A couple of years back, one of the FA Cup promotions on television had a theme – “Anything Could Happen”. This season’s tournament was a sort of an embodiment of those words. Lincoln City’s run up to the quarter finals, Sutton United’s run up to the last 16 and Wolves dumping Liverpool out earlier in the tournament. Not just this season’s results, but all of the last four finals have been contested (and once won) by at least one team that was not in the top ten of the Premier League at that time. But this mini-era of the underdogs seems to be ending with four of the top-six in the English hierarchy competing this weekend at Wembley for a place in the final. Fourth-placed City take on sixth-placed Arsenal in what promises to be an interesting encounter.

With the calls for Arsene Wenger’s ouster growing shriller by the day and Gunners’ form wobbling in the couple of months, it is fair to say that Wenger’s men come into this semifinal as underdogs. When a long-term manager has to adopt a tactic (three at the back) that was last adopted by the club 20 years back, it is safe to say that the club is slowly running out of ideas – or players. The injury list at Arsenal is competing quite well with the growing list of Wexiteers. Although Wenger’s men have had an upper hand over Manchester City in the last few encounters, this contest promises to be tough for them and they will have to muster all their reserves of talent and will power to overcome the Blues.

Manchester City might have had higher targets at the start of the season. But now FA Cup is the only silverware the Guardiola can win in his first season and his team is going to be very motivated to win it. While City have underperformed against Arsenal slightly, especially recently, they come into this fixture in better form. Their captain is back from injury and is scoring. Vincent Kompany’s return lends strength to the Blues’ defense. Their Brazilian starlet Gabriel Jesus is also back early from his fracture and is traveling to London for the game. Guardiola will be quite confident about his side’s chances, although he will give the usual respect that Gunners deserve due to their record in the tournament.

TEAM NEWS

For Arsenal, David Ospina (back), Danny Welbeck (toe), Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez (thigh) are all unavailable, while Jeff Reine-Adelaide (ankle) and Santi Cazorla (Achilles) are out for the season. This could mean that Wenger sends out a three-man central defense again, after having used it successfully against Middlesbrough last week. However, he could bring back Theo Walcott and Hector Bellerin back into the team to provide pace on the wings.

For Manchester City, Gabriel Jesus could make a minor appearance but John Stones remains unavailable due to a muscular injury. Other than this, Guardiola can pick the team he wants and in fact faces a challenge of too many options especially in the attack.

INTERESTING STATS

This will be the fourth FA Cup tie between the clubs, and the first since 1971 when Arsenal won in the fifth round en route to lifting the trophy.
Arsenal’s only defeat in their last 21 FA Cup matches came against Watford in last season’s quarter-final. They have won the trophy twice in last three seasons.
The Gunners have reached the FA Cup semi-finals for the 29th time, a competition record.
Manchester City have progressed from each of their last eight FA Cup semi-finals, most recently in 2013 against Chelsea. Their last defeat at this stage was in 1932 against Arsenal.
City have alternated between victory and defeat in their last seven appearances at Wembley, beating Liverpool in a penalty shootout last time out in the 2016 League Cup final.
Pep Guardiola won his only previous game as a manager at Wembley, when his Barcelona side beat Manchester United 3-1 in the 2011 Champions League final.
KEY MEN

ALEXIS SANCHEZ

Although Olivier Giroud is likely to be in the team for Sunday’s semifinal, the main goal threat from Arsenal will be their Chilean talisman. Alexis Sanchez loves to score at Wembley, having scored five in four appearances and Arsene Wenger must be hoping that he can stretch that streak a bit longer. He was suffering a slightly lean patch (more than 300 minutes without scoring) of form but a goal at Riverside on Monday ended that patch. With Arsenal defense promising leaks, it is imperative that Arsenal play attacking football and Sanchez will be key in their attacking movement.

SERGIO AGUERO

Even though Pep Guardiola plans to include Gabriel Jesus in the squad, it is quite unlikely that the Brazilian will straight away displace Aguero at the top. Especially, considering Aguero’s form in this season’s FA Cup and his overall goal scoring form. He has scored four goals in four matches in FA Cup this season, and has scored six goals in the last seven appearances for City. He will be keen to add to his tally and Guardiola might have included Jesus in the squad to keep Aguero sharp (and Wenger guessing).

The Verdict

Both the teams come into this fixture quite desperate to win. Progress to the final and an eventual victory there is perhaps the only scenario in which Wenger’s tenure at Emirates could be extended, albeit that too is quite unlikely. But Arsene Wenger would want to go out with a trophy win. On the other side, Guardiola would want to win the only available trophy in his first season at Manchester City. As neither side will lack motivation, it will all come down to the ability. I feel both are quite evenly matched in attack but in defense, it seems that Arsenal is weaker. City’s attack should be able to find enough gaps in the Gunners’ defense to win the semifinal in 90 minutes. For Arsenal this year, FA Cup does not seem to be ‘something that could happen’.

Arsenal 1-2 Manchester City

As the Premier League is inching towards the finale, Burnley will face North West giants Manchester United at Turf Moor in a game whose high stakes could not be higher for both sides.

THE PREMISE

Sean Dyche’s Burnley have had a stellar campaign in their 21,401 capacity home in Lancashire winning 10 out of 14 games – accruing 32 points out of their overall total of 36. They have the sixth best home record in the country and the best among teams in the bottom half. Not really threatened by the prospect of relegation, the Clarets have tailed off in recent weeks winning just 1 in 10 games in the Premier League. But with their opposition running low on gas following a 120-minute struggle in midweek, Dyche should be eyeing a massive win on Sunday, which should see them finish closer to the upper mid-table sides than the opposite end.

For Manchester United, this is a massive game for different reasons. Despite their progression to the semi-final of the Europa League, the Red Devils cannot afford to lower their guard in the Premier League at a stage where anything can happen and one good weekend could take them near the top four places. With rivals Man City engaged in FA Cup duties, United have the opportunity to close the gap to one point ahead of their meeting in the Manchester derby the following mid-week. They are still on an unbelievable 22-game unbeaten run – the longest in Europe, but will need more than a draw to keep the pressure intact on the teams around them on Sunday.

TEAM NEWS

Sean Dyche says Sam Vokes and Scott Arfield are ‘touch and go’ but will be boosted by the return of Johann Berg Gudmundsson who is back in contention to feature in the weekend. It remains to be seen whether midfielder Joey Barton could be involved, who is waiting on a court hearing, regarding betting allegations.

United are facing another injury crisis – with three of their four regular center-backs unavailable for the trip to Burnley. Talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic alongside Juan Mata, is also ruled out after the forward suffered an injury on Thursday leaving them short in attacking positions. Wayne Rooney however, is expected to start after the skipper was named as an unused substitute against Anderlecht.

INTERESTING NUMBERS

Man Utd have scored at least 3 goals in their last 3 away matches (Premier League).

The Red Devils have failed to score in two of their last three visits to Turf Moor.

PREDICTION

Burnley will look to take advantage of United’s fatigue on Sunday. But Mourinho’s men have developed a resilience that even the league leaders found hard to break down. Score draw, for me.

Burnley 1-1 Manchester United

Liverpool are one of only two top six teams playing in the Premier League this weekend, therefore they have a huge opportunity to strengthen their position in the top six. Although they have played more matches than the rest of the top six, at this stage of the season points on the board are better than games in hand. They are currently six points ahead of Manchester United in 6th place and it is looking increasingly likely that they will be playing Champions League football next season. Their opponents on Sunday will be Crystal Palace, a team in good form, but they will be confident of taking the three points at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp has done an excellent job at Liverpool this season. He has arguably the worst squad available to him in the top six, but he is taking them in the right direction and he could be the man to return the good times to the club. Their run-in looks relatively simple, but the Reds have struggled more in matches against bottom-half teams than their rivals in the top six. They will be aware of Palace’s recent resurgence under Sam Allardyce and it is a match that Klopp won’t be taking for granted.

The Eagles are now seven points above the relegation zone after a great run of form that has seen them take 16 points from a possible 21 across their last seven matches. Relegation fears have eased, but Allardyce will still be looking for a couple more wins to confirm their Premier League status. During recent weeks, they have managed to beat both Chelsea and Arsenal, which will give them confidence ahead of their trip to Anfield. They have nothing to lose and that has been when Palace have been at their most dangerous under Allardyce.

This has been a fixture that Liverpool have struggled in during recent seasons. Palace have won three of the last five Premier League matches, but the Reds have managed to win the last two. At Selhurst Park earlier this campaign, Liverpool ran out 4-2 winners with goals from Emre Can, Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino. James McArthur bagged a brace for the hosts.

INTERESTING STATS

Liverpool have scored more goals than any other Premier League team this season with 69. They will be confident of adding to that total this weekend.

Crystal Palace have kept four clean sheets during their last seven matches. Their defence has improved massively under Allardyce and they will pose a difficult test for Liverpool on Sunday.

Thanks for the lead on Napoli. Put 1 unit on game for o3. At half time no score so 2 units on 0 1/2,2. Hit them all.

Would be nice to have yourself, HF, Player, Bawlmer, and Itsdativan put on a vegas session of handicapping soccer. I'd spend the $$$ on that one.
