Rare feat for Miller

Ryan Miller earned his 42nd career shutout by stopping all 41 Dallas shots in the Ducks’ 2-0 win on Wednesday night. This comes one game after Miller finished off a shutout in relief of John Gibson by playing the final 20 minutes of the Ducks’ 2-0 win over the Golden Knights on Monday night. The last goaltender to record a shutout after finishing a shutout in relief in his team’s previous game was Curtis McElhinney of the Blue Jackets in December 2013. McElhinney finished off a 1-0 Blue Jackets win relief of Sergei Bobrovsky on December 3 and recorded a shutout of his own against the Wild on December 6.

The 41 saves by Miller are the second most he has ever had in a shutout. Miller made 43 saves in a shutout against the Ducks in 2012.

Five Golden Knights with 20+ goals

Reilly Smith scored his 20th goal of the season for the Golden Knights on Wednesday night. Smith is the fifth Golden Knights player to score 20 or more goals this season. Three other NHL teams had five or more players score 20 goals in their first season in the league: 1970-71 Vancouver Canucks had six such players (led by Wilf Paiement’s 34 goals), 1970-71 Buffalo Sabres had five (led by Gilbert Perreault’s 38 goals) and 1979-80 Edmonton Oilers had five (led by Wayne Gretzky’s 51 goals).

First shootout goal for Schmaltz

Nick Schmaltz’s goal in the seventh round of the shootout gave the Blackhawks a 3-2 win over the Senators on Wednesday night. It was the first shootout goal of Schmaltz’s NHL career, on only his second such attempt. Schmaltz is the first Blackhawks player whose first career shootout goal was a shootout-deciding goal since Ben Smith did it at Dallas on November 29, 2013.

Kane is able at even strength

Patrick Kane gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead over the Senators with a first period even-strength goal in a game they eventually won in a shootout. It was the 20th even-strength goal of the season for Kane. This is the sixth time Kane has scored 20 or more even strength goals in one season in his NHL and Blackhawks career and the fourth consecutive season he’s done so. He’s the first Chicago player with a streak of four straight 20-goal seasons at even strength since Tony Amonte had seven in a row for the Blackhawks from 1995–96 through 2001–02. Kane’s 97 even-strength goals over the last four seasons ranks him fourth in the NHL, behind Vladimir Tarasenko (107), Alex Ovechkin (101) and Nikita Kucherov (98).
