Lakers at Warriors: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Golden State Warriors (-1.5, 207)

The Los Angeles Lakers did not fare so well when they attempted to work Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol back into the rotation on Friday. With two more days of practice under their belts, the Lakers will try to have a better showing when they visit the surging Golden State Warriors on Monday. The Warriors are one of the teams the Lakers are trying to track down in the Western Conference, though holding off the Utah Jazz is of greater importance.

Gasol returned from a 20-game absence on Friday but struggled to get back into a rhythm in 20 minutes while his teammates let a late lead slip away against the lowly Washington Wizards. Golden State got to face that same Wizards team on Saturday and won with ease as Stephen Curry stayed hot from beyond the arc and David Lee recorded his customary double-double. The Lakers are 2 1/2 games behind Golden State, with the Houston Rockets sitting in between the two. The No. 6 spot means avoiding San Antonio and Oklahoma City in the first round of the playoffs, though the rest of the teams at the top could be just as tough.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TWSN (Los Angeles), CSBA (Golden State), NBATV

ABOUT THE LAKERS (36-34): Los Angeles has dropped back-to-back games to two of the worst teams in the league and drew harsh criticism after Friday’s loss from coach Mike D’Antoni, who said, “I can’t explain it, but every time we get up by 16, it’s like ‘Well we’re good and we don’t have to play hard,’ and we start messing with the game…(when) you start messing with the basketball gods, they will get you. If we don’t change that, we obviously won’t make the playoffs.” Bryant, who had missed the previous two games with a sprained ankle and the flu, came up short on a tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer and echoed his coach. “It’s a disturbing loss, and we’re upset about it,” Bryant said. “Our defensive intensity slipped a great deal in the second half, and they took advantage of it.” The Lakers are kicking off a four-game road trip at Golden State.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (40-31): Golden State is clinging to a half-game lead over the Rockets for the No. 6 spot but appears to have dodged a bullet when Curry downplayed a right ankle sprain that forced him out in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 101-92 win over Washington. The star guard has dealt with ankle problems for the last few years but told reporters, “I’m fine,” and had the X-rays come back negative. Curry has been on fire lately, going 21-of-38 from 3-point range in the last four games and averaging 29.5 points in that span. The Warriors have won three of their last four with Curry handling the scoring load and Andrew Bogut, Harrison Barnes and even Lee forming a strong defensive front line. Lee, who has always been known more as an offensive force, has posted four straight double-doubles.

TRENDS:

* Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a loss.
* Warriors are 6-0 ATS in their last six Monday games.
* Over is 5-0 in Lakers’ last five games following a loss.
* Under is 7-0 in Warriors’ last seven vs. Western Conference foes.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Lakers F Antawn Jamison suffered a torn ligament in his right wrist on Friday but is expected to play on Monday.

2. Los Angeles has taken six straight in the series, including a 118-115 overtime victory at Golden State on Dec. 22. Bryant scored 34 points in the win.

3. Curry has struggled to 19 points on 35.9 percent shooting in the two meetings with Los Angeles this season.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of March 17-23.

Hottest ATS

New York Knicks (4-1 SU, 5-0 ATS)

The Knicks have been ravaged with injuries but still reeled off five consecutive covers this past week. New York was a rare underdog three times during the streak and clinched a playoff berth in the process. The Knicks visit the Boston Celtics Tuesday before enjoying a three-game homestand at Madison Square Garden.

Coldest ATS

Toronto Raptors (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

The Raptors fell twice to the Knicks and also blew covers against the Heat and Bobcats last week. To make matters worse, Rudy Gay left Friday’s loss to New York with a back problem. He will have some time to heal before Atlanta rolls into the Air Canada Centre on Wednesday.

Best over play

Brooklyn Nets (2-2 SU, 4-0 over/under)

The Nets have played over the number in six straight games. Brooklyn has been putting up big numbers (104 ppg) during the over streak and has five games remaining on its current eight-game road trip. The Nets are in Phoenix Sunday and get a few days off before visiting Portland on Wednesday.

Best under play

Houston Rockets (2-1 SU, 0-3 over/under)

The Rockets have gone low in five straight games and seven of their last eight. Houston averages a league-best 106.5 points per game but its defense has stepped up and held opponents to an average of 92 points during the under run – more than 10 points lower than its season average (102.8). The Rockets host the Spurs Sunday and then the Pacers roll into town on Wednesday.

Scouting the schedule:

-The Philadelphia 76ers have dropped 15 consecutive road games heading into Sunday’s clash at Sacramento. The Sixers will be road warriors down the stretch, playing 10 of their final 14 games away from Wells Fargo Center. Philadelphia has a tendency to play under (8-20-3 O/U) on the road this season.

-The Golden State Warriors will battle for playoff positioning down the stretch, playing the majority of their games in front of their home crowd. The Warriors play seven of their next eight at Oracle Arena, where they have a 23-10 (18-15 ATS) straight-up record.

Knicks at Celtics: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Boston Celtics (-3, 190)

Just over a week ago the Boston Celtics were likely entertaining thoughts of surpassing the New York Knicks atop the Atlantic Division. How things have changed. The Celtics have lost four straight while the once-struggling Knicks have won four in a row, taking some of the drama from their meeting Tuesday night at TD Garden. Further sapping the intrigue is the fact that Boston will be without All-Star forward Kevin Garnett as he battles a left ankle injury.

While Boston has its share of injury concerns, New York's relative return to health has reversed its fortunes and helped solidify the club's hold on the division lead. Carmelo Anthony has averaged 28.7 points in three games since returning from a knee ailment and fellow All-Star Tyson Chandler may return from a neck injury when the team gets to Boston, if not soon thereafter. Chandler has missed six straight games, including the Knicks' 110-84 rout of Toronto at home on Saturday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE KNICKS (42-26): New York coach Mike Woodson has already said that forward Kenyon Martin will return to the bench once Chandler returns, but that is not an indictment of Martin's play. The veteran had 18 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks in the win over Toronto and is shooting 77.8 percent (21-for-27) over his last three games. Martin wasn't with the Knicks when they won in Boston on Jan. 24, snapping an 11-game losing streak at TD Garden. New York enters with a two-game lead in the division over Brooklyn and a 6 1/2-game advantage on Boston.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (36-33): While Boston has hit the skids, three of its four losses came on the road, the home game was against the unbeatable Miami Heat and all four came by an average of only 4.3 points. In addition, it showed it can put up a fight when shorthanded. Playing without Garnett and Courtney Lee, who was also out with an ankle injury, the Celtics pushed Memphis to the finish line Saturday before falling 110-106. Jordan Crawford scored 21 of the bench's 44 points. "They were great," coach Doc Rivers said of his reserves. "We basically told them to go in and try to cause havoc, and they did that."

TRENDS:

* Knicks are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.
* Celtics are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 home games.
* Over is 4-0 in Celtics’ last four home games.
* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Boston.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Lee, who has made six of his last eight 3-pointers, is expected to return.

2. Streaky Knicks swingman J.R. Smith shot 3-for-16 in the previous meeting. He shoots 37.8 percent on the road, compared with 43.2 percent at home.

3. The rivals meet for the fourth and final time on Easter Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

Heat at Spurs: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at San Antonio Spurs (-1.5, 198.5)

The top two teams in the NBA meet up Sunday when the Miami Heat visit the San Antonio Spurs. The contest is huge in terms of the battle for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. Miami currently has a two-game edge over San Antonio and would hold a commanding lead if it completes a sweep of the season series. The Heat have won 28 of their past 29 games while San Antonio has won six of its last seven.

The contest could be a prelude to June’s NBA Finals as both squads are the class of their respective conferences. San Antonio holds a 2 1/2-game edge over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference and has a 32-4 home mark. Miami recently had a 27-game winning streak halted and has won 14 of its last 15 road games. The Heat bounced back from a loss to the Chicago Bulls by downing the New Orleans Hornets on Friday. The Spurs downed the Clippers on Friday behind Tim Duncan’s decisive three-point play with 2.2 seconds remaining. Miami won the first meeting 105-100 on Nov. 29 when Spurs coach Gregg Popovich sent Duncan, and guards Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green back to San Antonio for rest.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sun Sports (Miami), Fox Sports Southwest (San Antonio), NBATV

ABOUT THE HEAT (57-15): Forward LeBron James put his outside shooting on display in the victory over New Orleans, knocking down seven 3-pointers – one shy of his career high. James made six consecutive 3-pointers in the first half and finished 7-of-10 from behind the arc while scoring 36 points. “I hadn’t done that probably since high school or the early years with Cleveland,” James said afterward. “I felt good. Just tried to keep the Heat wave going.” Miami shot a season-high 60.9 percent in the contest and was 14-of-27 from 3-point range.

ABOUT THE SPURS (55-17): Duncan scored a season-best 34 points against the Clippers and continues to play like someone much younger. The 36-year-old Duncan also grabbed 11 rebounds against the Clippers for his 31st double-double of the season and is averaging 17.6 points and 10 rebounds. “He’s done the work to put himself in the position to have games like this and to have the season that’s he had,” Popovich said afterward. “You couldn’t be more proud of the guy on what he did out there.” Point guard Tony Parker had 24 points against the Clippers and is averaging 21.8 points in four games since returning from an ankle injury.

TRENDS:

* Spurs are 1-5 ATS in their last six home games.
* Over is 8-1 in Heat’s last nine vs. Western Conference foes.
* Heat are 4-0 ATS in their last four Sunday games.
* Spurs are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Heat is 2-22 when playing in San Antonio.

2. Ginobili injured his hamstring against the Clippers and will miss the Miami contest.

3. Miami PG Mario Chalmers (ankle) sat out the New Orleans game and is questionable to play against the Spurs.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of March 24-30

Hottest ATS

Utah Jazz (4-1 SU, 5-0 ATS)

Utah has ripped off eight consecutive covers (4-4 SU) for bettors heading into Monday’s home game with Portland. The Jazz are in a dogfight with the Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with only eight games to play.

Coldest ATS

Portland Trail Blazers (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

Portland’s postseason aspirations took a huge hit with four consecutive losses this past week. The Blazers were blown out by the Thunder, Nets, Jazz and Warriors and now face a must-win situation in Utah on Monday night.

Best over play

Chicago Bulls (2-1 SU, 3-0 over/under)

Chicago has been a good under play (32-38-1 O/U) all season long, but the Bulls have topped the total in three straight. The Bulls are averaging 101 points over the run – eight points higher than their season average (93 ppg). Chicago hosts the lowly Pistons Sunday before hitting the road for games in Washington and Brooklyn.

Best under play

Denver Nuggets (1-2 SU, 0-3 over/under)

Bettors have been cashing in on Denver’s ability to soar over totals all season long, but have taken a huge hit to the wallet over its past five games. The Nuggets faced an average total of 206.5 over a five-game under run, including a huge 221.5 total against the Kings on Mar. 23. Denver has a few days off before it visits Utah on Wednesday.

Scouting the schedule:

-The Philadelphia 76ers will play seven of their last nine games away from the Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers have a 10-21-3 O/U record away from home.

-The Oklahoma City Thunder enter a brutal portion of their schedule next week. The Thunder will play five consecutive quality opponents, who have a combined 227-138 SU record this season. Oklahoma City kicks off the stretch of toughies Thursday when it hosts San Antonio.
