The Confederations Cup is not extremely popular, but it’s a nice primer for next year’s World Cup. The Confederations Cup is a quadrennial warmup tournament hosted by the upcoming World Cup host, which is currently Russia. Teams qualify by winning their Confederation tournament and this year’s field consists of:
Russia (UEFA) 2018 FIFA World Cup hosts
Germany (UEFA) 2014 FIFA World Cup winner
Australia (AFC2) 2015 AFC Asian Cup winner
Chile (CONMEBOL) 2015 Copa América winner
Mexico (CONCACAF) 2015 CONCACAF Cup winner
New Zealand (OFC) 2016 OFC Nations Cup winner
Portugal (UEFA) 2016 Euro winner
Cameroon (CAF2017) Africa Cup of Nations winner
The eight teams are put into two groups, with the top 2 teams advancing from each. Here are the groups and odds to win the group:
Group A: Portugal (-115), Mexico (+270), Russia (+275), New Zealand (+10000)
Group B: Germany (-105), Chile (+135), Cameroon (+650), Australia (+1800)
Portugal are now the favorites to win the tournament despite their odds not fluctuating much over the last couple of weeks. Chile and Mexico have both seen their odds improve slightly over the last couple weeks. Germany, on the other hand, have moved from +205 to +260.
Russia will be tough simply because they’re playing at home, but I envision Mexico and Portugal advancing from Group A. I’m going with the chalk in Group B as well with Germany and Chile advancing– both teams are strong and will take this competition seriously. My picks to win this tournament were put in a couple weeks ago, and they were Chile (+320) and Mexico (+1100), but make sure to shop around for the best line because odds will differ across the market.
