Pirates best bet in baseball; riding nine-game winning streak
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been the best bet in baseball for most of the season, but they’ve been especially profitable over the past nine games.

The Pirates have won nine consecutive contests and boast the best record in baseball (51-30).

The Bucs have been underdogs in five of the nine games and any $100 bettor would be up a cool $1,000.79 if they had wagered on each game of the streak.

The Pirates open a three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies at PNC Park on Tuesday. Pittsburgh is 3-1 against the Phillies so far this campaign and is a -159 favorite at BetOnline for the opener of the set.

Pirates bettors are up a league-high 27.30 units - by far the most profitable team in the bigs

Jays, Pirates, Padres big movers in MLB futures
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s hard to believe but we’re already halfway through the MLB season as the calendar flips to July.

Here are three teams that have drastically improved their futures odds with their stellar play in the last month.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Start of June: 25/1
Now: 15/1

The Pirates opened the 2013 campaign with 60-1 odds to win the World Series and their odds have improved slowly throughout the first half of the season. Pittsburgh caught fire in the month of June, posting a 17-9 record. The Bucs are riding a nine-game winning streak into a three-game set with the Philadelphia Philles beginning Tuesday.

Toronto Blue Jays

Start of June: 100/1
Now: 30/1

Much like the Pirates, the Blue Jays used a long winning streak to increase their stock in June. Toronto ripped off 11 straight wins throughout the middle of the month to get back to the .500 mark and become playoff contenders. Toronto was being dealt as high as 12-1 at some books before it cooled off towards the end of June.

San Diego Padres

Start of June: 50/1
Now: 30/1

The Padres are quietly putting together a very impressive campaign. The Friars opened the season with 100-1 odds to win the World Series and have peaked at 30-1 as of July 1. San Diego enters play Monday only 2.5 games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the NL West lead.

Marlins a good catch for bettors in June
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Miami Marlins and their backers had a fairly successful month of June as the squad posted a 15-10 record for the month and turned a profit for bettors.

Any $100 bettor would be up $1,033.54 if they had wagered on the Marlins in each of their June games.

The Marlins closed the month winning five of six and head into July on the heels of a Jeff Mathis walk-off grand slam to beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 Sunday.

Some solid pitching was key to the Marlins' successful June. The Miami staff ranked No. 5 in the National League with a 3.51 ERA for the month.

Preview: Braves (50-37) at Phillies (42-46)
Game: 3
Venue: Citizens Bank Park
Date: July 07, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

If the Philadelphia Phillies are going to turn their season around, they might have to it without one of their key players for an extended period of time.

A day after placing slugger Ryan Howard on the disabled list, the Phillies look to bounce back from a lopsided loss to the visiting Atlanta Braves on Sunday.

Prior to Saturday's 13-4 defeat, Philadelphia scratched Howard from the starting lineup then placed him on the DL because of inflammation in his left knee. Howard, batting .266 with 11 homers and 43 RBIs, hit a solo shot in a 5-4 victory Friday.

"That's a big blow,' manager Charlie Manuel said. "His presence means something to us. He's still a threat.'

The Phillies (42-46) likely will need Howard healthy if they're to have any chance of making a serious run at the postseason. Howard, bothered by knee issues since May, is expected to have an MRI in a day or two to determine whether he'll need surgery.

"We can't just think about the short term here, we have to think about the long term on Ryan as well," general manager Ruben Amaro told the Phillies' official website. "I think we're going to be pretty conservative with him. If it needs surgery - hopefully it doesn't - if it needs surgery we'll take care of it. If it doesn't, we'll try to rehab him and get him back."

Recently named All-Star Domonic Brown is one Phillie that will be expected to help fill the offensive void. The outfielder has batted .311 in his last 15 games and has a .316 average against the NL East-leading Braves (50-37) this season.

The Phillies will try to regroup behind Jonathan Pettibone (4-3, 3.99 ERA), who is 1-0 with a 2.55 ERA in his last three starts. He gave up a home run and two other hits while matching a career high with six strikeouts in 5 2-3 innings of a 3-1 win at Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

This will be the right-hander's first appearance versus Atlanta, which totaled 10 runs and 26 hits while losing its previous three contests before setting season highs for runs and hits (19) on Saturday.

"A lot of guys swung the bats well,' manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We had good hitting up and down the lineup.'

Brian McCann had four hits and Jason Heyward hit a three-run homer. McCann has gone 16 for 28 in his last seven games, while two of Heyward's four hits in 19 at_bats against the Phillies this season have been home runs.

Atlanta's Kris Medlen (6-7, 3.11) has gone 5-1 with a 2.50 ERA in his past six starts. He's allowed three runs in each of his last three outings, most recently Tuesday when he overcame nine hits in six innings of an 11-3 victory over Miami.

The right-hander has a 3.94 ERA in three starts versus Philadelphia, but dropped to 1-1 against the Phillies after yielding two runs, six hits and four walks in five innings of a 2-0 loss April 4.

Philadelphia catcher Carlos Ruiz has one hit in his last 11 at_bats against the Braves, but is 4 for 6 with a double versus Medlen.

Preview: Athletics (53-37) at Pirates (53-35)
Game: 2
Venue: PNC Park
Date: July 09, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

After unseating the Pittsburgh Pirates for baseball's best interleague record Monday, the Oakland Athletics hope to improve upon that mark Tuesday night.

Dan Straily hopes his success against National League foes continues, too.

Straily takes the mound for Oakland following a brilliant performance as its three-game series in Pittsburgh continues.

The Athletics (53-37) opened the set with a 2-1 victory Monday. Their ninth win in 12 games improved their interleague record to an MLB-best 12-4 while Pittsburgh fell to 11-4 after winning its last eight against AL competition.

Josh Donaldson remained one of baseball's best hitters in interleague play this year, going 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly. He's hit safely in 14 of 16 games against the NL, going 24 for 58 (.414) with five homers and 15 RBIs.

Straily (5-2, 4.52 ERA) has been dominant in his first two tastes of interleague action, yielding one run and five hits over 13 innings in victories against San Francisco and the Cubs. He threw seven innings of one-hit ball in a 1-0 win over Chicago on Thursday.

The right-hander was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento for the third time this season earlier that day as the Athletics chose to give Jarrod Parker extra rest before his next start.

"Even if I didn't have my best stuff, I was going to give it everything I had," said Straily, who went a career-low 3 1-3 innings in his previous start June 22 at Seattle. "My slider was not as sharp as it's been but it was good enough."

Pittsburgh (53-35) will call on Gerrit Cole (4-1, 3.94), who tries to bounce back from his first career loss. The right-hander was the first Pitchers pitcher to win his first four career starts in more than 100 years, but gave up three runs and eight hits over a season-low 5 1-3 innings in a 6-4 loss to Philadelphia on Thursday.

"I thought he pitched well," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's a 22-year-old young man. He's still learning, continuing to grow. He's fun to watch."

Cole's best performance came in his lone outing against an AL opponent, holding the Angels to two runs and four hits in 6 1-3 innings of a 5-2 road win June 21.

Fellow rookie Grant Green was 0 for 3 Monday and struck out twice as he started at second base for Oakland in his big league debut, but he'll remain a regular in the club's lineup, manager Bob Melvin said.

Andrew McCutchen was 1 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, during which he's 16 for 38 (.421) with a .605 slugging percentage.

Neil Walker, who owns a .347 on-base percentage, sat out for the second game in a row but worked out in batting practice. He's experienced discomfort in his right side, which forced him to leave Saturday's contest.

Oakland is 10-0 all-time against Pittsburgh.

Preview: Astros (32-57) at Cardinals (53-34)
Game: 1
Venue: Busch Stadium
Date: July 09, 2013 8:15 PM EDT

The success of the St. Louis Cardinals largely can be attributed to the contributions of Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright, two of the team's five selections to the NL All-Star squad.

Molina could return to the lineup after receiving positive news regarding his injury, and Wainwright will start one day earlier than scheduled as St. Louis hosts the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.

The NL's leading vote getter for the All-Star game, Molina has been sidelined for the past two games due to knee soreness. An MRI revealed no structural damage, though, and the catcher didn't rule out Tuesday as a possible return.

"Everything came back negative and that's a relief," Molina said.

Molina, leading the NL with a .346 average, will be joined by Wainwright, Carlos Beltran - voted a starter - Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig representing the Cardinals (53-34) on the NL roster.

"I didn't think in my life I'd have that many votes," Molina said. "That made me feel good."

Wainwright (11-5, 2.36 ERA) ranks among the majors' leaders in ERA and near the top of the NL leaderboard in strikeouts. The right-hander will throw in this contest rather than Wednesday's two-game series finale in order to get two more starts before the exhibition. He'll also start Sunday against the Chicago Cubs.

He last pitched Thursday and did not get a decision as he allowed four runs in eight-plus innings of a 6-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

"I think what's more important is what's going on inside this clubhouse, and can I help the team in that capacity," Wainwright told the team's official website. "I think I can and I think our staff has trust in me to do that as well. Two more starts before the break gives us a good chance to win those games."

Wainwright's history versus Houston suggests St. Louis should have a solid chance to win at least that first outing. He's beaten the Astros more than any other team, going 12-1 with a 1.44 ERA in 14 career starts, and has won six straight against them while allowing four runs in 45 2-3 innings.

Bud Norris has faced St. Louis more than any other club, and he'll take the mound Tuesday looking to improve on his 2.74 ERA in 15 career starts against the Cardinals.

Norris (6-7, 3.22) has been one bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season for the Astros (32-57), who have the most losses in baseball. He's 2-3 with 2.29 ERA over his last nine starts, tossing at least six innings in each after giving up one run in seven frames Wednesday as he defeated Tampa Bay in a 4-1 win.

"Bud has been absolutely outstanding for us," manager Bo Porter said. "I think he's throwing probably the best he has all season. He's our No. 1 guy and has pitched like an ace."

The right-hander will face a St. Louis team that had lost eight of 11 - all against the AL - before a three-game sweep of Miami over the weekend. Beltran had two hits and Matt Holliday homered in Sunday's 3-2 victory.

Part of the Cardinals' previous slump was a 4-3 loss to Houston on June 26 as the teams split a two-game set.

The Astros have dropped eight of 10 since that contest and fell 5-4 to Texas on Sunday. Catcher Jason Castro, the team's lone All-Star, didn't start but popped out to end the game pinch-hitting.

The Cardinals have won 11 of the last 13 matchups, including six straight in St. Louis.

Date: July 09, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The Boston Red Sox figured that the first half of this four-game set against the Seattle Mariners' AL leaders in ERA would be difficult.

The Red Sox will look to avoid their first four-game slide of 2013 on Tuesday night when they face Hisashi Iwakuma, who has been vulnerable during his four-game winless stretch.

Boston (54-37) fell to 1-3 on this 10-game trip with an 11-4 loss to Felix Hernandez on Monday. Hernandez, second in the AL with a 2.69 ERA, gave up two runs over seven innings.

It may not get easier against Iwakuma (7-4, 2.60 ERA), the only pitcher in the league with a better ERA than his teammate. That mark, though, has risen from 1.79 during his last four outings, with the right-hander going 0-3 with a 5.54 ERA in that span.

Iwakuma has yielded exactly four runs in each start of his winless streak, pitching six-plus innings Thursday as he was charged with a 5-4 defeat at Texas. His 3.86 ERA in July is his highest in any month, and he has never faced the Red Sox.

Boston manager John Farrell is unsure whether he will have Jacoby Ellsbury or Shane Victorino in the lineup after both sat out Monday.

Ellsbury is batting .389 during a 17-game hit streak and leads the majors with 36 steals. The center fielder suffered a left wrist injury in a 3-0 loss to the Angels on Sunday.

"We're hopeful that this is something that will respond to treatment," Farrell told the Red Sox's official website. "If it doesn't, certainly, every test at that point would be taken."

Victorino has sat out two straight games with a hamstring injury and remains day to day.

Seattle (40-49) entered play Monday averaging 3.7 runs for the second-worst mark in the AL. It reached double digits in runs for just the second time all year in its fifth victory in seven games.

Raul Ibanez homered and the bottom third of the lineup went 7 for 12 with six RBIs as the Mariners fell just shy of their biggest outburst of the season - a 12-2 win over the New York Yankees on May 15.

The 41-year-old Ibanez has homered eight times in his last 13 games, batting .364 with 15 RBIs in that span.

"I'm 41," he said. "You can't play this game forever. I used that approach. Hopefully, I can share that approach with the younger guys, telling them, 'Hey, time goes by really fast. Enjoy this.'"

The Mariners have yet to face Boston rookie right-hander Allen Webster (1-2, 7.88), who will make his sixth start after earning his first victory in his last one.

Webster, who is in his third stint with the Red Sox this year, allowed a season-low two runs over six innings of an 8-2 win over San Diego on Thursday.

"I think at each passing start here at this level he starts to get his feet underneath him," Farrell said.

Preview: Mets (38-48) at Giants (40-48)
Game: 2
Venue: AT&T Park
Date: July 09, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

While he's pitched well lately, Dillon Gee's only start against the San Francisco Giants was hardly one to remember.

The New York Mets right-hander will seek a better performance Tuesday night while trying to add to the Giants' recent woes.

Gee (6-7, 4.45 ERA) is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA in his last seven starts and has totaled 47 strikeouts and nine walks in 47 1-3 innings. He fanned seven and gave up two runs over seven innings Thursday against Arizona, but the Mets lost 5-4 in 15 innings.

Gee wasn't nearly as effective against San Francisco on April 23, 2012, allowing seven runs and a career-high 12 hits over 6 2-3 innings in a 7-2 home loss. The Giants (40-48), though, don't appear poised to duplicate that effort.

They enter this game having batted .197 during a 2-12 stretch and fell 4-3 in 16 innings in Monday's series opener.

The Mets (38-48) ended their third game of 13 or more innings this month - and fifth this season - after Brandon Crawford's two-out error scored Eric Young.

``I've never heard of anything like this. It's unbelievable,' manager Terry Collins said of his team's propensity for extra innings. ``At least we're used to it.'

Buster Posey had a career-high five hits for San Francisco, but Brandon Belt, hitting .136 in his last five games, went 0 for 8 with five strikeouts. Pablo Sandoval is 4 for 47 (.085) in his last 12 contests, and Hunter Pence is 3 for 42 (.071) in his past 11.

``There's frustration,' Pence said. ``We want to stay as positive as we can right now. We've got to get it done. We've got to keep pushing to find a way to turn it around.'

Barry Zito (4-6, 4.44) will try to give his team a much-needed boost by snapping a three-game losing streak. The left-hander has given up two runs or fewer in three of his last four starts but only pitched four-plus innings in his latest outing, a 3-2 loss in Cincinnati on Wednesday.

"I put (the team) in a tough situation by only going four innings. My pitch count was high. I have to start getting more action in three pitches. I've got too deep in counts," said Zito, who threw 88 pitches.

Zito allowed one run in that game but was tagged for seven in 4 1-3 frames in his most recent start against the Mets on Aug. 2, a 9-1 loss in San Francisco. He was 3-2 with a 3.35 ERA in his previous seven matchups.

Pitching at home, though, has proved beneficial this season for Zito, who is 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA in 10 starts there. He's 0-5 with a 9.38 ERA on the road.

Gee is 2-1 with a 2.93 ERA in his last four road starts after going 1-3 with a 9.97 ERA in his first five this year. The Mets have also won their past three games in San Francisco.

They haven't won four in a row in the series since an eight-game run June 3-May 16, 2009. New York is also seeking its first three-game win streak since claiming a season-best five in a row May 26-30.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Lookahead spot

The MLB All-Star break is just around the corner. The brief hiatus can be a speed bump for streaking teams and a moment of mercy for struggling ones. The Detroit Tigers have used the Mid-Summer Classic as a kickoff to the “real season”, going a collective 90-61 following the All-Star break the past two seasons.

Detroit is set up for a double lookahead this week. Not only are the Tigers counting down to the post-ASG schedule but take on the lowly Chicago White Sox for three games, starting Tuesday, before a showdown with the Texas Rangers to end the first half of the schedule. The White Sox are small potatoes compared to the Rangers, who will likely be battling Detroit for playoff positioning and possibly a wild card spot come the fall.

Letdown spot

The two conference leaders in the WNBA do battle when the Minnesota Lynx host the Atlanta Dream Tuesday night. Oddsmakers have set the Lynx (8-3 SU, 6-5 ATS) as 6.5-point favorites for that high-profile matchup. A win over the 10-1 Dream would crown Minnesota as the team to beat in 2013.

The Lynx are back in action following that important game Thursday, visiting the stumbling Indiana Fever. The two teams met in last year’s WNBA Finals, but Indiana has fallen from grace with a 4-7 SU and ATS start to the season. Minnesota could get caught in a big letdown spot, especially with the Fever showing some of their championship swagger in recent games.

Schedule spot

The Miami Dolphins have one of the weirdest schedules for the 2013 NFL season. Miami opens with five non-divisional games and closes against three straight AFC East foes. Not only that, the Dolphins find themselves playing four games in just over three weeks in November.

Miami is at New England for a grinder in Week 8 (+7) then hosts the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football in Week 9 (-1). The Dolphins come off that short week with another primetime matchup at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football in Week 10 (+1.5) before finishing this tough four-game, 22-day stretch with a home date versus the San Diego Chargers in Week 11 (-3).

Phillies, best 'over' bet in MLB, lose Howard for 6-8 weeks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Philadelphia Phillies have played over the total in 13 of their last 16 games heading into Tuesday night's action at home against the Washington Nationals.

That streak has helped propel Philly to become the best 'over' bet in the majors with a 50-39-1 over/under record. Any $100 bettor would be up $344.51 if they had bet the over in each of the club's past six games, during which the over went 5-1.

The Phillies have averaged 5.1 runs per game over their past 16 contests, nearly 1.5 runs more than their season mark. But Philadelphia’s offense was dealt a huge blow Monday when it was determined that slugger Ryan Howard requires surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and will miss six to eight weeks.

Howard was hitting .266 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs prior to the injury.

The Phillies took Game 1 of a four-game set with the Nationals, 3-2.

Preview: Braves (52-38) at Marlins (32-57)
Game: 3
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: July 10, 2013 12:40 PM EDT

Given his recent success against the Miami Marlins, it's not surprising that Justin Upton has snapped out of a brief slump in a big way this week.

Upton will try to keep hitting and left-hander Paul Maholm will seek to add to his recent dominance against the Marlins when the Atlanta Braves go for a team-record seventh consecutive win in Miami on Wednesday.

Upton headed to Marlins Park having gone 3 for 23 (.130) in his previous five games but he has four doubles, a home run and five RBIs in the first two in this series. He went 3 for 5 with a homer, two RBIs and scored three times in a 6-4 win Tuesday.

"(Justin's) starting to swing it like he did early in the season," manager Fredi Gonzalez said of his outfielder, who had 12 homers in his first 23 games.

Upton is batting .400 with five homers, nine doubles, two triples and 21 RBIs in his last 22 games against the Marlins. He'll try to add to those numbers while helping Maholm (9-7, 3.81 ERA) continue his success versus Miami (32-57).

The left-hander is 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA in his last four starts against the Marlins, and has kept them scoreless for 13 2-3 innings. He yielded one hit and three walks over seven frames in his only matchup this season, a 2-0 victory April 8.

Maholm had a two-start win streak snapped Friday as he gave up five runs and nine hits - including a season-high two homers - over six innings in a 5-4 defeat in Philadelphia. He allowed four of those runs in the first three innings.

"I made some mistakes and they hit them hard," Maholm told the team's website. "There were a few plays we could have taken care of, but it's one of those days where you battle and see how long you can go."

Maholm will next face a Marlins team that's batted .185 during a five-game skid after hitting .257 during a 10-3 stretch. Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton has been slumping even longer, going 5 for 35 (.143) with 13 strikeouts and one extra-base hit in his last 10 games.

Jacob Turner (2-1, 2.30) looks to rebound from his first loss of the season. In his return to his home state, the right-hander allowed four runs over six innings Friday in a 4-1 defeat in St. Louis after posting a 1.76 ERA in his first six starts.

"I wish I would have pitched a little better and pitched a little deeper into the game," he told the team's website.

Turner lost his only start against the Braves on Sept. 27, giving up four runs - two earned - over six innings.

The Braves are 12-2 all-time at Marlins Park and have won 20 of 25 overall in the series.

Preview: Rangers (53-37) at Orioles (49-42)
Game: 3
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
Date: July 10, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

Baltimore's Wei-Yin Chen is ready to take the mound for the first time in nearly two months after being sidelined with an injury.

Unfortunately, he'll have to deal with Adrian Beltre, who is in the midst of a hitting tear.

Beltre looks to stay locked in and lead the Texas Rangers to a third straight victory over the Orioles on Wednesday night at Camden Yards.

The Texas third baseman continued his torrid stretch in Tuesday's 8-4 win as the Rangers (53-37) tied the franchise's second-best 90-game record with a 14th victory in 19 contests. Beltre was 4 for 4 with two home runs and had a season-high five RBIs. He has six homers over his last six games, improving his 2013 total to 20.

Texas is batting .267 as a team with 56 runs during Beltre's 11-game hitting streak, during which he owns a 1.509 OPS.

"He's been hot and cold and he's picked it up again," manager Ron Washington said. "He picked it up at the right time. When Adrian is getting it done it usually relaxes everybody else. That is what the big guy does in the middle of the lineup."

After losing six of eight, the Orioles (49-42) will activate Chen (3-3, 3.04 ERA) from the disabled list for his first start since May 12 against the Twins, which he left with a strained right oblique.

Chen threw seven shutout innings in a rehab outing for Double-A Bowie on Thursday.

The Rangers, meanwhile, will turn to right-hander Josh Lindblom (1-2, 4.50) in place of Nick Tepesch, who was placed on the DL on Sunday with right elbow inflammation.

Lindblom has gone 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in four starts, the most recent a 4-3 win over Oakland on June 20. He's tossed 4 1-3 scoreless innings over three relief appearances since, allowing one hit and striking out six.

"He has been competitive," Washington told the team's official website. "The main thing is he has been executing pitches. He's going to give up runs, but he has been able to execute. He does his homework and he's prepared when he goes out there. We feel confident with him starting."

Lindblom has never faced Baltimore, which would love to see Chris Davis snap out of a funk. He's 1 for 21 with 12 strikeouts over his last six games, the lone hit a home run against the New York Yankees on Saturday.

Fellow All-Star J.J. Hardy entered the series 1 for his last 22 but has gone 3 for 8 in the first two games and drove in a pair of runs Tuesday.

Chen won his lone start versus Texas, allowing two runs over 7 2-3 innings in a 6-5 final on May 10, 2012.

He's the fifth straight left-hander to start against the Rangers. On Tuesday, they tagged Zach Britton for five runs and eight hits, including both of Beltre's homers.

Beltre is 8 for 14 with three home runs off lefties during his hitting streak, but 0 for 3 against Chen.
