Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Ohio State went to Bloomington and beat Indiana 67-58; excellent win for the Buckeyes, who had lost to the Hoosiers at home.

-- All three home teams won in the first round of the Horizon tourney.

-- 8-24 Longwood upset 16-16 NC-Asheville in the Big South tournament, the first fairly big upset of March Madness.

-- Ugly night for St John's, which lost by 26 at Notre Dame in a game with a fight at the end. Red Storm hasn't made much progress under Lavin.

-- Rutgers couldn't hold a 31-21 halftime lead, lost 60-54 to Marquette, as the two Big East teams from New Jersey continue to flounder. Rutgers is going to get pummeled in the Big Dozen for years to come.

-- Boise State deserves to be in the NCAAs; not sure they'll get there, but I'm 100% positive they're good enough. Boise-San Diego State in 4-5 game at MWC tourney next Thursday might be the highlight of the day.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

13) In case anyone asks you, Winthrop 60, Radford 58 was the first final score of March Madness, in the first round of the Big South tournament.

12) Last year the CAA had four teams ranked in the top 90 in the country; this year, #140 George Mason is the CAA’s top-ranked team, and they finished T5 in the CAA regular season standings (17-13, 10-8).

11) Its only an exhibition game (repeat: its only an exhibition game) but the Dominican Republic had 28 hits and crushed the Phillies 15-2 Tuesday.

10) In 47 years of rooting for the Rams, Pat Haden was my least favorite player, a guy who divided his loyalty between his football career and going to law school at a time when the Rams were legit Super Bowl contenders every year (in the mid-to-late 70’s).

Now Haden is AD at his alma mater, USC, and word is out that he recently interviewed UTEP basketball coach Tim Floyd for the vacant Trojans’ hoop job, but there is one small problem- Floyd would be replacing Kevin O’Neill, who was hired to replace Floyd himself four years ago, after the NCAA came down on the Trojans for recruiting violations (Floyd was never directly implicated, which got him off the hook).

Maybe Haden should call Vince Ferragamo for advice on who to hire.

9) When Texas Longhorns have their pro day on campus for NFL prospects, an older alumnus will also be working out for NFL teams. Vince Young, one of the best Longhorns ever, is an NFL free agent and is looking to impress an NFL team.

He took classes in Austin this winter and is looking to impress someone. If JaMarcus Russell can get looks from NFL teams, Young should too.

8) Paul Konerko went 3-3 against Team USA Tuesday; now he's one of the candidates to replace Mark Teixeira in the team, after Teixeira sprained his wrist and is out of the WBC.

7) Think about the Bronx infield right now: ARod-Jeter-Teixeira, all hurt. Cano is playing in WBC. Tickets for Bronx spring training games run from $17-33. Who exactly are you paying to see? Francisco Cervelli?

6) Pitch counts in the WBC are as follows:
first round: 65 pitches. second round, 80 pitches, third round, 95 pitches.

If you hit the pitch limit during an at-bat, the pitcher is allowed to finish that at-bat.

5) On Jan 23, Southern Mississippi beat Marshall 103-46 in Hattiesburg; it was 53-17 at the half; Tuesday, the Golden Eagles lost 88-84 at Marshall, which basically kills their at-large hopes. Brutal loss.

4) Excellent ballgame in Las Vegas last night, as Boise State went into the Thomas & Mack and had a 10-point second half lead, but UNLV rallied and beat the Broncos, 68-64. UNLV's last three home wins are by a total of only eight points. MWC tourney is in Vegas next week.

3) Before you rag on Gonzaga's schedule, know that they're 5-0 against Big X teams this season. 5-0, against West Virginia, Baylor, K-State and both Oklahoma teams. Went unbeaten in their league. They're legit.

2) High school game with kid from New Rochelle hitting 60-footer at the buzzer to win the sectional final against perennial power Mount Vernon was great TV, it even made the NBC Nightly News, but I feel horrible for the kid from Mount Vernon who threw the last pass away, after stealing the original inbounds pass.

Kid holds onto the ball, his team wins, but now he’s an Internet sensation for the wrong reason. Mount Vernon has a proud basketball tradition, I just feel bad for the kid. New Rochelle doesn't make a 60-footer, no one notices.

1) Over last four years, Middle Tennessee is 56-14 in Sun Belt Conference games; they’re 33-3 the last two years, but they haven’t won the Sun Belt tournament during that time, which means that there will be just immense pressure on the Blue Raiders this weekend in Hot Springs, AR.

It’s the tough part of being a big fish in a small pond; you still have to win that conference tournament to make the Field of 68. Middle Tennessee will be a team to watch for the next week. If they get to the NCAAs, they can beat someone. Its a lot easier to be the underdog.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Study group: Wednesday’s Top 25 NCB betting notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DePaul Blue Demons at Syracuse Orange (-22, 148)

Syracuse will try to stop its slide down the Big East standings and snap a three-game skid when the 16th-ranked Orange host DePaul on Wednesday night. Syracuse has slipped into a tie for fifth in the conference with three straight losses to ranked opponents, but it has a prime opportunity to get on track with a visit from struggling DePaul.

The Blue Demons have lost four straight and 13 of 14 after an 83-73 loss at South Florida on Sunday. DePaul has lost 42 consecutive games against ranked opponents since knocking off No. 16 Villanova on Jan. 3, 2008. Syracuse has won the past six meetings dating to 2006. The Orange have lost two straight at the Carrier Dome after a 38-game home winning streak.

Michigan Wolverines at Purdue Boilermakers (+6, 134)

Michigan’s Trey Burke has been a model of consistency. The sophomore guard has scored at least 15 points in all 16 Big Ten games as the eighth-ranked Wolverines prepare to play at Purdue on Wednesday. Burke came through with 21 points and had two clutch steals late as Michigan beat rival Michigan State 58-57 on Sunday, rebounding from a damaging loss at Penn State. The Wolverines need help to catch Indiana for a share of the league title, but would like to break out of a four-way tie for second in the conference.

Purdue helped Michigan by winning at second-place Wisconsin 69-56 on Sunday and has won two of three as it attempts to find a way into postseason play. The Boilermakers, who led by a point at halftime on Jan. 24 in Michigan before losing 68-53, stand first in the Big Ten in rebounding and Michigan is eighth.

Oklahoma State Cowboys at Iowa State Cyclones (-2, 151)

Oklahoma State looks to win its fourth straight game when the No. 14 Cowboys visit Iowa State on Wednesday night. Oklahoma State, which is 5-4 on the road, is coming off a 78-65 victory at home against Texas on Saturday. The Cowboys are 63-53 in the series against Iowa State and have won the last two meetings, including a 78-76 victory Jan. 30 in Stillwater.

Iowa State is on a two-game losing streak. The Cyclones are coming off an 86-69 loss at Oklahoma on Saturday. Iowa State is 15-1 at home, its only loss a 108-96 overtime defeat to Kansas on Feb. 25.

Georgetown Hoyas at Villanova Wildcats (+1, 118)

On the doorstep of its longest winning streak in over a decade, No. 5 Georgetown can also clinch at least a share of its first regular-season Big East title since 2007-08 on Wednesday with a win at Villanova. The Hoyas, who have twice amassed 11-game winning streaks under coach John Thompson before this season, have a shot of enjoying their longest streak since the 2000-01 team opened up its season with 16 straight victories. Georgetown holds a half-game lead over second-place Louisville and can win the conference outright with two more victories.

Each of the Hoyas’ aforementioned winning streaks have come to an end on the road against Big East foes – a fate they hope to avoid against the Wildcats, who have already defeated two top-five teams this season. Villanova registered consecutive home wins against then-No. 5 Louisville and then-No. 4 Syracuse in late January, but is 5-5 since and has dropped two straight after Sunday’s 73-64 overtime loss at Pittsburgh.

Richmond Spiders at VCU Rams (-13, 136)

No. 19 Virginia Commonwealth doesn't control its own destiny for an Atlantic 10 regular-season championship, but a win over Richmond at home Wednesday would keep the Rams' chances alive. The last time these crosstown rivals met, Jan. 24, the Spiders snapped Virginia Commonwealth's 13-game win streak with an 86-74 overtime victory.

The Rams enter this edition of the Black & Blue Classic having won two of three in a crucial stretch against first-place No. 15 Saint Louis, Butler and Xavier. For Richmond, the win over VCU wasn't the turning point it had hoped. Since then, the Spiders have gone 4-5 with just one road win. But with wins in their last two games -- Richmond closes with last-place Duquesne on Saturday -- the Spiders can improve their conference tournament seed.

Vanderbilt Commodores at Florida Gators (-21, 113)

Ninth-ranked Florida seeks consistency as it takes the floor for its final regular-season home game Wednesday against Vanderbilt. The Gators have dropped two of their past four games, but hold a two-game lead over Kentucky and Alabama and already have clinched a share of the SEC’s regular-season title. Florida needed a 15-0 run to overtake Alabama on Saturday, 64-52, as the Gators shot 2-for-13 from 3-point range.

Vanderbilt is tied with Texas A&M for 10th in the conference, but the Commodores have won three in a row and four of their past five. Vanderbilt beat Georgia and Auburn last week by a combined eight points.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Miami Hurricanes (-14, 120)

After losing at Duke on Saturday, Miami (Fla.) has a chance for a big celebration at home. The seventh-ranked Hurricanes can clinch their first outright ACC title with a victory over visiting Georgia Tech on Wednesday. Miami has dropped its last two on the road, but has yet to lose in 13 games at its BankUnited Center. Sophomore point guard Shane Larkin continues to enhance his candidacy for ACC player of the year, recording 25 and 22 points in the last two games for the Hurricanes.

Georgia Tech has shown progress, going 5-6 in the last 11 games since starting with five straight losses in ACC play. The Yellow Jackets struggle offensively, but have played pretty well on the other side of the court -- ranking fourth in the league in scoring defense and field-goal percentage defense.

Saint Louis Billikens at Xavier Musketeers (+3.5, 118)

No. 15 Saint Louis can claim at least a share of its first regular-season conference title in 42 seasons on Wednesday when it travels to Xavier. The Billikens, who have won 11 straight, are on their longest winning streak since a 14-game winning streak during the 1993-94 season. St. Louis owns a one-game lead over second-place Virginia Commonwealth and can also gain the top seed in the Atlantic-10 Conference tournament with a victory in one of its final two regular-season games.

In order for the Billikens to secure a share of its first regular-season title since finishing in a three-way tie for first in the Missouri Valley Conference during the 1970-71 season, Billikens interim coach Jim Crews will need to get a win over Musketeers coach Chris Mack, who he coached as a player at Evansville for two seasons. Xavier is 1-2 heading into the final game of its four-game homestand and coming off Saturday’s 77-72 loss against Massachusetts after ending Memphis’ 18-game winning streak on Feb. 26.

New Mexico Lobos at Nevada Wolf Pack (+7.5, 131)

No. 11 New Mexico can rest easy heading into the final week of Mountain West play after clinching its fourth conference title in five seasons as well as the No. 1 seed for next week's Mountain West tourney in Las Vegas. "This is a special group of young men to be in a league that's arguably the best in the country and to lead it wire to wire and win it speaks volumes," head coach Steve Alford told the Albuquerque Journal after the Lobos' title-clinching 53-42 victory over visiting Wyoming on Saturday. The Lobos, who are hoping to garner at least a No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament with a strong finish, have won five straight since a 64-55 loss at UNLV on Feb. 9.

It's a entirely different story for Nevada, which limps into the contest in ninth (last) place in its first year in the Mountain West and needs a sweep of the Lobos and at Colorado State on Saturday to have any chance of avoiding the dreaded 8 vs. 9 play-in game on Tuesday. The Wolf Pack have dropped a season-high five straight, including a 80-63 home loss to in-state rival UNLV on Saturday, and eight of their last nine. This despite returning three starters from a squad that went 13-1 and won the WAC a year ago.

Handicapping this week's mid-major conference tournaments
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For some, March Madness doesn’t begin until Selection Sunday. For others, it starts with the big conference tournaments. But for numerous mid-major leagues around the country, March Madness starts this week with conference tournaments kicking off.

Here’s what to watch for in the mid-major conference tournaments beginning this week:

America East – March 9-16

Favorite: Stony Brook (23-6 SU, 1-1 ATS) – The Seawolves have been the class of the America East since jumping to Div. I in 1999 but have never gone to the NCAA.

Upset watch: Vermont (19-10 SU, 3-0 ATS) – The Catamounts won the America East last year and split the season series with Stony Brook this season.

Atlantic Sun – March 6-9

Favorite: Mercer (21-10 SU, 0-3 ATS) – The Bears not only come into the A-Sun tournament as the top seed but are also playing hosts at the Hawkins Center.

Upset watch: Stetson (14-15 SU, 0-0 ATS) – The Hatters come in as a No. 3 seed and took a recent win over No. 2 Florida Gulf Coast. Stetson can run up the score in a hurry.

Big South – March 5-10

Favorite: Charleston Southern (17-11 SU, 0-1 ATS) – The Buccaneers have the offensive firepower to leave the other contenders in the dust. They caught a break with the injury to High Point’s John Brown.

Upset watch: Coastal Carolina (14-14 SU, 0-1 ATS) – The Chanticleers play host to the Big South tournament and were nearly unbeatable on their home court during conference play.

Colonial Athletic Association – March 9-11

Favorite: Northeastern +200 (19-11 SU, 13-12 ATS) – The Huskies clinched the No. 1 seed before last weekend’s loss to Old Dominion, however, their wheels have wobbled with a 2-3 record (1-4 ATS) in their last five.

Upset watch: Delaware +220 (18-13 SU, 13-13-1 ATS) – The Blue Hens enter the CAA tournament on fire, winning four straight and eight of their last 10 games.

Horizon League – March 5-12

Favorite: Valparaiso -200 (24-7 SU, 17-10-1 ATS) – The Crusaders took advantage of a down year and Butler’s defection this season. It’s them or Detroit +175.

Upset watch: Green Bay +350 (16-14, 16-12 ATS) – The Phoenix, the No. 4 seed, will turn to big man Alec Brown and Keifer Sykes to shake up the Horizon postseason.

MAAC – March 8-11

Favorite: Niagara +250 (18-12, 13-13 ATS) – The Purple Eagles enter as a slight favorite, having won the MAAC regular season title – just one game in front of Iona (+275).

Upset watch: Loyola-Maryland +275 (21-10 SU, 12-12-1 ATS) – The Greyhounds are kind of the odd man out when it comes to MAAC contenders. They defeated Niagara and were a solid 7-4-1 ATS on the road this season.

Missouri Valley Conference – March 7-10

Favorite: Creighton EVEN (24-7 SU, 15-13-1 ATS) – The Bluejays took their spot back atop the MVC with a dominant win over Wichita State last weekend.

Upset watch: Evansville +1,000 (18-13 SU, 17-11 ATS) – The Purple Aces could be a wildcard in the MVC tournament. Evansville has thrived as an underdog and has two wins over WSU.

Northeast Conference – March 6-12

Favorite: Robert Morris (22-9 SU, 2-1 ATS) – The Colonials ran away with the NEC regular season crown and are looking to get over the postseason hump after losing in the title game the past two years.

Upset watch: Bryant (19-10 SU, 0-1 ATS) – The Bulldogs nearly took both meetings with Robert Morris this season, winning back in January and losing by two points last week.

Ohio Valley Conference – March 6-9

Favorite: Belmont -300 (24-6 SU, 14-13 ATS) – The Bruins played a who’s-who of mid-major darlings as well as Kansas, Stanford and VCU in non-conference play before dominating the OVC.

Upset watch: Murray State +350 (20-9 SU, 11-15 ATS) – The Racers will need to win the OVC to get back into the NCAA, losing their last two games. That should be more than enough motivation for star guard Isaiah Canaan.

Patriot League – March 6-13

Favorite: Bucknell (25-5 SU, 2-1 ATS) – The Bison benefit from the injury to Lehigh star C.J. McCollum, who isn’t expect to play in the tournament.

Upset watch: Lafayette (17-14, 1-0 ATS) – The Leopards roll into the postseason on a five-game winning streak which started with an upset win over Bucknell – one of only two conference losses for the Bison.

Southern Conference – March 8-11

Favorite: Davidson -300 (23-7, 14-14-1 ATS) – The Wildcats remain the class of the SoCon and strut into the postseason on a 13-game winning streak.

Upset watch: Charleston +350 (22-9 SU, 11-15-1 ATS) – If momentum is the maker of upsets, the Cougars may present some upset value after winning four of their last five and eight of 10 to end the season.

Summit League – March 9-12

Favorite: North Dakota State +125 (22-8, 16-11 ATS) – The Bison boast the No. 8 defense in the country, limiting opponents to 55.4 points per game. They’re just ahead of rival South Dakota State at +140.

Upset watch: Oakland +400 (16-15 SU, 13-15 ATS) – The Grizzlies have wins over NDSU, SDSU and Western Illinois this year and have a potent offense that spreads the love around.

Sun Belt Conference – March 8-11

Favorite: Middle Tennessee State -375 (27-4 SU, 14-13 ATS) – The Blue Raiders are fueled by last year’s upset in the conference tournament and lost just one game in league play.

Upset watch: Arkansas Little Rock +1,500 (17-14 SU, 15-13 ATS) – The Trojans enter the postseason off a big win over Arkansas State. WKU’s run last year proves anything can happen in the Sun Belt tournament.

West Coast Conference – March 6-11

Favorite: Gonzaga -400 (29-2 SU, 16-11-2 ATS) – The new No. 1 team in the nation could get caught looking ahead to a top seed in the NCAA in the WCC tournament.

Upset watch: St. Mary’s +280 (26-5 SU, 15-12-1 ATS) – The Gaels come into the tournament on a five-game winning run, with their only loss in the past 10 outings coming to Gonzaga.

Revolving-door top spot could mean more NCAA upsets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are the latest team to reign over the college basketball Top 25, becoming the fifth different program to be ranked No. 1 so far this season.

Gonzaga, which is ranked No. 1 for the first time in school history, joins Indiana, Duke, Louisville, and Michigan (Kansas was ranked No. 1 in the USA Today Coaches Poll in Week 13) among those that have shared top billing in the country.

The last time the top spot saw such a turnover was the 2003-04 season, when five different schools split time as the nation’s No. 1. That year’s NCAA tournament was ripe with early-round upsets and many are predicting a wide-open bracket this March.

Here’s a look at the four biggest Cinderella schools from the 2004 tournament and which teams could follow in their footsteps when the Madness begins on March 19:

No. 9 UAB upset No. 8 Washington (+1) and No. 1 Kentucky (+10.5)

Who could do it this year?: Creighton Bluejays (24-7 SU, 15-13-1 ATS)

Numerous bracket predictors have the Bluejays pegged as a No. 9 seed in the NCAA. Creighton was a regular in the Top 25 until hitting a three-game skid in early February. The Bluejays have the experience and star power – forward Doug McDermott – to shock their way into the Sweet 16.

No. 12 Pacific upset No. 5 Providence (+7)

Who could do it this year?: Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders (27-4 SU, 14-13 ATS)

Barring another collapse in the Sun Belt tournament, MTSU should be dancing come Selection Sunday. The Blue Raiders cut their postseason teeth with a strong run in the NIT last year and are among the toughest defensive programs in the country (57.4 points allowed per game – 16th overall).

No. 10 Nevada upset No. 7 Michigan State (+2.5) and No. 2 Gonzaga (+9)

Who could do it this year?: Oklahoma Sooners (19-9 SU, 16-8 ATS)

Some bracketologist have the Sooners on the NCAA bubble but stamped as a No. 10 seed. Oklahoma has upset potential, knocking off Kansas, and has been one of the best bets in college hoops this year. The Sooners’ biggest weapon may be their free-throw shooting (76 percent), which is key in tournament upsets.

No. 12 Manhattan upset No. 5 Florida (+4.5)

Who could do it this year?: Akron Zips (23-5 SU, 13-9-1 ATS)

The Zips had a 19-game winning streak snapped this past weekend, a nice wakeup call heading into the final week of the schedule. Akron is one of the better balanced teams – offense and defense – in the country and nearly knocked off No. 14 Oklahoma State in overtime early in the season.

Thursday's Tips

March 6, 2013

**Kentucky at Georgia**

--BetOnline.com opened Kentucky (20-9 straight up, 10-16 against the spread) as a four-point road ‘chalk.’

--UK is on the bubble with two regular-season games remaining, including a home tilt vs. Florida this weekend. The defending national champions are No. 51 in the RPI Rankings with only one win (at home vs. Missouri) over a Top 50 opponent. The Wildcats are 1-4 against the RPI Top 50, 6-9 versus the RPI Top 100.

--John Calipari’s team saw its three-game winning streak snapped in Saturday’s costly 73-60 loss at Arkansas as a 2.5-point road underdog. UK committed 18 turnovers, got beat 43-36 on the boards, missed 10 free throws and hit only 3-of-14 shots from 3-point land. Archie Goodwin finished with a team-high 14 points in the losing effort. Willie Cauley-Stein had a double-double with 13 points, 10 boards and four blocked shots.

--Georgia (14-15 SU, 15-10 ATS) is on fire for our purposes, posting an incredible 10-1 spread record in its last 11 games. The Bulldogs are coming off Saturday’s 78-68 win over Tennessee as two-point home underdogs. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 25 points, grabbed nine rebounds, made four steals and dished out a pair of assists. Charles Mann added 18 points and eight assists without committing a turnover. Mann put the game on ice with his free-throw shooting down the stretch, finishing 12-of-14 from the charity stripe.

--Mark Fox’s team is 11-6 SU and 7-6 ATS at home inside of Stegeman Coliseum. The Bulldogs have won four of their last five both SU and ATS at home.

--UGA is led by Caldwell-Pope, a sophomore guard with a future at the next level. ‘KCP’ is currently listed as the final pick (#30) in the first round of NBADraft.net’s 2013 mock draft. The former McDonald’s All-American is averaging team-highs in scoring (18.0 points per game), rebounding (6.9 RPG), field-goal percentage (44.1%) and steals (2.1 per game).

--Since losing its best player Nerlens Noel to a season-ending ACL tear, Kentucky has gone 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS.

--Kentucky owns a 1-4 spread record in five games as a road underdog. Meanwhile, Georgia has a 1-2 record both SU and ATS as a home underdog.

--The ‘under’ is 13-9-1 overall for UGA, 9-3 in its 12 home games with a total.

--The ‘over’ is 14-11 overall for UK, 4-1 in its last five games. However, the ‘Cats have seen the ‘under’ go 6-4 in their 10 true road assignments.

--The road team is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 UK-UGA games.

--ESPN will have the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Oregon at Colorado**

--BetOnline.com opened Colorado (19-9 SU, 15-11 ATS) as a 3.5-point favorite.

--Oregon (23-6 SU, 11-15-1 ATS) is No. 48 in the RPI Rankings, going 3-4 against RPI Top 50 opponents and 8-5 versus RPI Top 100 foes.

--Dana Altman’s team has won five of its last six games but is mired in an abysmal 3-10-1 ATS slide. Oregon is coming off Saturday’s 85-75 comeback win over Oregon St. as a 10-point home ‘chalk.’ The Ducks trailed the Beavers 41-34 at intermission but they rallied to outscore their arch rivals 51-34 in the second half. Carlos Emory scored a team-high 21 points, while Arsalan Kazemi produced 17 points and 12 rebounds.

--CU has won 11 of its 13 home games, going 6-5 ATS at home. The Buffaloes are 3-3 ATS in their six games as single-digit home favorites.

--Thad Boyle’s squad had won five of its last six games before dropping a 62-46 decision Saturday at California as a five-point underdog. Xavier Johnson had 14 points and seven rebounds in CU’s losing effort.

--Colorado is led by sophomore guard Spencer Dinwiddie and junior forward Andre Roberson. Dinwiddie averages 15.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, while Roberson is averaging 10.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.4 blocked shots per contest.

-CU is on the right side of the bubble and is probably safe thanks to an RPI of 30 with a 4-4 record against Top 50 opponents. The Buffs have a 9-8 ledger against the RPI Top 100.

--When these schools met in Eugene on Feb. 7, Colorado captured a 48-47 win over the Ducks as a seven-point road underdog. Roberson led CU’s balanced offense with a team-high 10 points and 13 rebounds. Emory and E.J. Singler scored 14 points apiece for Oregon.

--Oregon freshman point guard Dominic Artis missed nine games and more than a month of action with a foot injury before coming off the bench and contributing in Saturday’s come-from-behind win over Oregon St. Artis was limited to 12 minutes of playing time, but he produced six points by draining both of his attempts from beyond the arc.

--The ‘under’ has cashed in eight consecutive games for Colorado to improve to 14-5 overall. The ‘under’ is 5-2 in the Buffs’ seven home games with a total.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--When I was at Harrah’s Casino during Final Four weekend in New Orleans last year, I walked past Arkansas head coach Mike Anderson and Missouri head coach Frank Haith standing against the wall chatting. About an hour later as I was playing blackjack, I noticed the two of them walk past my table. I found that a bit odd and tweeted as much the following day. To run into each other and have a quick cordial convo was one thing, but it seemed strange that they were still hanging out an hour later. Anyway, after Haith had to be restrained by his assistants from going after Anderson in Tuesday’s blowout victory in Columbia, I found it even odder that they were hanging out last year. Obviously, things have changed since then. Here’s to a rubber game between the two schools in Nashville next weekend at the SEC Tournament.

--Alabama provided me with one of my most fortunate winners of the season in Tuesday’s 87-83 loss at Ole Miss as a five-point underdog. This was the definition of a wrong-side winner for the Crimson Tide, which trailed by 15 with 3:42 left and by 10 with 49 seconds remaining. What made the backdoor cover even luckier was how the Rebels were clutch at the free-throw line when the foul-fest began. Nevertheless, trading 3’s for a pair at the stripe worked for ‘Bama backers thanks to six 3-pointers in the last 1:52 of the game. Trevor Lacey knocked down three of the late treys.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Sports Illustrated did a thing on the 50 most powerful people in sports this week; here are some of their choices:

1) Roger Goodell—I’m really surprised he isn’t a lawyer; you'd think all commissioners were either lawyers or used car salesmen.

4) John Skipper—Boss of ESPN oversaw $9B in subscriber fees and advertising revenue LY.

5) Alan R. Selig—Former used car dealer oversees a sport when an average franchise sells for $605M.

6) Stan Kroenke—Owns Rams, Nuggets, Avalanche and a soccer team in England. I talked his ear off once out in Las Vegas about the Rams; he’s a good guy.

9) Phil Knight—Turned Nike into a powerhouse, and is generous with his money to schools and hospitals.

11) Mark Walter—Head of the Guggenheim Partners, who paid over $2B for the Dodgers; how do people get that wealthy?

Interesting Note: SI included no active players on their list of 50.

*****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random Lists of Three............

13) Three best QB’s in 2:00 drill; in other words, my team is down three points, 2:00 to go, we've got the ball on our 20. These are the three QB’s I would I want on my side: John Elway-Kurt Warner-Tom Brady.

People who know me will howl because I’m a Ram fan, but in all three Super Bowls Warner played in, he led his team to the tying/go-ahead TD in the last 3:00. He has the three highest passing yardage games in Super Bowl history, out of 46 games. I rest my case.

12) If I could go back to age 17 and make my college choice all over again, I’d be a smart human and narrow it down to these three schools: Arizona State-Pepperdine-Cal-Santa Barbara. I mean really, only a damn fool puts Oneonta State down as a potential college destination.

As it was, I stayed home and went to UAlbany which worked out OK, just that with a little effort, I could’ve given myself a major weather upgrade.

11) My three favorite places to eat: Battista’s on Flamingo in Las Vegas (across from Bally’s), Delmonico’s here in beautiful downtown Colonie and any Steak ‘n Shake (one in Kissimmee, FL is good, as is the one in South Point Hotel in Las Vegas).

10) If I could invite any three people to dinner, so I could pick their brains, I’d choose Bob Uecker, Bill James and Billy Beane.

9) Three best helmets in the NFL: Rams-Chargers-Saints. Whoever decided San Diego should go back to the white helmets deserves a raise.

8) Three best events I’ve been lucky enough to see in person: 2000 NFC title game, Rams-Bucs in St Louis; 2008 World Series Game 3, Rays-Phillies; Alabama at Tennessee in Knoxville, in 2004. SEC football is an event unique in its intensity.

7) Vacation bucket list, and I intend to do all three of these after I retire from the day job: A’s spring training in Arizona; an LSU home night football game; a day at the 16th hole at the Phoenix Open golf tournament.

6) My three all-time favorite movie scenes:
-- Nick Nolte/Bob Cousy talking while Cousy shoots free throws in a dimly hit gym in Blue Chips. Some of the dialogue was ad-libbed and it was done in one take.
-- In the movie Dave, at the end, when Secret Service guy Ving Rhames tells Kevin Kline, who was an actor standing in for the President, that he would’ve taken a bullet for him. Dave is an underrated movie.
-- Al Pacino’s “Game of Inches” speech in Any Given Sunday. Actually, the scene with Pacino and Robert Deniro talking in a diner in Heat is also a very good scene, two heavyweights working together.

5) Three underrated sports rivalries....
-- Falcons-Saints-- They came into the NFL a year apart, and have best rivals in same division most of that time.
-- Richmond-VCU-- Teams are in same city, same league again, and they play contrasting styles.
-- Seton Hall-Rutgers-- Teams recruited against each other as they both tried to become relevant in Big East; now Rutgers is moving on to the Big Dozen, and they'll still recruit against each other. You can't win games on the floor until you win a few recruiting battles.

4) Three people I’d like to see get inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame: Charles Oscar Finley, former owner/GM of the A’s, Bill James, who is responsible for the increased use of numbers/analytics and Dr Frank Jobe, who pioneered Tommy John surgery in 1974.

Who has done more for baseball than that guy? (You could have a medical wing to the HOF with Dr James Andrews in it, too).

3) Three best college mascots: Chanticleers (Coastal Carolina), Anteaters (Cal-Irvine) and Horned Frogs (TCU).

2) Three best baseball caps: Oakland A’s (same hat since 1972), the black Arizona Diamondbacks batting practice cap and the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates hat, with gold crown and black brim.

1) My three favorite announcers to listen to on TV: Mike Tirico/Brent Musberger on play-by-play, Jeff Van Gundy as an analyst.

Study group: Thursday’s Top 25 NCB betting notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oregon Ducks at Colorado Buffaloes (-4, 126)

Oregon continues its run at the Pac-12 regular-season title when it visits Colorado on Thursday. The No. 25 Ducks are tied for first place with UCLA with two games remaining and will win the crown if they win both games, no matter how UCLA or third-place California fare. The Buffaloes are tied for fifth place and seeking a regular-season sweep of the Ducks. Colorado notched a 48-47 victory on Oregon’s homecourt on Feb. 7.

The Buffaloes are 2-2 over their last four games after suffering a 16-point loss to California last Saturday. Colorado’s NCAA tournament prospects would be bolstered by a second victory over Oregon. The Buffaloes close the regular season by hosting Oregon State on Saturday. Oregon is 6-3 on the road entering the two-game swing against Colorado and then Utah on Saturday. The Ducks have won five of their last six games and haven’t played since beating Oregon State on Feb. 28. Oregon won its lone meeting against UCLA and holds the tiebreaker edge with the Bruins.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT OREGON (23-6, 12-4 Pac-12, 11-15-1 ATS): Senior forward Carlos Emory scored a career-best 21 points against Oregon State and is averaging 16.6 points over the last five games. Emory is shooting 54.4 percent over the hot stretch. Freshman point guard Dominic Artis played 12 minutes off the bench against the Beavers after missing the previous nine games with a foot injury. Artis averages 10 points per game and could see more action with junior Johnathan Loyd battling an illness this week. Artis ranks fourth on the squad behind senior forward E.J. Singler (11.5), Emory (11.2) and freshman guard Damyean Dotson (11 per game). Dotson injured his hip in the Oregon State contest and is expected to play against Colorado. Senior forward Arsalan Kazemi (9.4 points, 9.9 rebounds) has eight double-doubles this season.

ABOUT COLORADO (19-9, 9-7 Pac-12, 15-11-0 ATS): The Buffaloes seek a fast rebound from a poor effort against California in which they set season lows for points scored (46) and field-goal percentage (23.1). Freshman forward Josh Scott was back in the lineup after missing two games with a concussion and had 11 rebounds for his third double-digit effort on the boards. Scott ranks third on the Buffaloes in scoring at 11.2 per game. Sophomore guard Spencer Dinwiddie averages a team-best 15.2 points, sophomore guard Askia Booker contributes 12.8 points and junior forward Andre Roberson averages 10.8 points and leads the nation in rebounding (11.5). Roberson ranks second in school history with 1,019 career rebounds and is 36 away from surpassing leader Stephane Pelle (1999-2003).

TRENDS:

* Ducks are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 road games.
* Buffaloes are 20-9 ATS in their last 29 games following a ATS loss.
* Under is 4-1 in Ducks last five road games.
* Under is 12-3 in Buffaloes last 15 home games.

TIP-INS:

1. Colorado has won the last two meetings and holds a 6-3 series edge against the Ducks.

2. Dinwiddie has topped 20 points seven times this season.

3. Singler and Loyd each have 105 career steals, tying for 10th on Oregon’s all-time steals list.

Wisconsin Badgers at Michigan State Spartans (-4.5, 116)

Seeding for the conference tournament — and perhaps even a shot at a conference title — will be on the line when No. 12 Michigan State hosts No. 21 Wisconsin in a Big Ten showdown Thursday. Both teams are one game behind league leader Indiana in the loss column and caught in a logjam for the Nos. 2-5 seeds. It's the fourth consecutive meeting with a ranked team for Michigan State, which is trying to snap a three-game losing streak.

The Badgers are looking to bounce back after having a three-game winning streak snapped with a 69-56 home loss to Purdue. It was a rare home defeat for Wisconsin, which closes the regular season with road contests at Michigan State and Penn State. The Spartans have won the past four meetings, including a 49-47 slugfest earlier this season in Madison. Michigan State has won 32 of its last 34 games at Breslin Center.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT WISCONSIN (20-9, 11-5 Big Ten, 11-15-1 ATS): The Badgers are experienced, especially in the frontcourt where three seniors start. Big man Jared Berggren (11.6 points, 7 rebounds) and junior guard Ben Brust (11.3 points, 5.4 rebounds) are the team's top scorers, but freshman reserve Sam Dekker is an outstanding outside shooter and one of the top sixth men in the Big Ten. Dekker has scored in double figures in six straight games. The Badgers' real strength, though, is their defense. They hold opponents to 55.8 points per game (ninth in the nation) and 39.4 percent shooting (42nd).

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (22-7, 11-5, 11-13-2 ATS): The Spartans also are terrific at the defensive end, holding opponents to 59.8 points (32nd) and 39.3 percent shooting (40th), but they also boast four double-digit scorers and another on the cusp. Outstanding freshman Gary Harris (13.3 points) and junior Keith Appling (13.2 points) form one of the top backcourt duos in the Big Ten, and junior forward Adreian Payne (10.1 points, 7.4 rebounds) has come up big lately. Payne has six double-doubles this season and has averaged 15.3 points and 12 rebounds over the past four games.

TRENDS:

* Home team is 13-5 ATS in the last 18 meetings.
* Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Michigan St.
* Badgers are 1-7 ATS in the last eight meetings in Michigan St.
* Badgers are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings.

TIP-INS:

1. The home team has won 13 of the past 15 meetings played on campus, with the exceptions being Michigan State's wins at Wisconsin the past two seasons.

2. Wisconsin has won its past two road games against top-10 teams, beating No. 8 Ohio State in 2012 and No. 2 Indiana earlier this season.

3. Payne has 102 blocks, the fourth-most in school history. He needs four more to tie Delvon Roe for third all-time.
