Gold Cup

The 2017 Gold Cup is a summer tournament consisting of 12 CONCACAF teams, starting on July 7th and concluding on July 26th. The Gold Cup is every two years and will be hosted by the United States in 2017. The 12 teams are split into three groups– the top two teams from every group advance to the next round, as well as the two best third-place squads. Basically 8 of the 12 teams will advance from their group into the knockout stage. Here are the three groups for this year’s Gold Cup:

Group A: Costa Rica, Honduras, French Guiana, Canada
Group B: United States, Panama, Nicaragua, Martinique
Group C: Mexico, El Salvador, Jamaica, Curacao

Despite having home-field advantage, USA (+160) are listed behind Mexico (+130) to win the entire tournament.

Really looking forward to this tourney and hopeful for a good U.S. showing. Some big names being left out at least for group stage, should be able to coast through any way.

July 7th
Costa Rica +115

It is a CONCACAF tournament that USA and Mexico will be bringing their "B" teams, to look at young guys. I have been to it a couple times in the past. A fun tournament. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

i still know very little about soccer, i use the simple tools and to this day i owe bawlmer, BIG TIME for getting me in on this VERY profitable sport. Now it's only opened up the stellar job done with this sport, not only from bawlmer, but, GUSH, Houston Fan, idativan, KKloss, and eagleseye13, they ALL do an outstanding job. I would give it a try, GUSH has found the secret of the parlay payout with soccer. The DRAW is a nice payout, where else can you go 1-3 and at worst be down $40-$50 could you imagine going 1-3 with MLB favs at 130 a pop you would be down $290. There is a reason this sport has gained popularity with people wagering on it, there are no systems to use, very little trends, i suggest wetting the peak in the Gold Cup, you will not be sorry

What's at stake

Held every other summer, the CONCACAF Gold Cup crowns the champion of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. It's one of six such regional tournaments held around the world (Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and South America).

Held since 1991, every Gold Cup plays a role in determining CONCACAF's representative at the quadrennial FIFA Confederations Cup. Unless the same country wins both tournaments, the winner of the 2017 Gold Cup will play the winner of the 2019 Gold Cup in a one-game playoff to determine who heads to the Confederations Cup in Qatar in 2021.

The competition has been held a total of 13 times, and has been won by three different countries. Mexico lead the way with seven titles, the US have won it five times, while Canada have claimed the tournament once.

How it works

The Gold Cup field is made up of 12 teams divided into three groups of four. Each team plays the other three nations in their group during the Group Stage. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-place teams, advance to the single-elimination quarterfinals (July 19-20), followed by the semis (July 22-23) and the tournament final (July 26).
Favorites & Underdogs

As the history of the tournament indicates, the US and Mexico continue to be the perennial favorites in the Gold Cup. But there are a host of former World Cup finalists in the CONCACAF region that have designs on pulling off the upset: Costa Rica, Jamaica, Honduras and Canada. And 2015 Gold Cup third-place finishers Panama will also mount a stiff challenge.

Little is expected from Central American underdogs El Salvador and Nicaragua, as well as Caribbean minnows Curacao, French Guiana and Martinique.

USA Outlook

Bruce Arena blended experience, youth and fresh faces in his final 23-man Gold Cup roster, calling in old hands Brad Guzan, Graham Zusi, Matt Besler and Alejandro Bedoya alongside the uncapped Cristian Roldan, Dom Dwyer, Kelyn Rowe and Kenny Saied.

The new players drew many of the headlines when the US roster was announced, but it'll likely be the older hands – along with ascending USMNT regulars Kellyn Acosta, Dax McCarty, Matt Hedges, Jordan Morris and Jorge Villafana – that determine whether or not the US will improve on their massively-disappointing fourth-place finish in 2015 and lift the Gold Cup for the first time since 2013.

Canada Outlook

Canada have had a rough go of it in the Gold Cup and haven't advanced out of the group stage since 2009. Their hopes for this tournament took a hit with the news that star forward Cyle Larin won't be on the roster for this summer's competition, but Canada do have more talent in their pool than in recent years.

They'll have a dogfight on their hands to finish in the top two of Group A alongside one of Costa Rica, longtime nemesis Honduras and French Guiana, but – with the top-two third-place finishers advancing to the quarters – Canada have a great shot at making the quarterfinals.

The Gold Cup has been dominated by Mexico and USA historically– Mexico won in 2015 and have won 3 of the last 4 tournaments. USA won back in 2013 and also won consecutive Gold Cups in 2005 and 2007. Canada is the only other CONCACAF nation to win a Gold Cup, back in 2000.

The Gold Cup provides a chance to get younger players some experience, and Mexico’s squad will be very different from the one they took to the Confederations Cup in Russia. USA won’t have their full squad either, but most of their players come from the MLS which is in mid-season. USA also have home-field advantage which should be hugely beneficial on a game-to-game basis.

A worthy bet to make before the tournament is Costa Rica +725 (current odds at 5Dimes). They made a nice run in the 2014 World Cup and have an in-tact squad with a nice mix of players from the MLS and overseas. They’re clearly the third-best squad and if they can simply reach a final, +725 is a great price to be able to hedge down the line.
