Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.....

13) UCLA coach Ben Howland put an end to the Shabazz Muhammad era in Westwood this weekend, saying the kid was going to the NBA next year. Muhammad has played well, UCLA is 23-8, for Howland to quickly send a star player on his way tells us one of two things.......
a) The kid is a pain in the butt, but considering UCLA had Reeves Nelson a couple years ago, this option is less likely than........
b) Had Muhammad returned, the NCAA would've come calling, and when the NCAA comes calling, often times the coach loses his job.

Either way, Howland has to recruit like a junior college coach; tremendous amount of turnover in his program.

12) Sunday night at 11pm, replay of a White Sox-Padre spring training game, with the great Dick Enberg on the mike. Thats quality entertainment.

11) Erik Compton is one of my heroes; guy has had two heart transplants, and he still plays on the PGA Tour. Compton finished T5 at Honda Classic this weekend in Florida, his first top 10 finish. Will somebody please make a movie about this guy?

10) Sportsbook.com posted 43.5 as the over/under for any major leaguer hitting home runs this season, the lowest such total since 1996. The bet is whether or not you think any hitter will hit 44 HRs this season. Anyone.

9) MAAC basketball tournament is next weekend in Springfield, MA, but there are no MAAC teams in Massachusetts, only one in Connecticut. What genius came up with this idea?

Geographic breakdown of the MAAC:
-- two teams in eastern NY (Marist/Siena)
-- two teams in Buffalo area (Niagara/Canisius)
-- two teams in New Jersey (Rider/St Peter's)
-- two teams in Westchester/Bronx (Iona/Manhattan)
-- Fairfield is in Connecticut, Loyola is in Maryland.

I am sure Springfield is a terrific place, but who is going to go to watch the MAAC tournament, when there are no local teams in it?

8) Further examination of Joe Flacco's contract show a $29M payment in 2016, which means the contract will get re-done after 2015, making it, in effect, a 3-year deal. Still a very lucrative deal.

7) There are bitter defeats, then there is Baylor's loss at home to Kansas State Saturday night. Game was tied with 0:01 left, Baylor had the ball out of bounds, 95 feet from the basket. Worst they can do is overtime, right?

Baylor throws a baseball pass length of court, but it goes out of bounds with no one touching it, so K-State gets it under their offensive basket- they set up a play, McGruder drains a 3 at the buzzer, and Baylor might be headed to the NIT as a result. Horrendous way to lose a game.

6) Since 1985, only two teams won the NCAA tournament without having had at least one winning streak of 6+ games during the season: Arizona in 1997, Michigan State in 2000. We'll monitor that later this month.

5) Virginia beats Duke, then loses at Boston College. Of course they did.

4) Providence won six of last seven games, after starting Big East play 2-7; credit to Ed Cooley, who seems to have things going in the right direction with his Friars. Have to win recruiting battles before you can win games, and Cooley is an excellent recruiter.

3) Was watching the European Tour on Golf Channel Sunday morning, and the 4th hole was a 685-yard par 5. 685 yards!!!! Hole wasn't too tough- the scoring average on it was something like 4.48.

2) Tampa Bay Buccaneers have 24 assistant coaches; three other teams have 23. NFL teams only have 53 active players each week. Seems like overkill, but in fairness, three of the 24 Buc assistants are strength coaches. Still, thats a lot of assistants. What do they do all winter?

1) Pretty good pair of games at Staples Center Sunday, with Thunder edging the Clippers and Lakers beating Atlanta by a point. Impossible to know, but wonder how many people were at both games?

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of February 24-March 2.

Hottest ATS

Los Angeles Clippers (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS)

After a mid-season slump, the Clippers appear to be gaining momentum for the stretch run. Los Angeles has picked up wins in four straight games and eight of its last nine. The Clippers have also covered in four consecutive games heading into Sunday’s home tilt with the Thunder.

Coldest ATS

Toronto Raptors (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

The Raptors have dropped four straight (0-4 ATS) after winning six of their previous seven contests. Rudy Gay, who is averaging over 21 points per game since being acquired by the Raptors, is dealing with back spasms and now Toronto plays three tough road games against the Warriors, Suns and Lakers.

Best over play

Sacramento Kings (1-3 SU, 4-0 over/under)

The Kings played over the total in every contest of their recent five-game road trip. Sacramento’s defense was a disgrace on the trip, allowing opponents to score an average of 120.8 points per game. The Kings return home for games with the Bobcats and over-friendly Nuggets this week.

Best under play

Dallas Mavericks (1-3 SU, 0-4 over/under)

The Mavericks have gone low in four straight games after posting an 11-3 O/U mark in their previous 14 contests. Dallas is averaging 101 points per game this season, but is scoring 92.75 per contest during its current under run. The Mavericks play the first half of a home-and-home with the Rockets in Houston on Sunday.

Scouting the schedule:

-The Chicago Bulls are entering a very tough portion of their schedule. Chicago visits Indiana and San Antonio this week before heading home for a clash with Utah. The Bulls then travel west for three games against the Lakers, Kings and Warriors. Chicago has been a pretty good bet on the road (17-11 ATS) and a horrible bet at home (9-22 ATS).

-The Utah Jazz head east for a four-game road trip beginning Monday in Milwaukee. The Jazz have been fade material on the road (10-18-1 ATS) but a great play at home (18-12 ATS) this season. Utah will also visit Cleveland, Chicago and New York this week.

Fact or Fiction

March 5, 2013

NBA Fact or Fiction is back here at VegasInsider.com, and we're taking a look at some of the most pressing questions at hand and asking whether they are totally legitimate or complete bunk.

FACT

These Bobcats Might be As Bad As Those Bobcats: Poor Charlotte. The team is 0-7 straight up and against the spread in its last seven games, and it’s going nowhere in a hurry. The epically bad 2012 Bobcats went 7-59 SU and 23-43 ATS, and they were outscored by 13.9 points per game. These Bobcats over the course of their last 48 games are now 6-42 SU, 14-33-1 ATS, and have been outscored by 12.1 points per game. The margin of defeat isn't as bad, but the ATS percentage is actually worse than last year's insanely bad team.

The Nuggets Might Win the Western Conference: It's going to take getting home court advantage in some of these series, but the Nuggs really could ultimately win the West this year. We think that teams like the Grizzlies and the Jazz killed themselves at the trade deadline, and these were the teams that were supposed to be rid of Denver early in the playoffs before it could get rolling. However, this team is now 29-11 SU and 25-14-1 ATS in its last 40 games, and its win over the Thunder this past week was a real indication that this is going to be a team that is tough to knock out of the second season.

Getting to .500 is Just What the Lakers Needed: It's been a long haul back to .500 for the Lakers from a team that was 17-25, but they have gotten the job done and are back to 30-30. They still aren't in the playoffs quite yet, but they are right on the verge of it, and if we were some of the top teams in the West, we would be scared, to say the least. G Kobe Bryant and the Lakers are on a roll right now, and they're going to be tough to stop.

FICTION

The Kings' Streak of 100+ Point Games: Sacramento has scored at least 100 points in 10 of its last 11 games, and we just aren't buying it. The Kings aren't getting good contributions out of F Patrick Patterson, and there is a point that this team is just going to fall apart at the seams. There is a reason that in spite of this run of good scoring games, the Kings still aren't averaging 100+ points for the season.

Toronto's Recent Swoon: The Raptors have failed to cover five straight games and haven't picked up an SU win since Feb. 22. There have been some tough games along the way, including losing in overtime in Milwaukee and by seven at Golden State on Monday after just running out of gas in the fourth quarter. The Raptors aren't going to get into the playoffs this year, but they are at least going to be a competent team down the stretch.

Orlando's Pre-Trade Skid: Is it possible that the Magic really made themselves a better team at the trade deadline by getting rid of G JJ Redick? We're starting to believe that the possibility is there. The team has had some awful, awful games in this stretch, but a win in New Orleans, a competitive fight against Houston, a win in Philadelphia… This isn't a mistake. Tobias Harris has been a nice contributor to the team since coming over from Milwaukee, averaging 16.8 points and 6.2 boards per game, and the possibility is there that he is evolving into the best player on the team. Once the Magic start to get healthy, they could really be taking some steps in the right direction in spite of their horrid SU and ATS records.

Will the Los Angeles Lakers make the playoffs?

Even though Los Angeles (30-30 straight up, 24-36 against the spread) got back to the .500 mark on Sunday after beating Atlanta 99-98 at the Staples Center, the oddsmakers aren’t buying the “Purple and Gold” just yet.

Sportsbook.ag is allowing bettors to answer the above question in their NBA Prop Wagers.

Los Angeles Lakers - What Will Happen in the 2012/13 Season?
Lakers Miss Playoffs 10/11 (Bet $110 to win $100)
Lakers Lose in 1st Round of Playoffs 6/5 (Bet $100 to win $120)
Lakers Lose in 2nd Round of Playoffs 7/1 (Bet $100 to win $700)
Lakers Lose in Conference Finals 10/1 (Bet $100 to win $1,000)
Lakers Lose in NBA Championship 10/1 (Bet $100 to win $1,000)
Lakers Win NBA Championship 20/1 (Bet $100 to win $2,000)

Looking at the above numbers, the Lakers missing the playoffs is the top choice. The second option is the Lakers losing in the first round and that might be a sound future investment at a plus-120 price.

If Los Angeles does make the playoffs, it will more than likely be the sixth, seventh or eighth seed. Barring a collapse by the Spurs, Thunder or Clippers, those three teams will be the top seeds in the West. So far this season, Los Angeles is 1-7 against that trio and it’s safe to say that all three of those teams would be at least 1/3 (Bet $300 to win $100) favorites over the Lakers in a best-of-seven series. So if you can get 6/5 odds now, that’s certainly screams value.

The Lakers still trail the Jazz by two games for the final spot in the Western Conference but they have started the second-half with a 5-1 record. Three of those wins came against teams with losing records and the loss was against a quality playoff club in Denver (108-119). On Tuesday the Lakers face another serious contender on the road, Oklahoma City (43-16 SU, 35-23 ATS).

Books were slow to open on this game due to the status of Thunder forward Serge Ibaka, who threw a low-blow to the Clippers’ Blake Griffin on Sunday during OKC’s 108-104 road win over Los Angeles. Despite the possibility of not having a starter, Oklahoma City opened as an 8 ½-point favorite, which tells you again what the oddsmakers think of Los Angeles.

L.A. is playing better lately but it’s hard to ignore the fact that the team is 10-19 both SU and ATS on the road and that includes three straight double-digit losses against teams with winning records.

Oklahoma City has been a beast at home this season, going 26-4 SU and 19-10 ATS. Three of those four losses came against the Eastern Conference (Hawks, Nets, Heat) with Memphis being the only team in the West to capture a win at OKC (107-97), which occurred on Nov. 14.

This will be the fourth and final meeting between the pair this season. Oklahoma City won the first two affairs but Los Angeles captured a 105-96 win on Jan. 27 as a 3 ½-point home underdog. In that win, the Lakers shot a blistering 55 percent from the floor and outscored the Thunder 30-21 in the fourth quarter.
Los Angeles will need that type of effort tonight considering OKC has won 18 straight versus teams in the West at Chesapeake Energy Arena and the Lakers have dropped five straight at this venue.

Total players are looking at an opening number of 214. OKC has watched the ‘over’ go 17-12 (59%) at home but the last two games have gone ‘under’ as the defense allowed 74 and 72 points. The Lakers have scored 100-plus points in five of their six games since the All-Star break, which helped the ‘over’ go 4-2.

After this contest, the Lakers faces the Hornets in New Orleans on zero days rest tomorrow. The Thunder will head to Madison Square Garden for a primetime battle against New York on Thursday.

Tip-off is slated for 9:35 p.m. ET with TNT providing coverage.

There are two other games on Tuesday’s card and both contests has the road team open as favorites.

Boston (31-27 SU, 25-30 ATS) at Philadelphia (23-35 SU, 27-31 ATS): After going 2-2 on a West Coast trip to start the second-half of the season, Boston avoided a letdown last Friday at home and beat Golden State, 94-86. The Celtics had three days off before that victory and will be playing with the same amount of rest again tonight. Philadelphia snapped a seven-game slide on Saturday by beating the aforementioned Warriors (104-97) but lost the next night in Washington, 90-87. The problem with Philly is its offense (92 PPG), which is the second-worst in the league. However, the 76ers have gotten 17 of their 23 victories at home and Boston’s road record (10-18) is tough to put money behind. Total players should note that despite an inconsistent attack, the 76ers have seen the ‘over’ go 20-12 at home. Philadelphia has won and covered two of its first three encounters against Boston this season but it’s listed as a home ‘dog (+2.5) at most books tonight. TNT will provide coverage of this tip at 7:05 p.m. ET.

Denver (39-22 SU, 36-25 ATS) at Sacramento (21-40 SU, 26-34 ATS): Similar to the Celtics, the Kings avoided a home trap on Sunday after a long road trip on the opposite coast. Sacramento went 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS during that span but took its anger out on Charlotte with a 36-point (119-83) romp as a 7 ½-point favorite. Can the Kings win two straight? Considering they’ve only won back-to-back games six times this season and their longest winning streak is three, it’s hard to answer yes. Even though the Bobcats were held to 83, the previous 10 opponents put up over 100 points against the Kings and Tuesday’s opponent is no stranger to the scoreboard. The Nuggets have started the second-half with a 4-1 mark (3-2 ATS) and two of those wins came on the road. If there is a doubt betting on Denver as a road favorite (-5) tonight, gamblers can point to its defense (101.8 PPG) which is the fifth worst in the league. Who’s the worst? Sacramento (104.9 PPG). When you see those numbers, it’s easy to see a total open at 221 ½ and that might be too low for this matchup. The last four in this series has gone ‘over’ the number and Denver already dropped 122 and 121 on the Kings in the first two meetings this season. Sacramento only posted 97 and 93 in those losses, which means you’ll need a better effort tonight if you’re looking at the high side of this number. Tip-of is set for 10:05 p.m. ET from Power Balance Pavilion.

Lakers at Thunder: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-9.5, 210)

The Los Angeles Lakers have finally reached the .500 mark for the first time since late December and need to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday to keep from falling right back below it. Los Angeles is back at the break-even mark for the first time since being 15-15 as it makes a run at landing a Western Conference playoff spot. Oklahoma City has won four of five and has the second-best record in the West.

The Thunder are 2-1 against the Lakers this season and forward Kevin Durant has scored at least 35 points in all three contests. Durant is averaging 37.7 points against Los Angeles this season with a high outing of 42. He has a career average of 27.4 in 20 regular-season contests against Los Angeles. The Lakers have won 13 of their last 18 games and are two games behind the eighth-place Utah Jazz in the Western Conference playoff chase. “We’re playing much, much better,” guard Kobe Bryant said after Sunday’s victory over the Atlanta Hawks. “It’s going to be a big test for us on Tuesday in a building where it’s going to be a playoff-like atmosphere and one of the teams we could see in the first round of the playoffs. I’m excited for that.”

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE LAKERS (30-30, 24-35-1 ATS): Bryant has returned to a scoring emphasis and is averaging 34.8 points over the last five games. He has scored at least 29 points in each game and had 34 in Sunday’s win over the Hawks. Bryant is averaging 28 points in the three games against Oklahoma City. He has scored 30 or more points 25 times this season. Point guard Steve Nash had 15 points and 10 assists against the Hawks for his first double-double since Feb. 3. Nash is averaging 15.3 points over the last four games.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (43-16, 35-22-2 ATS): Point guard Russell Westbrook had 29 points and 10 assists in Sunday’s victory over the Los Angeles Clippers to continue his stellar play. Westbrook has scored 20 or more points in nine straight outings and 13 of the last 14. He has shot better than 50 percent from the field in 10 of the 14 games. Westbrook’s run began after enduring a 6-of-22 shooting night in a loss to the Lakers on Jan. 27. He scored just 17 points in that contest but is averaging 25.7 against Los Angeles this season. Westbrook scored 33 and 27 points in Oklahoma City’s two wins over the Lakers.

TRENDS:

* Lakers are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 road games.
* Thunder are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 home games.

Wednesday Tips

March 5, 2013

Wednesday night is one of the busiest cards in the NBA all season long with 14 contests. Four games highlight the slate, including the Bulls heading to San Antonio, while the Bucks try to stay red-hot in a revenge situation against the Clippers. We'll begin in the Hoosier State with two Eastern Conference rivals looking to keep up their momentum moving towards the playoffs.

Celtics at Pacers - 7:05 PM EST

Boston is playing in its eighth different city in the last eight games, as the Celtics travel to Indianapolis with no rest on Wednesday night. The Pacers are rolling at the moment with seven wins in their past eight trips to the court, while slowly opening up the advantage over the Bulls inside the Central Division race.

Indiana held off Chicago on Sunday night, 97-92, but failed to cover as 7 ½-point home favorites. The Pacers own the tiebreaker advantage over the Bulls with three head-to-head victories, which will help Indiana potentially be in line for the second overall seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race behind Miami. However, the Pacers are playing with revenge after losing at Boston, 94-75 as three-point underdogs in early January, while Indiana was limited to just 31% shooting from the floor.

The Celtics head to Indiana with no rest following Tuesday's contest at Philadelphia, as Boston owns a 7-8 SU and 6-8-1 ATS record on the second of a back-to-back. On the road in this situation has turned into a profitable 'fade' spot, as Doc Rivers' club is just 2-7 SU and 2-6-1 ATS when Boston hits the highway with no rest. Boston has put together a 5-3 ATS mark in the last eight road underdog opportunities, including outright victories at Utah, New York, and Atlanta.

Blazers at Grizzlies - 8:05 PM EST

Memphis is ascending through the Western Conference with a sparkling 9-1 SU and 7-3 ATS record the previous 10 contests, as the Grizzlies look to solidify a top-four seed in the West. The Grizzlies shoot for their sixth consecutive home win on Wednesday as the Blazers invade FedEx Forum, coming off a 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS homestand.

Portland drilled offensive stalwarts Minnesota and Charlotte by double-digits to win consecutive games for the first time since early February. The Blazers were one of the coldest ATS teams heading into the All-Star break (0-5), but Terry Stotts' squad has cashed in five straight games, including as a 9 ½-point 'dog at the Lakers on February 22. Portland has actually beaten Memphis once already this season, shocking the Grizzlies, 86-84 as eight-point 'dogs on January 4, as Zach Randolph didn't face his former team due to injury.

The same story is written again on Wednesday as Randolph will miss his second straight game with a sprained ankle. Memphis' defense is back on track by allowing 84 points or fewer in five of the last six games, resulting in a 4-2 mark to the 'under.' In spite of the Grizzlies winning each of their past five home contests, Memphis has failed to cover in each of the last three opportunities as favorites of 7 ½ or more against Dallas, Orlando, and Sacramento.

Bulls at Spurs - 9:05 PM EST

San Antonio owns the most victories in the NBA (47), while winning 19 of its last 22 games overall. The Spurs go for the season sweep of the Bulls after picking up a 103-89 triumph in mid-February as part of the Rodeo road trip, cashing outright as 3 ½-point 'dogs. Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker both sat out that contest due to injury, but San Antonio shot a blistering 52% from the floor, including 8-of-16 from three-point range.

Parker remains out for the Spurs with a sprained ankle, as San Antonio managed a 114-75 blowout of Detroit without the All-Star point guard on Sunday. The Spurs easily covered as 13-point favorites to avenge a loss last month at the Palace of Auburn Hills, while allowing the second-lowest amount of points in a game this season (73 vs. Nets on 12/31). Gregg Popovich's team has put together a 3-6-1 ATS record the last 10 games as a single-digit favorite, but only two of those contests came at the AT&T Center.

The Bulls have been very ordinary lately by splitting the last eight games to fall further back of the Pacers in the Central (four games). Chicago is coming off three consecutive covers, while cashing in nine of the previous 12 road contests in the underdog role. Tom Thibodeau's club has failed to eclipse the 100-point mark in 11 of the last 12 games, while hitting the 'under' just six times in this span.

Bucks at Clippers - 10:35 PM EST

Milwaukee is slowly coming back to life after several struggles to close the first half as the Bucks put their four-game winning streak on the line at Los Angeles. The Bucks staved off the Raptors and Jazz in overtime at home the last two games, while failing to cash as 4 ½-point 'chalk' in Monday's 109-108 squeaker over Utah.

The Clippers lost for the third time this season to the Thunder on Sunday, falling in a seesaw affair, 108-104 as short home favorites. L.A. is riding a five-game hot streak against Eastern Conference opponents, while winning seven of nine home contests in interconference action. The Clips seek a sweep of the Bucks after routing Milwaukee at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in December, 111-85 to easily cash as five-point road favorites.

Milwaukee began the season owning a 5-12 ATS record against Western Conference foes, but the Bucks covered in two of the last three, including outright underdog triumphs at Dallas and Houston. The Bucks begin a three-game road swing through the state of California, which extends to Golden State (Saturday) and Sacramento (Sunday).

Bulls at Spurs: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at San Antonio Spurs (-7.5, 190.5)

The San Antonio Spurs seek their ninth victory in 11 games when they host the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday. San Antonio has the top record in the NBA and will be playing its second game since losing standout point guard Tony Parker for approximately a month with an ankle injury. Chicago also has ailing players and will be without forward Taj Gibson (knee) and guard Richard Hamilton (back) while point guard Kirk Hinrich (foot) is doubtful.

The Bulls lost at Indiana on Sunday to begin a stretch in which they play five of six games on the road. Chicago has been without star point guard Derrick Rose (knee) all season and the recent injuries have further depleted the team’s depth. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said he doesn’t want the injuries to be used as an excuse. “It’s the NBA,” Thibodeau said after the loss to the Pacers. “We’ve got plenty in that locker room. We’ve got to get the job done.” San Antonio is 24-3 at home and has won 20 of its last 21 home games as it plays the fourth contest of a six-game homestand.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN, Comcast SportsNet Chicago, Fox Sports Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE BULLS (34-26, 27-33-0 ATS): Center Joakim Noah has recorded three straight double-doubles and has 30 on the season. Noah is averaging 19.3 points, 13.7 rebounds and 5.3 blocks during the stretch. He had 15 rebounds when Chicago lost to San Antonio last month but tallied just seven points. Guard Marco Belinelli scored 20 points against Indiana after a dismal three-game stretch in which he averaged seven points and shot 29.6 percent from the field. Forward Jimmy Butler also fared well against the Pacers with a season-best 20 points.

ABOUT THE SPURS (47-14, 34-25-2 ATS): Second-year guard Cory Joseph drew the start in place of Parker against the Pistons and had eight points, four assists and one turnover in 18 minutes. Joseph was recently recalled from the Austin Toros of the D-League and impressed San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich with this showing against Detroit. “I thought he did a fine job,” Popovich said afterward. “He played a good floor game. I like his defense. I like his aggressive attitude, as far as loose balls and sticking his nose in. He’s a really committed, physical player and runs the show well.” Gary Neal will see more time at the point as his leg injury improves. Neal played 8 1/2 minutes off the bench against the Pistons after sitting out the previous three games.

TRENDS:

* Bulls are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 vs. Western Conference.
* Spurs are 38-16-3 ATS in their last 57 home games.
* Under is 6-0 in the last six meetings in San Antonio.
* Under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The teams have split the last 12 meetings but San Antonio has won eight of its last 11 home games against the Bulls.

2. Spurs F Kawhi Leonard scored a career-best 26 points in a 104-94 victory in Chicago on Feb. 11.

3. Chicago F Luol Deng is shooting just 35.1 percent from the field over the last three games.

Wednesday, March 6

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bulls could struggle with West-heavy schedule
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Chicago Bulls are one of the best road bets in the NBA this season, posting a 17-12 SU and 18-11 ATS mark as visitors heading into Wednesday’s road trip to San Antonio. The one hitch in that profitable record has been Chicago’s lack of success versus Western Conference opponents away from the Windy City.

The Bulls are just 3-6 SU and ATS when visiting Western foes, adding to an 8-13 SU and 6-15 ATS count in non-conference games on the year. Going back to last season, they’re 7-19 ATS in their last 26 versus teams from the West.

Chicago kicks off a stretch of seven straight games versus Western Conference competition in San Antonio Wednesday – four of those coming on the road.

Oddsmakers have sent out a suggested spread of Bulls +7.5 versus the Spurs. Chicago is expected to be without guards Kirk Hinrich and Richard Hamilton but forward Carlos Boozer, who is away from the team dealing with a personal matter, will play Wednesday.

Following the game in San Antonio, the Bulls return to Chicago for a home game versus the Utah Jazz before road games against the Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, and Golden State Warriors. Chicago is back in the United Center to take on the Denver Nuggets on March 18 and the Portland Trail Blazers on March 21.

The Bulls boast the third-best defense in the NBA, allowing just over 91 points per game, but it is their offense which takes a step back versus Western Conference teams. Chicago averages 94 points per game in conference clashes and only 90.1 versus Western opposition.

The last time the Bulls played San Antonio, they were limited to 89 points on 47 percent shooting, including going just 2 for 12 from 3-point range. The Spurs won and covered, 103-89, as 3.5-point road underdogs in Chicago. It was just the second time the Bulls and Spurs played over the total in their last 10 meetings.

Wednesday’s total was sent out at a suggested 189 points..

NBA

Wednesday, March 6

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fullcourt press: Wednesday's NBA betting notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brooklyn Nets at Charlotte Bobcats (+8.5, 190.5)

The Brooklyn Nets are in the early stages of a stretch that has them playing 12 of 15 games away from home, so they will be looking to exploit a matchup with the league's worst team when they visit the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday. Brooklyn has dropped two straight and four of five to fall 3 1/2 games behind the front-running New York Knicks in the Atlantic Division and into a logjam with Chicago and Atlanta in a battle for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The Nets have won the last five meetings.

Utah Jazz at Cleveland Cavaliers (-2, 200.5)

The Utah Jazz are in the midst of a slump and hope to halt it when they visit the host Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. The Jazz have lost four of five games and have slipped to eighth in the Western Conference. Utah fell to the Milwaukee Bucks in Monday’s opener of a four-game road trip. Cleveland has lost back-to-back games and is 1-2 during a five-game homestand. The Cavaliers have lost six consecutive games against Utah.

Boston Celtics at Indiana Pacers (-9, 184.5)

If the season ended today, the Boston Celtics would visit the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. An early preview of that will take place on Wednesday, when the Pacers host the Celtics. Boston has won three straight games and will be playing the second night of a back-to-back after outlasting Philadelphia on Tuesday. Indiana is playing as well as any team in the NBA not named the Miami Heat.

New York Knicks at Detroit Pistons (+4, 196.5)

The city that never sleeps was staring at its worst nightmare when New York Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony crashed to the floor without being touched in Monday's comeback victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Anthony escaped serious injury and was diagnosed with a stiff and sore right knee, putting his availability in question for New York's game at the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday. The league's second-leading scorer said the knee has been bothering him for a while and he recently underwent an MRI exam.

Philadelphia 76ers at Atlanta Hawks (-8, 189.5)

The Atlanta Hawks will try to stop a three-game slide that has seen them slip to sixth in the Eastern Conference standings when they return home to face the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. Philadelphia lost for the ninth time in 10 games with a 109-101 home loss to Boston on Tuesday and is trying to avoid being swept in a back-to-back set for the seventh time this season.

Orlando Magic at Miami Heat (-15, 204)

The Miami Heat look to extend their 15-game winning streak on Wednesday when they visit the Orlando Magic, who face an uphill battle against their in-state rivals. Ten of Miami’s 15 victories during their franchise-record winning streak have come by double digits, including Monday’s 97-81 win at Minnesota. Orlando is 7-29 against Eastern Conference opponents, but they’re coming off an encouraging 105-102 win over the New Orleans Hornets on Monday.

Washington Wizards at Minnesota Timberwolves (-3, 188.5)

The banged-up Minnesota Timberwolves will try to avoid a season-worst seventh consecutive loss and a season sweep at the hands of the visiting Washington Wizards on Wednesday. The short-handed Timberwolves have dropped six straight after a 97-81 home loss to Miami on Monday. The Wizards have played much better over the past month, as they've won eight of their last 12 games and are coming off a 90-87 home win over Philadelphia in which they rallied late.

Portland Trail Blazers at Memphis Grizzlies (-8, 185.5)

The Portland Trail Blazers are desperately trying to get back into the playoff race in the Western Conference and have won three of their last four games. Things get a lot tougher this week with a three-game road trip, beginning Wednesday at the Memphis Grizzlies. The Blazers are 3 1/2 games behind the eighth-place Utah Jazz but own an 8-21 record on the road, where they will play 12 of their last 23 games.

Los Angeles Lakers at New Orleans Hornets (+1, 205.5)

After working hard to get back to the .500 mark for the first time since late December, the Los Angeles Lakers fell right back below the break-even point by losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday. Los Angeles takes a stab at evening its record again when it visits the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday. New Orleans suffered a humiliating home loss to the Orlando Magic on Monday and is just 11-19 at home.

Houston Rockets at Dallas Mavericks (-2.5, 222)

The Houston Rockets snapped a nine-game losing streak at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks with a vengeance, rolling to a 33-point victory on Sunday. The Mavericks will have a chance to avenge that rout and extend their home domination of their in-state rival when they host Houston on Wednesday. Dallas has won the last five matchups against the Rockets at American Airlines Center and cannot afford to give up much more ground in the Western Conference, trailing eighth-place Utah by 5 1/2 games.

Toronto Raptors at Phoenix Suns (+2, 193)

The streaky Toronto Raptors head into Wednesday’s contest against the Phoenix Suns looking to snap a five-game skid and keep their dim postseason hopes alive. The Raptors appeared ready to make a serious push after winning five straight in early February, but they’ve since fallen 8 1/2 games behind Milwaukee for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Phoenix abandoned its playoff dreams long ago, but the Suns have strung together their first three-game winning streak since mid-December.

Chicago Bulls at San Antonio Spurs (-8, 191.5)

The San Antonio Spurs seek their ninth victory in 11 games when they host the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday. San Antonio has the top record in the NBA and will be playing its second game since losing standout point guard Tony Parker for approximately a month with an ankle injury. Chicago also has ailing players and will be without forward Taj Gibson (knee) and guard Richard Hamilton (back) while point guard Kirk Hinrich (foot) is doubtful.

Sacramento Kings at Golden State Warriors (-11.5, 222.5)

The Golden State Warriors are enjoying their longest homestand of the season and will be playing 15 of their remaining 21 games in their own arena. That continues when they host the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday. The Warriors dropped the final four games of a five-game road trip but returned home on Monday and earned a win over the Toronto Raptors. The Kings are hitting the road after falling at home to Denver on Tuesday.

Milwaukee Bucks at Los Angeles Clippers (-9.5, 203.5)

The Milwaukee Bucks look to extend their four-game winning streak on Wednesday when they visit the Los Angeles Clippers, who have won eight of their last 10. The Bucks have solidified their standing as the eighth and final playoff team in the Eastern Conference, and are in position to move up a few spots with five of their next eight games against teams with losing records.

Thursday TNT Tips

March 6, 2013

A big night in the NBA on Thursday in spite of the small card as TNT broadcasts a pair of games involving four teams that are headed to the postseason. The late contest showcases two Western Conference squads that look to make the next step in the playoffs this season when the Nuggets host the Clippers. The night begins in the Big Apple with a tired New York club that returns home to host the defending Western Conference champions.

Thunder at Knicks - 8:05 PM EST

Oklahoma City heads to Madison Square Garden for the start of a mini two-game East Coast swing that concludes in Charlotte on Friday night. The Thunder has won five of their last six following a three-game skid in mid-February, as the lone loss came at Denver last Friday by two points. OKC takes on New York for the first time this season, while making its first visit to Manhattan since a 112-98 defeat at the Garden in December 2010.

The Knicks won without Carmelo Anthony in last night's 87-77 barnburner at Detroit. New York outscored Detroit, 22-12 in the final quarter, as Anthony sat out the victory with a knee injury suffered in Monday's win at Cleveland. Raymond Felton led the Knicks with 26 points, while Amar'e Stoudemire came off the bench to chip in 22 points in New York's fifth victory in the last six contests.

The Thunder ran away from the Lakers in Tuesday's 122-105 home triumph to cash as 9 ½-point favorites. The game finished 'over' the total of 215, as the two teams combined to convert 53 free throws and 20 three-pointers. Russell Westbrook put together one of his best offensive games of the season by shooting 15-of-29 from the floor for a game-high 37 points. OKC has hit the 'over' in six of the last nine contests, including three of the previous four road games.

New York has failed to cover five straight home contests, but Mike Woodson's team has picked up victories in seven of the last 10 at the Garden. The Knicks are in the midst of four straight 'unders,' while limiting four straight opponents to fewer than 100 points. Anthony is likely a game-time decision on Thursday night, but expect the All-Star forward to suit up in this nationally televised affair.

Clippers at Nuggets - 10:35 PM EST

Two of the top four teams in the Western Conference meet at the Pepsi Center as Denver enters Thursday's action with six consecutive wins. The Nuggets own the best home mark in the West at 26-3, including 11 straight victories in the Rockies as the Clippers come to town for the second time this season.

Denver lost the first meeting at Staples Center on Christmas night, 112-100 as 6 ½-point 'dogs, while allowing the Clippers to put up a 42-spot in the second quarter. The Nuggets shot 50% from the floor, but L.A. received strong bench efforts from Jamal Crawford (22) and Matt Barnes (20) for the home triumph.

The Clippers couldn't pull off another win less than a week later on New Year's night as the Nuggets held off Los Angeles, 92-78 as one-point home favorites. L.A. scored just 35 second-half points this time around, while six Nuggets put together double-digit outputs as Ty Lawson missed the game due to injury.

There's very little reason to fade the Nuggets at home, as George Karl's team has cashed in nine of the last 11 games at the Pepsi Center. Following an 11-1 mark to the 'over' at home from early January through the end of February, Denver has cashed the 'under' in the last two home contests against Atlanta and Oklahoma City (both with totals of 212 and above).

Los Angeles heads to Denver with no rest following Wednesday's home contest with Milwaukee, as the Clips have compiled a 10-5 SU and 8-7 ATS record on the second of a back-to-back. The Clips have excelled in this situation on the highway, winning seven of nine games with no rest away from Staples Center this season.
