Preview: Rangers (0-0) at Bruins (0-0)

Date: May 16, 2013 7:30 PM EDT

BOSTON (AP) - Putting the puck past Henrik Lundqvist is a huge challenge for the Boston Bruins.

Of course, they have to get it to him first and that's a tough task against the shot-blocking New York Rangers.

``They're definitely going to be laying down to block those shots,' Boston forward Patrice Bergeron said after practice for Thursday night's series opener. ``We have to be aware of that. I think it's about finding ways to get that puck to the net and faking shots and moving more.'

On Monday night, it seemed the Bruins wouldn't have to worry about that. They were close to elimination.

Then they rallied from a three-goal deficit in the last 11 minutes of the third period and beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Bergeron's overtime goal in Game 7.

``You don't give up,' Bruins forward Jaromir Jagr said Wednesday, but ``if you try to do it again, you're probably not going to do it even if you try 100 times, but it happened.'

Now it's time to forget that unforgettable comeback. It's time for the Eastern Conference semifinals, the first playoff meeting between the teams in 40 years.

Lundqvist, last year's Vezina Trophy winner and finalist for that award this season, enters the series with consecutive shutouts in Games 6 and 7 against the Washington Capitals. He stopped 62 shots in those games while facing elimination.

The key to the shutouts?

``Box them out before they get (near the goal) so they can't provide a screen,' Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi said. ``If we can't box them out, the biggest thing is getting (at) their sticks. Hankie is going to stop that shot if he sees it. We have to do a good job of letting Hankie see those first shots, make sure there's no tips.'

Girardi led the NHL this season with 125 blocked shots, just under three per game. The Rangers were sixth with 16.1 per game. And in the playoffs, they have three of the top seven shot blockers - Girardi in second place with 24, Ryan McDonagh in fourth with 20 and Ryan Callahan in seventh with 18.

And even though Bruins captain Zdeno Chara can slap the puck at more than 100 mph from the point, they're not likely to shy away.

``Anything they can get to, they're going to block,' Rangers coach John Tortorella said. ``If they have a chance to block a shot, they are going to block a shot. Everybody.'

If they do, Chara could make it painful.

``I'm certainly not going to ask him to take anything off his shot because they're blocking,' Bruins coach Claude Julien said.

He wants his players to keep their heads up and watch where they're shooting instead of just looking down and hitting the puck as hard as they can.

``We're going to have to work extra hard to get those pucks through and then get them to reach the net,' Julien said. ``At the same time, I don't think it's a big secret to know that they got a pretty good goaltender, and that traffic in front of the net is going to be something we're going to want to do a lot.'

Boston's Tuukka Rask, a more aggressive goalie than Lundqvist, also has been outstanding in the playoffs.

But he could be without three injured veteran defensemen. Andrew Ference missed Games 6 and 7, Wade Redden sat out Game 7 and Dennis Seidenberg played just 37 seconds of the finale before being sidelined. None of them practiced Thursday.

``Sometimes it's better not to practice and just to play,' said Julien, careful not to tip his hand.

Rookies Dougie Hamilton, Matt Bartkowski and Torey Krug all could be active.

``It's going to be a challenge for us,' Rask said. ``It gives these new guys an opportunity to step up and show what they've got. If I was in their shoes I'd be really excited.'

Both teams' leading goal scorers in the regular season - New York's Rick Nash (21) and Boston's Brad Marchand (18) - were shut out in their first series. But Marchand assisted on Bergeron's series-winning goal and Nash seems to be making progress.

``He certainly wasn't totally on but he's very close,' Tortorella said. ``I thought he played very well in Game 7. He's playing and I think he's going to be a really big part of this as we enter into Boston.'

Both teams snared some much-needed rest after playing two games in two days Sunday and Monday.

Bergeron expects a low-scoring series. Girardi expects it to be physical.

``Both teams want to get on the forecheck,' he said, ``create some momentum that way.'

Julien wants his team to fight for position in front of Lundqvist, who allowed just 12 goals in seven games against Washington.

``They protect their goaltender fairly well,' Julien said. ``You know he's good enough to stop what he sees. They box out extremely well, so we've got to work hard to take away that vision that he needs in order to stop pucks. There's going to be a lot of battles, I think, in this series.

``By the end of it, I think you're going to have some exhausted teams.'

Preview: Sharks (0-0) at Kings (0-0)

Date: May 16, 2013 10:00 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Raffi Torres spent the past year in Phoenix and San Jose trying to shake his reputation as a dangerous player.

His hit on Los Angeles center Jarret Stoll might have erased much of that work and put both players' postseason futures in doubt.

Stoll is likely to miss Game 2 of the Kings' second-round playoff series against the Sharks on Thursday night. The valuable two-way forward didn't return to the series opener after a hard hit from Torres late in the second period of Los Angeles' 2-0 victory.

Kings coach Darryl Sutter implied Wednesday that Stoll could be out for a significant length of time. Torres also might be sidelined for a stretch after he travels to New York for a disciplinary hearing Thursday with the NHL's Department of Player Safety, which suspended him until the hearing is completed.

``I thought it was careless,' Sutter said of Torres' hit, which occurred near the sideboards after the puck rolled away from Stoll.

A lengthy suspension wouldn't make Sutter feel any better about Torres' play, either: ``Our player is quite a bit more important than theirs.'

During the defending Stanley Cup champions' 2-0 victory over the Sharks, Stoll was bent forward when Torres approached him from the side for a shoulder-to-shoulder hit. Stoll's head also snapped back violently before he fell forward onto the ice. Torres was called for a minor penalty for charging, and Stoll didn't return to the game.

Most of the Kings declined to weigh in on the hit's legality after Wednesday's light practice, claiming they hadn't seen replays. Stoll attended the Kings' team meeting before practice, but wasn't on the ice.

The Sharks had much stronger opinions about the play: Torres, captain Joe Thornton and coach Todd McLellan all said the hit was perfectly legal, and shouldn't even have resulted in San Jose's only penalty in Game 1.

``We questioned the call of a charging penalty,' Thornton said. ``So we were kind of shocked to hear he has to fly to New York for the hearing, because we didn't see anything wrong on the play. ... It's unfortunate that Raffi has to go through this again.'

Further complicating matters, Stoll and Torres are friends after three seasons as teammates with the Edmonton Oilers from 2005-08.

The Kings would lose plenty without Stoll, a stalwart on their championship team last summer. Stoll is their third-line center and a top penalty-killer and faceoff specialist, playing a valuable two-way game while also logging time on the power play.

Although he doesn't score many points, getting just one assist in seven playoff games this spring, Stoll scored the series-winning goal in last season's upset of top-seeded Vancouver in the first round on the way to the title. He also has a history of apparent concussions earlier in his career.

``He's a big loss, one of our most valuable guys,' Kings defenseman Drew Doughty said. ``Everybody else will have to step up if we want to keep going forward.'

Torres' absence isn't likely to affect the Sharks' offensive efforts against goalie Jonathan Quick, who shut them out on 35 shots in the series opener. But Stoll's absence on defense changes the mix for Los Angeles, which must entrust additional ice time to role players without one of its leaders.

Brad Richardson, who played 13 games during the Kings' championship playoff run, is likely to replace Stoll in the lineup for Game 2. Richardson hasn't played in this postseason since Game 1 of the Kings' first-round series with St. Louis.

``It's huge, because he's one of our clutch players,' Richardson said of Stoll. ``He's the first guy on the penalty kill, and he's a power-play guy.'

Even if it is deemed legal, the hit ignites another round of trouble for Torres, the journeyman forward whose ugly reputation has surfaced again.

While playing for Phoenix last season, Torres received a 21-game suspension - initially 25 games - for a high hit on Chicago star Marian Hossa in the first round of the playoffs. That play cemented Torres' identity as a cheap shot artist and dangerous player in many NHL minds.

But the former No. 5 overall draft pick insists he has cleaned up his game during a season of largely trouble-free play with San Jose, his sixth team in six seasons.

``If he is going to miss some games, we're going to miss him,' said Sharks forward Logan Couture, who thought the hit was clean from his on-ice viewpoint. ``But it's an opportunity for other guys to step up the physical play and try to take over his role. We're going to support Raffi, and whatever happens, happens.'

Kings forward Dustin Penner thought Torres' hit was objectionable mostly because it was unnecessary. He sees little comparison to the hit by Ottawa's Eric Gryba on Montreal center Lars Eller in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series, resulting in a two-game suspension for a blow that left Eller with a concussion and a broken nose. Eller didn't return to the series as the Senators advanced.

``I think that hit (in Ottawa) was fine,' Penner said. ``I know some people don't, but it's a split-second decision. You guys can slow it down to .001 milliseconds, but he's got to make that hit, and this one (by Torres), he probably didn't need to make that hit. That's where I see the difference.'

Preview: Red Wings (0-0) at Blackhawks (0-0)

Date: May 18, 2013 1:00 PM EDT

CHICAGO (AP) - Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk is one of the NHL's most feared scorers, a wizard with the puck who is equally adept at setting up his teammates for easy plays. Chicago's Jonathan Toews has at least 23 goals in each of his six seasons in the league.

If you want to stop a Datsyuk or Toews, well, it sure helps to have a Datsyuk or Toews.

Two of the three finalists for the Frank J. Selke Trophy for the NHL's best defensive forward are taking center stage as the Red Wings and Blackhawks tangle with a berth in the Western Conference finals on the line, and it's no coincidence. The league's top teams count on their forwards to come back and pressure the opponent's top scorers, not only for defensive purposes but also to create chances on the other end.

"You need those kind of players to win, to be successful. Because you're going to have times, usually half the time in your shift you're going to be in your own end or you're going to have to be defending,' said Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville, a former NHL defenseman, "and knowing where you have to go and coming up with loose pucks or forcing these guys to make indirect plays where you get the puck back, there's a skill involved there and there's some work that's involved.'

Datsyuk and Toews will be back on the ice when Chicago hosts Detroit in Game 2 on Saturday afternoon.

The Blackhawks used a dominant final two periods to beat the Red Wings 4-1 on Wednesday night, shutting down Detroit's leading trio of Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen. Datsyuk played more than 21 minutes, but was held without a point and did not attempt a shot after he had two goals and five assists in the first round against Anaheim.

Datsyuk's struggles against the Blackhawks are nothing new. He didn't have a point in four regular season games versus Chicago and also failed to register a shot in the final two. Combined with the opener, Datsyuk has now gone almost exactly 60 minutes of ice time without putting a shot on night against the Blackhawks.

"He's going to be a top player in this series. We know that. They know that,' forward Patrick Sharp said after Chicago practiced on Friday. "It's just hopefully we can contain him in some way.'

Datsyuk had 15 goals and 34 assists in 47 games this season, helping Detroit reach the playoffs for the 22nd straight season. The three-time Selke winner also tied Toews for the NHL lead with 56 takeaways and won 55 percent of his faceoffs.

The 34-year-old Russian center, who was selected in the sixth round of the 1998 draft, is way more than just an offensive wizard.

"He can come out of nowhere and steal the puck from you and make a play, and before you know it, it's in your net,' Toews said. "He's as skilled as they come on both sides of the puck and obviously a tough guy. You've got to go out there and try to outwork him every shift, because it's tough to outclass him any other way.'

Toews is coming off another solid season, when he tied Patrick Kane for the team lead with 23 goals and also contributed 25 assists in 47 games. The captain also had career-high plus-28 rating as Chicago captured the Presidents' Trophy awarded to the team with the most points in the regular season.

"We play same type of game,' Datsyuk said. "We fight every year against each other. It's not easy. When a good player plays against a good player every time they make each other better.'

The Red Wings are desperate for anything to make themselves better after being outshot 42-21 - 36-14 over the final two periods - in the opener, and they may get a boost up front Saturday. Forward Drew Miller has pronounced himself ready to return after missing four weeks with a broken thumb.

Though he says he doesn't feel 100 percent, Miller - one of Detroit's regular penalty killers - believes he can help.

Coach Mike Babcock isn't sure whose spot Miller would take - fourth-liners Todd Bertuzzi or Patrick Eaves would be likely candidates - but he's certain of one thing.

"If Drew Miller's in a position to help our team (Saturday), he'll play," Babcock told the team's official website.

Detroit needs to figure out why it seems to wear down toward the end of games. Fifteen of the 25 goals the Red Wings have allowed in the playoffs have come in the third period, including three Chicago tallies on Wednesday.

"I saw us practice (Tuesday) and I wasn't surprised when I saw us (in Game 1)," Babcock said. "I didn't think we were very quick and executed. We're not trying to take anything away from them. They were better than us. The score (Wednesday) was more than fair as far as I'm concerned. They were better."

Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith and forward Michal Handzus missed practice Friday, but Quenneville said both are fine and should play.

It's unclear if Viktor Stalberg will join them in the lineup. The speedy winger worked outside of the top four lines in practice once again after being benched for Game 1, and he said Quenneville wants him "to produce more and be more effective.'

One area where Detroit would like to be more effective is on its power play, which produced six goals in the first round. But the Red Wings went 0 for 3 in the opener as Chicago extended its impressive streak of successful penalty kills to 29 dating to April 22.

Preview: Kings (0-0) at Sharks (0-0)

Date: May 18, 2013 9:00 PM EDT

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - A dizzying 22-second span that led to a pair of Los Angeles power play goals turned what appeared to be destined to be a tied series into an 0-2 hole for the San Jose Sharks.

The Sharks players say it didn't take much longer than that for them to put their Game 2 collapse behind them and turn their focus to defending home ice the next two games so they can tie their second-round series with the Kings.

``Coming in today, we could have been hanging our heads and moping around,' defenseman Brad Stuart said Friday. ``But I don't sense that at all. Obviously, guys aren't feeling good about what happened last night but when you look at the big picture, we feel good about knowing what we have to do and what we can control.'

So instead of looking back at the two late penalties that led to the two power-play goals that turned a 3-2 lead into a 4-3 loss, the Sharks would rather bank on the fact that they managed to score three goals against Jonathan Quick, outplayed the Stanley Cup champions for much of the night and now have home-ice advantage for the next two games beginning Saturday night in Game 3.

San Jose lost just twice in regulation at home all season, winning both meetings against the Kings and both games in a first-round sweep against Vancouver.

``We did a lot of really good things,' forward Logan Couture said. ``I thought we deserved to win that game. But we're down 2-0. It's time to come into our building. It's going to be loud. The fans are going to be into it. We have to find a way to win.'

The biggest areas of concern for San Jose are on the special teams that dominated the first round. The Sharks are 0-for-7 on the power play although they did score 5 seconds after Alec Martinez came out of the box Thursday night and allowed three power-play goals to the Kings in Game 2.

The Sharks appeared on their way to tying the series when they took a 3-2 lead into the closing minutes in Los Angeles on Thursday night. But that all changed after Stuart was called for tripping Tyler Toffoli with 2:41 to play.

The situation only got more dire seconds later when San Jose defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic flipped the puck into the stands for a two-minute delay of game penalty that irked the Sharks because they thought the puck deflected off Jeff Carter's shoulder.

``It clearly changed directions,' Vlasic said. ``I'll leave it at that.'

Dustin Brown then converted a rebound on a 5-on-3 advantage to tie the game with 1:43 left. Before the Sharks could even settle down, the Kings scored the game-winner when Trevor Lewis scored on a rebound 22 seconds later.

The Kings became just the third team since at least 1987-88 to win a playoff game in regulation when losing in the final two minutes, according to STATS LLC. Los Angeles knows it can't always count on a late-game escape to win.

``It was one of those games where we weren't as sharp as we wanted to be, but in the end, we pulled it off,' center Anze Kopitar said. ``Sometimes that happens, but we realize we've got to play better.'

The Kings have plenty of experience building on a 2-0 playoff lead, having won the first three games in all four rounds last year on the way to the first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history.

They were on the other end in the first round, having dropped the first two games in St. Louis in rather painful fashion when they allowed a short-handed goal in overtime by Alexander Steen after a misplay by Quick and a game-winning goal by Barret Jackman in the final minute of Game 2.

Los Angeles answered with four straight wins to eliminate the Blues followed by the two wins over the Sharks.

``We've had that experience this playoff already. I mean, we were down 2-0 in the last series. We were out of the series,' coach Darryl Sutter said. ``We were down 2-0 early in Game 4. We were out of the game. That's what playoffs are about. It's sort of frustrating to answer those questions, quite honestly, because our playoffs are four out of seven series, which means generally, when you break it down, every series goes six games, which means somebody wins four and if you do your math, somebody loses two. You don't win every period, you don't win every shift, and you don't win every game.'

NOTES: Kings injured F Kyle Clifford skated with the regulars at practice, but Sutter wouldn't say whether he would travel to San Jose. ... Sharks F Marty Havlat said he is getting closer to returning from a lower-body injury that has sidelined him since Game 1 in the first round. ... Sharks coach Todd McLellan said D Jason Demers (lower body) is close to being able to return for the first time since April 18.

Kings at Sharks: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at San Jose Sharks (-123, 4.5)

Los Angeles leads series 2-0.

Entering their Western Conference second-round series against their Pacific Division rivals, the sixth-seeded San Jose Sharks were one of the most dangerous teams on the power play this postseason. Heading into Game 3 at HP Pavilion on Saturday, the fifth-seeded Los Angeles Kings are the ones clicking with the man advantage. San Jose finds itself in a must-win situation thanks to Los Angeles' power play, which converted three times on six opportunities - including twice in a 22-second span late in the third period - en route to a 4-3 home triumph on Thursday that gave the reigning Stanley Cup champions a 2-0 series lead.

The Sharks were 7-for-24 on the power play during their four-game sweep of the Northwest Division champion Vancouver Canucks in the first round. They have been unable to cash in against the Kings, going 0-for-7 over the first two games. Defenseman Drew Doughty gave Los Angeles a 2-0 lead at 4:10 of the second period with a man-advantage tally and captain Dustin Brown forged a 3-3 tie during a 5-on-3 with 1:43 remaining in the third. Trevor Lewis completed the improbable comeback shortly after the ensuing faceoff with San Jose still down a skater.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS

ABOUT THE KINGS: Brown believes having a large chunk of players from last season's championship team on the roster already has paid dividends this postseason. "Experience is one thing. It's another thing to have all that experience together as a group of guys because that goes a long way when you get yourself into a hole," Brown told the Los Angeles Times after Game 2. "We didn't play a great game, but we found a way to win." The Kings also were in a hole when they lost the first two games of their first-round series against the St. Louis Blues. All that experienced group of players has done is win six consecutive contests since. Jarret Stoll did not play on Thursday after receiving a hit to the head from Raffi Torres in the series opener. While not a marquee name, Stoll has been a key part to Los Angeles' success. "He may not be a top-two-line guy for us, but he's got a lot of fingerprints all over the game every time we have one," defenseman Rob Scuderi told the Times. The Kings have won 12 consecutive home games.

ABOUT THE SHARKS: Game 1 may have been the last contest played by Raffi Torres in a San Jose uniform. An unrestricted free agent after the season, the left wing was suspended for the remainder of the series as a result of his head shot on Stoll. Torres has been banned several times during his career, most notably last postseason when he received a 25-game suspension - which later was reduced to 21 games - for a hit to the head of Chicago's Marian Hossa. Captain Joe Thornton didn't think Torres' hit on Stoll was dirty at all. "We were kind of shocked to hear that he has to fly to New York for the hearing," Thornton told the San Jose Mercury News on Thursday. "We didn't see anything wrong on the play." Coach Todd McLellan believes his was the better team in Game 2, save for the 22-second span late in the third period. "When you get three (goals), you'd better beat this team," McLellan said. "We've got to get back to San Jose and feel good about what we did for 59 minutes. ... There's a lot of good to take out of that game. I liked a lot. I disliked the fact that we lost."

TRENDS:

* Home team is 11-1 in the last 12 meetings.
* Over is 5-1-3 in the last nine meetings.
* Kings are 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Kings are 10-25 in the last 35 meetings in San Jose.

OVERTIME:

1. Kings C Anze Kopitar left Game 2 in the opening minute of the third period after being hit in the left side of his face with a puck but returned midway through the session.

2. With Torres suspended, LW Tim Kennedy was inserted into San Jose's lineup. As a result, C Scott Gomez was moved up to the third line and took advantage of the promotion by recording two assists.

3. Sharks C Patrick Marleau has scored a goal in five of his team's six playoff games.

Preview: Rangers (0-0) at Bruins (0-0)

Date: May 19, 2013 3:00 PM EDT

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Bruins have three rookie defensemen in the lineup for the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Rangers.

It's not because they want to.

It's because they have to.

``As you know, we're getting thin here,' Bruins coach Claude Julien said on Friday, a day after Torey Krug, in his first career NHL playoff game, scored to send the game into overtime and Boston defeated the New York Rangers 3-2 in Game 1 of their best-of-seven, second-round playoff series.

With veterans Dennis Seidenberg, Andrew Ference and Wade Redden injured, the Bruins used first-round draft pick Dougie Hamilton along with Krug and Mart Bartkowski on defense. Hamilton assisted on Krug's goal with 2:55 left in regulation, and Bartkowski played a career-high 26 minutes in the 3-2 victory over the Rangers.

``For a coach, you couldn't ask for a better situation,' Julien said on Friday, when his team took the day off to rest up for Sunday's Game 2. ``A lot of credit goes to the coaching staff down there (in the minor leagues) that's done a great job at preparing those guys.'

Julien would not say whether any of his injured players would be able to return for the second game. If not, he'll continue to rely on his rookies. Hamilton, who made the team out of training camp and played 42 games in the lockout-shortened season, said it helps to know that he won't be yanked out of the lineup with one bad shift.

Even if it's only because the Bruins have no choice.

``For all of us, it's not just trying to belong, but getting that opportunity to get regular shifts. It helps you stay focused,' he said. ``It makes it easier when you have that confidence that you can just stay in the game and focus on the game.'

Hamilton, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2011 draft, had five goals and 11 assists this season while averaging about 17 minutes per game. But he moved up the depth chart when injuries stripped the Bruins of three of their top six defensemen.

``We've got to remember that he's 19 years old,' Julien said. ``He's made some unbelievable plays on some goals; we saw that early when he came in and we seemed in awe of that. Playoffs is another step and he's taken that step extremely well, to me.'

To help fill in, the Bruins called Bartkowski up from the AHL for the third time this year; he had two assists and six penalty minutes in 11 games for Boston this year. And Krug, who's played three NHL games in the past two seasons, was brought up from Providence on Tuesday after Seidenberg lasted just 37 seconds in the first-round finale over Toronto.

``What we've seen from (Krug) the few games he's played with us, he doesn't seem to be intimidated by anything, or any circumstances,' Julien said. ``I didn't see a guy that was nervous at all. If anything, I saw a guy that was extremely confident at making the executions that he needed to make.'

The other change the Bruins made on defense was to rely even more heavily on Zdeno Chara. The 2009 Norris Trophy-winner, who averaged about 25 minutes per game in the regular season, has played about 30 minutes per game in the playoffs, including 35 minutes in Game 7 against the Maple Leafs and more than 38 in the opener of the Rangers series.

``He's in great shape, and he's got a couple of days here to recover. So I don't see that being an issue,' Julien said. ``To be honest with you, right now we don't have a choice. You deal with it the best way you can.'

And so do the Rangers.

``With all the minutes he has, the more tired he's going to get,' New York defenseman Steve Eminger said. ``At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if they have six veterans (on defense). We just have to put even more pressure on them and generate more offensively.'

The Rangers hope some of that offense will come from Rick Nash and Brad Richards, who have one goal between them in eight playoff games. Nash did have an assist Thursday - his third of the postseason - but has yet to find the back of the net despite taking a team-high 28 shots.

Another concern is New York's power play, which went 0 for 3 in Game 1 and has failed to convert in 14 opportunities over the last four games. The Rangers are 2 for 31 with the man advantage in the playoffs and coach John Tortorella tried to light a fire under forward Carl Hagelin, who's tied for second on the team with five points in the postseason.

"I think he's too quick," Tortorella told NHL.com when asked why Hagelin is struggling on the power-play units. "I'd like to put him out on the power play but he stinks on the power play. I can't figure it out. I can't. I love the guy. He is such an effective player, but he, as I said many times, stinks on the power play.

"But he may get an opportunity if we keep on going here."

Henrik Lundqvist, who made 45 saves in the opener, has suffered three of his four losses in the postseason in overtime.

Preview: Penguins (0-0) at Senators (0-0)

Date: May 19, 2013 7:30 PM EDT

OTTAWA (AP) - Jason Spezza doesn't have much time to return to form if the Ottawa Senators want to extend their season.

The star forward hasn't played since Jan. 27 after undergoing back surgery for a herniated disk. He'll rejoin Ottawa's lineup Sunday for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Senators trailing 2-0 to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

``I'm excited to have a chance to play again,' Spezza said. ``I feel ready to play.'

He will immediately add depth to a struggling offense and power play.

``We're excited about the skill that he brings back to our team and we're looking forward to it,' Senators coach Paul MacLean said. ``We certainly feel that he's going to give us some help on the power play, for sure. He can help us quite a bit there.'

The Senators' power play has gone 1 for 7 through the first two games.

Spezza's minutes will be monitored, and MacLean suggested his time on the ice could vary depending on the number of power plays the Senators get.

Spezza is expected to line up with Milan Michalek and possibly Colin Greening.

``He's such a skilled playmaker that if you're on the ice with him you know to keep your stick on the ice because he finds a way to get the puck to you,' Zack Smith said. ``When you're playing with guys like that, you're just more prone to go to the net and go to those areas and be more confident.'

Spezza hopes his timing comes back quickly.

``Basically I'm just going to go out and work hard and be smart,' he said. ``I expect to play well.

``I wouldn't play unless I felt I could help the team and contribute.'

Spezza had two goals and three assists in just five games during the regular season.

``It's going to be important to be in his face right away and make sure he doesn't have time and space,' Pittsburgh's Kris Letang said. ``He's got good hands, so he can make you look really bad. So if you're in his face and have a good gap, you have a better chance of having success against him.'

The Senators are undefeated at Scotiabank Place in the playoffs this year.

``We need to play to our identity,' MacLean said. ``We have to try and establish our game first. What hurt us in the first two games is not getting off to a (good) start, and we're down in the first three minutes of both games and catch-up hockey is losing hockey.'

Despite being pulled after allowing three goals in Friday's game, Craig Anderson will get the start Sunday.

``They're going to be desperate and we know this is going to be the toughest test yet,' Sidney Crosby said. ``We need to start well, but just a play a complete game and give ourselves a chance.'

History suggests the Senators might not have one when it comes to winning this series, as Ottawa has never done so after dropping the first two games.

Rallying against the Penguins certainly means tighter defense on Crosby. Ottawa played tentatively in its own end against the superstar in Game 2, and Crosby took advantage by needing just over one period to complete his second playoff hat trick in the 4-3 victory.

``He's one of the best in the game and if you give him time, space to make plays, to shoot puck he's going to burn you,' defenseman Chris Phillips said. ``That's what we did tonight. We gave him too much room and he took advantage.'

Pittsburgh outshot Ottawa 42-22 after the Senators held a 36-30 advantage in the opener. The Penguins will look for a similar effort as they look to take a stranglehold on the series before a hostile crowd.

``I think that we just turn the page on this one, move onto the next and prepare the same way,' Crosby said. ``I don't think we need to get caught up in the fact that we won two here. They're going to be pretty desperate so we better be ready to go in Ottawa.'

Grizzlies at Spurs: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memphis Grizzlies at San Antonio Spurs (-4.5, 182.5)

The San Antonio Spurs haven’t been part of the NBA Finals since 2007 when they swept the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Memphis Grizzlies have never played for the title and are in the Western Conference finals for the first time in franchise history. The two squads begin their quest for a spot in the finals in Sunday’s opening contest in San Antonio. Memphis posted a memorable 4-2 first-round series win over the Spurs in the 2011 postseason.

The fifth-seeded Grizzlies beat the Los Angeles Clippers in six games and the Oklahoma City Thunder in five to reach the conference finals. Memphis let a lead get away to fall to Oklahoma City in the opener before rolling off four straight wins. Second-seeded San Antonio swept the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round and defeated the Golden State Warriors in six games in the conference semifinals. The Spurs lost to the Thunder in last season’s Western Conference finals. San Antonio and Memphis split four regular-season meetings this season with the home team winning each time.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES: Power forward Zach Randolph had four double-doubles in the five-game series with the Thunder and is averaging 19.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in the postseason. Randolph played especially well over the final two games with Oklahoma City, averaging 25.5 points and 13 rebounds. Center Marc Gasol is averaging 18.3 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in the postseason and had four 20-point outings against the Thunder. Point guard Mike Conley rounds out a solid trio with playoff averages of 17.6 points and 7.6 assists. Conley has stepped up as an end-of-game shot-taker since Memphis dealt Rudy Gay to Toronto. “It has helped me out a lot, just the responsibility in itself has been big for me,” Conley said. “I’ve just tried to use this opportunity to get better and make my teammates better.”

ABOUT THE SPURS: Point guard Tony Parker still hasn’t forgotten last season’s disappointing appearance in the Western Conference finals and claims to be drawing motivation from it. “We were disappointed last year being up 2-0, having home court and not being able to go to the finals,” Parker said. “It gives us a lot of fuel for this year.” Parker has scored 20 or more points in seven of 10 postseason games this season and is averaging 22.4 points. He was a woeful 3-for-16 in the finale against Golden State but scored 10 of his 13 points over the final 3:35. Parker averaged 25.5 points against the Grizzlies in the regular season. Power forward Tim Duncan is averaging 18.7 points and 9.2 rebounds in the postseason with five double-doubles.

TRENDS:

* Grizzlies are 5-0 ATS in their last five road games.
* Spurs are 0-4 ATS in their last four Conference Finals games.
* Under is 4-1 in Spurs’ last five overall.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Spurs are 33-7 – including 4-1 in the postseason – when hosting the Grizzlies.

2. Duncan’s 143 postseason double-doubles ties with Wilt Chamberlain for second all-time and he has scored in double digits in 194 of his 200 playoff contests.

3. Grizzlies G Tony Allen has 25 steals in the postseason, including 12 over the last four games.

Sunday's NHL playoff action: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Boston Bruins (-127, 5)

Bruins lead best-of-seven series 1-0.

New York Rangers coach John Tortorella did his best to divert attention away from the team's punchless power play by calling out Carl Hagelin, a player who doesn't even receive ice time in that situation. The reason for Tortorella's comments may be that he's tired of seeing his team fail to convert with the man advantage, as it has done in each of the last four games and 29 times in 31 opportunities in the postseason. The sixth-seeded Rangers will look to get it in gear and even their Eastern Conference second-round series on Sunday when they visit the fourth-seeded Boston Bruins.

"I think he's too quick," Tortorella said of Hagelin following Saturday's practice. "I'd like to put him out on the power play, but he stinks on the power play. ... I love the guy. He is such an effective player, but he, as I said many times, stinks on the power play." New York went 0-for-3 with the man advantage in Game 1 before Brad Marchand scored his first goal of the playoffs 15:40 into overtime to give Boston a 3-2 triumph.

TV: 3 p.m. ET, NBC, TSN, RDS

ABOUT THE RANGERS: Thursday's result spoiled a 45-save performance by reigning Vezina Trophy winner Henrik Lundqvist, who suffered his third overtime loss of the postseason and fell to 3-11 in his career. Rick Nash picked up an assist for the second consecutive contest, but is still searching for his first goal of the playoffs. The top-line forward registered a team-high six shots in Game 1.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Coach Claude Julien did his best to get creative with his defensemen in Game 1 as veterans Dennis Seidenberg (lower-body), Andrew Ference (lower-body) and Wade Redden (undisclosed) were scratched from the contest. The trio was replaced by rookies Dougie Hamilton, Matt Bartkowski and Torey Krug, who netted a power-play goal in his first postseason contest. Captain Zdeno Chara, who is also a defenseman, extended his point streak to five games by collecting a goal and an assist and logged 38:02 of ice time. Redden practiced on Saturday, but is questionable for Game 2.

TRENDS:

* Rangers are 1-4 in their last five road games.
* Bruins are 5-0 in their last five Conference Semifinals games.
* Under is 8-1-2 in the last 11 meetings in Boston.

OVERTIME

1. Boston C David Krejci had an assist in Game 1 and is tied with Pittsburgh C Evgeni Malkin with an NHL-leading 14 points.

2. New York C Derick Brassard notched an assist to extend his point streak to six contests.

3. While the Rangers have struggled mightily on the power play, the Bruins aren't much better. They are 4-for-24 with the man advantage in the postseason.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Ottawa Senators (+115, 5.5)

Penguins lead best-of-seven series 2-0.

The Ottawa Senators hope the return of Jason Spezza can ignite a spark in their Eastern Conference second-round series with the top-seeded Pittsburgh Penguins. Sidelined since undergoing back surgery for a herniated disk in late January, Spezza will be in the lineup for Sunday's Game 3 at Scotiabank Place. Seventh-seeded Ottawa can certainly use the offense, as it dropped the first two contests of the series in the Steel City.

"We're excited about the skill that he brings back to our team and we're looking forward to it," Ottawa coach Paul MacLean said. Although his minutes likely will be monitored, Spezza may be able to provide a jolt to a Senators' struggling power play (1-for-7). MacLean could also use a better effort in keeping Sidney Crosby in check as the captain recorded his second career postseason hat trick in Pittsburgh's 4-3 victory in Game 2 on Friday.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE PENGUINS: Crosby's high-octane night propelled him into a tie with teammate Pascal Dupuis and Chicago's Patrick Sharp for the postseason lead in goals with six. The captain also sits four postseason points shy of Kevin Stevens (106) for third place in franchise history. Mario Lemieux (172) and Jaromir Jagr (147) are atop the list. While Crosby's heroics dominated the headlines on Friday, Brenden Morrow's first postseason goal in over five years stood up as the winner in Game 3. Reigning Hart Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin is riding an eight-game point streak in the playoffs and is tied with Boston's David Krejci (14) for the league lead.

ABOUT THE SENATORS: Stud defenseman Erik Karlsson admitted he's having a difficult time returning to form in the playoffs. After collecting a goal and five assists in Ottawa's first-round victory over second-seeded Montreal, Karlsson has failed to secure a point in the first two contests against Pittsburgh. "I'm not playing the way I want to," the reigning Norris Trophy winner said. "I (have to) play a little bit more poised with the puck and a little bit faster in our own zone. I can't doubt myself." The 22-year-old Karlsson, who suffered a left Achilles' tendon injury in a game versus the Penguins on Feb. 13, was beaten at the blue line on Crosby's first goal on Friday.

TRENDS:

* Penguins are 6-0 in their last six Sunday games.
* Senators are 1-9 in their last 10 vs. a team with a winning percentage above .600.
* Over is 4-1 in Penguins’ last five games following a win.
* Penguins are 5-0 in the last five meetings.

OVERTIME

1. Although Ottawa G Craig Anderson allowed a pair of soft goals to earn an early exit in Game 2, MacLean announced on Saturday that he is sticking with his netminder to start Game 3.

2. Pittsburgh G Tomas Vokoun has posted a 1.70 goals-against average and .945 save percentage en route to winning all four starts since replacing Marc-Andre Fleury.

3. Ottawa has never won a postseason series after dropping the first two games.

Boston lost 12 of last 14 visits to Manhattan (2-3 in last five); they had lost seven of nine to New York before this series started. Rangers won their last nine home games, with all three home playoff wins by a single goal- their last home loss was to Washington back on March 24. Home teams are 10-1 in this round of Stanley Cup playoffs; home teams won 12 of last 13 King-Shark games, with LA losing last six games here. Tuesday's NHL playoff action: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at New York Rangers (-135, 5)

Bruins lead best-of-seven series 2-0.

The New York Rangers are no strangers to losing the first two games of a series. After all, one needs only to remember their Eastern Conference first-round set versus Washington. The Rangers held serve at home in that series - and will look to do the same against the fourth-seeded Boston Bruins on Tuesday when the Original Six rivals meet for Game 3 at Madison Square Garden. After dropping a 3-2 overtime decision in Game 1, the sixth-seeded Rangers allowed three unanswered goals in a 5-2 setback on Sunday.

"You don't want to be down 2-0," New York coach John Tortorella said on Monday. "We know what hole we're in, but by no means is this a really bad thing. We need to win a game and try to get momentum on our side." Boston can also reflect on its first-round series to see what can happen if it pulls its foot off the throttle. The Bruins led Northeast Division-rival Toronto 3-1 in its series before escaping with a historic victory in Game 7.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, TSN, RDS

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Torey Krug is proving that the spotlight isn't too big as he navigates his way through his initial postseason. The 22-year-old defenseman scored his second goal of the series and added an assist on Sunday - with both points coming off fortunate bounces of the puck. "All that comes with confidence and being calm," Krug said of both goals. "If you're freaking out out there because the puck's not exactly where it is, you're going to get yourself in trouble."

ABOUT THE RANGERS: If Tortorella is searching for positives, well, Rick Nash finally scored his first goal of the postseason on Sunday. Nash, however, downplayed his accomplishment and shed light on the elephant in the room. "That's the obvious one. The power play has to be better," Nash said of the New York's 0-for-8 effort with the man advantage in the series and 2-for-36 mark in the playoffs. "We have to create more opportunities off it, more momentum."

TRENDS:

* Bruins are 6-0 in their last six Conference Semifinals games.
* Home team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Over is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings.

OVERTIME

1. New York G Henrik Lundqvist didn't use his ailing left shoulder as an excuse for his Game 2 performance. "It's under control," the reigning Vezina Trophy winner said.

2. Boston Ds Dennis Seidenberg (lower-body) and Wade Redden (undisclosed) practiced on Monday and will be game-day decisions, according to coach Claude Julien.

3. New York D Dan Girardi was on the ice for all five of Boston's goals in Game 2.

Los Angeles Kings at San Jose Sharks (-129, 4.5)

Kings lead best-of-seven series 2-1.

While they avoided facing the most difficult deficit against which to come back with an overtime victory on Saturday, the sixth-seeded San Jose Sharks still are in a virtually must-win situation when they host the fifth-seeded Los Angeles Kings in Game 4 of their Western Conference second-round series on Tuesday. San Jose was in danger of going down 0-3 to the reigning Stanley Cup champions as the teams ended regulation knotted at 1-1. But the Sharks began overtime with a 5-on-3 power play and cashed in 11 seconds after the first Kings penalty expired as Logan Couture scored at 1:29 to send the HP Pavilion faithful into a frenzy.

Los Angeles was in the same position San Jose found itself entering Game 3 as it lost the first two games of its first-round series at St. Louis before rallying to win four straight. The Sharks are optimistic they can continue along that path as their power play began clicking on Saturday. After going 7-for-24 in its first-round sweep of Vancouver, San Jose was 0-for-7 over the first two contests against Los Angeles before scoring twice on five opportunities in Game 3.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS

ABOUT THE KINGS: Kyle Clifford may rejoin the lineup Tuesday after missing four games with an undisclosed injury. The left wing failed to register a point in Los Angeles' first five contests this postseason. Left wing Tanner Pearson, who made his NHL debut in Game 3, likely will sit out should Clifford return. Captain Dustin Brown was named as a finalist for the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award on Monday. Brown, who was runner-up for the honor last year, joins fellow captains Jonathan Toews of Chicago and Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa as finalists. "It's not something you go out and look for," Brown said. "To be among Toews and Alfredsson in that group was special." Jonathan Quick received a game misconduct for verbally abusing the officials after Couture's overtime goal on Saturday, but the goaltender avoided any further discipline from the league. Coach Darryl Sutter told the Los Angeles Times he believes Quick needs to learn to control his temper. "I think he's got to handle that," Sutter said. "He can't be frustrated. That's a by-product of being a great goaltender."

ABOUT THE SHARKS: Martin Havlat's return to San Jose's lineup was short-lived as the veteran right wing has been ruled out for Game 4. Havlat saw less than five minutes of ice time Saturday in his first appearance since the opener of the Sharks' first-round series against Vancouver before exiting with a lower-body injury. It's not known whether it's the same problem that caused Havlat to miss the team's previous five contests. Defenseman Jason Demers could replace Havlat in the lineup, as he skated with the forwards during Monday's practice. Demers has not played since April 18 due to a left ankle injury and is hoping to get back in the lineup. "I feel good. It's just a question of getting back into game shape," he said. "As soon as you do a couple of shifts, especially in this kind of series, you'll be in shape real quick. I'm just helping out wherever I can and going where they tell me to go." If not Demers, coach Todd McLellan is likely to insert Tim Kennedy into the lineup for Havlat.

TRENDS:

* Kings are 1-9 in their last 10 road games.
* Under is 5-0-2 in Kings’ last seven road games.
* Home team is 12-1 in the last 13 meetings.
* Over is 5-1-2 in Sharks’ last eight home games.

OVERTIME

1. Four of San Jose's five playoff victories over Los Angeles have come in overtime.

2. The Kings are 1-3 on the road this postseason, while the Sharks are 3-0 at home.

3. San Jose LW Patrick Marleau leads the team with five goals and has collected eight points in seven playoff games.

Penguins at Senators: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Ottawa Senators (+122, 5.5)

Penguins lead best-of-seven series 2-1.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were moments away from securing a commanding 3-0 advantage in their Eastern Conference second-round series - only to let it slip away. The seventh-seeded Ottawa Senators will look to feed off the momentum of their double-overtime victory and even their series with the top-seeded Penguins at two games apiece on Wednesday when they reconvene at Scotiabank Place. Captain Daniel Alfredsson netted a short-handed goal with 29 seconds remaining in regulation and fourth-liner Colin Greening scored for the third time in the series at 7:39 of the second overtime as Ottawa claimed a 2-1 victory Sunday.

"You can see the desperation they have," captain Sidney Crosby said. "They want to make sure it's 2-2 going back to Pittsburgh (for Game 5 on Friday) and obviously we know the scenario is to come here and get one of two on the road and go back home with a chance to finish off the series would be great." Tyler Kennedy scored the Penguins' lone goal Sunday and Tomas Vokoun suffered his first loss since replacing Marc-Andre Fleury despite making 46 saves.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, RDS, TSN, CBC

ABOUT THE PENGUINS: Evgeni Malkin saw his eight-game point streak come to an end - in frustrating fashion. The reigning Hart Trophy winner failed to convert a point-blank chance early in the second period - with the end result being a broken stick at his own hands. Malkin also had a golden opportunity to end the contest in the first overtime, only to be denied by a sprawling save from Craig Anderson.

ABOUT THE SENATORS: Coach Paul MacLean didn't mince words when talking about the contributions of his fourth line - Greening, rookie Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Erik Condra. "That line - in the eight games that we've played so far - has consistently been our best line in the playoffs," MacLean said. "Game to game, shift to shift, they've been extremely important to us. Not only 5-on-5, but they also contribute killing penalties." Pageau had a goal in Game 2 of this series and a hat trick in Game 3 of the first-round set versus Montreal. Condra has one goal and five assists on his four-game point streak.

TRENDS:

* Penguins are 39-12 in their last 51 overall.
* Senators are 2-9 in their last 11 vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
* Penguins are 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.
* Home team is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

OVERTIME:

1. After being a spectator for the last six contests, Pittsburgh C Jussi Jokinen skated with the fourth line and worked on the power play in Tuesday's practice. Jokinen could be inserted into the lineup for Game 4.

2. Ottawa C Jason Spezza registered four shots on goal, won 15 of 25 faceoffs and finished with a minus-1 in his return from back surgery.

3. Coach Dan Bylsma did not provide an update on LW Brenden Morrow, who made a premature exit from practice on Tuesday.
