is expected to be activated, and he's 6 for 19 with four extra-base hits while adding seven RBIs and four steals over his last five games versus Texas.

Daniel Straily (1-1, 7.06) is expected to start after being tagged for six runs while issuing four walks in five innings of a 6-3 loss at Seattle on Friday.

The rookie right-hander is 0-1 with an 8.84 ERA while serving up 10 homers over his last four home starts.

He allowed one earned run with eight strikeouts in 6 2-3 innings while not getting a decision in a 5-4 road loss in his only meeting with the Rangers on Sept. 24.

Josh Donaldson is 8 for 17 over his past four games with Texas, but he's 0 for 4 versus Ogando.

Preview: Braves (22-17) at Diamondbacks (22-18)

Game: 3
Venue: Chase Field
Date: May 15, 2013 3:40 PM EDT

It's a safe bet the last person the struggling Arizona Diamondbacks' offense wants to see right now is Tim Hudson, who has dominated the club throughout his career.

Aside from the series opener, the Atlanta Braves have had a tough time scoring runs recently as well.

Hudson looks to remain unbeaten versus Arizona as the visiting Braves hope to avoid a fifth defeat in six games Wednesday night.

Atlanta (22-17) began the season 12-1, but it has since gone 10-16, with a lack of offense contributing to its most recent slide. It was shut out for the sixth time - tied with Miami for the most in the majors - and mustered only four hits in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat.t

The Braves appeared to bust out of their slump as former Diamondback Justin Upton homered in Monday's 10-1 victory, though they reverted back to their light-hitting ways and scored fewer than three runs for the fourth time in five games.

Andrelton Simmons' eighth-inning single snapped a 0-for-21 slump Tuesday, but Atlanta was shut out in Arizona for the first time since May 20, 2006.

``I thought our hitters ... hit some balls hard,' manager Fredi Gonzalez said. ``That is all you can do, really. We had people on base almost every inning. That's the nature of the game sometimes.'

Atlanta may not need many runs with Hudson (4-2, 4.70 ERA) facing Arizona. The right-hander has won his last five starts versus the Diamondbacks while posting a 0.47 ERA, going at least seven innings in each outing and allowing two runs in 38 innings in that stretch.

Hudson, 7-0 with a 1.33 ERA in nine career outings against Arizona, is coming off a rough outing, though, giving up six runs - all in two-thirds of his fourth and final inning - in Friday's 8-2 loss to San Francisco. He had allowed four runs in 14 1-3 innings while winning his previous two starts.

"It's one of those things, like what else can you do?" Hudson said. "I felt like I made some pitches to get out of the inning. They just had some breaks go their way and it just happened to be all in a row."

He seemingly has a prime opportunity to get back on track facing the Diamondbacks, who ended a three-game skid despite scoring fewer than three runs for the fourth straight game.

Arizona (22-18) - the only team yet to be shut out in 2013 - has gone just 2 for 23 with runners in scoring position in that stretch, with Tuesday's offense coming on a third-inning two-run single from Didi Gregorius, who has hit safely in 14 of his 17 games this season for a .354 average.

The Diamondbacks will look to provide some support for Ian Kennedy, who hasn't won since beating St. Louis on opening day April 1.

Kennedy (1-3, 4.83) pitched better his last time out after posting a 5.70 ERA over his previous six starts, giving up two runs in seven innings of Arizona's 3-2 win over Philadelphia on Friday.

``It was his best outing of the season, especially those last two innings,' manager Kirk Gibson said.

The right-hander has been solid versus the Braves, going 1-0 with a 2.66 ERA while pitching at least into the seventh in each of his three career starts against them.

Atlanta has won nine of the last 12 meetings, outscoring Arizona 65-25 in that stretch.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds to win the US Open in Pennsylvania next month..........

7-2-- Eldrick Woods-- Seems to be in controversy every week now.

12-1-- Rory McIlroy-- Not as sharp right now as in past couple years.

20-1-- Lee Westwood-- Best golfer never to win a major????

30-1-- Sergio Garcia-- Curious to see how he reacts to TPC meltdown.

40-1-- Jim Furyk-- Pennsylvania site should help this veteran.

60-1-- Thorbjorn Olesen-- Must be pretty good; is same odds as Poulter, Watney, and I've never heard of him.

*****

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

13) If you want to bet next February's Super Bowl, the AFC is favored by a point, with a total of 51. Yes, you can bet on it today, if you like.

12) Carmelo Anthony was 9-23, JR Smith 9-22 in Knicks' dreadful 93-82 loss to Indiana; Smith's recent play doesn't justify his taking 22 shots, many of which were wide-open, quality shots that he just didn't make.

11) San Antonio held Curry/Thompson to 6-22 from the floor in Spurs' easy 109-91 win in Game 5 of that series; Mark Jackson is a young coach, at some point, he may regret calling his guards "....the best shooting backcourt ever." It seemed to motivate the Spurs.

10) Home teams won both Game 1's in NHL's second round, as Penguins, Kings posted wins Tuesday night. LA handed the Sharks their first loss this postseason with a 2-0 decision at Staples Center.

9) Pretty cool video of Michigan football coach Brady Hoke poking fun at Notre Dame for ending their rivalry with the Wolverines. We don't get to see that side of coaches very often.

8) Speaking of which, college football magazines will be out in 2-3 weeks and then we'll start getting down to serious work. I'm back from my vacation tonight and its time to pick up the pace of our research.

7) Miguel Cabrera is hitting .375, with 41 RBI in 37 games. Ike Davis is he Mets' cleanup hitter most days; he's hitting .169 with nine RBI. Mets have also used six different leadoff hitters in their first 36 games.

6) A's had runners on 1st and 2nd and one out in close game Tuesday; while the Texas pitching coach visited the mound, Oakland pinch-ran for both baserunners at same time, in effect making a double switch in the lineup. Pretty sure I've never seen that before. Interesting strategy.

5) Barry Zito has allowed 23 runs in 12 IP in three road starts; he's allowed two runs in 33 IP in five home starts. Go figure.

4) Buffalo Bills' GM Buddy Nix quits now? Why? There's more to this than meets the eye. Not good for the Bills at all- Buffalo was 16-32 in his tenure, but you'd think they'd switch GMs before the draft.

3) Hard to believe the Jets would just cut Mark Sanchez, but this is a strange world, and weirder things than that have happened.

2) #1 high school basketball recruit Andrew Wiggins declared for the Kansas Jayhawks, which caused the Jayhawks to drop from 25-1 to 10-1 to win the national title in Dallas next April.

1) You sit in an airport terminal waiting to fly home, some nitwit makes 10-12 calls on his cellphone and by the time I get on the plane, I know more about his life than I do about most of my relatives. Its all a little strange.....lol

Three hot over pitchers on the mound Wednesday
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday features some pitchers that are coming off of a string of games with big scorelines. Among them are hot over bets such as David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays and Mike Leake of the Cincinnati Reds that we've covered before. But we'll have a look at three other pitchers that have had a rough go of things recently and have been responsible for some high scorelines.

Tim Hudson, Atlanta Braves (4-2, 4.70 ERA)

Hudson is coming off his worst start of the season lasting just 3 2/3 innings and giving up six earned runs in an 8-2 loss versus the San Francisco Giants. Hudson's last four starts have gone over the total and his ERA is starting to balloon up around the 5.00 range. The Braves keep his games competitive as they provide him with 4.88 runs per start, but with opponents batting .300 against him, Hudson might require a little bit more run support.

Hudson gets the start against the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday. He was 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in one start versus Arizona in 2012.

Wandy Rodriguez, Pittsburgh Pirates (3-2, 3.62 ERA)

Rodriguez began the season with three starts going under the total courtesy of a 0.56 ERA in those starts. His last four have gone over the total and his ERA is inching closer to 4.00 due to his 5.90 ERA since the bright start to the campaign. Rodriguez is also giving up more home runs as hitters have knocked seven dingers in his last four starts.

The Pirates face the Milwaukee Brewers Wednesday. Rodriguez had his worst start of the season against the Brew Crew on April 29. He gave up seven earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of work en route to the 10-4 loss.

Shaun Marcum, New York Mets (0-3, 8.59 ERA)

The Mets righty has gotten off to a slow start this year in just four starts. He has just 14 2/3 innings pitched combined in those starts and has given up 14 earned runs. The Mets have played over the total in three of his four starts thus far this season. Marcum will be nursing an injury to his non-pitching hand as they head into action Wednesday.

Marcum and the Mets will face the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium Wednesday. He had one start versus the Cards in 2012 lasting five innings and giving up four earned runs as a member of the Brewers.

MLB Top 6: Best and worst interleague bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new interleague structure in the major leagues, a season-long format as opposed to sporadic pockets throughout the season, has seen all but six big league clubs face a team from the opposite league.

Only the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland A's, Houston Astros, St, Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants have yet to partake in interleague games, though the Giants and Jays open a series Tuesday. Still, we have a large enough sample size to delve into the numbers and see which teams have gotten off to a strong start and which clubs have struggled in the early stages of interleague matchups.

Best interleague bets

Washington Nationals (5-0 IL)

The Nationals have taken a three-game series versus the Chicago White Sox and a mini two-game series over the Detroit Tigers this season to have a clean 5-0 record in interleague play. The Nationals seem to do their best scoring against American League teams. In the five interleague games, they have outscored opponents 28-18. The Nats are 13th in the National League with 137 runs on the year. That total gives them an average of 3.6 per game. In interleague play, they average a vastly improved 5.6 runs per game.

Washington's next interleague matchup will be a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles May 27.

Tampa Bay Rays (5-1 IL)

A three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres has the Rays riding a wave of momentum and has improved their interleague record to 5-1. They took two of three from the Colorado Rockies earlier in the month to get the ball rolling in their interleague schedule. Tampa Bay is crushing the ball, having played over the total in 14 of its last 15 games overall. Five of those have been versus NL opponents. The Rays have battered NL pitching, outscoring teams from the senior circuit by a score of 36-28 in their six matchups.

The Rays will face the Miami Marlins in a battle for Florida bragging rights on May 27.

New York Mets (3-1 IL)

The Mets have gotten off to a great start posting three wins in four games in interleague matchups. It helps to have one of the best pitchers in the game pitching in two of those victories. Matt Harvey started and won both of his interleague starts. He tossed a 1-0 shutout versus the White Sox on May 7 and went eight innings in a 4-2 victory against the Minnesota Twins on April 13. It's just unfortunate the Mets can't play the AL all the time. They have gone just 11-20 versus the National League.

The Mets will play a four-game subway series versus the Yankees on May 27.

Worst

Philadelphia Philles (1-4 IL)

In 2012, Philly posted a porous record of 5-10 against AL foes. This season, it's just as bad. The Phillies have surrendered a total of 45 runs in their five games and have managed to score just 18 themselves. The Phils have had trouble across the board this season, but their games versus the AL have amplified their shortcomings.

The Philles will get another crack at the AL with a mini two-game set versus the Cleveland Indians Tuesday. They have lost both their games versus the Tribe this season by a combined score of 20-2.

Chicago White Sox (1-4 IL)

On the year, the White Sox have posted some great pitching numbers, coupled with some poor hitting statistics. In interleague play, the ChiSox are an improved offensive club with pitching woes, save for a 1-0 loss against Harvey and the Mets on May 7. Chicago ranks 28th in the majors with a .229 batting average, but that number is improved to .260 against NL clubs. Its reliable 3.51 ERA balloons up to 4.68 against the NL.

The Pale Hose will get another crack against the NL as they host the Marlins on May 24.

Atlanta Braves (1-4 IL)

The NL East-leading Braves just can't get it done versus the AL. In 2012, they posted a subpar 8-10 record in interleague games. The Braves have the best inter-division record in MLB, having gone 11-4 against NL East rivals, but have posted an alarming 1-4 record in interleague matchups. This could be crucial considering the Nationals have had success versus the AL. The Braves were swept by Detroit in late April and were outscored 25-7 in the three games.

The Braves will try to right the ship in their next interleague matchup as they face the Minnesota Twins on May 20.
