Friday Tips
February 1, 2013
The first February NBA card provides bettors with a healthy 12-game card. Among the matchups, the Bulls and Nets hook up in Brooklyn, while the Knicks host the surging Bucks at Madison Square Garden. We'll begin with another key Eastern Conference matchup as two teams with bad blood meet up in a playoff rematch.
Heat at Pacers - 7:05 PM EST
Miami eliminated Indiana in six games of the second round of last season's playoffs, but the Pacers picked up some revenge in the first meeting this season. Indiana silenced Miami's offense in an 87-77 defeat at Bankers Life Fieldhouse as the Pacers cashed in the home underdog role. The Heat heads to the Hoosier State tonight off another impressive victory on Wednesday night.
The defending World Champions beat the Nets for the third time this season, 105-85 as 2 ½-point favorites, the third win over Brooklyn by double-digits. Miami drilled 11 three-pointers in the victory, while bouncing back from Sunday's double-overtime setback at Boston. Erik Spoelstra's team has cashed just three of the last 10 times in the away 'chalk' role, as the Heat has allowed less than 100 points in regulation in seven of the last eight road contests.
The Pacers snapped a three-game skid with a 98-79 dispatching of the Pistons on Wednesday, cashing as 8 ½-point home favorites. Frank Vogel's club has won 12 straight games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, while giving up 95 points or less in each of those victories (9-2-1 to the 'under'). Indiana plays eight of the next nine games at home, which includes a back-to-back-to-back set starting Monday with a make-up game against Chicago.
Bulls at Nets - 7:35 PM EST
Chicago is quietly moving up the Eastern Conference standings with a successful 12-4 run in January. The Bulls passed the Pacers for the top spot in the Central Division at 28-17, while winning six of the last seven games away from the United Center. Carlos Boozer sat out Wednesday's rout of Milwaukee with a hamstring injury, as six Bulls scored in double-figures in their second victory at the BMO Harris Bradley Center this season.
The Nets have hit the skids recently by dropping three of their last four games, as each defeat has come by at least 13 points. In three losses to the Heat this season, Brooklyn was limited to 89 points or less each time, while allowing at least 100 points for the third time in four contests overall. In spite of the setback to Miami, P.J. Carlisemo's club has won eight of the last nine games at Barclays Center (5-3-1 ATS).
In the last meeting between the Bulls and Nets in Chicago, Tom Thibodeau's team held on for an 83-82 victory in mid-December. Brooklyn cashed as 4 ½-point underdogs, but the Nets shot just 38% from the field in the defeat. The Nets have lost five of the last six matchups with the Bulls dating back to March 2011, as Chicago makes its first visit to the Barclays Center.
Bucks at Knicks - 7:35 PM EST
The top three teams in the Central Division are all surging at the right time, which includes Milwaukee. The Bucks were tripped up the Bulls on Wednesday, but Jim Boylan's club is rolling through an 8-4 stretch since the removal of Scott Skiles as head coach on January 6. Milwaukee travels to the Big Apple tonight looking to avenge a home blowout loss to the Knicks in November.
New York shots lights out in a 102-88 triumph in Milwaukee as 2 ½-point favorites on November 15, as Carmelo Anthony scored a game-high 29 points. The Knicks outscored the Bucks by 21 points in the middle two quarters, while taking their third straight victory against Milwaukee in the series. Mike Woodson's team started the season winning their first 10 home games, but the Knicks are just 6-6 SU and 4-8 ATS the last 12 contests at the Garden.
Milwaukee is the hottest 'over' team at the moment by cashing in six straight games, while allowing at least 102 points five times in this stretch. Except for that 88-point effort against Chicago on Wednesday, the Bucks' offense has passed the 108-point mark five times in the last six, including three times on the road. The Bucks have captured five of the last seven games on the highway, while one of those losses came when Milwaukee squandered a 20-point third quarter lead at Cleveland last Friday.
Blazers at Jazz - 9:05 PM EST
Amazingly, it took until February for these two Northwest Division rivals to meet for the first time this season. Portland and Utah will see each other twice over the next two days, with a matchup at the Rose Garden on Saturday night. The first leg of this home-and-home takes place in Salt Lake City tonight, as the Jazz looks to cover one time on this three-game homestand.
After dropping a 45-point decision to the Rockets on Monday night, the Jazz rallied to top the Hornets, 104-99 on Wednesday, but failed to cash as eight-point favorites. Tyrone Corbin's squad finished January with a strong 10-4 SU record, but stumbled to an 8-6 ATS mark after three straight home ATS defeats. Utah took care of Portland last season by sweeping the four-game series, but three of those wins took place in April when the Blazers were long gone from playoff conversation.
Portland put together is most impressive effort on the season on Tuesday night by rallying from a 22-point deficit to stun Dallas at the buzzer, 106-104. LaMarcus Aldridge tied the game with his first three-pointer of the season, then won the game with a jumper at the horn, but the Mavs cashed as three-point 'dogs. Portland has cashed five of the last seven games away from the Rose Garden, but has lost three consecutive road games straight-up.

Wednesday Tips
February 6, 2013
Wednesday's NBA card is one of the largest of the season with 13 games on tap. The Thunder and Warriors meet up for the third time this season with their series tied at one apiece, while the Bucks travel to Salt Lake City with no rest to battle the Jazz. We'll begin with the Heat playing their second game back from a long road trip against a run-and-gun Houston squad.
Rockets at Heat - 7:35 PM EST
The last time these two teams met up in Houston, the Heat outlasted the Rockets, 113-110 as 5 ½-point favorites in mid-November. Miami squandered a 17-point lead, but managed the victory as LeBron James torched Houston for 38 points and 10 rebounds, while the Heat shot 50% from the floor. The Rockets head to South Florida with no rest following Tuesday's home blowout of the Warriors.
Houston has won three of its last four games away from the Toyota Center, including double-digit victories at New Orleans and Utah as underdogs. However, the Rockets lost their most recent road contest at Denver last Wednesday, 118-110, the only non-cover in the last five games. Kevin McHale's club owns a solid 16-6 ATS record against the Eastern Conference, however, the Rockets have failed to cash in their last four road games versus Eastern foes.
The Heat have covered five straight off an ATS loss, as Miami is coming off a win as a 14-point favorite over Charlotte on Monday, 99-94. Miami hopes to avoid a letdown with both Los Angeles clubs coming into the American Airlines Arena this weekend (Clippers-Friday, Lakers-Sunday). Erik Spoelstra's club has put together a 2-4 ATS record the last six home games, as three of those losses came as double-digit favorites.
Grizzlies at Hawks - 7:35 PM EST
Both these clubs are coming off losses last night, as Memphis makes the short trip to Atlanta. The Hawks have dropped four of the previous five games, including Tuesday's 114-103 defeat at Indiana as six-point underdogs. The Grizzlies were tripped up by the Suns, 96-90, as Phoenix cashed in the road 'dog role.
Atlanta took care of Memphis in the first matchup back in December, 93-83 to cash outright as seven-point underdogs. The Hawks overcame a six-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Grizzlies, 32-13 in the third quarter, as Josh Smith led the way with 24 points. The road team has now won four of the last five meetings in the series, as the Grizzlies blew out the Hawks at Philips Arena last February.
Memphis has cashed seven of 10 times with no rest this season, including a 5-1 ATS record on the highway in this situation. The defense has let down the Grizzlies recently on the road, allowing at least 100 points in four of the last five away contests. The Hawks have hit the 'over' in six of eight home games against Western Conference competition.
Warriors at Thunder - 8:05 PM EST
Golden State hits the court in Oklahoma City tonight after suffering a 31-point thumping at Houston on Tuesday. The Warriors trailed by just one after the first quarter, but Mark Jackson's club was outscored, 102-72 over the final three quarters, while allowing the Rockets to knock down 23 three-pointers. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Warriors, who continue a tough road trip against a Thunder team that has alternated wins and losses in the last nine games.
OKC blew out Dallas on Monday night, 112-91, while cashing for the first time in three tries against the Mavs this season. Scott Brooks' team played just five home games in January, winning four times, including three victories against Western Conference foes Dallas, Denver, and Memphis. The Thunder fell to the Warriors in Oakland last month, 104-99 as 1 ½-point favorites, as Golden State outscored OKC, 52-42 in the second half.
The Warriors have cashed the 'over' in 10 of 12 games with no rest, while hitting the 'over' in eight of the last 10 contests overall. In fact, Golden State nailed the 'over' in eight of the last previous nine games away from Oracle Arena, as the only 'under' occurred in San Antonio with Stephen Curry out of the lineup. Golden State has lost seven straight visits to Chesapeake Energy Arena dating back to 2008, as the Thunder scored at least 100 points in each matchup.
Bucks at Jazz - 9:05 PM EST
Milwaukee suffered one of the worst ATS setbacks of the season last night, as the Bucks blew a 17-point lead in a 112-104 defeat at Denver. Here's the kicker - the Nuggets closed as seven-point favorites and never covered the spread until the final minute of regulation, much to the dismay of Bucks' bettors. The Bucks look to turn things around tonight with the short trip to Salt Lake City, facing a Jazz club that has won 10 of their last 14 games.
Utah is rolling at home with nine victories in its previous 10 contests at EnergySolutions Arena, including a 98-91 overtime triumph over Sacramento on Monday. The Jazz failed to cash as 8 ½-point favorites, the third ATS loss in the last four home games. Tyrone Corbin's team has won all six home games against Eastern Conference foes, while covering four times.
Since Jim Boylan took over as interim coach of the Bucks on January 6, Milwaukee is riding a crazy 11-4 run to the 'over.' Six of those nine 'overs' have come away from the BMO Harris Bradley Center, while scoring at least 100 points in four of the last five road games. The Bucks have struggled on the second end of a back-to-back this season, cashing in just four of 12 opportunities.

NBA TNT doubleheader: Lakers at Celtics, Bulls at Nuggets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics (-2, 194)
Just as things were starting to fall into place for the Los Angeles Lakers, another major injury cropped up that could severely impair the team's chances of snagging a playoff slot. Forward Pau Gasol is the latest casualty for the Lakers, suffering a torn plantar fascia in his right foot during Tuesday's win over the Brooklyn Nets. Gasol was headed back to Los Angeles to be examined by a specialist, but he is expected to miss at least four weeks. Meanwhile, the Lakers will put their three-game winning streak on the line when they visit the Boston Celtics on Thursday.
Boston suffered what appeared to be a debilitating injury when All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo was lost to a season-ending knee injury. Rather than fold, the Celtics have played their best ball of the season, running their winning streak to five games since Rondo was hurt. Kevin Garnett scored a season-high 27 points in Wednesday's victory over the Toronto Raptors - the only road win during the current streak. All five starters scored in double figures for the fourth straight game for the Celtics.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT
ABOUT THE LAKERS (23-26, 20-28-1 ATS): Gasol was largely responsible for helping Los Angeles snap an eight-game road losing streak, averaging 20 points during the current three-game run. He was starting in place of Dwight Howard, who has sat out the last three games after aggravating the torn labrum in his right shoulder in a loss at Phoenix on Jan. 30. Howard is listed as day-to-day, but Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant let it be known that the day should come soon. "You have to play through where you have to manage the pain," Bryant said. "When you go through those things you learn your body and what you can push through."
ABOUT THE CELTICS (25-23, 19-26-3 ATS): Boston's bench had produced an average of nearly 50 points in the three games prior to the matchup with Toronto. On Wednesday, former Raptor Leandro Barbosa did most of the damage, scoring 12 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to spark the game-winning rally. It was the third straight game in double figures for Barbosa, who has shot at least 50 percent in each game since Rondo went down. Coach Doc Rivers earned his 400th win with the Celtics, putting him third on the franchise's all-time list behind Red Auerbach (910) and Tom Heinsohn (427).
TRENDS:
* Under is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings in Boston.
* Under is 6-2-1 in the last nine meetings.
* Lakers are 7-15-1 ATS in the last 23 meetings.
* Underdog is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Road team is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. Los Angeles has won three straight against Boston, including both meetings last season by a combined four points.
2. Paul Pierce, who has four double-doubles in his last five games, is averaging 24.7 points in 24 games against the Lakers.
3. Howard averaged 16.4 points and 12.7 boards in 27 games against Boston while he was with the Orlando Magic.
Chicago Bulls at Denver Nuggets (-6.5, 197.5)
The Denver Nuggets attempt to extend their season-best winning streak to eight games when they visit the Chicago Bulls on Thursday. Denver has won 14 of 17 games and is now among the top five teams in the Western Conference standings, thanks to strong play during a home-heavy stretch. The Nuggets wrap up a six-game homestand against Chicago, which has won six of nine games. The Bulls hope to have center Joakim Noah (foot) back after a three-game absence.
Chicago is a solid 14-8 on the road despite losing at Indiana on Monday. The Bulls are 2-2 during a stretch in which eight of nine games are on the road. Chicago will be without guard Kirk Hinrich (elbow) for the fourth straight game. Denver rallied to beat the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday and scored 29 points off 17 turnovers. “When we create any type of offense with our defense, we score,” coach George Karl told reporters. “Everybody wants to make a great offensive play, but I think it’s actually more thrilling and exciting to a team to make a great defensive play.”
TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT, WGN (Chicago), Altitude (Denver)
ABOUT THE BULLS (29-19, 20-28 ATS): Guard Marco Belinelli is a game-time decision after turning an ankle during Monday’s game against the Pacers. Belinelli suffered the injury in the first half and then returned to score 17 in the second half en route to a season-high 24 points. With point guards Derrick Rose (knee) and Hinrich sidelined, veteran Nate Robinson has played 40-plus minutes in three consecutive games while being highly productive. Robinson is averaging 18.7 points over the last seven games. Forward Carlos Boozer (hamstring) had 10 points against Indiana after missing the previous three contests.
ABOUT THE NUGGETS (31-18, 29-20 ATS): Denver has topped 100 points in eight consecutive contests and will find it challenging to keep the streak going against the Bulls, who rate third in the NBA by allowing just 91 points per game. Controlling the pace will be crucial for the Nuggets. “We’ve got to move the ball and we’ve got to run,” said swingman Corey Brewer, who tallied 20 points against Milwaukee. “It’s all about running, especially when you play a team like the Bulls, who play really good five-on-defense. You want to get the pace going.” Forward Kenneth Faried had 13 points and 10 rebounds against Milwaukee for his 20th double-double of the campaign.
TRENDS:
* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Home team is 6-2-1 ATS in the last nine meetings.
* Over is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in Denver.
* Bulls are 5-11-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings.
* Bulls are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings in Denver.
* Underdog is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. Denver has won five straight games against Chicago at the Pepsi Center and 11 of the past 12.
2. Bulls C Taj Gibson is averaging 14.8 points and 12 rebounds while starting the last four games.
3. The Nuggets are 19-3 when allowing fewer than 100 points.
