Knicks at Nuggets: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Denver Nuggets (-9, 208)

Carmelo Anthony might not be picking the best time to return to the city where he played the first 7 1/2 seasons of his career. Anthony will make his first appearance in Denver in more than two years when the New York Knicks visit the red-hot Nuggets on Wednesday. Denver, which traded Anthony to New York in a blockbuster deal in February 2011 that reshaped both rosters, is seeking its 10th consecutive victory.

The Nuggets have won 13 straight games at home and are 27-3 at the Pepsi Center - tied with Miami for the fewest home losses. They will provide an imposing obstacle against a Knicks' squad that was pounded by the Golden State Warriors 92-63 on Monday in the opener of a five-game road trip. Anthony, back in the lineup after sitting out the previous three games with an ailing right knee, scored 14 points as New York was held to a season-low total.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, MSG (New York), Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (38-23, 30-29-2 ATS): Anthony is bothered by fluid in the back of his knee that is causing stiffness and soreness and he didn't look like the player who is second in the league in scoring in Monday's loss. Returning to the Mile High City will test him physically and mentally. "For me to go back my first time not wearing a Denver Nuggets jersey, it’s going to be some mixed emotions ... knowing the run that we had back there in Denver," Anthony said. "It was kind of a new beginning that started when I got there. So it’s a lot of emotions.”

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (43-22, 40-24-1 ATS): Points have not been an issue for high-scoring Denver, but it displayed another facet of its offense in Monday's 108-93 win in Phoenix. Center Kosta Koufos, who wound up with the Nuggets as part of the Anthony deal, scored a career-high 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting and also pulled down 10 rebounds. "He's ready to get a pass and he hustles and gets hustle rebounds," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "He's gaining confidence by doing the little things of playing basketball and I really enjoy it."

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
* Knicks are 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Knicks are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Denver.
* Favorite is 17-7 ATS in the last 24 meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Anthony has averaged 29.5 points as the Knicks split a pair of meetings with Denver in New York.

2. The Nuggets have scored at least 100 points in 23 of the last 24 games.

3. Denver has won the past four meetings at home against the Knicks.

Thursday TNT Tips

March 14, 2013

College basketball is taking over at this point in March, but the NBA showcases a pair of games on Thursday night. Two Western Conference teams in desperate need of a win take the court as Dallas heads to San Antonio and Portland hosts road-weary New York. We'll start in Texas with the state rivals hooking up.

Mavericks at Spurs - 8:05 PM EST

San Antonio goes for the four-game season sweep of Dallas as these Southwest Division clubs meet for the final time in the regular season. The Spurs should be extra-focused after getting routed at Minnesota on Tuesday, 107-83 as nine-point road favorites. Tim Duncan rested for the Spurs, while point guard Tony Parker remains out with a sprained ankle.

Dallas wraps up a four-game road trip, looking for a fourth straight victory after outlasting Milwaukee, 115-108 as short underdogs. The Mavs reached the 115-point mark for the fourth time on the road this season, as Vince Carter scored 23 points off the bench. Rick Carlisle's team has cashed eight of the last 10 in the road 'dog role, while posting a 4-2 ATS record on the highway inside the division.

The Spurs have won eight straight games off a loss, as San Antonio owns a 6-2 ATS record in this stretch. Gregg Popovich's club has put together a 22-2 the last 24 games at the AT&T Center, but both losses came in the last three weeks to Phoenix and Portland as heavy favorites. San Antonio has eclipsed the 100-point mark in nine of the past 10 home contests, while cashing the 'under' in five of the last eight games at the AT&T Center.

The season series has gone San Antonio's way with two of the three victories over Dallas coming by at least 25 points. The last meeting in Dallas went to the Spurs in late January, 113-107, as San Antonio held a 20-point lead heading into the final quarter. Duncan was a late scratch as the Spurs cashed outright as two-point underdogs, the ninth cover in the last 10 meetings with the Mavs.

Knicks at Blazers - 10:35 PM EST

New York's recent woes on the highway at Golden State and Denver are definitely a concern as the Knicks try to get on track at Portland. Last night, the Knicks were run out in Carmelo Anthony's return to Denver as nine-point underdogs, 117-94, the second straight double-digit defeat on this six-game road trip. Anthony will not play tonight to rest due to a knee injury suffered earlier this month at Cleveland.

The last time the Knicks faced the Blazers back on New Year's Day, Portland went into Madison Square Garden and grabbed a 105-100 victory as 9 ½-point underdogs. Anthony put up 45 points in that loss, but the Blazers built an 11-point halftime advantage and led from start to finish. New York is making its first visit to the Rose Garden in over two years as the Knicks beat the Blazers, 100-86 as 4 ½-point underdogs in January 2011.

Portland looks to bounce back after Tuesday's home defeat to Memphis as a 1 ½-point underdog, 102-97. The Blazers have now hit the 'over' in five of the last six home contests, while cashing four straight home games prior to the Memphis loss. Terry Stotts' team has covered three consecutive times following a setback at the Rose Garden, including a 109-94 win over Minnesota on March 6.

The Knicks own a 7-5 SU and 6-5-1 ATS record with no rest this season, while winning and covering three straight times in this situation. New York has struggled against the Western Conference on the highway by posting a 4-7 SU and 5-5-1 ATS, including a 2-4 ATS record when receiving points when facing the West.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NBA doubleheader: Mavericks at Spurs, Knicks at Trail Blazers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at San Antonio Spurs (-7.5, 205)

The San Antonio Spurs are among the best teams in the NBA. Lately, they may be the most inconsistent. San Antonio will try to find its form Thursday when it hosts the Dallas Mavericks. After winning three straight by an average of 28.3 points, the Spurs lost at home to Portland by 30, posted a solid win over high-powered Oklahoma City and then suffered a 24-point loss at lowly Minnesota on Tuesday while forwards Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard stayed home.

While San Antonio struggles to regain its footing without All-Star guard Tony Parker in the lineup, the Mavericks continue their climb toward playoff contention. Dallas has won four straight after a 115-108 victory at Milwaukee on Tuesday and trail the Los Angeles Lakers by 2 1/2 games in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Vince Carter scored 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's victory, which gave the Mavs a 3-0 mark on their four-game road trip.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (30-33, 37-26-0 ATS): While Carter was solid in the stretch run Tuesday and Dirk Nowitzki stood out at the start (17 of his 19 points came in the first half), Dallas also got a nice contribution from rookie swingman Jae Crowder. Starting in place of the injured Shawn Marion, Crowder had 14 points -- one shy of his season high -- and a person-best eight rebounds. Marion has missed three straight games due to a sore left calf. He remains day-to-day. The Mavericks are 7-3 without Marion in the lineup. They've won each of the last six without their top defender.

ABOUT THE SPURS (49-16, 36-27-2 ATS): Playing the second half of a back-to-back, coach Gregg Popovich elected to leave Duncan and Leonard behind when the team traveled from San Antonio to Minnesota late Monday night. The players were officially diagnosed with sore knees, but sitting players in situations such as this is nothing new to Popovich. Matt Bonner (two points in 19 minutes) made his second start, Stephen Jackson (14 points) made his fourth and Cory Joseph (15 points) his fifth. The Spurs shot 35.4 percent from the floor and were outrebounded 49-39 in falling to 5-4 since a 16-1 stretch.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings in San Antonio.
* Mavericks are 3-12-1 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
* Mavericks are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings in San Antonio.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. San Antonio has won the first three games of the four-game series by an average of 23 points.

2. After this one, Dallas plays eight of its next nine games at home.

3. In keeping with the Spurs' inconsistency, C Tiago Splitter went 9-for-11 from the field in the win over Oklahoma City but was 1-for-10 against Minnesota.

New York Knicks at Portland Trail Blazers (-3.5, 193)

The New York Knicks will limp into Portland for a matchup with the Trail Blazers on Thursday in what is quickly turning into a disastrous five-game road trip. New York was pummeled by 29 points at Golden State on Monday and absorbed a 26-point beating in Denver on Wednesday. The battered Knicks will be without star Carmelo Anthony, who left Thursday's game with knee soreness and is being sent back to New York for tests.

Knicks center Tyson Chandler also left the Denver game with a left knee contusion but has been listed as probable for Thursday's matchup. The Trail Blazers are 3 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for eighth place in the West and must take advantage of matchups against the depleted Knicks and Detroit on Saturday before heading out on a five-game road trip. Portland has dropped two straight since a stunning 30-point win at San Antonio.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT, MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (38-24, 30-30-2 ATS): Anthony missed three games last week with an ailing right knee and said he would only have it drained as a "last resort," but that appears to be the course of action. Meanwhile, the subplot for Thursday's game is the return of Knicks point guard Raymond Felton. He had a miserable season in Portland a year ago amid questions about his conditioning and was linked to a player mutiny that eventually led to the firing of Nate McMillan. Felton called his stint with the Blazers the "worst moment I had in basketball for sure."

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (29-34, 28-32-3 ATS): Nicolas Batum scored a team-high 26 points in Portland's 105-100 win at New York on New Year's Day, but he continues to struggle while battling an injured right wrist. Batum missed all five shots while scoring four points in Tuesday's home loss to Memphis and had two points in the rout of the Spurs. He has managed only 17 points on 4-for-18 shooting over his past three games. His shooting percentage has dipped to 42.5, the lowest of his five-year career.

TRENDS:

* Knicks are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Portland.
* Knicks are 5-2-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
* Underdog is 8-3-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. New York fell a game behind Indiana for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.

2. Portland is nine games above .500 at home at 20-11.

3. The teams have split the last six meetings.

Sunday Night Tips

March 17, 2013

With all the tournament buzz surrounding the sports world tonight, there is a chance to cash in with a handful of NBA games on the board. Actually, these contests have major playoff implications as seeding can be changed with potential tiebreakers be broken. We'll take a look at three of these night contests, starting with a battle of two Western Conference foes that aren't very fond of each other in Texas.

Warriors at Rockets - 7:05 PM EST

Houston goes for the four-game sweep of Golden State tonight, as the Rockets enter action at the Toyota Center one half-game behind the Warriors for sixth in the West. Obviously, the Rockets hold the season tiebreaker, but a victory tonight would definitely hurt Golden State's already shaken momentum with only three weeks left in the season.

The Warriors hit the road after getting blown out by the Bulls on Friday night, 113-95, as Golden State once trailed by as many as 36 points. Mark Jackson's squad owns a dreadful 2-7 ATS record the last nine games, but eight times the Warriors were listed in the favorite role. The Warriors have dropped nine of their last 10 games away from Oracle Arena, including a 1-7 ATS record when receiving points.

The Rockets look for a better effort tonight after squeezing by the lowly Timberwolves on Friday, 108-100 as 14 ½-point favorites. Houston has won five of its past seven, while trying to avoid the dreaded seven or eight seed in the West. In three wins over the Warriors this season, the Rockets dropped 140 and 116 points, while putting together a solid defensive effort in the last meeting in Oakland by holding off Golden State, 94-88 as two-point underdogs.

Thunder at Mavericks - 7:35 PM EST

Dallas is staying alive in the Western Conference playoff race after running away from Cleveland in the second half of Friday's 10-point home victory. The Mavs have won five of their previous six, with the lone loss coming by one point at San Antonio on Thursday. However, Dallas has not figured out how to beat Oklahoma City, losing nine straight times in the series, including three times this season.

Granted, two of those setbacks this season have gone to overtime, but the Thunder has Dallas' number, while winning four consecutive visits to the American Airlines Center. Oklahoma City has a pair of huge battles on deck against Denver (Tuesday) and at Memphis (Wednesday), as the Thunder owns a 4-6 SU and 3-7 ATS record the last 10 games on the highway. In the role of a road favorite, Scott Brooks' club is just 4-9 ATS the previous 13 times out, including a non-cover in an overtime triumph at Dallas in mid-January.

The Mavs are just three games behind the Lakers for the eighth spot in the West playoff race, but Dallas is 0-9 this season against the top three teams in the conference (Spurs, Thunder, and Clippers). Since January 9, Rick Carlisle's team has cashed in 11 of 13 opportunities in the underdog role, including covers against Oklahoma City and Memphis at home. Dallas has won seven of its past 10 games at home, while hitting the 'under' four straight times.

Hawks at Nets - 8:05 PM EST

A pair of second-place teams hooks up at the Barclays Center tonight, but Brooklyn has a more realistic shot of finishing atop its division than Atlanta. The Nets are just one game behind the Knicks in the Atlantic Division entering today's action, while the Hawks are battling it out with the Bulls and Celtics for the fifth seed in the East.

Brooklyn dominated Atlanta, 93-80 on March 9 at Philips Arena to cash outright as three-point 'dogs. Joe Johnson scored just eight points in his return to Atlanta, but Brook Lopez and Andray Blatche torched the Hawks with 18 points apiece. The Nets have taken two of three meetings from the Hawks this season, including a 94-89 home triumph in mid-January, but Atlanta cashed as 6 ½-point 'dogs.

The Hawks are fresh off consecutive home victories over the Suns and Lakers, as Atlanta seeks its first road win in six tries. Larry Drew's club owns a 1-4 ATS record in the last five games away from Philips Arena, while posting a 4-9 SU mark in the past 13 road contests against Eastern Conference foes. The Nets have won four of their last five games, while going 4-1 to the 'under' in the past five at the Barclays Center.

NBA

Sunday, March 17

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fullcourt press: Sunday's NBA betting notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Toronto Raptors (+7.5, 195.5)

The Heat will be trying to match the 2007-08 Houston Rockets for the second-longest winning streak in history at 22 straight games when they visit the Toronto Raptors. The Heat have won 10 straight in the series, including two meetings in 2012-13. Miami is 8-1 ATS in its last nine road games.

Orlando Magic at Milwaukee Bucks (-8.5, 207)

Four straight opponents and seven of the last eight have scored at least 100 points on the Bucks. During their current three-game slide, Milwaukee has allowed an average of 109.3 points. The Magic are losers of 35 of their last 41 games, but are 5-0 ATS in their last five road games.

New York Knicks at Los Angeles Clippers (-11.5, 195.5)

The Knicks are hoping to have Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler in the lineup when they attempt to snap a three-game slide. New York was having some trouble generating points even with its stars on the floor over the past few weeks, averaging 93.7 points over its last 15 games. The Clippers are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games against East foes.

Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets (-7.5, 216.5)

The Rockets put on a historic display the last time the Warriors visited, matching an NBA record with 23 3-pointers in a 140-109 drubbing on Feb. 5. Houston has taken five straight and eight of the last nine in the series. The Warriors are 1-8 ATS in the last nine meetings in Houston.

New Orleans Hornets at Minnesota Timberwolves (-2.5, 188.5)

This is the last of four meetings this season, and the Hornets are trying to salvage a split after taking two of three from the Timberwolves last season. The Hornets have lost two straight and 10 of 13 after a 96-87 defeat at Washington on Friday. The Timberwolves have lost two straight and 10 of 12, but one of their five wins over the past six weeks was a 115-86 home victory over New Orleans on Feb. 2. The Hornets are 0-5 ATS in their last five road games.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Dallas Mavericks (+4.5, 209.5)

Dallas is playing solidly with five wins in its last six outings. But Oklahoma City is looking to finish off a four-game season sweep of the Mavericks. Two of this season’s three meetings have been decided in overtime; Oklahoma City won the other by 21 points. The Mavericks are 18-4 ATS in their last 22 games against Western Conference opponents.

Atlanta Hawks at Brooklyn Nets (-4.5, 188)

The Hawks have won two straight following three consecutive losses. After missing Wednesday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers with a sprained left knee, Josh Smith had 17 points and 11 rebounds in a 107-94 win over Phoenix on Friday. Brooklyn has won nine of its last 14 to move within one game of third-place New York. After playing Atlanta, the Nets head out for an eight-game, 17-day road trip beginning Monday in Detroit. The under is 5-1 in the Hawks’ last six road games.

Sacramento Kings at Los Angeles Lakers (-12.5, 212.5)

The Los Angeles Lakers figure to be without Kobe Bryant when they host the Sacramento Kings on Sunday. Bryant left after one quarter in Friday’s victory over the Indiana Pacers, two days after suffering an ankle injury against the Atlanta Hawks. Los Angeles has won eight of its last nine home games against the Kings, who have played over in seven of their last eight road games.
