Preview: Canadiens (0-0) at Senators (0-0)

Date: May 07, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

OTTAWA (AP) - The Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators are developing quite a rivalry this postseason.

The Senators beat the Canadiens 6-1 on Sunday night in a fight-filled, emotional game. The teams combined for 236 penalty minutes and nine players were given a game misconduct.

Ottawa has a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-seven quarterfinal series. Game 4 is Tuesday night.

On Monday players from both sides downplayed the events of the game, saying it's just part of playoff hockey and to be expected at this time of year.

The intensity could ratchet up again Tuesday night.

``This is fun,' Ottawa forward Kyle Turris said. ``It's a great atmosphere, real fun and I don't know if you would call it a hatred on the ice, but it's lots of fun.'

Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban agreed with Turris.

``This is playoffs, this is exciting,' Subban said. ``We knew this being an all-Canadian series that it was going to be a lot of emotion and intensity involved and it's been great so far.'

Turris was targeted by a number of Montreal players on Sunday. He fought Subban, and as the final buzzer sounded Montreal defenseman Josh Gorges fired a puck at Turris.

``Taking a slap shot at a guy at the end of the game isn't something that's really necessary if you ask me,' Turris said. ``I don't think he was trying to get a shot on net.'

While neither team expects things to escalate to the same level in Game 4, it's clear the Senators want to continue to play a physical style while Montreal would prefer to wear Ottawa down with its speed.

``Last night was one game and (Tuesday) will be a totally different one,' Ottawa defenseman Erik Karlsson said. ``They want to come out and win the game, they don't want to win the fights and that's what we have to expect. We know we're going to have to be even better to win Game 4.'

The Canadiens say they need to focus on their own style if they want to win the series.

``We have to get back to playing our game,' Subban said. ``We have to get back to doing the things that make us successful and right now we have a lot of things to play for. We have to make sure that we're doing the right things and we'll be ready for tomorrow.'

Emotion will be a key factor for both teams, but in the end it's likely the team that manages to control its emotions best will have the advantage.

``You want to play on the edge and be physical and play our in-your-face game, hard forechecking, but you have to be smart at the same time,' Montreal forward Colby Armstrong said. ``We took some chippy penalties last game, not in the third, but even before that in the first and second and that was uncharacteristic for our group.'

Ottawa's Eric Gryba, who served a two-game suspension for a hit on Lars Eller in Game 1, could be back in the lineup for Tuesday's game.

While he could be the target of some form of retaliation, the Senators aren't concerning themselves with it.

``I think and I hope that they want to play hockey,' Karlsson said. ``I think they want to win the game and if they throw a couple of extra hits on him it's a part of the game and I don't think it's going to affect our game in any way. We want to come out and be a better team than we were (Sunday).

``I think they're going to dig deep and really try to maintain their focus and I think they want to prove to themselves and everyone else they're still a good hockey team.'

Canadiens coach Michel Therrien admitted his team needs to concentrate on playing hockey and not get caught up by emotion.

Therrien didn't go so far as to criticize the officiating, but he felt both rookie forward Brendan Gallagher and Subban were abused at times during the game which in turn led to them taking penalties as they attempted to defend themselves.

``When Brendan Gallagher drops the gloves it's because he was abused. When P.K. Subban drops the gloves it's because he was abused,' Therrien said. ``There comes a time when a player makes his own law because he's tired and we saw a fair amount of that (Sunday).'

Therrien believes his team will have no trouble focusing on the task at hand Tuesday.

``We have to make sure we play a solid game,' he said. ``We played two solid games in Montreal, I really liked the way we played and (Sunday) was a bad game for us and the Senators played a good game and deserved to win.

``We've proven in the past that we're capable of bouncing back. We have to bounce back (Tuesday).'

Senators coach Paul MacLean says he has made it clear to his team that they haven't accomplished anything yet and need to keep their focus on the next game.

``The hardest part is yet to come,' he said. ``We talked about that (Tuesday) is going to be even harder. That's what keeps us on an even keel is that we understand it's going to be hard.'

Notes: Ottawa D Patrick Wiercioch will not be available for Tuesday's game as he has a lower body injury. ... Ottawa F Jean-Gabriel Pageau was still reveling in the effects of scoring a hat trick in Sunday's game and said among the numerous messages he received was one from Philadelphia's Daniel Briere, a role model of Pageau's growing up. ... Montreal F David Desharnais said he needs to be much better in this series. He has just one assist and zero shots on goal. ... Gallagher, who was celebrating his 21st birthday Monday, was selected a finalist for the Calder Trophy. ... Therien said his unfavorable opinion of MacLean calling a timeout with 17 seconds left in Game 3 hasn't changed, even after hearing MacLean's reason for doing so.

Preview: Blackhawks (0-0) at Wild (0-0)

Date: May 07, 2013 9:30 PM EDT

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Trying to keep up with the Chicago Blackhawks would be unwise for the Minnesota Wild.

Running into them over and over and over again, as Game 3 of this Western Conference quarterfinal matchup proved, is probably their best bet.

After a rough-and-tumble effort in an overtime victory, the Wild were bracing for the inevitable pushback from the top-seeded Blackhawks in Game 4 on Tuesday.

``A lot of teams respond well after losses, and that's obviously a tough loss for them. They'll be ready to go,' said Minnesota rookie Jason Zucker, who got the winning goal in the 3-2 decision Sunday that cut Chicago's series lead to 2-1.

The Blackhawks acknowledged without prompting they needed to bring more intensity. But whether they're actually focusing on bruising and banging more with the Wild, well, that depended on who was talking after practice on Monday.

``They played like they had to win the game,' Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said, ``and we didn't. We wanted to make sure we had more urgency to our game.'

Yes, but teams aren't successful in the spring if they change their style too much.

``Sometimes if you're worried about bringing too much physicality and intensity then you're not worried about doing the things we did to score a lot of goals this year,' star Patrick Kane said.

Defenseman Brent Seabrook blamed himself for not playing ``very physical,' the way games usually go in May. But he stopped short of prodding his team to get into a checking challenge with the Wild.

``I don't think we need to give them any kind of response. We have to play our game, and we have to play the way that we know we can play,' Seabrook said.

That means staying in the offensive zone and keeping the puck as much as possible and relying on superior depth to wear down the Wild.

``We're a fast team, and we need to use that to our advantage,' rookie Brandon Saad said.

The Blackhawks have only one goal, by Marian Hossa, from their first line. Saad and captain Jonathan Toews have been shut out. But in the postseason, games are always tighter. The Wild have only one goal, by Zach Parise, from their top group, too.

Gritty usually trumps pretty.

The Blackhawks are clearly missing the tenacity and playoff touch of center Dave Bolland, who's been practicing but was declared out for Game 4 because of a lingering lower-body injury. Quenneville was even asked whether enforcer Daniel Carcillo would be inserted on the fourth line for some extra energy, much like the Wild did with Stephane Veilleux on Sunday.

``He could play,' Quenneville said.

And if not?

``He might not,' the coach said, grinning slightly.

Yes, postseason gamesmanship was on full display. Wild coach Mike Yeo, asked if fourth line forward Mike Rupp was hurt, coyly declined to answer whether his absence from practice was for rest or due to injury. One reporter reminded the coach that Rupp played only four shifts, totaling 2:37 of ice time, in Game 3.

``They were hard shifts,' Yeo said, deadpanning.

The veteran forward the Wild acquired for more punch for the playoffs, Jason Pominville, hasn't participated in two weeks since taking an elbow to the chin in a game against Los Angeles. Pominville was back at practice Monday, but Yeo left his status vague too.

The 21-year-old Zucker, whose uneven, undisciplined play prompted the Wild to keep him at their AHL affiliate much of the year, was recalled from Houston right before the final regular season game. Aside from 36-year-old center Matt Cullen, Zucker is one of the only forwards the Wild have with the speed to match the Blackhawks. He showed that in Game 1 when his overtime shot hit the crossbar, an inch that's the difference now in the lead of this series.

But after his blind, bad-angle shot got past goalie Corey Crawford in Game 3, Zucker has been more interested in talking about the importance of physical play than his scoring touch or skating ability.

``Obviously that's a big part of our game, so we had to come out strong. We have a lot of guys that hit all night and every night, so we had to keep that going,' Zucker said.

The Blackhawks lamented their lack of puck possession in Game 3, and the Wild were quick to point out that their extra effort along the boards and in the corners was the key to them controlling the game. They realized, too, that they're only one-fourth of the way toward finishing an upset of the Stanley Cup favorite Blackhawks. This, after all, is a best of seven.

``Guys are going about their business. That's the nature of the playoffs. You have to put that behind you pretty quick,' Cullen said. ``You can't be in here running around like an idiot because you won a game. We won one game.'

Preview: Canucks (0-0) at Sharks (0-0)

Date: May 07, 2013 10:00 PM EDT

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - San Jose Sharks coach Todd McLellan sees no need to remind his team of the precariousness of a 3-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Sharks nearly squandered that advantage the last time they held it, needing the full seven games to eliminate Detroit in the second round two years ago.

With many of the same core players still around, McLellan is content to let past experience serve as the teaching tool heading into Game 4 of the series on Tuesday night at the Shark Tank.

``We just left it alone,' McLellan said. ``Our group is mature enough. They should know what's coming, what to expect and how to respond.'

Given the comments coming out of the dressing room on Monday, it's clear McLellan is correct. Players echoed the mantra that the fourth win in a series is always the hardest and insisted nothing had been won yet despite a decisive 5-2 win in Game 3 that followed two narrow victories in Vancouver.

``I was here when we went through that and we let a team back into a series,' center Logan Couture said. ``Obviously it went seven games. We were fortunate to win it. We let them back in. That's something we don't want to do. We want to put them away in Game 4.'

There's one big difference from that series two years ago when the Sharks eked out three straight one-goal wins to build their cushion over the Red Wings. Their edge over the Canucks so far has been more convincing, especially in the 5-2 thrashing on Sunday.

The power play clicked to tie a franchise record with three goals, the defense kept pressure off goaltender Antti Niemi and the Sharks showed discipline to stay out of the penalty box even when the game got testy.

The Canucks feel there is another factor: embellishment.

Defenseman Kevin Bieksa singled out Couture and Sharks captain Joe Thornton for exaggerating contact to draw penalties. Bieksa said Couture flails every time he is touched and blamed Thornton for taking off his glove and shaking his wrist to draw a slashing penalty on Dan Hamhuis that led to a 5-on-3 goal that opened the scoring Sunday.

``Those are two Canadian guys that are supposed to be playing the game with integrity,' Bieksa said. ``Maybe our team has to do more of that. Maybe we have to sell calls.'

The Canucks have earned quite a reputation for embellishment themselves over the years with Ryan Kesler and Alex Burrows considered two of the main violators.

In fact, Kesler crumbled to the ice grabbing his throat after taking a high stick from Patrick Marleau on the helmet strap Sunday. Kesler quickly recovered and stayed in the game for the ensuing power play.

The Sharks had eight power plays in Game 3, while Vancouver got only two chances with the man advantage.

``That's always something we talk about especially when they have a potent power play like they have,' Marleau said. ``At playoff time you have to try to stay disciplined and not let your emotions get the better of you sometimes after the whistle with pushing and shoving.'

The talk of diving may have been a tactic to divert the conversation from Vancouver's brutal recent playoff past.

After beating the Sharks in the Western Conference finals and taking a 3-2 lead in the Stanley Cup finals over Boston two years ago, the Canucks have been downright abysmal in the postseason.

Vancouver has lost nine of its past 10 playoff games, having also fallen behind 3-0 in the opening round a year ago to Los Angeles before being eliminated in five games.

The Canucks have 15 goals in that span as a normally potent offense led by the Sedin twins has disappeared of late in the postseason.

``There's some good chances there 5-on-5,' coach Alain Vigneault said. ``So far we haven't been able to put the puck in the net. I have to believe that for one game we can do it.'

The other big question for the Canucks comes in goal where former starter Roberto Luongo played well the first two games in place of the injured Cory Schneider before Vigneault made a switch from Game 3.

Schneider allowed five goals on 28 shots and was replaced after giving up three in the opening 4:07 of the third period.

Luongo stopped all 10 shots he faced in relief and has a .915 save percentage in this series.

Vigneault said he has made a decision about his starter for Tuesday, but won't announce it until after he tells the players.

The focus now is on figuring out how to beat the Sharks four straight times after losing the first six meetings between the teams this season.

``I believe we can win one game,' Vigneault said. ``We haven't beaten the Sharks once this year. I believe we can do it tomorrow.'

Tuesday's NHL playoff action: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders (+146, 6)

Pittsburgh leads series 2-1.

Sidney Crosby hasn't missed a beat since returning from a little over a month's absence with a broken jaw. After collecting two goals and three assists in two contests, Crosby and the top-seeded Pittsburgh Penguins look to push the host New York Islanders to the brink of elimination on Tuesday in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference first-round series. The captain set up three goals in Game 3 on Saturday afternoon - including Chris Kunitz's power-play tally in overtime - as Pittsburgh seized a 2-1 advantage in the series.

The Islanders would be wise to limit the damage in the first period and do their best to tame the Penguins' potent power play. Pittsburgh has scored an NHL-best eight goals in the opening session, while its 3-for-5 effort with the man advantage in Game 3 proved too big of a mountain to overcome. "Our penalty kill has to be better. The best way to do that is to stay out of the box," New York defenseman Andrew MacDonald said. "Those (penalties) can end up killing us."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, ROOT Sports (Pittsburgh), MSG Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS: After being acquired prior to the trade deadline, Jarome Iginla certainly is paying dividends with his new team. The veteran, who recorded his 29th career postseason goal in Game 3, has seven points in his last four contests dating back to a two-assist effort versus Carolina on April 27. After being sidelined with lower-body injuries, defenseman Brooks Orpik and James Neal participated in the team's optional practice on Monday.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS: Kyle Okposo has provided quite the punch in this series - and we're not just talking about the one he landed on Pittsburgh defenseman Matt Niskanen in Game 2. The former first-round pick went on to score the winning tally in that contest before netting the first short-handed goal of his career on Saturday. "He's been a horse for us all season," center Josh Bailey said of Okposo. "But I think now you're really seeing the determination that he has and that he plays with. Lots of us have fed off that."

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings in New York.
* Penguins are 6-1 in the last seven meetings in New York.
* Over is 7-3-1 in the last 11 meetings.
* Penguins are 36-16 in the last 52 meetings.

OVERTIME:

1. Pittsburgh is 6-for-13 on the power play in the series, while New York is just 1-for-11.

2. The Islanders are vying to win their first home playoff game since 2002.

3. The Penguins recorded 4-2 victories in both regular-season tilts on Long Island.

Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators (-140, 5)

Ottawa leads series 2-1.

Three games does a bitter rivalry make - at least when it comes to the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens. The Eastern Conference first-round series between the Canadian neighbors has quickly devolved into a brawl-filled, vitriol-laced hate fest following a brutal Game 3 in which the seventh-seeded Senators pummeled Montreal physically and on the scoreboard. Ottawa can take a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series when it hosts the Canadiens in Tuesday's Game 4.

The teams had never met in the postseason, but they combined for 236 penalty minutes and nine players received game misconducts in the Senators' 6-1 rout Sunday - a game Ottawa led by only 2-1 after two periods before the game got out of hand in every aspect. There were 14 fighting majors in the third period alone and the sniping extended to behind both benches. Montreal coach Michel Therrien was incensed that the Senators called timeout with only 17 seconds left in the game, calling the move "classless" and accusing counterpart Paul MacLean of trying to "humiliate" his team. MacLean claimed he was "forced to protect" his players. “It got a little bit stupid in the end, but that’s hockey,” MacLean said.

TV: 7 p.m. CNBC, CBC

ABOUT THE CANADIENS: Montreal captain Brian Gionta, as well as regular-season leading scorer Max Pacioretty, returned to the lineup Sunday after one-game injury absences. Gionta had a glittering chance to get his team back in the game when he broke in alone early in the third period, but his backhander was denied by Senators goaltender Craig Anderson. "It was definitely the turning point of the game and it spiraled out of control from there,” Gionta said. Canadiens netminder Carey Price had his second poor performance of the series, allowing the six goals on 30 shots. That continued a theme from the regular season that has seen Price hold the opposition under three goals only four times in his last 13 appearances.

ABOUT THE SENATORS: Rookie Jean-Gabriel Pageau was a most unlikely hero in Game 3, registering his first career hat trick. Pageau delivered a memorable go-ahead goal on a shot while his face was bloodied and he lost a tooth on a high stick from Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban. "I might put it under my pillow and see what happens," Pageau quipped of the knocked-out tooth. He was not called up from Ottawa's AHL affiliate until last month and entered the series with only nine NHL games on his resume. Still, Pageau is as responsible for this series as any player, scoring the game-winning goal in the regular-season finale vs. Boston - a win that allowed Montreal to claim the No. 2 seed and set up the matchup with the Senators.

TRENDS:

* Home team is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.
* Canadiens are 0-4 in the last four meetings in Ottawa.
* Over is 8-3-1 in Canadiens' last 12 overall.
* Under is 34-13-10 in Senators' last 57 overall.

OVERTIME:

1. Senators D Eric Gryba, who was suspended two games for his jarring hit on Lars Eller in Game 1, is eligible to return Tuesday. He is expected to take the place of D Patrick Wiercioch, who was hurt in Game 3.

2. Canadiens RW Brendan Gallagher was among three players named as finalists for the Calder Trophy that goes to the league's top rookie. Gallagher scored 15 goals in the regular season and has two goals in the playoffs.

3. Ottawa G Craig Anderson has turned aside 112 of 118 shots for a save percentage of .949, as compared to Price's .905.

Chicago Blackhawks at Minnesota Wild (+156, 5)

The Minnesota Wild looked like a different team at home in Game 3, outshooting the top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks for the first time in their Western Conference first-round series to win their first postseason game in five years. The eighth-seeded Wild host Game 4 on Tuesday hoping to even the series at two games apiece. Rookie Jason Zucker’s shot from a sharp angle 2:15 into overtime gave Minnesota a 3-2 victory on Sunday after falling twice at Chicago: 5-2 in Game 2 and 2-1 in overtime in Game 1. The Blackhawks held a 85-55 shot advantage through the first two games, but the Wild used their relentless forecheck and home-ice energy to generate 37 shots on Sunday and keep the series within their grasp.

Chicago forward Patrick Kane set up both goals by the Blackhawks in Game 3 and leads the series with five points - all assists. Minnesota netminder Josh Harding turned aside 25 shots to earn his first career playoff victory on Sunday and will start Game 4 with Niklas Backstrom still ailing from an injury suffered while warming up for Game 1. Corey Crawford has started all three games for Chicago and was absent from the Blackhawks’ practice on Monday in order to rest for Tuesday’s contest. Chicago is the only team with a power-play goal in the series, going 1-for-9 with the man advantage, while Minnesota has not scored in nine opportunities. The Blackhawks also got a short-handed goal from Michael Frolik, suggesting their special teams might be the difference in a tense Game 4 against the Wild.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, CBC, RDS2, NBCSN, Comcast Sportsnet Chicago, Fox Sports North

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: Rookie Brandon Saad was named as one of three finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy on Monday along with Jonathan Huberdeau of the Florida Panthers and Brendan Gallagher of the Montreal Canadiens. Saad recorded 10 goals and 27 points and a plus-17 rating while playing most of the season on Chicago’s top line with Marian Hossa and captain Jonathan Toews. “There’s a lot of great rookies this year that had a good season so it’s definitely an honor and I’m very excited,” Saad told reporters following practice on Monday. The 20-year-old has yet to record a point in the series and finished minus-2 in Game 3. Ray Emery and Dave Bolland practiced with the team on Monday but neither will be in the lineup on Tuesday due to lower-body injuries.

ABOUT THE WILD: Pierre-Marc Bouchard, who registered his first two points of the series with a goal and an assist on Sunday, was also instrumental in Minnesota’s last playoff victory on April 14, 2008, when he scored the winning goal in overtime against the Colorado Avalanche. Bouchard is one of five Wild players from that game who is still with the team, along with goaltenders Harding and Backstrom, captain Mikko Koivu and Stephane Veilleux, who was recalled from the AHL on Sunday and has not played an NHL game since April 7, 2012. Koivu has yet to record a point in the series and is minus-3 despite averaging over 20 minutes time on ice per game and firing six shots. Zach Parise, who leads the team with 12 shots, scored his first of the postseason to give Minnesota a 2-1 lead early in the third period of Sunday’s victory.

TRENDS:

* Under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings in Minnesota.
* Home team is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
* Blackhawks are 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Under is 6-0-1 in Blackhawks' last 7 road games.

OVERTIME:

1. Chicago’s last three losses have all come on the road.

2. The Blackhawks lost consecutive games just four times during the regular season.

3. Each of Minnesota’s last three playoff victories have been 3-2 overtime decisions.

Vancouver Canucks at San Jose Sharks (-163, 5)

San Jose leads series 3-0.

The sixth-seeded San Jose Sharks can earn themselves a trip to the second round Tuesday as they look to complete a sweep of their Western Conference first-round series when they host the Northwest Division champion Vancouver Canucks. San Jose, which never has swept a playoff series, walked into Rogers Arena and scored twice in the third period to post a 3-1 victory in Game 1 and steal home-ice advantage from third-seeded Vancouver. The Sharks pulled out a 3-2 win in Game 2 as Patrick Marleau tied the contest with 56 seconds remaining in the third session and former Canuck Raffi Torres tallied at 5:31 of overtime.

Vancouver switched goaltenders for Game 3, going from Roberto Luongo to Cory Schneider with the hope of turning the series around. The move backfired early in the third period as San Jose scored three goals in a 2:27 span to turn a close game into a rout. Schneider, who was returning from an undisclosed injury that sidelined him for four contests, was pulled after allowing five goals on 28 shots.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, CNBC, TSN, RDS, CSN California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE CANUCKS: Coach Alain Vigneault has a tough decision on his hands regarding his starting goaltender for Game 4. During his postgame press conference, Vigneault admitted that Luongo was not the reason the Canucks lost the first two games. Considering Schneider struggled in his return while Luongo stopped all 10 shots he faced in relief, the latter could be back between the pipes Tuesday. Daniel Sedin recorded his 66th career postseason point with an assist on Sunday, tying him with Pavel Bure for third place on the franchise list. The Canucks found themselves short-handed eight times and paid the price as San Jose scored three power-play goals. "I don't know what happened except that we spent way too much time in the penalty box," captain Henrik Sedin said. "We have to stay calm. It's really just a few small things that are costing us, like taking the extra penalty."

ABOUT THE SHARKS: Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski were the offensive stars on Sunday, combining for four goals and three assists. Couture, who scored twice and set up two tallies, became the fourth player in franchise history to register four points in a playoff game. He joined Sergei Makarov (1994), Mike Ricci (1999) and Jeremy Roenick (2008). Couture also is the fourth Shark to score two power-play goals in a postseason game and the first to record two in the same period. Marleau also scored Sunday, giving him a goal in each game of the series. Couture and Marleau tallied nine seconds apart, falling one second shy of the record for the fastest two goals in franchise playoff history. John MacLean and Ron Sutter scored eight seconds apart against the Dallas Stars in 1998.

TRENDS:

* Under is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings in San Jose.
* Under is 6-2-3 in the last 11 meetings.
* Canucks are 0-6 in the last six meetings.
* Under is 15-6-3 in Canucks last 24 overall.

OVERTIME:

1. Including the regular season, San Jose is 6-0-0 against Vancouver in 2013.

2. Vancouver C Ryan Kesler won 13-of-24 faceoffs in Game 3. The rest of the Canucks combined to win 17-of-47 draws.

3. Sharks D Marc-Edouard Vlasic will play in his 72nd career postseason game Tuesday, giving him sole possession of first place on the franchise list among blue-liners. He tied Mike Rathje for the top spot on Sunday

Preview: Bruins (0-0) at Maple Leafs (0-0)

Date: May 08, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

TORONTO (AP) - The day after a punishing playoff game that featured 99 hits, burly Maple Leafs defenseman Mark Fraser was feeling it.

Not that he was complaining. Still it had to hurt a little more, given that Boston won Monday night's game 5-2 to regain the upper hand in the series. The Bruins lead 2-1 going into Game 4 Wednesday night.

Despite the pain, the 26-year-old Fraser was in a good mood at Tuesday's skate.

``Sometimes you might feel a bump or a bruise and you're not even sure how you got it,' the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder said after practice.

After a night when Boston outhit Toronto 51-49, Fraser was asked if he leapt out of bed Tuesday to head to the rink.

``Actually, today I did,' he said with a grin. ``A big part of that has been the significant change of the weather, the sunshine.'

For Toronto coach Randy Carlyle, the summer-like day was a welcome reminder to his players that all is not lost, despite a second defeat in three games in their first playoff experience since 2004.

``I used to say everybody's in doom and gloom, but the sun did come up today,' the coach said. ``It was sunny out there.

``That would be the way we'd want to flush things and turn the page on it. Today's a new day. Let's start. Let's build. Let's focus. All those things are things that we try to provide.'

Carlyle and his coaching staff got a helping hand Tuesday when the clocks in the dressing room malfunctioned. They were six minutes off, meaning a group of Leafs arrived on the ice late for practice. They were greeted with some good-natured derision from teammates who made it on time.

``You can't change what happened and that can't really be your focus on what today brought,' Carlyle said. ``Today was about flushing what happened last night, recognizing what happened and then going into the preparation mode of tomorrow.

``Our focus has to be on what we can improve on for tomorrow night's game. Can we improve on our turnovers? Can we improve on the out-and-out turnovers that led to their goals? Can we improve on our execution with the puck?

``Those are all the little things that we have to focus on and that's part of the process versus the result. Any mental coach will tell you that you can't labor on the result being the ultimate. It's the process that you have to live in your mind that helps you get ready for it.'

Carlyle has managed to keep his team poised off the ice in the midst of a playoff-starved, hockey-mad city. On the ice, he is bidding to mold a squad woefully short on playoff experience - and one facing a playoff-savvy Bruins team that won the Stanley Cup two years ago.

In the wake of a loss in which the Leafs were punished for mistakes, Carlyle looked to the positives as he tried to rebuild his team's confidence.

``What did we do well? That's what we're trying to pick out,' Carlyle said. ``We're trying to focus on the things that we did well that gave us a chance in the hockey game.'

Carlyle's morning message to his squad was repeated by his players later in the day.

``For the most part we played a pretty good game,' said winger Joffrey Lupul, an influential voice in the locker room. ``We created a lot of chances. We definitely worked hard.

``We've just got to eliminate some of those mistakes.'

That includes losing faceoffs; Carlyle even wondered why his centers kept getting thrown out of the faceoff circles Monday night.

Boston coach Claude Julien, whose team excels at faceoffs, knew exactly what Carlyle was doing.

``When you lobby for something, it's because you're looking for a bit of a break next game,' he said. ``And that's what Randy is doing right now.

``It's going to be interesting to see whether the referees and the linesmen just do their job next game and not worry about who's crying wolf.'

Boston's Patrice Bergeron led the league in faceoff wins during the regular season, 62.1 percent. David Krejci ranked 15th.

One person Carlyle doesn't have to convince of the Leafs' abilities as a team is Julien.

``We know that we're in for a dogfight and the next game's going to be a challenge,' Julien said. ``They know they can play with us and they've proven it.'

Preview: Capitals (0-0) at Rangers (0-0)

Date: May 08, 2013 7:30 PM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Rangers had such a simple plan when they got home from Washington in an 0-2 hole against the Capitals: find a way to get one win.

It worked so well in a hard-fought 4-3 victory on Monday night that they are heading into Wednesday's Game 4 at Madison Square Garden with the very same objective.

``All we were focused on is doing whatever we could to try to win a game,' Rangers coach John Tortorella said. ``We did that, and now we need to try to win one more game, and we'll see what happens from there.'

While the Capitals stayed off the ice on Tuesday to recover, the Rangers held a full practice. They were without forward Rick Nash, who was given a ``maintenance day,' and Darroll Powe, who was injured on Monday and is unlikely to play in Game 4.

If the Rangers can win again Wednesday, they will assure themselves of hosting Game 6 after a game in between in Washington on Friday.

After netting only one goal in the two road losses - including a 1-0 overtime defeat in Game 2 - the Rangers' offense broke out. New York even scored a power-play goal and added another tally just as another advantage ended.

``We didn't break,' said Rangers forward Derick Brassard, who had a goal and two assists on Monday. ``I think our bunch was really positive. Guys were really confident that we tried to find a way to win the game. At the end of the game our top line came out strong for us. They were competing hard all game. They came out huge for us to get that goal.

That winner was scored by Derek Stepan, who deflected a pass from Nash in behind goalie Braden Holtby with 6:25 left in regulation. It was the Rangers' second tiebreaking goal of the third period.

It never would've happened if defenseman Ryan McDonagh hadn't deftly kept the puck in the Washington end just before it was about to leave the zone at the left point. McDonagh moved the puck to Mats Zuccarello, who got it to Nash for the winning play.

The moment was sweet redemption for the 23-year-old McDonagh, whose delay-of-game penalty when he inadvertently shot the puck out of play led directly to Mike Green's overtime goal in Game 2 on Saturday.

``He makes a mistake, and to me that's not a mistake, it's just happenstance,' Tortorella said of the Game 2 penalty. ``It never bothers him. It killed him after the game, but that's what, at such a young age, that he has. He is able to recover and go out and play. It doesn't surprise me at all how he handled himself.'

McDonagh also has the daunting task of trying to keep top Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin in check. Ovechkin had no points while logging over 22 minutes of ice time in Game 3.

Ovechkin wasn't one of the few players the Capitals made available to reporters at the team hotel on Tuesday, but coach Adam Oates addressed comments from McDonagh that Ovechkin seemed tired before the Rangers scored the winning goal.

``I don't think he was tired,' Oates said. ``I think that I didn't do a good enough job getting him in his rhythm, probably because of penalties.'

The Capitals were short-handed six times and received only three power plays of their own. The last came with 1:54 remaining after Ovechkin was high-sticked by Brad Richards.

Washington pulled Holtby for an extra skater, giving the Capitals a 6-on-4 skating advantage, and put on lots of pressure in the Rangers' end. While the Capitals controlled the puck as time ran down, they never got a shot in on goalie Henrik Lundqvist.

``They did a really good job of protecting him,' Oates said of Lundqvist. ``We probably just could have tried a better way to get to the net just to start the process of him not being able to cover his rebounds, get to the second waves. We were probably too cute with it.'

The Capitals scored on two of their seven power-play chances in their two wins.

``These guys have been through this before. It's playoffs. You're not going to win every game,' Oates said. ``There are a lot of things we could fix. You have got to give them a little bit of credit.'

Outside of Powe's injury, the Rangers continue to get healthier. They got forward Brian Boyle back earlier in the series, and he had a goal and assist on Monday, and defenseman Marc Staal returned in Game 3 from a serious eye injury sustained on March 5.

Rugged forward Ryane Clowe has been sidelined by a suspected concussion since the final week of the regular season. He went through battle drills in practice on Tuesday, and might be able to rejoin the lineup in Powe's place on Wednesday.

``Like any other player, you want to play,' Clowe said. ``Sometimes it's not thinking about the smart decision. At this time of year, I want to play. I did some contact stuff on ice, some battle stuff I haven't done yet. I felt pretty good, and we'll see how the rest of the day goes.'

Preview: Kings (0-0) at Blues (0-0)

Date: May 08, 2013 9:00 PM EDT

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The defending Stanley Cup champions certainly looked the part while evening their series against the St. Louis Blues, whose best move is turning the page.

The Los Angeles Kings dominated the second half of Game 4, powering past a pair of deficits behind forechecking that put the Blues on their heels, and have all the momentum in a series that's tied at 2-2.

The Kings' plan is simple for Game 5 Wednesday night in St. Louis: Keep the pedal down and play physical but smart.

``There hasn't been much difference in the games whether it's home or road,' coach Darryl Sutter said. ``It's all one-goal games and they're all third-period games and you just by shift by shift.'

The Blues have a day to re-boot the system and still have home-ice advantage, by virtue of finishing a single point ahead of the Kings for the fourth seed in the Western Conference. The home team has won all four games, each by a goal.

``Who's got control of anything right now?' coach Ken Hitchcock said. ``They dialed it up, so there's another level out there and it's our job now to answer the level. We've got home ice, we've earned it, and it's best of three now and we'll see where it goes.'

St. Louis has won eight in a row at home, allowing one goal each time, and are facing a team that's been vulnerable away from the Staples Center. The Kings have a nine-game winning streak at home and have dropped eight in a row on the road, including a pair of shootouts in April.

The Blues appeared primed for a knockout punch in Game 4 with two early goals, setting the tone for an uncharacteristic wide-open 4-3 final that matched the scoring total the entire series for both sides. The Kings shrugged off that deficit, scored twice in 1:16 in the third to seize their first lead, and never looked back.

``I think we've been getting better every night,' forward Jeff Carter said. ``We've been in that position before and these guys don't get too down on themselves. We just chipped away.'

The Kings became the first No. 8 seed to win the Cup last year, knocking off the first, second and third seeds. They trailed in the third period just once, in the opening round. They had to dig deep in Game 4, erasing a two-goal deficit for the first time since 2001. The last two periods, the Kings outshot St. Louis 23-10.

``There's a lot of resilience in this room,' forward Dustin Penner said. ``Obviously, we draw on experiences from last year.'

The Blues couldn't sustain their opening jump and perhaps stunned after falling behind never mounted much of a counter-attack.

``If we want to grow as a playoff team and be successful in the future, we have to start bearing down,' defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk said. ``We just took our foot off the gas a little bit. I think maybe we just thought it was going to come a little easier for the rest of the game.'

The Kings capitalized on sloppy plays that Blues captain David Backes said left goalie Brian Elliott ``hung out to dry.'

Carter scored the Kings' first goal on a 2-on-1 break after T.J. Oshie's shallow dump-in deflected off a Kings skate and defenseman Barret Jackman lost an edge and tumbled at center ice. Defenseman Jordan Leopold got burned on a pinch that created a 3-on-1 break on Penner's goal that tied at 2. Patrik Berglund strayed from his assignment, allowing Anze Kopitar to wriggle free and tie it at 3.

The Blues were caught flat-footed not long afterward when Justin Williams, perhaps the Kings' top offensive threat throughout the series, scored the go-ahead goal on a deflection. Williams had six shots in the game.

``Scoring three on them is fine and dandy, but giving up four goals is not our style,' Backes said. ``The turnovers in the neutral zone fed their offense.'

Got Kopitar out of a slump, too, busting a 19-game goal drought.

``You feel about 100 pounds lighter,' Kopitar said. ``So I felt pretty good after that.'

Oshie scored his first two career playoff goals but ended up minus-3 along with linemates Berglund and David Perron. Forward Vladimir Sobotka was among the rare standouts at plus-2 with two assists.

Two days earlier, Hitchcock was much happier with the overall play. Jonathan Quick earned a 1-0 shutout in Game 3 but the Blues missed several golden scoring chances.

``We just have to get back to doing the things that made us successful,' defenseman Jay Bouwmeester said. ``This time of the year it's real close. You don't have to change a lot but sometimes it makes a big difference.'

Preview: Red Wings (0-0) at Ducks (0-0)

Date: May 08, 2013 10:00 PM EDT

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ryan Getzlaf knows the Anaheim Ducks could be getting frustrated.

Instead, he thinks they're just getting started.

The Ducks have controlled long stretches of their matchup with Detroit, outshooting and outscoring the Red Wings over the first four games while getting superior goaltending from Jonas Hiller. Yet the series is even heading into Game 5 on Wednesday night at Honda Center.

Second-seeded Anaheim's stellar regular-season record and formidable talent haven't mattered to the Red Wings, who sneaked out two overtime victories despite playing with a lead in just one of the series' four games.

It's a recipe for tension in the Ducks' dressing room heading into a pivotal point of the first-round series. But to Getzlaf and his teammates, every element of the playoff march is a privilege, particularly after the Ducks missed the postseason in two of the past three years.

``We're far from frustrated,' the Anaheim captain said Tuesday after the Ducks' long flight from Detroit to Orange County. ``This is playoff hockey. This is the best time of the year, and we're in a best-of-three series now. We always knew it was going to be a long series. ... It's been a grind throughout the year. We've always been able to rise up to the occasion, and we're hoping for that tomorrow (in Game 5).'

The Ducks expect to have little trouble regrouping after they barely missed a chance to take a 3-1 series lead in Game 4 on Monday night. After Anaheim blew a third-period lead, Damien Brunner's overtime goal evened the series for the Red Wings, who appeared to be on the ropes after getting shut out by Hiller in the first 100 minutes of the teams' two games at Joe Louis Arena.

``One goal the other way (in Game 4), and everybody is happy around here,' Getzlaf said.

Instead, the Ducks must find additional determination to get past their playoff-tested opponents. Anaheim will have the advantage of its favored matchups on home ice in Game 5 and a potential Game 7, yet neither team believes matchups or friendly crowds have made much impact on this series.

``Quite frankly, the matchups only work if your team is playing well and you get a lead,' Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. ``If you don't get a lead, you may have some great defensive matchups, but you're going to have to change because you need to score goals. We'll get the last change (in Game 5), which will help, because I thought the last game they were definitely trying to get (Pavel) Datsyuk's line against one specific line, and we tried to change it a few times. It's a difficult thing to do.'

Datsyuk scored the tying goal with 6:33 left in regulation in Game 4 for the Red Wings, who finally flexed their offensive skills at home after five-plus periods without a score.

The Red Wings made an obvious effort to get more shots at Hiller in Game 4, sending pucks at the Anaheim net at every opportunity. Hiller was solid all night, but the Red Wings' mentality eventually led to Brunner's winning goal.

``The plan was to get more shots, and shoot from worse angles,' Detroit's Valtteri Filppula said. ``We did a good job. We were able to get pucks back in the offensive zone. I didn't think we did that enough in the previous game.'

The Ducks are hoping to increase their own offensive pressure on Jimmy Howard on Wednesday. Howard acknowledged he hadn't been Hiller's equal in the series, giving up 12 goals on 120 shots, but he played tremendously well in Game 4 when the Ducks pressed for a possible clinching goal.

``I just wanted to give the guys a chance to win,' Howard said. ``They deserved that. I knew I had to be better. I wanted to be better. ... In the playoffs, all it takes is a goalie to get hot, and anything can happen.'

Although Anaheim has generated plenty of offensive chances, the Ducks could use a goal from high-scoring Corey Perry, who won the Richard Trophy with 50 goals in 2011 during his MVP season. He hasn't found the net in the playoffs, and he missed on a couple of golden chances in Game 4.

``If those went in, we wouldn't be having this conversation,' Perry said Tuesday. ``They had a lot of shots (in Game 4), but we had some good chances, too. We've got to create more chances, keep plugging away, and hopefully get some ugly ones.'

Boudreau criticized a few unnamed Ducks after Game 4 for being ``passengers' - passive participants who didn't do enough work to help Anaheim. Major lineup changes seem unlikely after the Ducks' fairly solid play throughout the series, but Boudreau is eager to get his team rolling quickly, before any struggles lead to a potential elimination game.

Detroit again will be without Justin Abdelkader, who must finish his two-game suspension for a big hit on Anaheim's Toni Lydman. The veteran defenseman sat out Game 4 with apparent after-effects from the collision, and Lydman didn't skate in the Ducks' optional practice after traveling Tuesday.

While the Ducks prepared for the pressure of Game 5, the Red Wings worked on minor adjustments for their latest trip to Honda Center, where they've won three of their four games this season.

``We have to go in their barn and steal another game,' Detroit coach Mike Babcock said.

Wednesday's NHL playoff action: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs (+126, 5)

Boston leads series 2-1.

The Boston Bruins ruined the celebration in Toronto on Monday for the city’s first home playoff game since 2004, taking a 2-1 lead on the fifth-seeded Maple Leafs in their Eastern Conference first-round series. The Bruins can push Toronto to the brink of elimination with a road victory in Game 4 on Wednesday. Boston won 5-2 in Game 3 despite being outshot 47-38 by an eager but sloppy Maple Leafs team filled with home-ice adrenaline. The Bruins scored twice off 24 Toronto turnovers and re-established the dominant position they assumed after their 4-1 victory in Game 1.

Boston netminder Tuukka Rask played his best game of the series on Monday, stopping 45 shots after allowing five goals on 52 shots over the first two contests. Toronto center Tyler Bozak and coach Randy Carlyle were vocal about unfair faceoffs after Bozak was kicked out of numerous important draws in Game 3. Bruins coach Claude Julien dismissed Carlyle’s remarks as lobbying the officials. “It’s going to be interesting to see whether the referees and the linesmen just do their job next game and not worry about who’s crying wolf,” Julien told reporters on Tuesday. Even if the Maple Leafs gain an edge in faceoffs, they will need much more to regain the edge they had following their 4-1 win in Game 2, or Wednesday could be the last playoff game in Toronto for a while.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CBC, RDS, CNBC, NESN

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Nathan Horton had a goal and an assist on Monday to bring his total to three goals and four points in the first three games. Horton’s scoring line with David Krejci, who leads all players in the series with seven points, and Milan Lucic, who has six assists, is driving Boston’s offense after the trio combined for only 14 points throughout April. Horton is at the end of a six-year, $24-million contract and will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer, but he is not thinking about that. “The only thing worth thinking about right now is the playoffs and trying to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs,” Horton told ESPN on Tuesday. Jaromir Jagr picked up his first point of the series in Game 3 when he assisted on Rich Peverley’s goal in the second period. Jagr has 190 points in 183 career playoff contests.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS: Phil Kessel scored a power-play goal in the third period on Monday for his second tally in as many games. Historically, Kessel has struggled against his former team - his goal in Game 2 was his first at even-strength in 24 career contests against the Bruins - but he is getting ice-time away from Bruins captain Zdeno Chara and has 10 total shots to show for it, third on the team behind Joffrey Lupul (11) and James van Riemsdyk (14). Lupul and van Riemsdyk have also scored twice for Toronto, while the only other Maple Leafs player to record a playoff goal thus far is defenseman Jake Gardiner, who scored the first of his career on a power play in his second postseason contest. Although he cannot be blamed for either of the team’s two defeats this round, goaltender James Reimer has allowed four goals in three of his last four starts following a 34-save shutout against Florida in the penultimate game of the regular season.

TRENDS:

* Over is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings in Toronto.
* Bruins are 5-1 in the last six meetings in Toronto.
* Over is 23-9-3 in the last 35 meetings.
* Bruins are 35-17 in the last 52 meetings.

OVERTIME:

1. Boston C Tyler Seguin leads the series with 17 shots but has yet to record a point.

2. Kessel has 12 goals and 20 points in his last 14 games, dating back to April 6.

3. Toronto D Mike Kostka (broken finger) is out indefinitely.

Washington Capitals at New York Rangers (-133, 5)

Washington leads series 2-1.

After mustering just one goal during a pair of games in the nation's capital, the New York Rangers enjoyed a relative scoring spree in their last outing. The sixth-seeded Rangers will look to continue their offensive surge and even their Eastern Conference first-round series with the Southeast Division champion Washington Capitals on Wednesday, when the teams reconvene for Game 4 at Madison Square Garden. Derek Stepan scored to snap a tie with 6:25 remaining in the third period and Derick Brassard collected a goal and two assists in New York's 4-3 win on Monday.

Stepan said the Rangers are focused on going hard to the net to challenge Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby. "Games 1 and 2, we thought sometimes we were good at it, and at times we did not do it nearly enough," Stepan said. "That is something as a team that we are trying to keep focus on, continuing to get pucks and bodies to the net." Defenseman Mike Green has scored in the last two contests for third-seeded Washington.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS2, CSN (Washington), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE CAPITALS: While New York elected to practice vigorously on Tuesday, Washington embraced a rare day off. "Rest is a weapon. That’s what all the veteran players always say," right wing Eric Fehr said with a smile. "We’re going to take it today, we’re going to watch the video and we’re going to learn from it and we’re going to be better the next game." The video will show six different trips to the penalty box for Washington, as well as a punchless power play which mustered just one shot in three opportunities with the man advantage.

ABOUT THE RANGERS: After defenseman Marc Staal returned in Game 3, New York may see another key cog crack the lineup for Game 4. Rugged Ryane Clowe, who practiced on Tuesday, has not played since April 25 due to an undisclosed injury that is suspected to be a concussion. "If there's an opportunity to play, I'll play. I'm not holding out here and trying to save it. There's nothing to save," Clowe said. "But I don't want to just play a period or a few shifts. If I play, I am in, all in." Clowe recorded three goals and eight points in 12 games after being acquired from San Jose.

TRENDS:

* Rangers are 7-0 in their last 7 home games.
* Under is 4-1 in Capitals last 5 overall.
* Home team is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
* Capitals are 9-3 in their last 12 games playing on 1 days rest.

OVERTIME:

1. Clowe may take the place of C Darroll Powe, who suffered an undisclosed injury in Game 3. Powe, who didn't practice on Tuesday, sat out the final two periods of Monday's tilt.

2. Washington failed to score on the power play in Game 3 after tallying with the man advantage in each of the first two contests of the series.

3. New York has won its last seven games at Madison Square Garden.

Los Angeles Kings at St. Louis Blues (-125, 4.5)

Series tied 2-2.

The fifth-seeded Los Angeles Kings attempt to break serve Wednesday, when they visit the fourth-seeded St. Louis Blues for a pivotal Game 5 in their Western Conference first-round series. St. Louis entered with home-ice advantage and maintained it by posting a pair of 2-1 victories at Scottrade Center, including one in overtime. The reigning Stanley Cup champion Kings continued the trend with two one-goal triumphs at Staples Center.

Los Angeles, which totaled three goals over the first three games, finally broke out of its offensive funk in Game 4 with a 4-3 win. After falling behind by two goals less than five minutes into the contest, the Kings forged a tie before T.J. Oshie scored his second of the game early in the second period to give the Blues a 3-2 advantage. But Anze Kopitar ended his 19-game drought at 7:14 of the third and Justin Williams tallied 76 seconds later to turn it into a best-of-three series.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, CNBC, CBC, RDS, FSN West (Los Angeles), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE KINGS: Wednesday would be a perfect time for Los Angeles to end its winless streak on the road. The Kings have not been victorious away from home since posting a 3-2 triumph over Dallas on March 31, going 0-4-2 over their last six regular-season road games before dropping the first two contests in St. Louis. Conversely, Los Angeles has won nine consecutive home games and had not allowed a first-period goal during that streak before yielding two on Monday. Left wing Kyle Clifford promised the Kings will be ready from the start in Game 5. "They're going to come out hard. We're going to come out even harder," he said.

ABOUT THE BLUES: Right wing Adam Cracknell was the odd man out Monday as coach Ken Hitchcock scratched the member of the popular "CPR Line" in favor of rookie Vladimir Tarasenko, who made his postseason debut. The 21-year-old Tarasenko saw only 5:51 of ice time and did not record a shot on goal. Hitchcock very simply summed up the third period of Game 4. "They took the game to another level and we didn't have an answer," he said. While the Kings have struggled mightily on the road, the Blues have been superb at home, winning their last eight contests at Scottrade Center. St. Louis has not lost in its own building since April 14 against the Chicago Blackhawks.

TRENDS:

* Kings are 0-8 in their last 8 road games.
* Under is 19-4-3 in Blues last 26 overall.
* Blues are 14-5 in their last 19 vs. Western Conference.
* Home team is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.

OVERTIME:

1. The Blues and Kings combined for seven goals in Game 4 after totaling that same amount over the first three contests.

2. Los Angeles had 11 different players record at least one point Monday.

3. St. Louis G Brian Elliott had allowed just one goal in six straight starts prior to Game 4.

Detroit Red Wings at Anaheim Ducks (-140, 5)

Series tied 2-2.

The Pacific Division champion Anaheim Ducks know they very well could be resting and preparing for a second-round series. Instead, they are gearing up for a pivotal Game 5 of their Western Conference first-round matchup against the seventh-seeded Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday at the Honda Center. Second-seeded Anaheim opened the series with a 3-1 home victory and cruised to a 4-0 triumph at Detroit in Game 3.

The Red Wings posted both of their two victories in overtime, pulling out a 5-4 win in Game 2 after squandering a three-goal lead in the third period and emerging with a 3-2 triumph on Monday after trailing by a tally midway through the third. Gustav Nyquist was the hero on Thursday, scoring a power-play goal just 81 seconds into overtime to even the series at one game apiece, and Damien Brunner tallied at 15:10 of the sudden-death period on Monday to again deadlock the matchup.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS, FSN, FSN Plus (Detroit), Prime Ticket (Anaheim)

ABOUT THE RED WINGS: Most believed Detroit stood no chance in the series considering the large number of players getting their first taste of the playoffs. But whether the Red Wings win or lose the matchup, those players are gaining valuable experience that should help the team down the road. Brunner is one of those postseason first-timers, while Nyquist saw action in four playoff games last year. "We're still a lot of young guys on this team," the 23-year-old Nyquist said. "A lot of us haven't played too much in the playoffs before. As every game goes by, it helps, for sure."

ABOUT THE DUCKS: Coach Bruce Boudreau was disappointed with his team as a whole on Monday. "I don't think, quite frankly, we had 20 players playing," he said. "We had some passengers." However, captain Ryan Getzlaf insisted Anaheim was upbeat following the Game 4 loss. "We're far from frustrated right now," he said. "One goal the other way and everyone is happy. It's the way it goes. It's playoff hockey and it's fun."

TRENDS:

* Red Wings are 6-2 in their last 8 overall.
* Ducks are 1-4 in their last 5 home games.
* Under is 6-1-1 in Red Wings last 8 road games.
* Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Anaheim.

OVERTIME:

1. Detroit LW Justin Abdelkader will serve the final contest of his two-game suspension for an illegal hit on Anaheim D Toni Lydman in Game 3. Lydman did not play in Monday's Game 4.

2. The Red Wings have won three of their four games at the Honda Center in 2013.

3. Ducks RWs Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan have combined to score one goal in the series thus far.

Preview: Senators (0-0) at Canadiens (0-0)

Date: May 09, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

OTTAWA (AP) - The Ottawa Senators are on the brink of advancing in the NHL playoffs, yet according to coach Paul MacLean they are fearful.

The Senators have a 3-1 lead over the archrival Canadiens heading into Game 5 Thursday night in Montreal. MacLean has done his best to deflect attention from his players during the emotional series, and Wednesday afternoon was no different.

MacLean is doing his best to make his team appear as the underdog.

``We're scared to death,' said MacLean of Game 5. ``I know I am. We know it's going to be really hard. Tomorrow is going to be a hard game and we have to make sure we're ready for that no matter what they have or who they play. It's going to be hard.'

Last year, the Senators had a 3-2 series lead over the New York Rangers, but lost the next two games. They're hopeful they've grown from that experience.

``We're going to find out tomorrow if we learned any lessons,' MacLean said. ``We can talk about it, speak about it and address it, but it's actually done on the ice when the puck drops. That's when we'll find out for sure.'

The Senators have a 7-0 record when leading a series 3-1, but the last time the Senators won three straight playoff games was 2007 Only four players - Daniel Alfredsson, Chris Phillips, Jason Spezza and Chris Neil - remain from that team.

Neil believes the team should be more than able to handle the pressure, with veteran leadership and the experience a number of its younger players earned in Binghamton when they won the Calder Cup in 2011.

``It's getting a taste of winning and some of our young guys got that and. And for some of the older guys they have felt the bitterness of losing,' Neil said. ``Whenever you have a team on the ropes you've got to be able to put them down and that's our mindset. We just have to play the game of games.'

The Senators know they can't afford to wait until the last ten minutes to take control as they did in Game 4, where they scored two late goals in regulation before winning in overtime. The Canadiens had been the better team for much of the game and, if not for a few breaks, the Senators could easily be heading to Montreal with the series tied.

But this has been a season of resilience for the Senators. Few gave the Senators any chance of reaching the playoffs after lengthy injuries to Spezza, star defenseman Erik Karlsson and starting goaltender Craig Anderson decimated the team in the regular season. But the depleted lineup found a way to keep winning, and from that players gained a sense of confidence in one another that is now reaping rewards.

It's why when trailing 2-0 heading into the third period the team still felt it had the ability to get back in Tuesday's game.

``It's nice to know that we can persevere in a game,' said defenseman Eric Gryba. ``We kind of laid an egg in the first half of the game or even arguably the first two periods, so to be able to come back and show the character that's in this locker room and battle back to win the game is really a testament to our leadership and the guys in this locker room.'

The Senators could be facing a very different team in Montreal. Goaltender Carey Price is listed as day to day with a lower body injury, while Brandon Prust and Ryan White are out with upper body injuries. Captain Brian Gionta, who missed Game 2 and Game 4, will undergo surgery Friday for a torn bicep tendon and is done for the season.

Not that it has affected the confidence of P.K. Subban

``We can beat these guys. We're better,' Subban said. ``Guys are going to realize when we're coming out the gates and we're flying that we're the better team and there's still life in this series for us.

``But it takes the guys in this room to believe that.'

Preview: Islanders (0-0) at Penguins (0-0)

Date: May 09, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma insists he still believes in Marc-Andre Fleury, that the issues for the reeling Penguins go far beyond the struggles of their Stanley Cup-winning goaltender.

Still, that didn't stop Bylsma from making a switch he hopes will shift momentum in Pittsburgh's highly entertaining but slightly bewildering first-round playoff series with the New York Islanders.

Tomas Vokoun will get the start in net for the Penguins in Game 5 on Thursday, a move necessitated by three straight shaky performances by Fleury and Vokoun's eye-popping numbers against the Islanders this season.

``We brought Tomas Vokoun in to play big games for us,' Bylsma said.

The 36-year-old veteran's next start might be the biggest of his career. The eighth-seeded Islanders tied the series at 2-all with a wild, momentum-swinging 6-4 victory on Tuesday night, one that seemed to further erode Fleury's confidence. New York scored three times in the game's final 16 minutes, including a pair of soft goals that found Fleury woefully out of position.

Fleury expressed his frustration afterward. His remorse, however, didn't stop him from being yanked in the playoffs for the first time in his career. The last time someone other than Fleury started a postseason game for the Penguins was in 2001.

Vokoun, acquired in a trade with Washington last spring, served as 1b to Fleury's 1a during the regular season, going 13-4 with a 2.45 goals-against-average. He was even better against the Islanders, posting a perfect 3-0 record while stopping 98 of 101 shots.

Now he'll be tasked with doing something he's never done in his 15-year career, help get a team past the first round. Vokoun's playoff record is 3-8, though those appearances came for overmatched Nashville teams in 2004 and 2007.

The top-seeded Penguins aren't overmatched. At the moment, though, they do appear a little overwhelmed.

New York looked to be little more than a speedbump for Pittsburgh after the Penguins rolled to a 5-0 win in Game 1. Yet the Islanders have bounced back to win two of the last three while pumping 16 goals by Fleury. New York's dominant performance in third period of Game 4 allowed the Islanders to escape what would have been a 3-1 hole. It also gave their confidence another rocket-fueled boost.

``We're hoping that they are a little rattled and they are a little worried about us because we think that we have every opportunity to win this series,' New York defenseman Matt Carkner said. ``We're here to win this series.'

Two more nights like Tuesday will have the Islanders into the second round for the first time in 20 years. New York's last playoff series win came against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins in 1993. That series went seven games. This one has all the makings of heading there too.

The longer things go, the more Pittsburgh hopes its star-studded roster dotted with Stanley Cup winners and Cup-hungry veterans will get into a rhythm. It hasn't happened in the last three games, as the Islanders have turned each contest into a track meet, luring the Penguins into sloppy mistakes New York has greedily turned into goals.

No miscue loomed larger than a silly giveaway by reigning NHL MVP Evgeni Malkin in the third period on Tuesday. With the score tied at 4, Malkin was attempting to clear the zone when he decided to throw a pass toward the middle instead of safely up the boards. Islanders center John Tavares picked up the lazy pass, swooped in on Fleury then squeezed off a wrist shot and the ensuing rebound that proved to be the game-winner.

Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby credited the Islanders for their relentless forecheck but allowed the Penguins could be considerably smarter with the puck.

``Part of it is us not making bad plays sometimes, too,' he said. ``When they're coming that hard the play needs to be made and you've got to execute or else they're coming back the other way pretty quickly.'

New York has counter-punched the NHL's highest-scoring team much in the same way the Flyers did to the Penguins in the first round a year ago. Philadelphia knocked off Pittsburgh in six high-scoring, defense-optional games. The Penguins stressed they had learned a painful lesson. It hasn't exactly looked like it for most of the last three games.

``They're playing aggressive and we plan on matching that and finding a way to win this series,' Pittsburgh forward Jarome Iginla said. ``I think this could be great for us.'

It could be great for the Islanders too. New York spent the last six weeks of the regular season scrambling to make the postseason. After needing a game to get their feet set, the Islanders have gone skate-to-skate against a team with far more experience about what it takes to be successful this time of year.

Heading into a best-of-3 to determine who makes it to the conference semifinals, New York is only too aware that it's not supposed to be here. The Islanders are playing with house money, or more specifically, Pittsburgh's money.

``It's where we want to be,' Carkner said. ``We've been playing some pretty good hockey. To win (Game 4), that was a really gutsy win and we're excited.'

Preview: Wild (0-0) at Blackhawks (0-0)

Date: May 09, 2013 9:30 PM EDT

CHICAGO (AP) - It's been three years since the Chicago Blackhawks hoisted the Stanley Cup, and they haven't made it past the opening round in the playoffs since that run.

One more win and that changes.

The Blackhawks are on the verge of advancing in the playoffs for the first time since they captured the championship in 2010, with a 3-1 lead over the Minnesota Wild. They can wrap up this first-round series in Game 5 at the United Center on Thursday.

They're not exactly breathing easy, and they insist the Wild haven't seen their best shot.

``You look at some teams that just battled their way into the playoffs in the last 10, 15 regular-season games or so, they come right into it,' Jonathan Toews said. ``You see the pace. You see the physicality in a lot of those other series. We're getting better one game at a time, but we need to start bringing that now.'

The Blackhawks set the pace all season, getting off to a record start and capturing the Presidents' Trophy for leading the league in points. Now, they're in position to knock off Minnesota after losing to Vancouver and Phoenix in the first round the past two years.

They've killed every power play. Their defense has come up big with Corey Crawford playing well in net after letting in some soft goals against the Coyotes last year, and if that's not enough, consider this.

The Wild's top two goalies are banged up. Niklas Backstrom was injured warming up before Game 1, thrusting Josh Harding into the lineup.

Now, Harding's hurt, too. His legs got straddled around the left post when Toews landed on top of him in a collision in the crease in the with about four minutes left in the first period of Game 4 on Tuesday.

He got up gingerly and finished out the period, shaking his left leg several times and testing it with a slow skate behind the net. The Wild went with backup Darcy Kuemper to start the second period, and it's not clear who will be in goal for them on Thursday.

``We like to keep the other team guessing, so we're not only going to not tell them who our starting goalie is, we won't tell them who our backup goalie is,' coach Mike Yeo said. ``Really leave them in the dark.'

Yeo would not reveal the extent of Harding's injury, although he did say the goalie would make the trip to Chicago. Defenseman Clayton Stoner and center Zenon Konopka remain out with injuries and won't make the trip.

``It's desperation time right now,' Wild forward Kyle Brodziak said. ``There's no room for sulking or anything like that.'

The Wild had a chance to tie the series after winning Game 3 in overtime when Jason Zucker scored from a bad angle, but it was a different story in Game 4 on Tuesday. Patrick Sharp scored two goals, Crawford looked good again in goal with 25 saves for his second career postseason shutout and Chicago blocked 26 shots to go up 3-1.

``I think Corey's a great goaltender,' Patrick Kane said. ``He's a big guy. He takes up a lot of net. He's even tough to score on in practice. I think you really see him fighting through screens and fighting through traffic to make those saves - not just the first save but the second, third and fourth. He's been unbelievable through this series. He had a great game last night. It's almost like it's routine now, you really expect it from him.'

Many weren't sure what to expect from the Blackhawks' goalies when the year began, and it was a similar story for Crawford coming into the playoffs even though he and Ray Emery dominated during the regular season.

There was much debate down the stretch over who should be the No. 1 goalie when the playoffs started. Emery's injury ended that.

Crawford has been solid in this series with a .949 save percentage after struggling a bit in the playoffs a year ago.

That's one reason why the defense has held its ground. The forwards have been chipping in, too.

The Blackhawks have also dominated on the penalty kill, with Minnesota going 0 for 15 on the power play in this series. The Wild are the only team without a power-play goal in this postseason.

Chicago, meanwhile, is one win from a second-round matchup with Anaheim or Detroit. Yet, the Blackhawks are not quite ready to exhale.

As good as they've been on the penalty kill, the power play remains an issue - as it has been all season. The Blackhawks are just 1 of 11 in this series after ranking 19th during the regular season.

Can they win the Stanley Cup if they don't improve on the power play?

``I still think we can do it (get better in that area), and by the end of the playoffs, hopefully, we'll show you guys,' Kane said.

Note: Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said Emery and C Dave Bolland, out with lower body injuries, are ``both fine' but are ``doubtful' for Game 5.
