Nazem Kadri scored his 19th, 20th and 21st goals of the season for the Maple Leafs in their 6–3 win against the Blue Jackets. This is the third time that Kadri, Toronto’s first-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft, has reached the 20-goal mark in his NHL and Leafs career. Only two other players selected by the Maple Leafs in the last 30 drafts (1988–2017) have recorded at least three 20-goal seasons for Toronto: Sergei Berezin (4) and Alexei Ponikarovsky (3). Berezin was a 10th-round pick by the Leafs in 1994 and Ponikarovsky was chosen by Toronto in the fourth round in 1998.
Kadri’s hat trick was the fourth of his NHL career and the first this season by a Maple Leafs player. There are now only four NHL teams that have not had a player register a hat trick this season: Columbus, Detroit, Nashville and Ottawa.
Varlamov blanks Canadiens
Semyon Varlamov made 44 saves in his 2–0 win against the Canadiens in Denver on Wednesday. Varlamov has recorded 19 shutouts in his seven seasons with the Avalanche, including four shutouts in which he faced 40 or more shots on goal. That’s as many 40-save shutouts as all other goaltenders combined have produced for the Quebec/Colorado franchise (four): two by Patrick Roy, and one each by Craig Billington and Reto Berra.
