NBA
Armadillo's Write-Up

Saturday, May 11

Carmelo Anthony was 13-26 in Game 2 after shooting 35-95 (36.8%) from floor in his first four games vs Indiana this year; JR Smith is 15-51 in three losses vs Pacers, 15-36 in three New York Ws- he might see his playing time cut here, since he hasn't been productive. Knicks get Amare Stoudemire back here; not sure how he'll affect their chemistry. Indana needs to keep Anthony under 40% from floor to win. Eight of last 12 Knick games stayed under the total; 12 of last 16 Indy games went over. New York lost 81-76/125-91 in its two visits to Conseco this year, with Pacers leading 74-44 at halftime of Knicks' last visit here.

Memphis won five of last six games, losing by hoop in Game 1; Martin reverted to 2-11 from floor in 29 unproductive minutes, failing to give Oklahoma City a scoring threat to compliment Durant. Last four series games were decided by six or less points. Thunder PG Westbrook is out for this series, which puts onus on vet PG Fisher and BC alum Jackson, who has four turnovers in 60 minutes in series. 17 of last 22 Thunder games stayed under the total. Six of last eight Memphis games went over the total. Oklahoma City covered four of last five as an underdog.

Spurs at Warriors - Game 4

May 11, 2013

The lone game taking place on Sunday's card is an intriguing matchup simply from the tip time. The Warriors are playing their first early afternoon contest at home this season with a 12:35 PM PST tip-off, as Golden State looks to even up its series with San Antonio at 2-2. The Spurs actually pulled off quite an accomplishment in Game 3 to take the 2-1 series edge.

For the first time in the postseason, the Warriors lost at Oracle Arena, a 102-92 defeat to the Spurs, as San Antonio pretty much led for the final 38 minutes. Gregg Popovich's team cashed outright as 2 ˝-point underdogs, while nailing the money-line at +125. Finally, San Antonio's defense slowed down Golden State's hot shooting from the perimeter, limiting the Warriors to 39% from the floor. Stephen Curry turned his ankle late in the fourth quarter, but the Golden State sharpshooter never got going by hitting 5-of-17 shots.

The Spurs counted on four players to lead the way from a scoring standpoint, as Tony Parker stepped up with a 32-point effort, the most he has scored this postseason. Manu Ginobili struggled again from three-point range by hitting just 1-of-8 shots from downtown, but Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard picked things up in the frontcourt with a combined 38 points.

'Over' bettors were shafted for a second straight game, as the Spurs and Warriors sat at 105 points at halftime in Game 3. The total closed at 201 ˝, but Golden State's struggles from the floor resulted in just 44 second-half points, as the Warriors couldn't overcome a nine-point deficit. In Game 2, the two teams combined for 36 points in the final quarter after putting up 155 points in the first 36 minutes on a 205 total.

Curry is listed as a game-time decision on Sunday after receiving treatment on his sprained left ankle. The All-Star mildly sprained his ankle in Game 2 of the Denver series, but returned to score 29 points in the following contest at home, a 110-108 victory over the Nuggets. Parker sat out Saturday's practice with a bruised left calf, but he will likely play in Game 4.

The Warriors fell to 3-1 SU/ATS at Oracle Arena in the postseason following Friday's loss, while dropping to 11-5 in the last 16 home contests. Mark Jackson's club also suffered its ATS loss in the playoffs after eight straight covers, as that streak actually extended to 11 dating back to April 12.

The Spurs had issues in the postseason on the road in years' past by posting a 2-11 ATS record from 2010-2012. However, San Antonio has bounced back nicely by winning and covering all three away contests this postseason, while improving to 1-3 ATS the last four opportunities as an underdog. The role is flipping in Game 4 as the Spurs are listed as one-point favorites, as San Antonio has covered just three of the last nine times in the road 'chalk' role.

The total dropped to 198 ˝ from the 200+ numbers in the first three games, but that has to do with Curry's status and the early tip-off. Golden State put together a 9-7-1 mark to the 'over' in home games with totals below 200, which included an 'over' in the final regular season home meeting with San Antonio, 116-106. The contest tips off at 3:35 PM EST and can be seen nationally on ABC.

Preview: Spurs (58-24) at Warriors (47-35)

Date: May 12, 2013 3:30 PM EDT

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The San Antonio Spurs are suddenly the team with a relaxed point guard who can dominate, and the Golden State Warriors are back to worrying about theirs.

Tony Parker cracked jokes and declared he'd ``definitely' start before he rested face down on a table for a massage on his bruised left calf during San Antonio's practice at the University of San Francisco on Saturday. Stephen Curry never surfaced during the portion of Golden State's light shootaround open to reporters at the team's downtown Oakland headquarters, going through treatment on his nagging left ankle behind closed doors.

The Warriors said X-rays on Curry's ankle were negative and no MRI exam is scheduled. Curry told a pool reporter in the afternoon that he's hopeful to play - though remained murky about how much or how well - and is officially a game-time decision for Sunday's critical Game 4 tilt of the Western Conference semifinals.

The Spurs lead the best-of-seven series 2-1.

``You never really know how it's going to feel the next day,' Curry said. ``You just keep with the treatment. Same ol' story. I have the same answers.'

Just as this season began with questions about his troublesome ankles, the biggest game of Curry's career is being overshadowed by questions about his durability.

Curry came off a curl and his left ankle - which he sprained in Game 2 in the first round against Denver but seemed to finally be back to full strength - landed awkwardly when he planted his feet to receive the ball with a little less than five minutes remaining. Curry hobbled around but stayed in the game, with nervous chants of ``Curry! Curry!' breaking out among the yellow-shirt wearing sellout crowd of 19,596.

Curry limped out of the locker room and walked down a long hallway with his left ankle - not the twice surgically repaired right ankle that has sidelined him in past seasons - wrapped in black tape. Warriors coach Mark Jackson said Curry appeared in better spirits when the two passed each other at an intersection driving to practice in the morning and Curry waved and honked his car horn.

``I've been there where I've put my head down, didn't want to talk to my coach,' Jackson said.

The tight turnaround between games likely won't help Curry's cause. Sunday's game starts at 12:30 p.m. local time, giving him about 38 hours from the end of Friday night's game to recover.

Curry said he's not planning on receiving another anti-inflammatory injection to help ease the pain, which he did after Game 2 and before Game 3 against Denver for the first time in his career, because ``you don't want to get into that kind of habit.'

``I'm hoping my body responds on its own enough to eliminate that from the conversation,' he said.

The setback for San Antonio's All-Star point guard seems far less severe.

Warriors center Andrew Bogut inadvertently kicked Parker's calf in the fourth quarter. Parker came out of the game briefly, and trainers wrapped his leg as he sat on the bench.

Parker said the bruise ``feels like a baseball in my calf' and limited his ability to elevate on shots when he returned. Doctors determined no X-rays were necessary, and he planned to spend the off day trying to loosen up the muscle, including working out in a pool.

``I just can't see myself not playing,' said Parker, who scored 25 of his 32 points in the first half of San Antonio's 102-92 win Friday night at Oracle Arena to regain home-court advantage. ``I'll definitely play.'

So much about this Western Conference semifinal has flip-flopped, and both sides remained cautious knowing it easily could again.

The Warriors led for 95 of 106 minutes in the first two games, leaving San Antonio with a disappointing split after blowing a 16-point lead in the final four minutes of Game 1 to lose in double overtime. Curry and backcourt teammate Klay Thompson took turns with scintillating shooting displays, then both went cold in Game 3 for the first time.

San Antonio outshot Golden State 50.6 to 39.3 percent by curbing Curry and Thompson on the perimeter, though the Spurs didn't feel like they defended any differently.

``There's no answer to anything like that,' Popovich said. ``You just play the game. Some nights you shoot it better than other nights. They didn't shoot it as well as they did, and we shot better. If there was a formula for that, everybody would be shooting 50 of 60 percent every night.'

If Curry can't play or is limited, that surely wouldn't bode well for Golden State's chances of regain its streak shooting stroke.

Jarrett Jack would receive more minutes, but the savvy veteran hardly commands as much attention as Curry, who made an NBA-record 272 3-pointers in the regular season. The Warriors went 2-2 without Curry this season, including a 95-88 loss at San Antonio on Jan. 18, when Jack scored 20 points as the starter.

Both teams are prepared to make major adjustments if Curry or Parker is limited. Each also hopes that doesn't happen, knowing the style of the game would be entirely different.

``It probably wouldn't be as fun of a game, honestly,' Thompson said. ``They are two of the most entertaining guards to watch in the NBA.'

To those who say Steph Curry shouldn't have played whole game in 1st game of series, Warriors were +1 in 42:00 he played in Game 3- Spurs outscored them by 11 in 6:00 he sat out. Warriors are 11-1 vs spread in last twelve games overall; over is 4-5 in their playoff games. Spurs are now 6-1 in playoffs, with five wins by double digits; home side is 5-2 in series games this year. Curry/Thompson combined to shoot 12-37 last game; not sure why Warriors get off to slower starts at home, but they have. Curry is supposedly gametime decision here (ankle).

Spurs at Warriors: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Golden State Warriors (+1, 198)

Spurs lead best-of-seven series 2-1.

The Golden State Warriors were supposed to take control of the Western Conference semifinals when the series returned to Oakland, Calif. Instead, the veteran San Antonio Spurs proved that they were not ready to slow down with a Game 3 win, and will be looking for a commanding 3-1 lead in the series when they visit the Warriors again on Sunday. Golden State star Stephen Curry suffered another left ankle injury at the end of Game 3.

Curry fought off a sprain to that same ankle in the first round, needing an injection at one point to bring down the inflammation. The 25-year-old has had ankle problems throughout his career and will be a game-time decision on Sunday. The Warriors are already dealing with All-Star David Lee’s torn hip flexor, which has limited him to five minutes total since Game 1 of the first round. The Spurs have an injury concern of their own with Tony Parker, who is dealing with a tight calf. Parker, who scored 25 of his 32 points in the first half to put San Antonio in control on Friday, is not expected to miss Game 4.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE SPURS: San Antonio showed some fight early in Game 3, with Tim Duncan shoving Warriors center Andrew Bogut on their way back up the court after one possession. That aggression was evident on the defensive end, where the Spurs bottled up Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson and held Golden State to 39.3 percent shooting. Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green have drawn the unenviable assignments on Thompson and Curry most of the time and limited the “Splash Brothers” to 12-for-37 in Game 3. San Antonio was held in check for all but a few minutes during the first two games of the series and Parker had struggled getting past Thompson’s length on offense. That changed in Game 3, when he was able to get into the lane and went 13-for-23 from the field. The calf injury, which occurred in the fourth quarter, affected his lift and led to some missed shots late, but the Spurs already had the game under control.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Curry has easily the most scrutinized ankles in the Bay Area this week, with Bogut’s surgically-repaired ankle a distant second. Curry put up 44 points in the Game 1 loss and took over late to hold off the Spurs in Game 2 while Thompson took over the bulk of the scoring. Curry rolled the ankle planting after coming off a curl late in Game 3 and limped noticeably the rest of the game. X-rays taken after the game came back negative, and he will test it again in **** warmups on Sunday. “You never really know how it’s going to feel the next day,” Curry told reports. “You just keep with the treatment.” The Warriors have had their depth tested throughout the postseason with Lee on the shelf and have shown an ability to matchup with any alignment the opposition puts out. Golden State started centers Festus Ezeli and Bogut together in Game 3 and have gone small before with Jarrett Jack in the starting lineup and Harrison Barnes pushed to the No. 4 spot.

TRENDS:

* Warriors are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 vs. Western Conference foes.
* Under is 7-0 in Spurs’ last seven Sunday games.
* Under is 4-1 in Warriors’ last five overall.
* Warriors are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Duncan has averaged 21.7 points and 10 rebounds in the series. He has 141 career postseason double-doubles.

2. The Warriors fell to 3-1 at Oracle Arena in the postseason. They owned a 28-13 record in the building during the regular campaign.

3. San Antonio G Manu Ginobili is 4-for-23 from 3-point range in the series.

After blowing a chance to take command of the Eastern Conference semifinals in Game 2, the Pacers rebounded for an 11-point win in Game 3 and have another opportunity to take command of this best-of-seven series by beating New York at home Tuesday night in Game 4.

``We should approach this game the same way that they're going to approach it, and that's a must-win,' Pacers swingman Paul George said Monday. ``We've got to get this game. We've got to get this game under our belt, take care of our home court. That'll just set us up to take care of business on the road.'

The Pacers couldn't have created a better blueprint.

Only two teams -- Indiana and Memphis -- started the week with perfect home playoff records. Indiana has won its four games by an average of 16.5 points and Memphis headed into Monday night's game with a 13-point victory margin at home. As for the Knicks, well, they're 0-3 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse this season.

Indiana also finished the regular season as the NBA's best rebounding team and has been even more dominant in the playoffs, something New York has learned the hard way. The Knicks have been beaten up on the glass in both losses and were outscored 20-10 on second-chance points Saturday night.

If the Pacers do that again in Game 4, the second-seeded Knicks probably will go home facing a 3-1 deficit in the best-of-seven series Eastern Conference semifinals.

``We don't want to get relaxed. We don't want to feel happy or complacent,' George said. ``We've got to come out and play, again, the same way that they're going to approach the game, and that's just with a lot of energy. We have to match their energy but still play our style of basketball.'

Lately, New York has looked downright anemic offensively and it doesn't appear their bench is getting much better, literally.

Guard J.R. Smith, the NBA's top sixth man, actually increased his shooting percentage playing just hours after spiking a 102-degree fever Saturday morning. He missed practice Sunday and Monday, but has promised to be ready Tuesday night. Forward Kenyon Martin, who has been defending Indiana's big men, woke up feeling ill Sunday. He, too, has missed the last two practices. Both players are listed as questionable.

On Tuesday, guard Iman Shumpert joined the list of ailing players, sitting out with a sore left knee. Coach Mike Woodson said he is probable for Game 4.

NBA scoring champion Carmelo Anthony and Smith are a combined 40 of 112 from the field against Indiana, and Anthony is trying to rebound from a dismal fourth quarter in which he had no baskets and only two points.

And New York has to break out of this funk against one of the NBA's stingiest defenses by winning on the road.

Could it get any worse for the Knicks?

``I wouldn't want to go back home down 3-1, so Tuesday's a pivotal game for us,' Woodson said. ``I have to get these guys pumped up and ready to go.'

Things sound promising.

Following the latest loss, Anthony told reporters things would be different in Tuesday's rematch. When the Knicks returned to practice Sunday, they looked and sounded like a team that was more interested in staying composed than getting angry.

``There can't just be one or two guys out there,' center Tyson Chandler said. ``It has to be an entire time and that's where we're falling short right now.'

The Pacers might have even more to prove, though.

After starting the season with visions of reaching at least the conference finals, they are now just two wins away from achieving that goal. A year ago, they were in exactly the same spot -- up 2-1 with Game 4 at home.

But Miami won the next three games, knocking the Pacers out of the playoffs and teaching them a valuable lesson.

``It shows that a 2-1 lead means nothing,' Pacers guard George Hill said. ``A team can make miracle plays and miracle games. So, we felt like this before last year up 2-1 and really kind of let our guard down in Game 4 and gave them back that momentum and they kicked us out the playoffs because of that. We just have to come into Game 4 with that same energy and effort, just like we're down 2-1 with our backs against the wall.'

Preview: Warriors (47-35) at Spurs (58-24)

Date: May 14, 2013 9:30 PM EDT

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson placed a prominent poem by an unknown author in every player's locker before Game 4 against the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday that had a simple title:

Don't Quit.

Jackson's gritty Golden State team never has this season. Neither have the four-time champion Spurs, led by a group of veterans who have stood the test of time.

Young or old, it might not matter at this point.

Both teams are writing a new script in the playoffs, giving each other all they can handle in a thrilling Western Conference semifinal that has had more twists and turns than anybody ever predicted. The Warriors and Spurs head into a critical Game 5 tilt in San Antonio on Tuesday night tied at two apiece.

What started as a best-of-seven series is suddenly a best of three.

``It's a great place to be,' Jackson said at Golden State's practice facility in Oakland on Monday before the team boarded a flight to San Antonio. ``It's a great story.'

Differing in style and experience, the Warriors and Spurs share at least one common thread: each has reason to be confident and concerned before the next ball is tossed.

Both have blown late leads and lost a game in overtime that they felt they shouldn't. Each has won once on the other's home floor, and neither has won consecutive games.

``They've already won one here, so there is no reason to be comfortable here,' Spurs forward Tim Duncan said back at team headquarters in San Antonio. ``We're happy we have home court and we're happy to have a game (in Oakland), but there is no comfort level. We're 2-2. This next game is a huge game for both teams.'

Home court seemed so huge at the start of the series.

Maybe not anymore.

The Warriors hadn't won two games beyond the first round since 1977, when they pulled even with the Lakers in the conference semifinals through four games. Los Angeles won in seven.

Even with sharp-shooting Stephen Curry limping around on a gimpy left ankle, the upstart Warriors are beaming with confidence. Golden State's Game 2 win was its first in San Antonio since Feb. 14, 1997, ending a streak of 30 straight losses in the Alamo City, where the Spurs are tough for anybody to beat.

Game 6 will be in Oakland on Thursday night. If necessary, a decisive Game 7 would be back in San Antonio on Sunday. That means the Warriors have to do twice in two weeks what took them 16 years to do: win in San Antonio, which doesn't seem nearly the advantage it did days ago.

``It's almost like we played better there, and they played better here,' said Curry, who scored 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including 5 of 10 from 3-point range as a mostly stationary guard in Golden State's 97-87 comeback win in overtime Sunday. ``I don't know what to read into that, but I think the way that the game flowed (Sunday), kind of a low-scoring versus high-scoring early in the series, you just don't know what to expect.'

The Warriors wasted a 16-point lead in the final four minutes of regulation in Game 1, which the Spurs won in double overtime on Manu Ginobili's 3-pointer in the final seconds. After Golden State's nearly start-to-finish win in Game 2, San Antonio followed with a similar performance in its Game 3 victory. Then the Spurs blew an eight-point lead with five minutes to play in regulation in Game 4 when it seemed like the Warriors would wilt.

``There's not really any momentum in the playoffs,' said Warriors rookie Harrison Barnes, who scored a career-high 26 points to go with 10 rebounds in the game. ``Maybe it is youth. Maybe we just don't know any better.'

The Warriors will be on a stage far more familiar to the Spurs now.

This is the 11th time San Antonio will play a Game 5 of a best-of-seven series tied under coach Gregg Popovich. The Spurs are 7-3 in those series but have lost the last two, including a year ago to Oklahoma City in the Western Conference finals.

Golden State has outrebounded the Spurs in every game and outshot San Antonio in all but Game 3. But both teams are coming off a sloppy slugfest where both sides shot below 40 percent and nobody quite felt good about the way they played.

The Spurs, in particular, have struggled to consistently make shots most of the series. San Antonio also made only 14 of 25 free throws and was 7 for 27 on 3-pointers in Game 4.

``We've never shot this poorly for this many games in a stretch,' Popovich said. ``Hopefully it's an aberration to be that bad.'

Injuries remain a concern for both sides.

Tony Parker is still bothered by a bruised left calf, but he considers the injury more of an annoyance than a major hindrance. Curry has been far more hampered by what the Warriors have called a sprained left ankle, which he needed an anti-inflammatory injection for before Game 4 for the third time in these playoffs.

The Warriors have been resilient all season. They've already overcome forward Brandon Rush's season-ending left knee injury in the home opener this season, center Andrew Bogut's sore left ankle throughout the year and All-Star forward David Lee's hip injury in the first round against Denver.

This also is a franchise that had made the playoffs just twice since 1994 and went 23-43 last season and never expected to be in this position so soon. Even Jackson and general manager Bob Myers reminisced Monday about how the two were preparing for predraft workouts in Chicago at this time a year ago.

``It seemed crazy to think this day could really happen,' Jackson said. ``And we're not done.'

Inside the Paint - Tuesday

May 14, 2013

Bettors backing the favorites started the week on a good note last night as Miami and Memphis captured wins both straight up and against the spread. The underdogs started the second-round with a 6-2 record versus the number but the ‘chalk’ has produced a 5-2 record in the last seven games.

Will the favorites cash Tuesday?

Game 4 – New York at Indiana (TNT, 7:05 p.m.)

Indiana opened a 2-1 lead against New York after capturing an 82-71 victory at home as a five-point favorite. The Pacers didn’t play spectacular by any means but they received a big effort from center Roy Hibbert, who finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds, eight coming on the offensive end.

Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 21 points on 6-of-16 shooting but the team only shot 35 percent and some teammates were upset with the shot selections.

“I watched the tape myself and there's open looks,'' center Tyson Chandler said. “You have to sacrifice yourself sometimes for the betterment of the team. I think we need to do a better job of allowing the game to dictate who takes the shots. You get in a situation where you want to take over the game or you want to make a big shot where you have to stick to the game plan. Good teams win basketball games unless you're a great, great, great, great individual.''

If anybody on this Knicks squad can open his mouth, Chandler is one of them, considering he won a championship a couple years ago with the Dallas Mavericks. Will guys like Anthony and J.R. Smith follow suit and start playing team basketball?

Brian Edwards answered, “Indiana has dominated New York at home this year and has won all four postseason home games by double-digit margins. Nevertheless, I think the Knicks are certainly capable of winning Game 4 and pulling even in the series. What they have to have is Carmelo Anthony playing like he did in the regular season. His effort from the field in Game 3 isn't going to cut it. Anthony has to be the best player on the court and it would help if J.R. Smith would start providing some production from 3-point land. Since Smith's suspension in the Boston series, he has been held below his regular-season scoring average (18.1 points per game) for five straight games. During this five-game span, Smith is an abysmal 19-of-69 from the field (27.5%).”

As a team, New York has shot 43 percent against the Pacers in the first three games and that includes 33 percent from 3-point land. Bettors shouldn’t be surprised, especially if they watched the Knicks in the first-round against Boston. In that series, New York averaged 87.7 points per game and only shot 41 percent from the field. The difference against the Pacers is they have more offense than Boston, which has been the case in the first three games.

Indiana opened as a five-point favorite and the number has moved to 5 ˝-points. Smith and Kenyon Martin missed practice with the team due to an illness but are expected to play. Along with this pair, shooting guard Iman Shumpert (knee) is banged up and listed as ‘questionable’ for Tuesday. Amare Stoudemire did return Saturday but he only played nine minutes, finishing with seven points and two rebounds.

If you like New York to win Game 4, then perhaps you should look at the adjusted series price. You can back the Knicks at 2/1 odds (Bet $100 to win $200), which would leave you with plenty of hedge opportunities if they knot the series. Especially with New York holding home-court edge.

Total players are staring at number between 179 and 180. Saturday’s game was a clear-cut ‘under’ play but prior to that, Indiana did see its first three playoff games at home against Atlanta go ‘over.’

The pair will head to Madison Square Garden on Thursday for Game 5. If necessary, Game 6 will take place on Saturday from Indiana.

Game 5 – Golden State at San Antonio (TNT, 9:35 p.m.)

Backing a team off a loss isn’t always the smartest move but it’s been the trend in this series and based on the line tonight, San Antonio appears to be the lean on paper. With the series tied 2-2, oddsmakers opened the Spurs as eight-point home favorites for Game 5 but the number has dropped to seven at most betting shops.

Golden State was almost staring at elimination tonight but it rallied on Sunday and captured a 97-87 overtime win in Game 4. The Warriors erased an eight-point deficit in the final four minutes of regulation and outscored San Antonio 13-3 in the extra session as the Spurs missed their first nine shots in OT.
We asked Edwards what was more surprising, the Warriors rallying for the win or the Spurs collapsing on Sunday?

“I was a little surprised that San Antonio allowed a comfortable fourth-quarter lead to get away. Obviously, Golden State is capable of comebacks because Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are such explosive scorers, but it's rare that the Spurs let one like that get away. This is probably the most entertaining series we're going to see during the entire postseason. The next two, or three if necessary, games are must-watch television,” answered Edwards.

The Warriors backcourt have been a two-headed monster in this series but foul trouble for Thompson and a hobble ankle for Curry only saw the duo combine for 32 points on Sunday. Picking up the slack was rookie Harrison Barnes (26) and Jarrett Jack (24), who combined for 50 points. Curry is listed as ‘probable’ but he certainly won’t be 100 percent.

Looking at the Game 4 box score closer, San Antonio didn’t deserve to win the game and was fortunate to be ahead late in the fourth quarter. The Spurs were beat on the glass (65-51) and they only shot 36 percent from the field and an atrocious 56 percent (14-of-25) from the free throw line.

Experience definitely sides with head coach Gregg Popovich and San Antonio tonight. This will be the 11th instance when the Spurs will play a Game 5 in a best-of-seven series tied at 2-2 under Pop. The Spurs have gone 7-3 in the series but they have lost the last two times, which includes last year’s loss in the conference finals to Oklahoma City.

If you’re handicapping comes down to current form, then the Warriors are the play, especially with the points. Golden State is 12-1 versus the number in their last 13 games and that includes a 9-1 mark in the playoffs.

San Antonio went 35-6 in the regular season at home and is 3-1 in the postseason, the lone playoff loss coming in Game 2 to Golden State. That win for the Warriors snapped a 30-game losing streak at San Antonio. Golden State at a plus-270 price (Bet $100 to win $270) to win Game 5 on the road and you can take them to win the series at 5/2 (Bet $100 to win $250) odds.

After watching a double-overtime shootout in Game 1, gamblers playing the ‘over’ easily cashed tickets. Since then, the ‘under’ has cashed in the last three installments and the oddsmakers are expecting that trend to continue on Tuesday.

The totals in the first three games ranged from 203 to 205 while Sunday’s early start saw the number close at 197. For Game 5, the ‘over/under’ is hovering around 195 points, which does present some value.
Edwards said, “Those are big adjustments from 203 in Game 1 and 205 in Game 2. Therefore, the value seems to be with the 'over' on Tuesday.”

It should be mentioned that Golden State did lead the league in 3-point shooting percentage (40.3) and San Antonio was close behind in fourth (37.6%). However, the free throw shooting for San Antonio (70%) and Golden State (71%) has been well below average in this series.

Game 6 will be in played at Oracle Arena in Oakland on Thursday night. If necessary, a decisive Game 7 is slated for Sunday from San Antonio.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Tuesday, May 14

Carmelo Anthony was 6-16 in Game 3 after shooting 48-121 (39.7%) from floor in his first five games vs Indiana this year; JR Smith is 19-63 in four losses vs Pacers, 15-36 in three New York Ws- he played 25 minutes Saturday, might play less here. Stoudemire played nine minutes in Game 3, NY was even during that time. Nine of last 13 Knick games stayed under the total; 12 of last 17 Indy games went over. New York lost 81-76/125-91/82-71 in three visits to Conseco this year. Indiana won its last four home games, with all four wins by 11+ points.

Leads haven't been safe in Warrior-Spur series; SA came back from huge deficit to win Game 1, blew 80-72 lead with 4:40 left in Game 4, now its a best-of-3 series. To those who say Steph Curry shouldn't have played whole game in 1st game of series, Warriors were +24 in 81 minutes he played in Games 3-4, -24 in 20:00 he sat out. Warriors are 12-1 against spread in last 13 games overall; under is 6-4 in Golden State's playoff games. Spurs are 6-2 in playoffs, with five wins by double digits; home side is 6-2 in series games this year. Last three series tilts stayed under.

Tuesday's NBA playoff action: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs (-7, 195)

Best-of-seven series tied 2-2.

The Golden State Warriors are proving to be a tough opponent for the San Antonio Spurs. Just when it looked like the series was again turning in the Spurs’ favor, the Warriors took back the momentum and will be searching for a 3-2 lead when they visit San Antonio for Game 5 on Tuesday. Stephen Curry shook off another ankle sprain to score 22 points in Game 4 as Golden State claimed an overtime victory.

The Spurs are learning that Curry is not the only player to worry about on the other side, and Harrison Barnes and Jarrett Jack did the bulk of the damage for the Warriors down the stretch in Game 4. The bigger problem for San Antonio was a lack of execution on the offensive end, especially in the fourth quarter and overtime. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was dismayed by the team’s inability to hit free throws. “We didn’t make our free throws,” he told reporters. “And I don’t think I’ll be able to watch film and come up with an answer for you of why we missed our free throws.”

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Golden State fell behind in the first and second quarters of Game 4 while Andrew Bogut and Carl Landry were on the bench with foul trouble. The Warriors made the decision to match up with a big starting unit and Bogut and Landry combined to play 12 minutes in the first half. Bogut ended up playing 28 minutes and grabbing 18 rebounds while harassing Spurs forward Tim Duncan into a 7-for-22 shooting performance. Curry came through in the second half as well, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers during a key stretch in the third quarter and going 5-for-10 from beyond the arc in the contest. His three-point play in overtime helped seal the win. The star guard was a game-time decision due to his injured left ankle but ended up playing 39 minutes. Barnes picked up some slack with a career-high 26 points and attempted nearly as many field goals (26) as Curry and Klay Thompson combined (28).

ABOUT THE SPURS: San Antonio point guard Tony Parker is dealing with a calf injury and was less explosive in Game 4. His struggles to get into the lane left some of the perimeter shooters covered, and the Spurs went 7-for-27 from beyond the arc. Parker (5-for-6) was one of few reliable performers at the free-throw line, however, as San Antonio went 14-for-25 from the stripe. The Spurs missed two free throws and seven straight field goals to begin overtime after fumbling away an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter. “We put ourselves in position to win the game,” Duncan said, “and it’s frustrating because we feel like we gave it away.”

TRENDS:

* Warriors are 7-0 ATS in their last seven road games.
* Under is 5-1 in Warriors’ last six overall.
* Warriors are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Under is 4-1 in Spurs’ last five overall.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Warriors, who went 30 straight games between victories in San Antonio, will be looking for two straight in the city during Game 5.

2. Duncan has recorded three double-doubles in the four games but has yet to shoot 50 percent or better in the series.

3. Golden State F David Lee played eight minutes in Game 4, his most since suffering a torn hip flexor in Game 1 of the first round.

New York Knicks at Indiana Pacers (-5.5, 179.5)

Indiana leads series 2-1.

The Indiana Pacers fixed whatever had slowed them down in Game 2 and put together a strong defensive performance to take Game 3. The Pacers will be looking for a commanding 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals when they host the New York Knicks on Tuesday. The Knicks are dealing with some internal turmoil over shot selection while trying to work Amar’e Stoudemire back into the forward rotation.

New York center Tyson Chandler, who has had trouble guarding Indiana’s Roy Hibbert while also offering little on the offensive end in the series, was seemingly critical of Knicks shooters Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith. “I watched the tape myself and there’s open looks,” Chandler told reporters. “We have to be willing passers. You have to sacrifice yourself sometimes for the betterment of the team, for the betterment of your teammates. … I‘m not saying anyone is doing it maliciously. I think it’s moreso a situation, you want to take over the game or you want to make a big shot, where you have to just stick to the game plan.” The Pacers’ defense has forced New York to become a different offensive team by taking away the 3-point line.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE KNICKS: Chandler did not mention Smith or Anthony by name, but those are the two players taking the bulk of the shots and both have struggled. Anthony scored 16 points during a 30-2 run that sealed a Game 2 win but has otherwise had a hard time with Paul George and David West. The All-Star forward was held to 6-for-16 from the field in Game 3 and went 10-for-28 in Game 1, both losses. Smith, who has been dealing with an illness and missed his second straight day of practice on Monday, is 11-for-42 in the series and has not reached double figures in scoring in either of the last two contests. Chandler, who was named to the All-Defensive First Team on Monday, got into foul trouble in Game 3 and has averaged seven points and four rebounds in the series.

ABOUT THE PACERS: Indiana came out aggressively in Game 3 and quickly erased the sting of Game 2’s collapse. The Pacers’ commitment to the defensive end helped hold the Knicks to 35.2 percent from the field and limited them to 11 3-point attempts. Paul George (2-for-12) had more 3-point attempts all by himself and made up for a tough shooting day with some tight defense on Anthony and Smith. “That’s how we play Pacers basketball,” George said. “We just locked in, and it was just helping one another on the defensive end.” Indiana held a 53-40 rebounding edge in Game 3 as both Hibbert and West pulled down 12 boards.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Knicks are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 road games.
* Pacers are 6-13-1 ATS in their last 20 Conference Semifinals games.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Pacers are 4-0 at home in the postseason.

2. New York G Iman Shumpert (left knee) missed practice on Monday but is expected to play on Tuesday.

3. The teams combined for 32 turnovers and 46 fouls in Game 3

Wednesday's NBA Tips

May 14, 2013

**Bulls at Heat**

--Most betting shops opened Miami (73-17 straight up, 52-38 against the spread) as a 14-point favorite for Game 5 with a total of 182. As of early Tuesday night, there had not been much line movement with just a few spots moving to 14.5 and/or 182.5. Gamblers can take the Bulls to win outright for an enormous 15/1 payout (risk $100 to win $1,500). For first-half bets, the Heat is favored by 8.5 with a total of 92.

--Miami has won three straight games since dropping Game 1, including a pair of victories in the Windy City. The Heat won a 104-94 decision in Friday’s Game 3, but the game was much closer than the final score indicated. Miami backers collected a fortunate spread cover as an eight-point road favorite.

--In Monday’s Game 4, it was clear that the short-handed Bulls were running on an empty gas tank. The Heat took a 3-1 series advantage by dealing out an 88-65 clubbing as an eight-point road ‘chalk.’ The ‘under’ (185) was an easy winner. LeBron James was the catalyst for winners with 27 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Chris Bosh added 14 points, six boards and four blocked shots.

--Chicago (50-43 SU, 40-53 ATS) would not have advanced past Brooklyn without the stellar play of Nate Robinson, the diminutive reserve guard who had posted double-digit scoring efforts in seven consecutive games going into Game 4. However, the increased minutes have taken their toll on Robinson, who missed all 12 of his shots from the field and was held scoreless on Monday.

--Although he made only 3-of-14 shots from the field, Carlos Boozer led the Bulls with 14 points and 12 rebounds in Game 4. Jimmy Butler added 12 points, while Taj Gibson finished with 10 points and nine boards in only 21 minutes of playing time.

--Chicago’s Kirk Hinrich (calf), Luol Deng (illness) and Derrick Rose (knee) will remain ‘out’ for Game 5.

--Miami’s Dwyane Wade is ‘probable’ with soreness in his knee. Wade scored only six points on 3-of-10 shooting from the floor in Game 4.

--Miami has been a double-digit ‘chalk’ 26 times this year, compiling a mediocre 10-16 spread record.

--Chicago’s only two double-digit underdog situations this season came in Games 1 and 2 of this series at Miami. The Bulls won outright (93-86) in Game 1 before getting spanked by a 115-78 count in Game 2.

--In eight head-to-head meetings between the Heat and Bulls this season, totals have been an overall wash (4-4). Miami owns a 5-3 record both SU and ATS in those eight encounters.

--The ‘under’ is 48-44-1 overall for the Bulls, but they have seen the ‘over’ go 25-22 in their road assignments.

--The ‘over’ is 44-43-3 overall for the Heat, 25-18-2 in its home games.

--Tip-off on TNT is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Grizzlies at Thunder**

--Most books opened Oklahoma City (65-27 SU, 52-38-2 ATS) as a 3.5-point favorite with a total of 185. As of early Tuesday night, most books had adjusted OKC to a four-point ‘chalk’ with the total slightly increased to 185.5 at The Mirage and William Hill properties. Bettors can back the Grizzlies on the money line for a +160 return (risk $100 to win $160). OKC is favored by 2.5 with a total of 92.5 for first-half wagers.

--Memphis (63-29 SU, 55-35-2 ATS) took a 3-1 series lead by capturing a 103-97 overtime win as a 4.5-point home favorite in Monday’s Game 4 at The Grind House. The 200 combined points went ‘over’ the 185-point total, but it was a winner in regulation when the game was knotted at 94-94.

--Lionel Hollins’s squad trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half but was able to trim the deficit to eight by halftime. The Grizz outscored the Thunder 9-3 in the extra session. Mike Conley Jr. scored a team-high 24 points for the winners. Zach Randolph finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Marc Gasol tallied 23 points, 11 boards and six blocked shots. Tony Allen chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.

--In the Game 4 defeat, Kevin Durant scored a game-high 27 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists. Kevin Martin added 18 points from off the bench. Serge Ibaka had his best performance of the postseason with 17 points, 14 boards and three blocked shots. Reggie Jackson finished with 15 points and eight dimes.

--Memphis is 7-2 ATS in the last nine head-to-head meetings with OKC. The Grizz have taken the cash in all four games of this series, while totals have been a wash (2-2).

--Since getting thumped in Game 1 against the Clippers to open the postseason, the Grizzlies have covered the number in nine straight games.

--The ‘under’ is 53-38-1 overall for Memphis, 24-21-1 in its road assignments. The ‘over’ is 4-1 in Grizzlies’ five road assignments in the playoffs.

--The ‘under’ is 50-40-1 overall for the Thunder, 23-22-1 in its home games. The ‘under’ is on an 18-6 run in OKC’s last 24 games.

--Most books have the updated series price as Memphis -700 (risk $700 to win $100), Oklahoma City +500.

--TNT will have the telecast at around 9:40 p.m. Eastern.

NBA
Armadillo's Write-Up

Wednesday, May 15

Miami shot 50.7/51.4/60.0/50.0/48.5% in five games they beat Chicago this year, 46.2/48.1/39.7% in three losses. Miami won 15 of its last 16 games overall; they're 7-1 in playoffs, with no wins by less than 10 points. Team that led at halftime won all seven series games so far this season (one game was tied). Chicago has been mentally tough in playoffs, they compete like hell, but reality is their 3rd string PG starts now- he was 0-12 last game. Bulls scored 15-18-9 points in first quarter of Game 4; very hard to believe this series doesn't end tonight.

Memphis won seven of last eight games, losing by hoop in Game 1; last six series games were decided by six or less points. Durant was 10-27 in OT loss Monday, when OC squandered 17-point 1st half lead. Thunder PG Westbrook is out for this series, cannot forget that, so you have subs at a key position trying to bear starters. Oklahoma City hasn't made more than 43% of its shots from floor in any game this series. Memphis is 7-3-1 vs spread last 11 times they were an underdog. 18 of the last 24 Thunder games stayed under the total.

Wednesday's NBA playoff action: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat (-14.5, 182)

Miami leads series 3-1.

The Miami Heat are one win away from advancing to the Eastern Conference finals and can seal the deal Wednesday when they host the beleaguered Chicago Bulls in Game 5. Miami has won the last three games by an average of 23.3 points and routed the Bulls 88-65 in Monday’s game to take a 3-1 series lead. Chicago appeared worn down and shot a franchise playoff-low 25.7 percent from the field in a poor effort.

The 65 points were also a franchise postseason low for a squad that has been hindered by the absences of forward Luol Deng (complications from a spinal tap) and point guard Kirk Hinrich (calf). Former MVP Derrick Rose (knee) never opted to suit up despite being medically cleared two months ago, and Nate Robinson finally hit the wall with a 0-for-12 shooting effort in Game 4. “We have nothing to lose and everything to gain,” Robinson said after Game 4. “Everyone said we wouldn’t win a game. We got one. We believe we can win the series.” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra refuses to believe Chicago is spent and done mounting a threat. “You don’t want to give this team second life,” Spoelstra said. “They’re far too dangerous for that type of mentality because they just continue to grind and they compete and we know that. We respect that.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE BULLS: Chicago’s porous Game 4 showing bottomed out with a nine-point third quarter, the lowest output in the franchise’s playoff history. The starting five was a combined 11-of-50 from the field as the Bulls scoring average in the series dropped to 82.5. “We got a little discouraged and we can’t let that happen,” center Joakim Noah said afterward. “We did not play very well. We did not execute very well. We can’t put our heads down. We know we can compete with this team.” Veteran guard Richard Hamilton saw his first action in the series with 11 points in 22 minutes. Hamilton had been banished deep on the bench despite all the injuries.

ABOUT THE HEAT: Miami’s dominance in the series has been done with minimal contributions from standout guard Dwyane Wade. A badly bruised right knee has severely diminished Wade’s ability to play at a high level and he is averaging only 11.3 points after scoring just six points on 3-of-10 shooting in Game 4. “It’s just frustrating at times, but just try to do what you can,” Wade said. “Sometimes it feels good, sometimes it doesn’t. You can’t predict it.” Wade’s condition is one of the reasons why the Heat would like to finish the series Wednesday and give Wade time to rest the knee while awaiting the start of the conference finals.

TRENDS:

* Bulls are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
* Heat are 17-5 ATS in their last 22 games overall.
* Under is 10-1 in Bulls last 11 games following a double-digit loss at home.
* Bulls are 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Heat have won each of their last five closeout playoff games by double digits.

2. Chicago’s 65 points in Game 4 were the second fewest Miami has allowed in a playoff game.

3. Miami F LeBron James is averaging 23.8 points, 7.8 assists, seven rebounds and 2.3 steals in the series.

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder (-4, 185)

Memphis leads series 3-1.

The Memphis Grizzlies have never been to the Western Conference finals. Memphis can get there for the first time if it can defeat the host Oklahoma City Thunder in Wednesday’s Game 5 of their conference semifinal series. The Grizzlies have won three straight games after a Game 1 loss while taking advantage of an Oklahoma City squad missing Russell Westbrook. The Thunder lost three consecutive games just once during the regular season and never lost four straight.

Forward Kevin Durant has tried to carry the Thunder without Westbrook (knee) and he will need three more yeoman efforts if Oklahoma City is to overcome its deficit. “One thing about Kevin, he’s going to come back and give everything he has,” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. “He’s not an excuse guy. He’s not going to blame anything on nobody, other than put the pressure on himself to perform.” Memphis lost a seven-game series to the Thunder two seasons ago and isn’t about to let up with Oklahoma City on the brink of elimination. The Grizzlies overcame a 17-point deficit to win Game 4 in overtime. “We are a team that just plays hard and doesn’t quit,” Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said afterward. “We scratch, we claw.”

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES: Center Marc Gasol was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year last month but somehow only earned a second-team spot on the All-Defensive team selected by the NBA coaches that was released Monday. Gasol seemed to draw motivation from the snub by blocking six shots to go with 23 points and 11 rebounds in Game 4. Gasol is in the midst of an outstanding series, scoring 20 or more points in all four games while averaging 21.8 points and 8.8 rebounds. Power forward Zach Randolph had his best game of the series with 23 points and 12 rebounds and the Grizzlies are hard to beat when Randolph and Gasol both get double-doubles in the same game. Point guard Mike Conley is averaging 19.3 points but has made just one-third of his shots in three of the four games.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: Power forward Serge Ibaka is coming off his best game of the series and has two straight double-doubles after shooting 6-for-22 over the first two games. Ibaka had 17 points and 14 rebounds in Game 4 to help take some scoring pressure off Durant. “We need his scoring, we need his shooting and I thought this last game was good,” Brooks said. “Hopefully we can get it again.” Durant is averaging 30.8 points and 11 rebounds in the series but was just 10-for-27 in Monday’s loss. Durant faded down the stretch and Derek Fisher’s 3-pointer was Oklahoma City’s lone points of the overtime.

TRENDS:

* Grizzlies are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games.
* Thunder are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games.
* Under is 21-7-2 in Thunder last 30 overall.
* Road team is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Oklahoma City averaged 105.7 points during the regular season but is averaging just 91 in this series.

2. Memphis has won an NBA-leading 11 games when trailing by at least 17 points since the start of the 2009-10 campaign.

3. Thunder PG Reggie Jackson is averaging 13.3 points in the series as Westbrook’s replacement in the starting lineup.
