Hall extends personal scoring streak to 20 games

Devils forward Taylor Hall extended his personal point streak to 20 games when he scored the first goal in New Jersey’s game against the Wild. (Hall’s streak isn’t considered an official 20-game streak by the NHL because he did not play in the Devils’ game versus Nashville on January 25.) Over the last 20 years only four other NHL players tallied at least one point in 20 or more consecutive games they played within one season: Dany Heatley (with Ottawa) in 2005–06 (22 games), Paul Stastny (for Colorado) in 2006–07 (20 games), Sidney Crosby in 2010–11 (25 games) and Patrick Kane in 2015–16 (26 games).

McDavid scores game-winner

Connor McDavid’s overtime goal enabled the Oilers to post a 3–2 victory against the Avalanche in Edmonton on Thursday. It was McDavid’s fifth game-winning goal this season and his second overtime goal of the 2017–18 campaign. McDavid has scored at least five game-winning goals for the Oilers in each of his three seasons in the NHL. (He had five in 2015–16 and six last season.) He’s the fifth player in the Oilers’ NHL franchise history to score at least five game-winning goals in each of three (or more) consecutive seasons. The other players to do that are all in the Hockey Hall of Fame: Glenn Anderson (seven straight seasons: 1980–81 through 1986–87), Wayne Gretzky (five: 1981–82 through 1985–86), Jari Kurri (five: 1984–85 through 1988–89) and Mark Messier (three: 1985–86 through 1987–88).

Leafs stage two third-period comebacks

Morgan Rielly and Auston Matthews each scored tying goals in the third period for the Maple Leafs in their game on Thursday and Toronto went on to beat the Islanders in a shootout, 4–3. It’s the second game this season in which the Leafs scored two third-period tying goals, having also done that against Ottawa on January 10 (James van Riemsdyk and Rielly scored those goals). Toronto scored more than one third-period tying goal in a game only twice over the previous eight seasons combined (in October 2013 and October 2015).

Young Barzal thrives against old teams

Rookie Mathew Barzal tallied one goal and two assists for the Islanders in their 4–3 shootout loss at Toronto on Thursday. Barzal, who leads all rookies with 65 points this season, has been extremely prolific in games against the so-called “Original Six” teams. He has racked up 24 points this season versus the Bruins, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Canadiens, Rangers and Maple Leafs (five goals, 19 assists in 12 games), the most by any NHL player, rookie or veteran. Alex Ovechkin is second with 20 points against the six pre-expansion clubs.

Rinne wins number 300

Pekka Rinne recorded the 300th win of his NHL career with a 7–1 victory against the Sharks in Nashville. Rinne reached the 300-win mark in his 552nd career game, fifth-fastest of any goaltender in NHL history, behind Jacques Plante (521 games), Andy Moog (543), Marc-Andre Fleury (547) and Martin Brodeur (548). Of course, comparing goaltender win totals from different eras can be misleading. Rinne’s 300 wins include 31 overtime victories and 37 wins registered via a shootout, while Plante played his entire NHL career when overtime was not used for regular-season games, nor had anyone even considered determining a winner in a tie game by a skills contest.

Gaudreau extends road scoring streak

Johnny Gaudreau scored one goal and assisted on two in the Calgary Flames’ 5–2 win at Arizona. Gaudreau has produced 22 points in the Flames’ last 13 road games road (six goals, 16 assists) with at least one point in each of those games. His 13-game road point streak is the longest in the NHL this season and it’s tied for the second-longest such streak in Flames franchise history. Gary Roberts holds the team record with a 16-game road point streak in 1993–94, while Joel Otto (in 1986–87) and Hakan Loob (in 1987–88) also had 13-game streaks. San Jose’s Brent Burns (14 games) was the only NHL player with a road point streak of 13 games or more last season.

Scandella’s last-second OT goal beats Red Wings

Marco Scandella’s goal at the 4:59 mark of overtime earned the Buffalo Sabres a 3–2 win at Detroit. Scandella is the second player in Sabres history to score a goal in the final second of overtime in a regular-season game. The first was Jack Eichel, in Buffalo’s 3–2 victory against the Hurricanes on March 12, 2016. Scandella’s last-second overtime goal was the second in an NHL game this season. Tyler Toffoli scored at 4:59 of OT to give the Kings a 2–1 win at Boston on October 28.

Trocheck scores late third-period game-winner

Vincent Trocheck’s power play goal at 19:40 of the third period snapped a 2–2 tie and earned the Florida Panthers a 3–2 win over the Capitals. It’s the second time in Trocheck’s NHL career that he scored a go-ahead goal in the final minute of the third period. He also did that with a goal at 19:55 of the third period in a 2–1 Panthers victory at St. Louis on Feb. 20, 2017. The only other player in Panthers history to score more than one tiebreaking goal in the final minute of regulation time is Rob Niedermayer, who scored two of them (in 1997 and 1999). Trocheck’s last-minute tiebreaking goal was the second such goal by a Florida player this season, with Jonathan Huberdeau having scored one against the Red Wings on February 3. The Capitals are the only other NHL team to have scored two such goals this season (one each by Jay Beagle and Nicklas Backstrom).

Rookie Gourde remains hot for Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay rookie Yanni Gourde garnered two assists in the Lightning’s 4–3 win over the Senators. Gourde has tallied 17 points over his last 15 games. The only other rookie in Lightning history to rack up at least 17 points over a span of 15 games was Ondrej Palat, who had a high of 19 points over a 15-game span in February/March 2014.

Georgiev loses despite strong debut

The Rangers’ suffered their fifth consecutive loss with a 3–1 defeat at Montreal on Thursday, despite getting a stellar performance from their goaltender, Alexandar Georgiev, who was making his making his NHL debut. Georgiev stopped all but two of the Canadiens’ 40 shots on goal against him. Over the last 40 years, the only other goaltender to make his NHL debut with the Rangers and face 40 or more shots on goal in his first game is Dan Blackburn. At age 18, Blackburn made his NHL debut with the Rangers in a 5–2 loss to the Capitals at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 10, 2001, in which he faced a 42-shot barrage. Georgiev is the second goaltender to make his NHL debut this season and face 40-plus shots in that game. The first was Chicago’s Jeff Glass, who debuted with a 4–3 overtime win at Edmonton in which the Oilers had 45 shots on goal against him.

Pitlick extends goal-scoring streak to three

Rookie Nolan Patrick’s tiebreaking goal in the middle of the third period was the game-winning goal for the Flyers’ in their 2–1 victory against the Blue Jackets. Patrick tallied only three goals over a 38-game span from November 21 through February 16 but he has scored a goal in each of Philadelphia’s three games since then. Over the last six seasons the only other rookie to register a three-game (or longer) goal-scoring streak for the Flyers was Jordan Weal, who scored in four straight games late last season (March 26–April 1).
