Saves are the story as Andersen shuts out Panthers
The Leafs’ Frederik Andersen saved all of the Panthers’ 40 shots on goal in a 1-0 shutout win. That was his second shutout with 40 or more saves this season, also having done so on November 16 versus the Devils (42 saves in a 1-0 overtime win). Andersen is the first Maple Leafs goaltender with two 40-save shutouts in one season since the NHL began compiling official shot on goal totals in 1955-56.
Since 1955-56, the only other goalie with two 1-0 shutouts with 40 or more saves in a single season was Craig Anderson for the Panthers in the 2007-08 season. Anderson did so in consecutive games, on March 2 and 4, 2008.
Van Riemsdyk with his fourth 25-goal season with the Leafs
James van Riemsdyk scored the lone goal, his 25th of the season, in the Leafs’ victory over the Panthers on Tuesday. Van Riemsdyk has four seasons with at least 25 goals since joining the Maple Leafs prior to the 2012-13 campaign. Over the last 25 years, only two other Leafs have had that many 25-goal seasons: Mats Sundin (with 12) and Phil Kessel (five).
Voracek saves the day
Jakub Voracek was the hero for the Flyers in their victory over the Canadiens on Tuesday night, tying the game with 1:25 remaining in the third period and then winning the game at the 1:26 mark of overtime. The last player to tie a game within the last two minutes of the third period and then go on to net the OT winner as well was the Jets’ Patrik Laine on October 19, 2016 versus the Leafs. After trailing 4-0 in the second period, Winnipeg scored five unanswered goals, with Laine netting three of those. Laine scored one minute into the third period to pull the Jets within two goals, tied the game with 55 seconds remaining in that period, and then capped the comeback with an OT goal.
Voracek is the second Flyers player to score the game-tying goal in the last two minutes of the third and then score the game-winning goal in overtime, joining Joni Pitkanen on November 8, 2005 against the Bruins.
Phaneuf makes an early impact with Kings
Dion Phaneuf gave the Kings a 2-1 lead with a power play goal late in the second period of an eventual 4-3 win over the Jets. Since the trade that brought Phaneuf to the Kings last week, he has scored three goals in four games (he had three goals in 53 games with the Senators this season). Over the last 10 years, only one other defenseman had at least three goals over his first four games with a team. That was the Devils’ Damon Severson in October 2014, scoring three goals over his first four games in the NHL.
The last Kings player (at any position) to score at least three goals over his first four games with the team was Ryan Smyth in October 2009 (four goals).
Josi hits 200-assist mark
Roman Josi assisted on each of the first two Predators’ goals in their 3-2 victory over the Red Wings. Those were his 200th and 201st assists in the NHL, all coming with Nashville. Only three other Preds defensemen had at least 200 assists with the team: Shea Weber (277), Kimmo Timonen (222), and Ryan Suter (200).
Over the last three seasons (since 2015-16), Roman Josi has 24 games with at least two assists. The only defensemen with more game of this type over that span are Erik Karlsson (36 such games), Brent Burns (27), and Victor Hedman (25).
Blue Jackets win despite putting just six shots on net in the final two periods
Scott Harrington’s goal at the 13:10 mark of the second period proved to be the game winner in the Blue Jackets’ 2-1 win over the Devils on Tuesday night. Harrington’s goal was one of six total shots on goal for Columbus over the second and third periods (two shots on goal in the second and four in the third). The only other team with six-or-fewer shots on goal over the second and third periods of a game this season was the Rangers on October 21 against the Predators (Strangely enough, New York also won despite six shots on goal over those two periods).
An unlikely comeback
The Bruins trailed the Oilers, 2-0, entering the third period and went on to score three unanswered goals, with David Krejci netting the game winner with just over one minute remaining in the third period. Entering Tuesday, Boston was winless in each of its last 43 games when trailing by at least two goals after two periods, which was the second longest active streak of this type. The Canadiens have lost their last 57 games in these situations.
Vasilevskiy wins another one
Andrei Vasilevskiy made 35 saves on 37 shots on goal to earn his 35th win in his 50th game of the season, a 4-2 Lightning victory over the Capitals. Since the 2005-06 season (the first season in which the shootout was implemented), Vasilevskiy is the seventh goaltender with at least 35 wins over his first 50 games of a season. He joins Manny Legace (2005-06 Red Wings, 36 wins), Dominik Hasek (2006-07 Red Wings, 35 wins), Carey Price (2014-15 Canadiens, 36 wins), Pekka Rinne (2014-15 Predators, 35 wins), Braden Holtby (2015-16 Capitals, 39 wins), and Devan Dubnyk (2016-17 Wild, 35 wins).
Boedker with a goal in four consecutive games
Mikkel Boedker scored the Sharks’ third goal of the game on Tuesday, which proved to be the game winner, in their 3-2 win against the Blues. Boedker has scored at least one goal in each of his last four games, tying the longest such streak in his NHL career (four straight in January 2015). The only other Sharks player to score a goal in four consecutive games over the last two seasons was Joe Thornton (four straight games last month).
The scoring comes from many in second period
Seven different players scored a goal in the second period (four Canucks, three for the Avalanche) of Colorado’s OT win on Tuesday. That marked the fourth time this season in which at least seven different players scored a goal in one period. There were three prior instances of exactly seven, with each coming in the third period: St. Louis at Calgary on November 13, Edmonton at St. Louis on November 21, and Detroit at the Islanders on February 9.
